Lindholm, Henrik. "Floating Terminal: Technical Lifetime of 60 Years." Thesis, KTH, Lättkonstruktioner, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-302786.

Full text
Abstract:
Offshore solutions for container infrastructure such as Sea Technologies' floating container terminal can bring both environmental benefits and transport efficiencies for shipping.Large investment costs and requirements for long-term operational reliability for such structures entail the need for long technical service life. Several factors affect and limit the service life of marine structures, including fatigue and corrosion. The container terminal in question is in this context, marine structures, exceptionally large. This means that conventional maintenance of marine structures is not directly applicable and thus noticeable affect complexity of maintenance of the structure. In this work, factors that affect the technical service life and approaches to remedy these factors are investigated for marine structures in general and Sea Technologies' floating container terminal in particular. The purpose of the work has been to investigate possible approaches and technical solutions to meet a technical lifespan of 60 years. This has been done according to methodology from systems engineering with information and facts from studies of technical literature, industry publications and meetings and conversations with industry experts. The work has been limited to a literature study and conversations with experts within the time frames for a master's thesis. Areas affected by the work are corrosion, fatigue and underwater fouling. Lifelimiting factors have been identified in relation to its potential service life impact and maintenance complexity. Furthermore, requirements from stakeholders have been identified in accordance with the engineering of the system. Based on this, possible methods for meeting a life expectancy of 60 years have been investigated. The methods examined can be divided into three categories. These are, design measures, construction measures and maintenance measures. The possible measures examined have been compiled into a collection of recommended measures based on its technical functionality, estimated cost and fulfilment of stakeholder requirements. In summary, the report demonstrates that corrosion and corrosion protection are the most important factor in enabling long service life for this marine structure, both in terms of structural integrity and reliability of operations. Methods for corrosion protection and corrosion control recommended in the report are generally coating systems with extraordinarily long lifespans. Furthermore, a long technical life, also places demands for efficient and functional maintenance. The work therefore also presents recommendations on procedures for efficient maintenance, including the implementation of risk-based inspections and maintenance as well as technical solutions for systematisation and automation of inspections.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes research work that the author has undertaken and published in the field of electronic reliability prediction techniques over the last 25 years. Reliability prediction is an important area since it has been part of the backbone of reliability engineering in one form or another for over fifty years. The author has over 45 publications that are within the area of reliability prediction and 13 of these have been selected for review in this thesis. In order to show how the author’s work has contributed to the field of reliability prediction this document also contains information on the history of reliability prediction. This allows the author’s work to be placed in context with general developments in the field. The contributions to knowledge and innovations that have been made in reliability prediction include the development of statistical models for lifetime prediction using early life data (i.e. prognostics); the use of non-constant failure rates for reliability prediction; the use of neural networks for reliability prediction, the use of artificial intelligence systems to support reliability engineers’ decision making; the use of a holistic approach to reliability; the use of complex discrete events simulation to model equipment availability; demonstration of the weaknesses of classical reliability prediction; an understanding of the basic behaviour of no fault founds; the development of a parametric drift model; identification of the use of a reliability database to improve the reliability of systems; and an understanding of the issues that surround the use of new reliability metrics in the aerospace industry.

Abstract:
Master of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy)
Background: Handwriting is an important activity which is commonly affected after a stroke. Handwriting research has predominantly involved children. In adults, the focus of handwriting research has been identifying forgery, doctors’ handwriting legibility and the kinematics of writing strokes. There are no known studies which provide information on unimpaired adult handwriting in real situations to guide stroke rehabilitation therapists. Aim: This study aims to describe the handwriting practices of 30 unimpaired adults aged 65 years and over to inform adult handwriting rehabilitation. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional observational design. Three data collection methods were used: self-report questionnaire, handwriting samples collected using a digital pen and a handwriting log. Following ethical approval, 30 older adults were recruited using snowball sampling. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: The median age of participants was 72 years. Three-quarters of participants scored less than 4 for legibility on a 4-point scale. A tripod pen grip was used by 97% of the sample. Variations in handwriting were evident in letter size, slant and spacing. Participants wrote very little, an average of three times per day (SD = 1.5) and a median of 18 words per occasion. Most handwriting (85%) involved self-generated, not copied or transcribed text. Participants stood whilst writing for 17% of handwriting occasions. The most common reasons for handwriting were taking notes (23%) and completing puzzles (22%). Discussion: Legibility in older adults may not depend exclusively on the handwriting script that a beginning writer was taught at school, but may be due to other factors, as a person ages. A comprehensive adult handwriting assessment and retraining program should consist of relevant handwriting activities, involve self-generated text and few words. Conclusion: Findings will contribute to the ongoing development of an ecologically valid adult handwriting assessment and help inform stroke rehabilitation practice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between urinary incontinence and self-esteem and also social participation. A convenience sample of 25 women 60 years of age and older participated. Forty-eight percent of the women had urinary incontinence at the time of the study. No significant differences were found in the level of self-esteem between those women with urinary incontinence and those women without urinary incontinence. Two subjects with urinary incontinence reported refusing social participation due to urinary incontinence. However, no difference in the overall level of social participation was found when comparing those with to those without urinary incontinence. A nonsignificant correlation was found between self-esteem and the overall level of social participation. In addition, the relationship between self-esteem and the level of social participation for women with urinary incontinence was nonsignificant. Only two of the 12 subjects with urinary incontinence reported receiving treatment.

Traies, Jane. "The lives and experiences of lesbians over 60 in the UK." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/48420/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers an insight into a section of the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender community that has been consistently under-represented in research. Based on data gathered from some 400 lesbians over 60, this study presents the findings of the first comprehensive survey of older lesbian life to be undertaken in the UK. It complements existing LGBT ageing research (Heaphy, Yip and Thompson, 2003; Cronin and King, 2010; Archibald, 2010; Stonewall, 2011), which has focussed more on men than women; and provides substantial data about a population which has frequently been referred to as ‘invisible' and ‘hard to reach' (Berger, 1982; Kehoe, 1986; Deevey, 1990; Heaphy et al., 2003. etc.). As well as providing a detailed picture of older lesbian life in the UK at the beginning of the 21st century, the thesis specifically addresses the following questions:  just how ‘invisible' are older lesbians? To what extent do they feel able to respond to the more liberal legal and social climate of the early 21st century by ‘coming out of the closet,' even if they have not done so before? What might be their reasons for staying hidden?  do older lesbians conform to the ‘old, sad and alone' stereotype of the ageing homosexual (Dorfman et al., 1995), or to the contrasting view that older non-heterosexuals have built strong support networks (Kehoe, 1988) and offer positive alternative models for ageing (Weeks, Heaphy and Donovan, 2001)?  considering that most LGBT ageing research is based on samples containing more men than women, are there aspects of personal history and ontology specific to older lesbians, which have been obscured by research with a more general ‘LGBT' focus?  given the wide social, political and economic diversity of the research sample and the variety of their life experiences as revealed by the data, do older lesbians really have anything in common other than their sexual orientation? How useful is the term ‘older lesbian' as an identity category?

Bows, Hannah. "Rape and serious sexual assault against women aged 60 and over." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11941/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the vast amount of research attention examining sexual violence against women, and an increase in research around abuse of older people over the last two decades, sexual violence against people aged 60 and over remains under-researched. As the world population continues to rapidly age, there is a pressing need to address this gap in research in order to inform policy and practice in preventing and responding to sexual violence. This thesis contributes to three existing, but currently distinct, fields of inquiry: elder abuse; domestic violence against older women; and sexual violence against older women. A multi-methodological multi-stage approach was adopted to examine the extent and nature of sexual violence against older women in the UK and the characteristics of victims, perpetrators and incidents through analysis of police data gained through Freedom of Information requests. Interviews with 23 practitioners working in sexual violence organsiations and 4 working in age-related organisations shed light on some of the challenges older survivors may experience when accessing support services, the key support needs of older survivors and the extent to which practitioners felt comfortable in meeting those needs. Gaps in current service provision were also explored. In the final stage, three women survivors of sexual violence since the age of 60 shared their stories, in particular the physical and emotional impacts sexual violence had on them and providing accounts of their experiences of accessing support services. Their thoughts on issues with current support provision and existing gaps were also shared. This thesis considers these findings collectively to examine for the first time the extent, nature and impacts of sexual violence against women aged 60 and over.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gather the perceive strategies and substance treatment needs of adults 60 and over. To examine what recovery treatment models and strategies could be most effective for the age-related complex needs of the 60 and over population who are at risk for substance misuse, use or abuse. In the coming years, there will be a substantial increase in the numbers of older adults with substance misuse and abuse problems. Even though one in five individuals who experience substance abuse are older adults many clinicians remain ill equipped to serve older clientele, and particularly those who face substance abuse. Furthermore, the diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse among older adults is complicated by assumptions about aging and the complex physical and cognitive changes in late life, each of which can make the manifestation of symptoms difficult to identify. The results indicate that participates has some definitive values that could increase their participation in engaging with substance treatments tailored to their specific age and belief systems.

Abstract:
In current globalized and highly demanding markets, Quality does not constitute any more a competitive advantage for organizations. Instead, Quality represents a basic market entry requirement for organizations indistinguishable from the country or economic sector they belong to. Being conscious of the importance of Quality for all type of organizations, the purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the identification and better understanding of current trends in academic research on Quality Management. By analyzing a sample of 612 academic papers collected from five international Quality journals and two QMOD international conferences over 2010 and 2011, the author will study and reflect on the current trends of global academic research related to Quality Management. Literature review was used as research methodology for the thesis. Academic papers were categorized, classified and analyzed in order to identify current research trends on Quality Management. This work provides a snapshot of the current research trends on Quality Management. It benefits the educational sector, researchers, industry and practitioners by presenting an overview of the current research needs as well as potential future research topics. As a result of this study, five main trending research topics on Quality Management were identified: management systems standards, total quality management, service quality, customer related processes after delivering product/service and excellence models. China, India, USA, Sweden and UK were identified as the countries that have published the highest number of academic papers in international Quality journals during the studied period. Additionally, it was found a marked predominance of academic research on Quality Management towards the service sector. These results and the answers to five proposed research questions were discussed and solved in this report.

Samples, Jayne. "The pregnancy experiences of women aged 40 years and over." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2017. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/31702/.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing numbers of women are giving birth when older, yet they face being labelled ‘at-risk’ due to associations between their age and complications in pregnancy. The primary aim of this study was to explore the pregnancy experiences of women aged 40 or over from the perspectives of these women and their community midwives, with a particular focus on risk status and risk communication. This research used a grounded theory approach underpinned by symbolic interactionism. Research participants comprised ten pregnant women aged 40 to 47 and their ten named community midwives. One antenatal appointment per woman-midwife pair was audio-recorded during the second trimester of pregnancy, followed by individual interviews with each participant. Some women were interviewed again following antenatal appointments with a consultant obstetrician and all women were re-interviewed three to five weeks postnatally. Data were transcribed and analysed using initial and focused coding techniques. Three concepts were identified from the data. ‘Navigating risks’ involved women’s understanding of their pregnancy-related risks and associated decision-making, from the women’s and midwives’ perspectives. Decision-making is complex and fluid; it can be emotional and may result in older pregnant women going with the flow of health-professional advice. ‘Responsibility’ for choices and for balancing their personal, their families’ and babies’ needs was demonstrated through women’s desire to make the right decisions, sometimes within a state of uncertainty. ‘Enabling relationships’ between older women and their community midwives can contribute to normalising older women’s experiences of pregnancy and developing balanced understandings. Community midwives can be instrumental in optimising older women’s experiences of shared care, although balancing the demands of their workload to meet women’s needs can be challenging. These three concepts are linked and underpinned by the notion of ‘doing the right thing’, which was evident throughout the data. Women’s and midwives’ voices and actions demonstrated a determination to do the right things for themselves, for others and for each other, despite the challenges this might pose. Regardless of experience and efforts to make responsible choices, older pregnant women are likely to have additional needs. Involving them in the development of flexible guidelines to meet these needs could enable care to be more meaningful, supportive and beneficial for older childbearing women and their midwives.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine how the Irish Republican Army has been represented in theatrical cinema since the 1930s. The goal is to demonstrate the necessity for historical accuracy in movies produced for public entertainment, which often neglect historical facts and circumstances in portraying an organization as controversial and complex as the IRA. This has been done by examining five movies produced for wide-distribution and comparing each to the detailed historical record. Upon analysis of these movies, it becomes clear that the films which are the most historically relevant are also the most powerful cinematic productions, both through emotional power and overall entertainment.

Aston, Elizabeth V. "Drug use and offending : the relationship over the teenage years." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29474.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to describe and explain how drug use and offending are linked over the teenage years. This research was conducted in association with the Edinburgh Study of Youth Transitions and Crime, a longitudinal study. I carried out secondary analysis of six sweeps of annual self-report questionnaire data, from age 12 to 17. I also conducted in-depth interviews with 27 cohort members at age 18 to 19. Findings suggest that the relationship between drug use and offending is stronger earlier (as opposed to later) in the teenage years. The social meaning of drug use changes over this period. Early onset drug users described having ‘nothing to do’ and engaged in drug use and offending in street-based peer groups. Those who did not begin using other drugs until later in their teens portrayed their drug use as a legitimate life experience, quite separate from offending. Young people’s drug use and offending can be explained with reference to differential levels of informal social control and peer group interactions. Differential opportunity structures, which change over the course of the teenage years, are shaped by socio-structural positions and informal social controls. It is within the context of peer group interactions that the social acceptability of behaviours may be defined, drug use and offending opportunities occur and decisions are made. Involvement in offending weakens social bonds and deepens involvement in deviant contexts, leading to drug use or further offending. However, ‘turning points’ such as starting one’s own family, gaining employment or changing friendship group facilitate the reduction of involvement in offending and drug use.

Abstract:
Background: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is a determinant of an individual’s ability to handle oxygen during maximal exercise. To measure VO2max expensive equipment and expertise personnel are required. To make the process of measuring VO2max easier, several submaximal and maximal tests have been created in which an estimation of VO2max could be made. Cooper’s 12-minute run (12MR) was created in 1968 and was tested on 115 military men with a mean age of 22 years. Since then the 12MR test has been re- tested and validated towards maximal treadmill tests on several occasions. When an age of 30 years is reached, VO2max starts to decline with 9-10 percent per decade but can be halted by different forms of exercise. With exercise of moderate to high intensity the decline can be halted by almost 50 percent. Objective: To investigate the reliability of estimated VO2max in a test retest scenario of Cooper ́s 12MR on a mixed healthy population between the ages of 28-60. Method: Nine women and five men, healthy subjects with a mean age of 43 ± 8 participated in the present study. A test retest of Cooper ́s 12MR took place with a minimum of seven days between tests. The subjects had to run as many laps as possible on the track during a 12-minute period. Finished laps were then counted and the fraction of the last lap was measured with a measuring wheel and then added to the total distance. To estimate the subjects’ VO2max Cooper ́s table was used. Results: The single measure Intraclass correlation (ICC) that was found, between the estimated VO2max made from the initial test to the retest on Cooper ́s 12MR, was 0.979. ICC showed a small error variance correlation between the tests and was close to the optimal correlation of 1.0. Conclusion: A standardized protocol for performing Cooper ́s 12MR showed good repeatability for estimating VO2max in two separate tests for a mixed population between 28 to 60 years of age.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the performance of Indian banks over the period of the last ten years. It uses the CAMEL Framework to determine the performance of public and private banks in India. The paper also conducts an empirical analysis to determine the share price performance of Indian banks relative to the share price performance of banks in Hong Kong, Europe and the US. This paper finds that private banks perform better than public banks overall based on the CAMEL Framework. In addition it also finds that the Indian banks share price performance is dependent on the share price performance of Hong Kong and European banks, and it has a significant positive relationship with the overall Hong Kong stock market, and this relationship strengthens after 2007. On the whole, this paper seeks to offer as comprehensive a perspective as possible upon the conduct, structure and performance of the banking industry of India.

Allen, Nick. "Injury incidence and severity in professional ballet dancers over three years." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/324082.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the benefits of exercise are well documented, the risk of injury as a result of exercise is also documented. The undertaking of exercise in the form of sport or dance carries a risk of injury. This risk is increased in the professional ranks where increased intensity of exercise coupled with greater exposure periods are noted. Two published systematic reviews of the literature pertaining to musculoskeletal injuries and pain in dancers (up to 2008) indicated that there are still major scientific limitations and biases in the literature reviewed and indicated the need for explicit criteria on injury definition and methods of injury reporting. The reviews did comment on the evidence that musculoskeletal injury is an important issue for all dancers and that there is preliminary evidence that comprehensive injury prevention and management strategies may reduce injuries. The purpose of this single cohort observational study was to document injury incidence and severity in professional ballet dancers over three years including any changes as a result of changes within their medical management. While it is recognised that a randomised control trial would be advocated for an interventional study, due to the demands of this high performance environment this was not feasible. As such, steps were taken to improve the reporting of findings through the utilisation of the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Statement. To date there are two publications in peer reviewed journals as a result of the data collected in this study. In the absence of international consensus on injury data collection in dance the methodology employed in this study was consistent with the International Consensus Statements on injury data collection from sport. Although the incidence of injuries in Year 1 was lower than that in other sports, the results were higher than other studies that have been reported in dance. The reason for this may be due to the use of a more encompassing injury definition. In response to the data and details obtained through the injury audit process changes in the comprehensive medical management of the dancers were implemented. The pre-participation screening was extended and the individual conditioning programmes were structured using the developed Hybrid Intervention Model. The result of the injury auditing indicated a significant reduction in injury incidence in the Year 2, with a further reduction in Year 3. These findings support the results of the systematic reviews in that there is growing evidence that comprehensive injury prevention and management strategies may reduce injuries in dance and that in the absence of stronger evidence there is a strong recommendation for those charged with caring for professional dancers to implement comprehensive medical management programmes.

Kaiser, Alison J. "Bidirectional Relations of Impulsive Personality and Alcohol Use Over Two Years." UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/psychology_etds/72.

Full text
Abstract:
Impulsive personality traits have been found to be robust predictors of substance use and problems in both cross-sectional and longitudinal research. Studies examining the relations of substance use and impulsive personality over time indicate bidirectional effects, where substance use is also predictive of increases in later impulsive personality. The mechanism(s) accounting for the impact of substance use on later personality remain unknown. The present study sought to explore the bidirectional relations of alcohol use with the impulsive personality traits over three time points, and to examine two potential mechanisms that could account for the impact of alcohol use on personality: the development of alcohol-related problems and social norms for substance use. Participants were 525 college students (48.0% male, 81.1% Caucasian), who completed self-report measures assessing personality traits and a structured interview assessing past and current substance use. Data collection took place at three different time points: the first occurred during participants’ first year of college (T1), and follow-ups took place approximately one-year (T2) and two-years (T3) later. Bidirectional relations were examined using structural equation modeling to control for the relations among the variables of interest within time points and the stability of the variables across time. T1 sensation seeking and lack of premeditation predicted higher levels of alcohol use at T3, and T1 alcohol use predicted higher levels of all three impulsive traits at T3. T2 friend norms for drug use were found to significantly mediate the relation between T1 alcohol use and T3 sensation seeking, and T2 alcohol problems were found to significantly mediate the relation between T1 alcohol use and T3 negative urgency. Findings provide greater resolution in characterizing the bidirectional relation between impulsive personality traits and substance use, and demonstrate that sensation seeking and negative urgency are impacted through distinct mechanisms.

Abstract:

Sale, Hannah. "A study of narrative identity in the life stories of lesbians aged 60-70 years old." Thesis, University of East London, 2015. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/4433/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the narrative identity construction of six self-identified lesbians born between 1945 and1950. This generation of women who are now in their sixties and seventies have lived through immense social change including the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the gay rights movement, civil partnership and gay marriage. They are the first generation to have the opportunity to live openly as lesbians. This study is interested in the impact of such significant social change on their identity construction. The study used semi-structured in-depth interviews to ask six participants how they had experienced living with a lesbian identity. All participants were white and UK born. All were educated to at least degree level and all were in or retired from professional employment. Data was analysed using narrative method grounded in a social constructionist epistemology. Four themes emerged: 1) Participants reported feeling marginalised as children, and unable or unwilling to fulfil the life trajectory expected of them; 2) Finding a community, usually a feminist or lesbian group enabled the development of a positive lesbian identity; 3) Lesbian identity was constructed as more than a sexual identity, rather as a political identity and a way of life; 4) Participants constructed an overall life-narrative of redemption, a narrative which progressed from struggle to satisfaction. The study examines the particular discourses used in identity construction. It is argued that participants are influenced by inversion model, feminist, queer and redemptive narrative discourses. The benefits of using a social constructionist approach for LGBT research are discussed in order to offer a critique of psychology’s role in constructing subjects as well as to gain a fuller picture of participants’ social and political worlds. The implications of this study’s findings for counselling psychology are discussed.

Abstract:
Among the multiple roles of a school psychologist is consultation. The Mental Health, Organizational, and Behavioral models of consultation are reported in publications by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) to be the prominent models in the field of school psychology. However, no supporting data are cited; thus it is unclear whether these three consultation models are the most prominent in school psychology today. The current study evaluated the consultation literature over the past twenty-two years in the professional journal School Psychology Review. Consultation articles were analyzed to obtain information regarding the frequency of consultation articles published, the most frequent types of consultation mentioned, topics addressed, and the type of research conducted. Data collected found a minimal decrease in the amount of consultation articles published over the past twenty-two years. A wide array of terminology was found in referring to types of consultation. Behavioral consultation was found to be the most frequently researched and mentioned model. The Mental Health consultation model was fairly prominent but the Organization model was rarely presented. Numerous other consultation models were reported in the literature.

Abstract:
The objective of this research is to interpret high-resolution palaeo-proxy data sets to understand the Asian summer monsoon variability in the past. This was done by synthesizing published palaeo-records from the Asian monsoon region, model simulation comparisons, and analysing new lake sedimentary records from northeast Thailand. Palaeo-records and climate modeling indicate a strengthened summer monsoon over Mainland Southeast Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), compared to dry conditions in other parts of the Asian monsoon region. This can be explained by the LGM sea level low stand, which exposed Sundaland and created a large land-sea thermal contrast. Sea level rise ~19 600 years before present (BP), reorganized the atmospheric circulation in the Pacific Ocean and weakened the summer monsoon between 20 000 and 19 000 years BP. Both the Mainland Southeast Asia and the East Asian monsoon hydroclimatic records point to an earlier Holocene onset of strengthened summer monsoon, compared to the Indian Ocean monsoon. The asynchronous evolution of the summer monsoon and a time lag of 1500 years between the East Asian and the Indian Ocean monsoon can be explained by the palaeogeography of Mainland Southeast Asia, which acted as a land bridge for the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The palaeo-proxy records from Lake Kumphawapi compare well to the other data sets and suggest a strengthened summer monsoon between 10 000 and 7000 years BP and a weakening of the summer monsoon thereafter. The data from Lake Pa Kho provides a picture of summer monsoon variability over 2000 years. A strengthened summer monsoon prevailed between BC 170-AD 370, AD 800-960 and since AD 1450, and was weaker about AD 370-800 and AD 1300-1450. The movement of the mean position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone explains shifts in summer monsoon intensity, but weakening of the summer monsoon between 960 and 1450 AD could be affected by changes in the Walker circulation.

Green, Timothy Stephen. "A study of brightest cluster galaxies over the last five billion years." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12338/.

Full text
Abstract:
The location of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), at the centre of the clusters of galaxies, suggests a strong link between the formation and evolution of the BCG and that of the host cluster; with their unique environment distinguishing BCG evolution from that of massive field ellipticals. In this thesis I explore some of the contributing factors to the unique evolution of BCGs. In particular, I investigate the interaction of gas cooling from the intracluster medium (ICM) and the BCG, in fuelling star formation and AGN activity in BCGs, as well as the properties of the multi-phase gas itself. I also investigate the stellar mass growth of BCGs through galaxy--galaxy mergers. I attempt to constrain the prevalence of BCGs undergoing star formation and/or AGN activity by conducting a multi-wavelength photometric census of 981 BCGs, from an X-ray selected sample of clusters at z < 0.5. It is found that at least 14 per cent of the BCGs have colours which deviate from those expected for a passively evolving galaxy. A strong association is discovered between BCG colours and optical line emission, indicating the presence of multi-phase gas and a strong association is also discovered between BCG colour and the X-ray luminosity of the host cluster, with implications regarding the proportion of active BCGs and the selection of a particular sample of clusters. These results demonstrate that a significant fraction of BCGs are in fact active, contrary to their ``red and dead'' reputation. The theme of AGN activity in BCGs is continued via an investigation searching for clusters around some 3500 ROSAT selected AGN. The aim is to address the ambiguity that exists between clusters and AGN in low resolution X-ray imaging, which disfavours the detection of the inherently rare systems where a strong AGN is hosted by a BCG. I identify 22 candidate systems with significant overdensities of red galaxies, with several being independent rediscoveries of such systems. Six best candidate systems are found where the cluster and AGN X-ray emission are likely to be comparable. Identification of such systems will ultimately aid in our understanding of the role of AGN feedback in this unique environment. The stellar mass assembly of BCGs at z < 0.25 is also explored, targeting 23 merger--like BCGs, drawn from a large parent cluster sample, with wide-field integral field spectroscopy. The stellar kinematics are used to determine a bound probability for companion cluster galaxies and average merger timescales are estimated. Due to selection effects the average BCG stellar mass growth cannot be constrained tighter than between 9(+/-3) and 57(+20/-17) per cent, with typical values in the literature of 10-20 per cent. Nevertheless, the techniques utilised in this analysis should help lay the groundwork for subsequent studies; demonstrating the power of using a statistically significant number of IFU observations to study BCG mergers. Spatially resolved optical line emission is also explored in ten cluster cores. A variety of morphologies and kinematic profiles are discovered, and the properties of each individual system are discussed in turn. The most striking results relate to two systems where the ionised gas lies offset from the BCG. An X-ray observation of A2566 confirms the X-ray peak is offset from the BCG and coincident with the offset line emission, which, along with previous observations, suggest cooling of the ICM can occur in isolation of, and away from, the BCG -- likely related to sloshing of the ICM. A 40 kpc filament is discovered in A2533, offset from the BCG and spatially coincident with star formation and dust lane features in the continuum. An ALMA observation also finds cold molecular gas, which almost perfectly traces the warm ionised gas. Without a high resolution X-ray observation a definitive link between the offset emission and the ICM cannot be established for this system, however, we predict the X-ray peak will be offset, analogous to A2566. Such systems allow the rare opportunity of studying cooling flows in isolation of the role of AGN feedback within BCGs.

Abstract:
Many studies have investigated the evolution of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) Ocean paleoceanography since the late Neogene because of its role in regulating the Earth’s climate and because global climate has undergone major changes during this time period. However, current understanding of the EEP paleoceanography encounters two basic problems. First, this region is characterized by steep east-west and meridional gradients in Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) and biological productivity, which can vary from one year to another. Second, the seafloor lies below the lysocline in most of the area, leading to poor preservation of biogenic carbonate. As a result, sediments from the EEP exhibit major changes in their physical and compositional properties over short time, and hence sediment depth, increments. Therefore, the study of bulk sediment properties is crucial to further understand the paleoceanography of EEP during the past 8 Myr. Bulk sediment properties are highly appropriate proxies for achieving highly resolved and time comparable SST and biological productivity data because changes in such properties can be traced across the EEP over large distances. This thesis presents two manuscripts. In Paper 1 we examine the positive second-order relationship between wet bulk density (WBD) and carbonate content of sediments from the EEP. This relationship is important because it can be used to determine high-resolution carbonate content records. In Paper 2 we examine bulk sediment stable isotopes records from the EEP to understand what these records actually represent and whether these records are robust across the EEP. The main conclusions of these studies are (1) a single two-component equation cannot be used to determine carbonate content from the WBD. Instead, the WBD-carbonate relationship can only be described by an infinite series of curves representing the mixing of different components; (2) bulk sediment stable isotope records are robust across the EEP and changes in grain-size are not the primary cause of variations of these records.

Abstract:
Environmental monitoring, assessment and conservation programmes worldwide have led to the development of scientific and technological methods to study the changes in our environment. As a result, a technique for monitoring atmospheric metal deposition was developed in Sweden in the 1960s. This technique is based on the principle that, carpet-forming moss obtains its nutrients from dry deposition particles in the air. The Swedish Environmental Research institute (IVL) has a database of concentrations of metals in terrestrial mosses. These were sampled during the national moss surveys (1975 – 2000). From these point data, long-term changes in the deposition loads can be studied. One aim of this project is to create continuous surfaces for these point data and to develop a technique to map the spatio-temporal changes. It also seeks to quantify the temporal changes in metal loads of the moss data for over 20 years. With the amount of data increasing from various air quality assessments and monitoring methods, it is prudent to approach the data analysis from a multidisciplinary perspective. By using statistics, geostatistic, GIS and visualization methods, the quantitative, spatial and temporal trends of the moss surveys were analysed. Multidimensional visualizations based on exploratory data analysis were applied to the data to visualize and reveal trends in the multivariate data. The project area comprised the whole Sweden with the data from 1975 to 2000, with the exception of the moss survey in 1975, which was conducted only in southern Sweden. A combination of GIS, geostatistics and high dimensional visualization techniques were applied in the data cleaning and analysis stages. The results of the project show the rate of change of metal loads over the years and the spatial distribution of the metal depositions as well. The visual approach used from the data cleaning to results presentation makes it easily comprehensible to non-scientist as well.

Abstract:
Researcher Frederick Woodress has added another study, one on media as it has impacted the elderly, to the large 65-year-old data bank for Muncie Indiana's "Middletown." The basic data was established in 1924 when Robert and Helen Lynd, pioneer sociologists, arrived in the Midwestern town to research and write their Middletown books. This new study covers 553 males and females ages 19 to 92--400 over 60 selected at random by computer, 75 in the 30 to 50 group, also selected at random by computer, and 78 journalism students. The elderly and 30 to 50 year-olds were interviewed by telephone while the students completed questionnaires face-to-face.As part of this investigation, Woodress surveyed prominent newspaper columnists, TV news people and editors about their perceptions of the media's coverage of the elderly. With 53 percent return, the author summarized the results of this mail survey. The 14 mediums examined included television, radio, newspapers, tabloids, magazines, books, comics, computers, VCR's and motion pictures. Complaints and compliments were expressed about various media with television rating as the medium the respondents of all ages would miss the most with newspapers a distant second. Elderly respondents displayed a strong interest in television, newspapers, magazines and books, spent considerable time listening to police/fire radio scanners and showed some interest in using computers. The elderly were very critical of the movie industry and two-thirds said they had not attended a movie for at least a year. Almost one-third of the 30-50 age group also admitted they had not attended a movie theater showing for a year, but all groups were watching movies on television, cable and VCR's.All three groups commented on the media coverage of the 1988 presidential election campaign and told what activities they would rather be doing than reading newspapers, listening to radio or watching television. This study is an overview of the growing elderly population, a group given scant attention in previous Middletown studies. It provides important insights for the media concerning this growing segment of the population.

Abstract:
The Portuguese woman of the 60s/70s is the subject of this study. Because they were limited to the rules of a time and space "isolated" of the world, where a simple and individual act of expression became very complex and dangerous. Portugal lived in difficult times. While the rest of the world felt the effects and the euphoria of the end of World War II Portugal remained, and still for many years, under the rules of a lasting and obsolete system (started in 1926) entitled Estado Novo and led by his founder, António de Oliveira Salazar. The Portuguese women, whatever was their status - mother, wife, homemaker, employed - felt the effects and the weight of their time, the story that/who was destined to them. Until which point women influenced and were influenced by the system? How and how much women were part of this movement? How far away was allowed to them go and what were their struggles, thoughts and actions in favor or against the boundary delimited by the dictatorship? As citizens of our country, despite the restrictions imposed by the government, what were the forms used to express and be heard and see? The clothing is one of many ways that human beings have to express themselves. It is often used as an object, or used directly or indirectly to convey an idea, an action, a dislike. Being the woman a highly consumerist and vain being, how she "used" the clothing to achieve certain objectives, in 60 years in Portugal, specifically? How fashion can be connected with the political events of that era? And how was the position of Portuguese women in the rest of the world? If an explosion of events was happening outside our borders and we were "stuck" in time, when we reached that boom? How was it? We intended, with this investigation, answer all these historical questions, and always with women's clothing as central and crucial subject of study. The aim is thus to achieve a relationship between the Portuguese woman and her clothing with the policy of the past (years 60/70), and try to prove the importance of such a link.

Abstract:
I conduct the first comparative analysis of long term human population stability in North America. Questions regarding population stability among animals and plants are fundamental to population ecology, yet no anthropological research has addressed human population stability. This is an important knowledge gap, because a species’ population stability can have implications for its risk of extinction and for the stability of the ecological community in which it lives. I use archaeological and paleoclimatological data to compare long term population stability with subsistence strategy and climate stability over 6,000 years. I conduct my analysis on a large scale to better understand general trends between population stability, subsistence strategy, and climate stability. I found that agricultural sequences fluctuate less than hunter-gatherer sequences in general, but they also experience rare, extreme population swings not seen among hunter-gatherers. I suggest that agriculturalists are more vulnerable to population collapses because of their increased population densities. I found that population stability shows a weak relationship with climate stability. Climate stability may have an indirect effect on long-term population stability.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) is a type of Sensory Modulation Disorder (SMD), where the individual has an over-responsive behavioural reaction to non-harmful or non-threatening sensory stimulation, which is out of proportion to the stimulus. SOR can negatively impact a child’s engagement and performance in their daily life. SOR is frequently diagnosed by occupational therapists, and deep pressure is an important facet of the treatment of SOR by occupational therapists. Prior research (Alberts & Ronca, 2012) indicates that the component of pressure in the vaginal birth process aids the infant’s neurophysiological adaption to extra-uterine life. This component is absent in elective caesarean section births. This study therefore set out to determine whether method of birth could be associated with SOR, as well as investigating demographic and other variables linked to SOR. It was hypothesised that there would be a higher prevalence of SOR in children aged 3-5 years born by elective caesarean section compared to those born by vaginal birth. The study objectives were: • To establish a profile (demographic and variables linked to SOR) of participants (mother-child dyads) by birth method group (CS or vaginal delivery) • To determine the prevalence of SOR by birth method • To establish if there is a statistically significant difference in SOR and birth method • To establish which variables (for example birth weight, jaundice, birth complications) are associated with SOR METHOD: A quantitative, descriptive, analytical study was conducted with a sample of 91 children between the ages of 3 years 0 months and 4 years 11 months. Children across various language, cultural and socio-economic groups were recruited and allocated to two groups based on their method of birth - vaginal delivery and elective caesarean section. Caregivers of each child completed the Short Sensory Profile 2 (SSP2) questionnaire as well as a demographic information questionnaire. The scores for SOR were calculated for each participant, and prevalence of SOR between the two birth method groups was compared. Demographic variables were tested for significance between the two groups. The variables showing a significant difference were further analysed to determine any association with SOR. RESULTS: There were 91 participants, 58 in the VB group and 33 in the CS group. Mothers in the VB group gave birth at a younger age (U = 499.0, p < .001), were of a lower income level (chi-square = 11.49, df = 2, p = .003) and more likely to be single (Fishers exact p (2-tailed) = .037). The children in the VB group were of a greater gestational age (U = 472.5, p = .001), had a shorter time period before the first breastfeed (U = 478.0, p = .006), and had fewer sleeping difficulties (Fishers exact p (2-tailed) = .003). The prevalence of SOR for the total sample was 22%. There was a significant association in SOR prevalence and birth method (Fishers exact p (2-tailed) = .034), with greater prevalence in the VB group (29%) as opposed to the elective CS group (9%). There were statistically significant associations between SOR and maternal age (U = 380.5, p = .004), marital status (Fishers exact p (2-tailed) = .003) and time after birth to the first breastfeed (U = 394.5, p = .049). CONCLUSION: There was a statistically significant difference in SOR between the two birth method groups, with higher prevalence in the VB group. This was thought to be linked to cultural and language challenges associated with the use of the SSP2, and the impact of low socio-economic circumstances on child development and the ability to regulate sensory input. Recommendations include developing and validating a culturally appropriate sensory profile questionnaire, available in the most common official languages to facilitate the accurate assessment of sensory modulation of all children living in South Africa. In addition, there is a need to test the birth method hypothesis in demographically balanced groups.

Abstract:
In 1815 the Blue Mountains were first identified as a unique landscape when Governor Macquarie took a tour over them and located the nineteenth century principles of the Sublime and Picturesque within its' landscape. Until this time the Blue Mountains were considered to be a hostile impenetrable barrier to the West. This paper examines some of the ways the Blue Mountains has been represented in the past, and has been identified as a tourist destination through interpretations imposed on the landscape by the tourist industry since that time. The areas covered deal with the heritage of British Colonialism as a way of forming opinions about the Australian landscape. Then, the theories of the Picturesque and Sublime are examined when applied to the Blue Mountains landscape. The final chapters in this paper deal with contemporary issues that have shaped the way the tourist industry is encouraged to encounter the Blue Mountains landscape
