Lindholm, Henrik. "Floating Terminal: Technical Lifetime of 60 Years." Thesis, KTH, Lättkonstruktioner, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-302786.

Full text
Abstract:
Offshore solutions for container infrastructure such as Sea Technologies' floating container terminal can bring both environmental benefits and transport efficiencies for shipping.Large investment costs and requirements for long-term operational reliability for such structures entail the need for long technical service life. Several factors affect and limit the service life of marine structures, including fatigue and corrosion. The container terminal in question is in this context, marine structures, exceptionally large. This means that conventional maintenance of marine structures is not directly applicable and thus noticeable affect complexity of maintenance of the structure. In this work, factors that affect the technical service life and approaches to remedy these factors are investigated for marine structures in general and Sea Technologies' floating container terminal in particular. The purpose of the work has been to investigate possible approaches and technical solutions to meet a technical lifespan of 60 years. This has been done according to methodology from systems engineering with information and facts from studies of technical literature, industry publications and meetings and conversations with industry experts. The work has been limited to a literature study and conversations with experts within the time frames for a master's thesis. Areas affected by the work are corrosion, fatigue and underwater fouling. Lifelimiting factors have been identified in relation to its potential service life impact and maintenance complexity. Furthermore, requirements from stakeholders have been identified in accordance with the engineering of the system. Based on this, possible methods for meeting a life expectancy of 60 years have been investigated. The methods examined can be divided into three categories. These are, design measures, construction measures and maintenance measures. The possible measures examined have been compiled into a collection of recommended measures based on its technical functionality, estimated cost and fulfilment of stakeholder requirements. In summary, the report demonstrates that corrosion and corrosion protection are the most important factor in enabling long service life for this marine structure, both in terms of structural integrity and reliability of operations. Methods for corrosion protection and corrosion control recommended in the report are generally coating systems with extraordinarily long lifespans. Furthermore, a long technical life, also places demands for efficient and functional maintenance. The work therefore also presents recommendations on procedures for efficient maintenance, including the implementation of risk-based inspections and maintenance as well as technical solutions for systematisation and automation of inspections.

Jones, Jeffrey Alun. "Electronic reliability prediction : a study over 25 years." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2008. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1991/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes research work that the author has undertaken and published in the field of electronic reliability prediction techniques over the last 25 years. Reliability prediction is an important area since it has been part of the backbone of reliability engineering in one form or another for over fifty years. The author has over 45 publications that are within the area of reliability prediction and 13 of these have been selected for review in this thesis. In order to show how the author’s work has contributed to the field of reliability prediction this document also contains information on the history of reliability prediction. This allows the author’s work to be placed in context with general developments in the field. The contributions to knowledge and innovations that have been made in reliability prediction include the development of statistical models for lifetime prediction using early life data (i.e. prognostics); the use of non-constant failure rates for reliability prediction; the use of neural networks for reliability prediction, the use of artificial intelligence systems to support reliability engineers’ decision making; the use of a holistic approach to reliability; the use of complex discrete events simulation to model equipment availability; demonstration of the weaknesses of classical reliability prediction; an understanding of the basic behaviour of no fault founds; the development of a parametric drift model; identification of the use of a reliability database to improve the reliability of systems; and an understanding of the issues that surround the use of new reliability metrics in the aerospace industry.

van, Drempt Nadege Andree. "Handwriting in healthy people aged 65 years and over." University of Sydney, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/6623.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy)
Background: Handwriting is an important activity which is commonly affected after a stroke. Handwriting research has predominantly involved children. In adults, the focus of handwriting research has been identifying forgery, doctors’ handwriting legibility and the kinematics of writing strokes. There are no known studies which provide information on unimpaired adult handwriting in real situations to guide stroke rehabilitation therapists. Aim: This study aims to describe the handwriting practices of 30 unimpaired adults aged 65 years and over to inform adult handwriting rehabilitation. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional observational design. Three data collection methods were used: self-report questionnaire, handwriting samples collected using a digital pen and a handwriting log. Following ethical approval, 30 older adults were recruited using snowball sampling. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: The median age of participants was 72 years. Three-quarters of participants scored less than 4 for legibility on a 4-point scale. A tripod pen grip was used by 97% of the sample. Variations in handwriting were evident in letter size, slant and spacing. Participants wrote very little, an average of three times per day (SD = 1.5) and a median of 18 words per occasion. Most handwriting (85%) involved self-generated, not copied or transcribed text. Participants stood whilst writing for 17% of handwriting occasions. The most common reasons for handwriting were taking notes (23%) and completing puzzles (22%). Discussion: Legibility in older adults may not depend exclusively on the handwriting script that a beginning writer was taught at school, but may be due to other factors, as a person ages. A comprehensive adult handwriting assessment and retraining program should consist of relevant handwriting activities, involve self-generated text and few words. Conclusion: Findings will contribute to the ongoing development of an ecologically valid adult handwriting assessment and help inform stroke rehabilitation practice.

Tindall, Mary. "Urinary incontinence, self esteem and social participation among women 60 years and older." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/276884.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between urinary incontinence and self-esteem and also social participation. A convenience sample of 25 women 60 years of age and older participated. Forty-eight percent of the women had urinary incontinence at the time of the study. No significant differences were found in the level of self-esteem between those women with urinary incontinence and those women without urinary incontinence. Two subjects with urinary incontinence reported refusing social participation due to urinary incontinence. However, no difference in the overall level of social participation was found when comparing those with to those without urinary incontinence. A nonsignificant correlation was found between self-esteem and the overall level of social participation. In addition, the relationship between self-esteem and the level of social participation for women with urinary incontinence was nonsignificant. Only two of the 12 subjects with urinary incontinence reported receiving treatment.

Traies, Jane. "The lives and experiences of lesbians over 60 in the UK." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/48420/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers an insight into a section of the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender community that has been consistently under-represented in research. Based on data gathered from some 400 lesbians over 60, this study presents the findings of the first comprehensive survey of older lesbian life to be undertaken in the UK. It complements existing LGBT ageing research (Heaphy, Yip and Thompson, 2003; Cronin and King, 2010; Archibald, 2010; Stonewall, 2011), which has focussed more on men than women; and provides substantial data about a population which has frequently been referred to as ‘invisible' and ‘hard to reach' (Berger, 1982; Kehoe, 1986; Deevey, 1990; Heaphy et al., 2003. etc.). As well as providing a detailed picture of older lesbian life in the UK at the beginning of the 21st century, the thesis specifically addresses the following questions:  just how ‘invisible' are older lesbians? To what extent do they feel able to respond to the more liberal legal and social climate of the early 21st century by ‘coming out of the closet,' even if they have not done so before? What might be their reasons for staying hidden?  do older lesbians conform to the ‘old, sad and alone' stereotype of the ageing homosexual (Dorfman et al., 1995), or to the contrasting view that older non-heterosexuals have built strong support networks (Kehoe, 1988) and offer positive alternative models for ageing (Weeks, Heaphy and Donovan, 2001)?  considering that most LGBT ageing research is based on samples containing more men than women, are there aspects of personal history and ontology specific to older lesbians, which have been obscured by research with a more general ‘LGBT' focus?  given the wide social, political and economic diversity of the research sample and the variety of their life experiences as revealed by the data, do older lesbians really have anything in common other than their sexual orientation? How useful is the term ‘older lesbian' as an identity category?

Bows, Hannah. "Rape and serious sexual assault against women aged 60 and over." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11941/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the vast amount of research attention examining sexual violence against women, and an increase in research around abuse of older people over the last two decades, sexual violence against people aged 60 and over remains under-researched. As the world population continues to rapidly age, there is a pressing need to address this gap in research in order to inform policy and practice in preventing and responding to sexual violence. This thesis contributes to three existing, but currently distinct, fields of inquiry: elder abuse; domestic violence against older women; and sexual violence against older women. A multi-methodological multi-stage approach was adopted to examine the extent and nature of sexual violence against older women in the UK and the characteristics of victims, perpetrators and incidents through analysis of police data gained through Freedom of Information requests. Interviews with 23 practitioners working in sexual violence organsiations and 4 working in age-related organisations shed light on some of the challenges older survivors may experience when accessing support services, the key support needs of older survivors and the extent to which practitioners felt comfortable in meeting those needs. Gaps in current service provision were also explored. In the final stage, three women survivors of sexual violence since the age of 60 shared their stories, in particular the physical and emotional impacts sexual violence had on them and providing accounts of their experiences of accessing support services. Their thoughts on issues with current support provision and existing gaps were also shared. This thesis considers these findings collectively to examine for the first time the extent, nature and impacts of sexual violence against women aged 60 and over.

Jones, Kim Malveo. "STRATEGIES AND SUBSTANCE TREATMENT: PERCEPTIONS OF OLDER ADULTS 60 AND OVER." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/563.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gather the perceive strategies and substance treatment needs of adults 60 and over. To examine what recovery treatment models and strategies could be most effective for the age-related complex needs of the 60 and over population who are at risk for substance misuse, use or abuse. In the coming years, there will be a substantial increase in the numbers of older adults with substance misuse and abuse problems. Even though one in five individuals who experience substance abuse are older adults many clinicians remain ill equipped to serve older clientele, and particularly those who face substance abuse. Furthermore, the diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse among older adults is complicated by assumptions about aging and the complex physical and cognitive changes in late life, each of which can make the manifestation of symptoms difficult to identify. The results indicate that participates has some definitive values that could increase their participation in engaging with substance treatments tailored to their specific age and belief systems.

Abstract:
Introduction: Germ cell tumours comprise approximately 15-20% of all ovarian tumours. Two third of ovarian tumours in first two decades of life are germ cell tumours. Majority of ovarian germ cell tumours are benign teratomas. The malignant germ cell tumours are usually solid and arise from totipotent germ cells. Over the past 3 decades the clinical outcome of women with ovarian germ cell tumours (OGCT) have significantly improved mainly due to development of more effective chemotherapy regimens. Objective: To study the clinic pathological features, treatment and survival of women with ovarian germ cell tumours. Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study taken from the case files of patients with histo-pathologically proven ovarian germ cell tumours who were treated in JIPMER over 8 years from 2007 to 2014. Results: There were totally 63 patients with ovarian germ cell tumours over 8 years who were treated in JIPMER. The age at presentation varies from 12 years to 65 years with a median age of 26.5 years. Three were pre pubertal and 1 was post-menopausal. Twenty two women (34%) were unmarried and 5 were pregnant at the time of presentation. Forty eight (76%) of them did not have any menstrual abnormalities. Pain abdomen (55%) was the most common presentation. Ten of them presented with acute abdomen of which 8 were torsion, 1 was ruptured dermoid and 1 was infected dermoid. Another 6 patients had torsion which was diagnosed only during surgery. Majority (68%) were benign tumours (dermoid) and among malignant tumours, there were 6 dysgerminomas, 5 immature teratomas, 5 mixed germ cell tumours and 4 yolk sac tumours. Almost half (22 out of 43) of women with benign tumours were <25 years whereas 3/4th (14 out of 20) of women with malignant germ cell tumours were <25 years. The most common tumour marker which was elevated was alpha feto protein (8) followed by LDH (5). Fertility sparing surgery (salpingo-ovariotomy) was commonly performed which was 95% (41/43) in benign tumours and 60% (8/20) in malignant tumours. Contra lateral ovary was biopsied in only 5 patients with suspected involvement (negative on final HPR). Out of 20 women with malignant ovarian tumours 7 were in advanced stage (Stage III). Majority of them recovered well from surgery, only 12% had post-operative febrile morbidity and one patient had subclavian vein thrombosis on post op D9 which required anticoagulants. 7 of 20 women received chemotherapy (BEP) for 4 cycles. No serious side effects of chemotherapy were noted in these women. 3 out of 20 women with malignant germ cell tumour were lost to follow up. No recurrences have been found in rest of the women and there are no deaths till last follow up. Conclusion: Advances in the field of medicine like effective chemotherapy regimens, improved imaging, precise surgical staging and fertility sparing surgical procedures enable women not only to preserve the reproductive function but also to improve their quality of life.

Kartha, Sivan, Eric Kemp-Benedict, Emily Ghosh, Anna Nazareth, and Tim Gore. The Carbon Inequality Era: An assessment of the global distribution of consumption emissions among individuals from 1990 to 2015 and beyond. Oxfam, Stockholm Environment Institute, September 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2020.6492.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 25 years from 1990 to 2015, annual global carbon emissions grew by 60%, approximately doubling total global cumulative emissions. This has brought the world perilously close to exceeding 2°C of warming, and it is now on the verge of exceeding 1.5°C. This paper examines the starkly different contributions of different income groups to carbon emissions in this period. It draws on new data that provides much improved insight into global and national income inequality, combined with national consumption emissions over this 25-year period, to provide an analysis relating emissions to income levels for the populations of 117 countries. Future scenarios of carbon inequality are also presented based on different possible trajectories of economic growth and carbon emissions, highlighting the challenge of ensuring a more equitable distribution of the remaining and rapidly diminishing global carbon budget.
