Full textWith the rapidly growing of the customers' data traffic demand, improving the system capacity and increasing the user throughput have become essential concerns for the future 5G wireless communication network. In this context, D2D communication and FD are proposed as potential solutions to increase the spatial spectrum utilization and the user rate in a cellular network. D2D allows two nearby devices to communicate without BS participation or with limited participation. On the other hand, FD communication enables simultaneous transmission and reception in the same frequency band. Due to the short distance property of D2D links, exploiting the FD technology in D2D communication is an excellent choice to further improve the cellular spectrum efficiency and the users’ throughput. However, practical FD transceivers add new challenges for D2D communication. For instance, the existing FD devices cannot perfectly eliminate the SI imposed on the receiver by the node’s own transmitter. Thus, the RSI which is tightly related to the transmitter power value highly affects the performance of FD transmission. Moreover, the FD technique creates additional interference in the network which may degrade its performance when compared with the half-duplex transmission. Thus, proper radio resource management is needed to exploit the benefits of FD and guarantee the QoS of the users. The works in this dissertation focus on the PA and CA of a FD-D2D network. In particular, this thesis first addresses the PA problem and proposes a simple yet efficient centralized optimal PA framework, and next, it derives the optimal joint PA and CA scheme for an FD-D2D network. A simple sub-optimal algorithm for resource allocation named CATPA, based on CA followed by PA, is also derived and proposed. This dissertation also develops, in the end, an efficient decentralized PA using game theory tools that will be an essential part of future works in the context of distributed radio resource management

Full textIn a world of intensive and widespread numeric datafow, the use of error correcting codes has become an essential aspect of telecommunication systems, by allowing to compensate the unavoidable alteration of the messages during the transmission, by means of additionnal redundancy to the initial message. Last family of codes to be discovered, in 2008, polar codes have soon experienced a large interest of the community, due to their ability to achieve the Shannon capacity, namely the theoretical limit of the information rate, defned by Shannon in 1948. Very recently, these codes have been adopted in the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications 5G. This thesis concentrates on the analysis of this family of codes regarding constraints of practical systems, including in 5G, through the two major isues of the construction of the code and the decoding in finite length. After reviewing the definition and the caracterisation of polar codes, and addressing the question of the spectrum distance, this thesis considers the issue of the flexibility of the codes as function of the codelength, using either puncturing or shortening techniques, andd escribes a new method to select the pattern so as to minimize the error rate under succssive cancellation decoding (SC). Secondly, a new bit-fipping decoding algorithm is proposed, improving signifcantly the performance compared to state-of-the-art approach, while offering a reduced average complexity, which stays close to the one of the SC decoder. Thirdly, the issue of the use of polar codes with high order modulation is considered. On the one hand, the case of coded modulations, where a high order modulation is combined with binary codes, is considered throughthe bit-interleaved coded modulation and the multilevel coded modulation, and it is shown that the second one is very well suitable for polar codes. On the other hand, the case of non-binary codes, which can be mapped directly to the constellation, are considered and it is revealed they are able to surpass their binary counterpart at the cost of additionnal decoding complexity

Full textIn this thesis, we investigate different facets of localization and communication services motivated by the symbiosis between them in the millimeter wave (mm-Wave) context for the fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications. Our aim is twofold: first, show that this duality is mutually beneficial to both services, and second, aim towards a co-existence to capture these benefits in order to bring forth mm-Wave as a strong contender for 5G. First, we look into how beamforming, an integral part of mm-Wave communications, can aid in improving the localization performance. After characterizing the localization performance in terms of Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB), we show that with optimized beamforming, the estimation of localization variables (delay, angle of departure (AoD) and angle of arrival (AoA)) improves. Then we consider the problem of co-existence of the two services together in the same system while sharing time and frequency resources. We study the non-trivial trade-off between the performances of the two services during this resource budgeting. Then, relying on this trade-off, we design an optimal resource allocation scheme while also optimizing the beamwidth in order to ascertain high performance in terms of both localization and communication. In the same context, we also look into different applications of this improved location information namely initial access, channel estimation and simultaneous localization and communication (SLAM). We show that the related performances improve in terms of quality, latency and/or complexity in comparison to the conventional methods

Full textSmall-cell base stations (picocells and femtocells) handling high bandwidths (> 100 MHz) will play a vital role in realizing the 1000X network capacity objective of the future 5G wireless networks. Power Amplifier (PA) consumes the majority of the base station power, whose linearity comes at the cost of efficiency. With the increase in bandwidths, PA also suffers from increased memory effects. Digital predistortion (DPD) and analog RF predistortion (ARFPD) tries to solve the linearity/efficiency trade-off. In the context of 5G small-cell base stations, the use of conventional predistorters becomes prohibitively power-hungry.Memory polynomial (MP) model is one of the most attractive predistortion models, providing significant performance with very few coefficients. We propose a novel FIR memory polynomial (FIR-MP) model which significantly augments the performance of the conventional memory polynomial predistorter. Simulations with models extracted on ADL5606 which is a 1 W GaAs HBT PA show improvements in adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) of 7.2 dB and 15.6 dB, respectively, for 20 MHz and 80 MHz signals, in comparison with MP predistorter. Digital implementation of the proposed FIR-MP model has been carried out in 28 nm FDSOI CMOS technology. With a fraction of the power and die area of that of the MP a huge improvement in ACLR is attained. An overall estimated power consumption of 9.18 mW and 116.2 mW, respectively, for 20 MHz and 80 MHz signals is obtained.Based on the proposed FIR-MP model a novel low-power mixed-signal approach to linearize RF power amplifiers (PAs) is presented. The digital FIR filter improves the memory correction performance without any bandwidth expansion and the MP predistorter in analog baseband provides superior linearization. MSPD avoids 5X bandwidth requirement for the DAC and reconstruction filters of the transmitter and the power-hungry RF components when compared to DPD and ARFPD, respectively. The impact of various non-idealities is simulated with ADL5606 (1 W GaAs HBT PA) MP PA model using 80 MHz modulated signal to derive the requirements for the integrated circuit implementation. A resolution of 8 bits for the coefficients and a signal path SNR of 60 dB is required to achieve ACLR1 above 45 dBc, with as little as 9 coefficients in the analog domain. Discussion on the potential circuit architectures of subsystems is provided. It results that an analog implementation is feasible. It will be worth in the future to continue the design of this architecture up to a silicon prototype to evaluate its performance and power consumption

Full textThe rapid growth in wireless data traffic and bandwidth intensive services (voice over IP, video streaming, livestreaming, etc.) necessitates finding viable solutions to improve service quality and maximize thenetwork performance. To accommodate these bandwidth intensive applications, heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) were introduced in 3GPP as one of the main features to meet these advanced requirements. Yet, because of the difference in uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) traffic loads expected in the next HetNetsgeneration, it becomes essential to dynamically adjust UL/DL resources. To support this newapproach, dynamic time-division duplexing (TDD) has been proposed. Nevertheless, the importance of UL arises along with the evolution of social networking and cloudsolutions. Therefore, it is of great interest to introduce novel techniques that mitigate ULinterferences, improve UL and DL throughputs and allow as well, a better use of radio resources byproviding adequate load balancing among UL and DL. Such an additional feature is the decoupledUL/DL access. In our work, we first develop a TDD model in HetNets. Under this model, we derive analytical expressions for the distribution of the interferer location considering all possible interference scenarios that could occur in TDD-based networks, while taking into account the harmful impact of interference.Based on the latter result, we derive the distribution and moment generating function (MGF) of the uplink and downlinkinter-cell interference considering a network consisting of one macro cell and one small cell. We build on the derivedexpressions to analyze the average capacity of the reference cell in both uplink and downlink transmissions.Second, we develop a joint TDD/decoupling statistical model to highlight the benefits thatthe decoupling access mode can bring to a HetNet TDD based system, in terms of UL and DL spectral efficiencies and throughputs. Introducing the decoupling mode necessitates a thoroughcomparison study with the conventional coupled UL/DL access mode. Therefore, we derive the statistics of the interference signal and the signal of interest of both modes and then analyze their impact on the system performance. This work was extended to include multiple small cells deployment, where more insight into the benefits of decoupling mode is provided in terms of UL and DL decoupling gains. Further to the implementation of the developed model, it is shown that the decoupling case brings greater benefits in the uplink and maintains the same improvement in the downlink for various offset values and thus, improves the overall system performance when being combined with a dynamic TDD technology. It is further shown that our modeled network can be optimized by adopting the optimal combination of both the small cell offset factor and the distance between small cells. On the other hand, evaluating the benefits of an adaptive TDD and decoupling in a HetNet based system according to time-variant traffic loads, necessitates findinga system level simulator where we can present the motivation and accurately assess the role of both decoupling and dynamic TDD techniques in the UL/DL optimization problem. From the applied simulation scenarios, it is observed that the proposed adaptive algorithm (dynamic TDD with decoupling policies) yields significant performance improvements in UL and DL throughput compared to a number of conventional schemes, mainly in dense HetNet deployment and in highly loaded systems

Full textThis thesis studies D2D communication in realistic and challenging scenarios for future wireless systems. In particular, the thesis focuses on how may D2D communication help other technologies to enhance their performance. The first wireless scenario is the one of multicasting, used for example in video streaming or common alert message transmission for police, firefighters or ambulances. The second wireless scenario is the critical one of URLLC expected to be used to avoid cars crashes in the upcoming V2X context, and also when connecting machines together in environments like connected hospitals, airports, factories (industry 4.0), and last but not least in e-health context in order to enhance medical tele-surgery. The last wireless scenario is the one of UE group localization in the context of massive IoT, where devices are interacting with each other and are mostly confined in local groups, needing local services. In the multicast channel scenario, where a transmitter wishes to convey a common message to many receivers, it is known that the multicast rate decrease as the number of UEs increases. This vanishing behavior changes drastically when enabling the receivers to cooperate with each other via D2D. Indeed, the multicast rate increases with high probability when the number of receivers increases. This chapter also analyzes the outage rate of the proposed scheme in the same setting. Extensions regarding firstly resource utilization and secondly considering the use of HARQ are also analyzed. Next chapter addresses one of the major challenges for future networks, named URLLC. Specifically, the chapter studies the problem of HARQ with delayed feedback, where the transmitter is informed after some delay on whether or not his transmission was successful. The goal is to minimize the expected number of retransmissions subject to a reliability constraint within a delay budget. This problem is studied at two levels: (i) a single transmitter faced with a stochastic i.i.d. noisy environment and (ii) a group of transmitters whom shares a collision channel. Then the chapter that follows provides a cooperative UE mapping method that is highly accurate. Four different channel models are studied in this chapter: LOS and NLOS for indoor and outdoor environments. The results show significant improvement compared to already existing methods. Identifying the dense local areas in real time and informing the network allows the Base Station (BS) to increase the capacity through highly directive beams, and therefore, avoids the deployment cost of new infrastructure

Full textFuture wireless networks are envisioned to accommodate the heterogeneous needs of entirely different systems. New services obeying various constraints will coexist with legacy cellular users in the same frequency band. This coexistence is hardly achievable with OFDM, the physical layer used by current systems, because of its poor spectral containment. Thus, a myriad of multi-carrier waveforms with enhanced spectral localization have been proposed for future wireless devices. In this thesis, we investigate the coexistence of new systems based on these waveforms with legacy OFDM users. We provide the first theoretical and experimental analysis of the inter-system interference that arises in those scenarii. Then, we apply this analysis to evaluate the merits of different enhanced waveforms and we finally investigate the performance achievable by a network composed of legacy OFDM cellular users and D2D pairs using one of the studied enhanced waveforms

Full textOver the past few decades, the continuing growth of network statistics requires a constantly evolving technology. Therefore, a natural question arises in our minds: what will 5G be? To answer this question, the 5G architecture must be designed with a certain level of flexibility through the integration of softwarization and virtualization principles. Therefore, we can see that 5G will provide a paradigm shift beyond radio access technology in order to establish an agile and sophisticated communication system. The network can be used efficiently and independently by creating multiple logically separated spaces, called network slices. In addition, each logical network can deploy its network functions in a flexible cloud environment. To this end, the goal of this thesis is to study these two techniques: (a) Cloud-RAN and (b) RAN splitting. In the first part, our focus is on the C-RAN concept, in which monolithic base stations are replaced by (1) distributed radio elements and (2) centralized pools for baseband processing units. The C-RAN notion is still confronted with stringent capacity and latency requirements of the fronthaul interface that connects the distributed remote radio unit to the centralized baseband processing unit. In the second part, we focus on RAN cutting not only to allow different levels of isolation and sharing at each slice of network, but also to customize the control plane, user plane and control logic. Therefore, we provide a flexible runtime environment for the "RAN Runtime" slicing system to host service instances on each of the underlying RAN modules

The 5th generation (5G) of mobile networks is just around the corner. It is expected to bring extraordinary benefits to the population and to solve the majority of the problems of current 4th generation (4G) systems. The success of 5G, whose first phase of standardization has concluded, relies in three pillars that correspond to its main use cases: massive machine-type communication (mMTC), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). This thesis mainly focuses on the first pillar of 5G: mMTC, but also provides a solution for the eMBB in massive content delivery scenarios. Specifically, its main contributions are in the areas of: 1) efficient support of mMTC in cellular networks; 2) random access (RA) event-reporting in wireless sensor networks (WSNs); and 3) cooperative massive content delivery in cellular networks. Regarding mMTC in cellular networks, this thesis provides a thorough performance analysis of the RA procedure (RAP), used by the mobile devices to switch from idle to connected mode. These analyses were first conducted by simulation and then by an analytical model; both of these were developed with this specific purpose and include one of the most promising access control schemes: the access class barring (ACB). To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the most accurate analytical models reported in the literature and the only one that incorporates the ACB scheme. Our results clearly show that the highly-synchronized accesses that occur in mMTC applications can lead to severe congestion. On the other hand, it is also clear that congestion can be prevented with an adequate configuration of the ACB scheme. However, the configuration parameters of the ACB scheme must be continuously adapted to the intensity of access attempts if an optimal performance is to be obtained. We developed a practical solution to this problem in the form of a scheme to automatically configure the ACB; we call it access class barring configuration (ACBC) scheme. The results show that our ACBC scheme leads to a near-optimal performance regardless of the intensity of access attempts. Furthermore, it can be directly implemented in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) cellular systems to efficiently handle mMTC because it has been designed to comply with the 3GPP standards. In addition to the analyses described above for cellular networks, a general analysis for smart metering applications is performed. That is, we study an mMTC scenario from the perspective of event detection and reporting WSNs. Specifically, we provide a hybrid model for the performance analysis and optimization of cluster-based RA WSN protocols. Results showcase the utility of overhearing to minimize the number of packet transmissions, but also of the adaptation of transmission parameters after a collision occurs. Building on this, we are able to provide some guidelines that can drastically increase the performance of a wide range of RA protocols and systems in event reporting applications. Regarding eMBB, we focus on a massive content delivery scenario in which the exact same content is transmitted to a large number of mobile users simultaneously. Such a scenario may arise, for example, with video streaming services that offer a particularly popular content. This is a problematic scenario because cellular base stations have no efficient multicast or broadcast mechanisms. Hence, the traditional solution is to replicate the content for each requesting user, which is highly inefficient. To solve this problem, we propose the use of network coding (NC) schemes in combination with cooperative architectures named mobile clouds (MCs). Specifically, we develop a protocol for efficient massive content delivery, along with the analytical model for its optimization. Results show the proposed model is simple and accurate, and the protocol can lead to energy savings of up to 37 percent when compared to the traditional approach.

Full textHARQ has become an important research field in the wireless digital communications area during the last years. In this thesis, we improve the HARQ mechanisms in terms of throughput and/or latency which are the bottleneck of next generation wireless communication systems. More precisely, we improve the time-slotted HARQ systems by mimicking NOMA, which means using superposed packets in a single-user context. In the first part of the thesis, we propose HARQ protocols using the help of a relay to improve the transmission rate and reliability. An enhanced HARQ protocol adapted to delayed feedback is proposed in the second part. In this new multi-layer HARQ protocol, additional redundant packets are sent preemptively before receiving the acknowledgement, and in superposition to other HARQ processes

Full textThe fifth generation of mobile cellular networks, 5G, is designed to support a set of new use cases and requirements, e.g. concerning quality of service or security. Using the virtualization technologies and the concept of network slicing, the 5G network operators will be able to provide specific connectivity capabilities in order to support these various use cases. Each network slice can be dedicated to a 3rd party (i.e., any business actor that is not the network operator), and be designed to fit its requirements. However, although network slices can be designed by enabling or disabling certain network functions, the Authentication and Access Control (AAC) mechanisms remain the same for all slices, with tightly coupled network components. This thesis proposes 5G-SSAAC (5G Slice-Specific AAC), as an initial step to introduce a more loosely coupled design into the whole 5G network architecture. 5G-SSAAC enables 5G networks to provide various AAC mechanisms to the 3rd parties according to their security requirements. To assess this innovative mechanism, the thesis analyses the consequences of using the 5G-SSAAC on the security of the whole 5G system. The feasibility of the 5G-SSAAC is also presented with the implementation of a fully virtualized mobile network through an OAI (Open Air Interface) based testbed. This work finally evaluates the impact of 5G-SSAAC mechanism on the network load considering the anticipated number of AAC signalling messages compared to the existing AAC mechanisms in cellular networks

Full textESUME DE LA THESE EN ANGLAIS With the increase of the global data tmffic, the multiplication of co1mected devices and the diversification of the communication types, the fifth generation of cellular networks (5G) has to overcome a se1ies of challenges. In this context, massive MlMO systems hold a wide range of benefits by using a large number of antennas combined with appropriate signal processing techniques. Additionally, the use of the FBMC/OQAM modulation instead of the classical OFDM modulation may enhance the performance of the systems in cer1ain situations. Firstly, this thesis focuses on vehicular scenarios. In par1icular, massive MIMO systems are proposed to overcome the interference due to the Doppler effect for the uplink. We thus analytically highlight that increasing the number of receive antermas induces a drastic reduction of the impact of the Doppler effect. Moreover, the perfonnance of the OFDM and the FBMC/OQAM modulations are compared in this context for Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) and Line-Of-Sight (LOS) environments. The second scenario investigated in this thesis considers communications in wide underse1ved areas. In this context, massive MIMO systems allow to create a long-range wireless back.haul link between two base stations. Thereby, the cost of deployment of the cellular networks is reduced. In this thesis r a new massive MLMO precoding technique is proposed in order to use the same fequency band for the backhaul link and the access links. Moreover, the impact of a desynchronization between the back haul link and the access links is studied and the use of the FBMC/OQAM modulation for the backhaul link is discussed

Full textThe evolution of numerical technologies allowed the daily use of connected object for a large part of the world’s population. To fulfill the ever-growing demand for wireless communication, new technologies have to be developed in order to obtain higher data-rate with smaller and cheaper devices. The antenna plays a major role in communication systems and their performances are to be improved to obtain more efficient telecommunications. Indeed the rise of data-rate involves an improvement of the antenna gain and bandwidth, but the integration of directive antennas is always challenging. The actual trend is the shift to higher frequency bands, in the millimeter-wave range, this allows a size reduction together with the use of broader bandwidth; however the fabrication becomes a real challenge. The research work realized in this thesis concern the design, fabrication and experimental characterization of antennas for backhaul links: the E-band (71-86GHz) communication between two fixed antennas used in cellular network; nonetheless the solutions developed can easily be applied to other applications such as radar or satellite communications. The studied systems combine a one-dimensional array of long radiating slots (CTS) fed in parallel with a quasi-optical beam forming network (pillbox system). The radiating slots are made of truncated parallel plate waveguides (PPW) and are fed in parallel by a power-divider network realized in PPW technology. The pillbox system consists of two stacked PPWs connected by a multi-slot coupler and an integrated parabolic reflector, the latter converts the cylindrical wave emitted by a focal feed into a planar wave. The omnipresence of PPWs throughout the antenna system insures a broad band of operation, and the architecture shows a lower profile than quasi-optical antennas. This antenna presents an unequaled tradeoff between a high gain, a wide bandwidth and a low-profile. Unfortunately they also have drawbacks. From a technological point of view, their fabrication is complicated and expensive. This is why in this thesis a particular attention is given to the use of new techniques allowing the fabrication of prototypes leading to experimental validation of the results. From the radiation performance point of view, CTS/pillbox antennas do not show any reconfigurability solution in the E-plane and the overlap level obtained in H-plane with already existing antennas is too low to be usable. In this thesis, innovative solutions are investigated to find solution to this lake of versatility. Finally the sidelobe level (SLL) in E-plane of the totality of parallel-fed CTS antennas described in the open-literature is about -13.5dB. A new architecture introduced in this thesis allows a reduction of this SLL down to a negligible level

Full textThe evolution of wireless communication must meet the increasingly high demand in mobile data. It is expected to increase the maximum rates of wireless by a factor of 1000 by 2020. Meanwhile, it is clear that to reach this goal, a combination of different ingredients is necessary. The major limitation of wireless systems is the interference due to frequency reuse. This has been a long-standing impairment in cellular networks of all generations that will be further exacerbated in 5G networks, due to the expected dense cell deployment. The use of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in 4G leaded to an interference management by dynamic coordination of resource blocks. However, this allowed only modest gains in rates. A new technique of interference management was born 5 years ago, the interference alignment (IA). the IA permits to have a capacity with equals the half of the capacity of an interference-free system. This technique supposes that each transmitter (TX) knows the channels not only towards its receivers (RX)s, but the channels from all TXs to all receivers RXs. A more recent interference technique that boosts IA is massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO), where TXs use antennas at a very large scale. The idea is motivated by many simplifications, which appear in an asymptotic regime where base stations are endowed with large numbers of antennas. This thesis treats the problem of interference cancellation and capacity maximization in massive MIMO. In this context, the thesis proposes new interference management alternatives for the massive MIMO antenna regime, taking into account also the practical challenges of massive antenna arrays

Full textThe energy demand in mobile networks is increasing due to the emergence of new technologies and new services with higher requirements (data rates, delays, etc). In this context, the Mobile Network Operator (MNO) has to provide more radio and processing resources in its network leading for higher financial costs. The MNO has no choice but to implement energy saving strategies in all the parts of its infrastructure and especially at the Radio Access Network (RAN).At the same time, the electrical grid is getting smarter including new functionalities to balance supply and demand by varying the electricity prices, allowing some aggregators to be part of the supply process and signing demand response agreements with its clients. In the context of reliable smart grid, the MNO having thousands of evolved NodeB (eNB) spread over all the country, has to play major role in the grid by acting as a prosumer able to sell electricity. In African Sub-Saharan countries however, the grid may be not reliable or even non existent, the MNO has no choice but to deploy a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and rely partially or totally on it.In this thesis, we study the interactions between the network operator and the grid either reliable or not in both developed and developing countries. We investigate both long term and short term optimal energy related management, with the aim of minimising the operator's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for energy per base station which is the sum of its Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operational Expenditure (OPEX) while satisfying the growing needs of its user traffic in the cell. The long term study enables us to make semestral based investment decisions for the battery and renewable energy sources dimensioning considering equipment performance degradation, predictions on users traffic growth and electricity market evolution over a long period of time counted in years. In the case of being powered by a reliable smart grid, the short term policy helps the operator to set on a daily basis, an optimal battery management strategy by performing electricity arbitrage or trading that takes advantage of the electricity prices hourly fluctuations in order to minimize the MNO daily energy bill while respecting some rules on the usage of its equipments. In the case of a non reliable or off-grid environment, the operator is powered by hybrid sources coupling storage, diesel generators, solar power and the grid if the latter is operational. Here, we define a fixed order of priority on the use of these sources that extends the battery lifetime and maintain its performance

Full text5G Radio Access Network (RAN) aims to evolve new technologies spanning the Cloud infrastructure, virtualization techniques and Software Defined Network capabilities. Advanced solutions are introduced to split the RAN functions between centralized and distributed locations to improve the RAN flexibility. However, one of the major concerns is to efficiently allocate RAN resources, while supporting heterogeneous 5G service requirements. In this thesis, we address the problematic of the user-centric RAN slice provisioning, within a Cloud RAN infrastructure enabling flexible functional splits. Our research aims to jointly meet the end users’ requirements, while minimizing the deployment cost. The problem is NP-hard. To overcome the great complexity involved, we propose a number of heuristic provisioning strategies and we tackle the problem on four stages. First, we propose a new implementation of a cost efficient C-RAN architecture, enabling on-demand deployment of RAN resources, denoted by AgilRAN. Second, we consider the network function placement sub-problem and propound a new scalable user-centric functional split selection strategy named SPLIT-HPSO. Third, we integrate the radio resource allocation scheme in the functional split selection optimization approach. To do so, we propose a new heuristic based on Swarm Particle Optimization and Dijkstra approaches, so called E2E-USA. In the fourth stage, we consider a deep learning based approach for user-centric RAN Slice Allocation scheme, so called DL-USA, to operate in real-time. The results obtained prove the efficiency of our proposed strategies

Full textA large part of the results reported in this thesis is based on an observation which has never been made for wireless communications and power control in particular: transmit power levels and more generally transmit covariance matrices can be exploited to embed information such as coordination information and available interference-dependent feedback samples can be exploited as a communication channel. First, we show that the famous iterative water-filling algorithm does not exploit the available information sufficiently well in terms of sum-utility. Indeed, we show that global channel state information can be acquired from the sole knowledge of an SINR-type feedback. A natural question then arises. Is it possible to design a distributed power control algorithm which exploits as well as possible the available information? To answer this question, we derive the characterization of the utility region for the considered problem and show how to exploit this characterization not only to measure globally efficiency but also to obtain globally efficient one-shot power control functions. Motivated by the success of our approach for single-band and multi-band interference networks, we asked ourselves whether it could be exploited for MIMO networks. We have identified at least one very relevant scenario. Indeed, we show that opportunistic interference alignment can be implemented by only assuming interference-plus-noise covariance feedback at the secondary transmitter. Then, in the last chapter, we generalize the problem of quantization, the motivation for this being given by some observations made in the previous chapters. First, we assume that the quantizer and de-quantizer are designed to maximize a general utility function instead of the conventional distortion function. Second, we assume that the quantizer and de-quantizer may have different utility functions. This raises non-trivial technical problems, our claim is to make a very first step into solving them

Full textCloud Radio Access Network (RAN) was identified as a key enabler for 5G. Its deployment is however meeting multiple challenges notably in the fronthaul integration, the latter being the segment located between the Digital Unit and the Radio Unit generally based on CPRI. Giving its bit-rate, latency and jitter constrains, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is the most adequate solution for its transport. However, the radio technologies recommended for 5G will drastically increase the CPRI bit-rate making its transport very challenging with low-cost WDM. This thesis deals with four main topics : The introduction of a control channel in the CPRI enables offering the WDM infrastructure monitoring and the wavelength tunability in the transceivers. The study of this control channel integration in the fronthaul link is reported in the second chapter as well as an investigation on the wireless transmission of CPRI. The use of Analog Radio over Fiber (A-RoF) can significantly improve the fronthaul spectral efficiency compared to CPRI-based fronthaul enabling, potentially, the transport of 5G interfaces. A thorough investigation on the actual gain brought by this solution is stated in the third chapter. CPRI compression based on uniform and non-uniform quantization is also a solution to enhance the CPRI spectral efficiency. The fourth chapter describes this solution and experimentally shows the achievable compression rates. Finally, establishing a new functional split in the radio equipment was considered as a promising solution for 5G. Two new interfaces have been identified for high and low layer functional splits. A theoretical and experimental study of these new interfaces is reported in the fifth chapter

Full textConsumer mobile communications, video downloads and the use of mobile applications represent most of today's use of radio resources in 4G networks; but in order to broaden the spectrum of uses and the diversity of users, many research efforts and numerous proposals are beginning to emerge for the implementation of a new standard called 5G, which targets a wide range of sectors and is important pillars of a society: energy, health, media, industry or transportation. To fulfil these challenges, this new standard will have to combine several technologies, including the creation of an Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) to obtain a dense coverage, more robust to obstacles and increase the capacity of the network. This promising solution is obtained by the deployment of dense small cells in hotspots where huge traffic is generated, and by using millimeter waves to extend the transmission bandwidth. These smalls cells must optimize the received signal according to the location of the user, by using a high gain beam reconfigurable antennas array. This method avoids using all the available power to issue "blind" hoping to fall on the terminal. The Objectives of this thesis is therefore to design a small antennas array or "Small Cells" working in mmWave bands with an ability to change the direction of the beam according to the needs of users. A dual polarized beam reconfigurable technique applied on a planar antenna array has been developed. This manuscript is divided as follows: after a reminder of the objectives of the 5G and its requirements in chapter 1, we have introduced in chapter 2, the architectures and theory of the different antenna arrays, as well as the different techniques of beam steer. The third chapter is dedicated to the design of a cross patch antenna with a dual polarization and reconfigurable beam by using switchable parasitic elements. This radiating element was then used in Chapter 4 to design a high-gain reconfigurable, multiport sub-arrays and antenna arrays

Full textThe increasing number of wireless network users and the diversification of their usage call for an evolution of the resource management methods. This thesis is based on 5G resource allocation techniques. In regular wireless networks, cells are managed independently. In this context, we propose a resource allocation algorithm with the aim of fairly guaranteeing the best service to users. When the cell charge is low enough to guarantee a sufficient quality of service, the algorithm redirects dynamically its priorities towards energy saving. This behavior allows to obtain an efficient compromise between capacity and energy consumption at different charge levels. In order to extend network capacity, the adding of new cells allows to broaden the available bandwidth and to reduce the distance induced signal attenuation. We present an algorithm of user repartition in a multi-cell context, which intervenes before the resource allocation stage. A user can be covered by several cells using different frequencies, thus its repartition will have strong repercussions on the cell charge balance and on the general quality of service in the system. The maximal number of cells in a sector is limited by its geographical environment. The Massive-MIMO allows to increase the cell functionalities while allowing a better energy directivity, and thus adding the spatial component to the resource allocation. We propose a new indicator evaluating the spatial compatibility of users based on past allocations. Once integrated in an allocation algorithm, it takes advantage of the superior capacities of Massive-MIMO

Full textThe 5th Generation Cellular Network Technology (5G) will be the network supporting the Internet of Things (IoT) and it introduced a major feature, Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. D2D allows energy-constrained wireless devices to save energy by interacting in proximity at a lower transmission power. Cooperation and device-assisted networking therefore raise signicant interest with respect to energy saving, and can be used in conjunction with energy harvesting to prolong the lifetime of battery-powered devices. However, cooperation schemes increase networking between devices, increasing the need for security mechanisms to be executed to assure data protection and trust relations between network nodes. This leads to the use of cryptographic primitives and security mechanisms with a much higher frequency.Security mechanisms are fundamental for protection against malicious actions but they also represent an important source of energy consumption, often neglected due to the importance of data protection. Authentication procedures for secure channel establishment can be computationally and energetically expensive, especially if the devices are resource constrained. Security features such as condentiality and data authentication have a low energetic cost but are used constantly in a device engaged in data exchanges. It is therefore necessary to properly quantify the energy consumption due to security in a device. A security based energy model is proposed to achieve this goal.In User Equipment (UE) D2D networks, mobility is a key characteristic. It can be explored for connecting directly in proximity with IoT objects. A lightweight authentication solution is presented that allows direct UE-IoT communications, extending coverage and potentially saving signicant energy amounts. This approach can be particularly useful in Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) scenarios where the network infrastructure may not be available.Security features such as condentiality or data authentication are a significant source of consumption. Devices equipped with Energy Harvesting (EH) hardware can have a surplus or a deficit of energy. The applied security can therefore be adjusted to the available energy of a device, introducing an energy aware secure channel. After in depth analysis of 5G standards, it was found that D2D UE networks using this type of channel would spend a signicant amount of energy and be generally less secure. A lightweight rekeying mechanism is therefore proposed to reduce the security overhead of adapting security to energy. To complete the proposed rekeying mechanism, a security parameter bootstrapping method is also presented. The method denes the Core Network (CN) as the security policy maker, makes the overall network more secure and helps preventing communication outages.Adapting security features to energy levels raises the need for the study of the energy/security tradeoff. To this goal, an Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling a communication channel is presented where an agent chooses the security features to apply to transmitted packets. This stochastic control optimization problem is solved via several dynamic programming and Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms. Results show that adapting security features to the available energy can signicantly prolong battery lifetime, improve data reliability while still providing security features. A comparative study is also presented for the different RL learning algorithms. Then a Deep Q-Learning (DQL) approach is presented and tested to improve the learning speed of the agent. Results confirm the faster learning speed. The approach is then tested under difficult EH hardware stability. Results show robust learning properties and excellent security decision making from the agent with a direct impact on data reliability. Finally, a memory footprint comparison is made to demonstrate the feasibility of the presented system even on resource constrained devices

Full textCloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) has been proposed as a promising architecture to meet the exponential growth in data traffic demands and to overcome the challenges of next generation mobile networks (5G). The main concept of C-RAN is to decouple the BaseBand Units (BBU) and the Remote Radio Heads (RRH), and place the BBUs in common edge data centers (BBU pools) for centralized processing. This gives a number of benefits in terms of cost savings, network capacity improvement and resource utilization gains. However, network operators need to investigate scalable and cost-efficient algorithms for resource allocation problems to enable and facilitate the deployment of C-RAN architecture. Most of these problems are very complex and thus very hard to solve. Hence, we use combinatorial optimization which provides powerful tools to efficiently address these problems. One of the key issues in the deployment of C-RAN is finding the optimal assignment of RRHs (or antennas) to edge data centers (BBUs) when jointly optimizing the fronthaul latency and resource consumption. We model this problem by a mathematical formulation based on an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) approach to provide the optimal strategies for the RRH-BBU assignment problem and we propose also low-complexity heuristic algorithms to rapidly reach good solutions for large problem instances. The optimal RRH-BBU assignment reduces the expected latency and offers resource utilization gains. Such gains can only be achieved when reducing the inter-cell interference caused by the dense deployment of cell sites. We propose an exact mathematical formulation based on Branch-and-Cut methods that enables to consolidate and re-optimize the antennas radii in order to jointly minimize inter-cell interference and guarantee a full network coverage in C-RAN. In addition to the increase of inter-cell interference, the high density of cells in C-RAN increases the amount of baseband processing as well as the amount of data traffic demands between antennas and centralized data centers when strong latency requirements on fronthaul network should be met. Therefore, we discuss in the third part of this thesis how to determine the optimal placement of BBU functions when considering 3GPP split option to find optimal tradeoffs between benefits of centralization in C-RAN and transport requirements. We propose exact and heuristic algorithms based on combinatorial optimization techniques to rapidly provide optimal or near-optimal solutions even for large network sizes

Full textThe improvement of the capabilities of wireless communication devices (smartphone, tablets …) which require higher and higher data rate, leads to a significant increase of the data traffic needed by each end user. This strong consumer demand for higher data-rate and coverage is stressing a lot the capacity of existing cellular networks. In order to cope with this challenge, one of the most promising solution consists in a network densification based on the deployment of low-power and short-range-radio-coverage base stations (small cells). The development of high data-rate and low power wireless fronthaul and backhaul technologies is a key requirement to enable the deployment of those future small cells (since associated civil works costs generally prevent the use of optical fiber solutions). So far, the wireless industry has been investigating the use of 60 and 80 GHz frequency bands in order to develop low-cost higher than 1Gbit/s backhaul solutions. It is expected that higher data-rate > 10 Gbit/s will be required for fronthaul communications. The broad bandwidth available around 120GHz (116-142GHz) would enable to reach such data rates while lowering the DC power consumption. In this thesis, we develop several lens and reflector antennas operating at 60, 80 and 120GHz for WLAN/WPAN and fronthaul/backhaul networks. In order to minimize the cost of those solutions, we evaluate 3D-printing technologies for the fabrication of the lenses and the reflectors as well as industrial low loss organic packaging technologies for the fabrication of planar antenna-source

Full text5G is envisioned to tackle, in addition to a considerable increase in traffic volume, the task of connecting billions of devices with heterogeneous service requirements. In order to address the challenges of 5G, we advocate a more efficient use of the available information, with more service and user awareness, and an expansion of the RAN intelligence. In particular, we focus on two key enablers of 5G, namely massive MIMO and proactive caching. In the third chapter, we focus on addressing the bottleneck of CSI acquisition in TDD Massive MIMO. In order to do so, we propose novel spatial grouping schemes such that, in each group, maximum coverage of the signal’s spatial basis with minimum overlapping between user spatial signatures is achieved. The latter enables to increase connection density while improving spectral efficiency. TDD Massive MIMO is also the focus of the fourth chapter. Therein, based on the different rates of wireless channels aging, CSI estimation periodicity is exploited as an additional DoF. We do so by proposing a dynamic adaptation of the TDD frame based on the heterogeneous channels coherence times. The Massive MIMO BSs are enabled to learn the best uplink training policy for long periods. Since channel changes result primarily from device mobility, location awareness is also included in the learning process. The resulting planning problem was modeled as a two-time scale POMDP and efficient low complexity algorithms were provided to solve it. The fifth chapter focuses on proactive caching. We focus on improving the energy efficiency of cache-enabled networks by exploiting the correlation in traffic patterns in addition to the spatial repartition of requests. We propose a framework that strikes the optimal trade-off between complexity and truthfulness in user behavior modeling through adaptive content popularity-based clustering. It also simplifies the problem of content placement, which results in a rapidly adaptable and energy efficient content allocation framework
