Abstract. Manganrockbridgeite, Mn22+Fe33+(PO4)3(OH)4(H2O), is a new member of the rockbridgeite group, from the Hagendorf-Süd pegmatite, Oberpfalz, Bavaria. It occurs in association with frondelite, kenngottite, hureaulite and hematite. It forms compact intergrowths and clusters of shiny greenish black blades up to 200 µm long and 20 µm wide but only a few micrometres thick. The crystals are elongated on [100] and flattened on {001}, with perfect cleavage parallel to {001}. Individual thin blades are green in transmitted light and red under crossed polars. The calculated density is 3.40 g cm−3

Abstract BACKGROUND The transciliary supraorbital approach (TCSO) provides an anterior view for visualizing sellar, parasellar, and suprasellar structures. Whether an orbital osteotomy adds to this exposure has not been quantified. OBJECTIVE We quantitatively evaluated the TCSO and benefits of an additional orbital osteotomy for exposing common sites of anterior circulation aneurysms. METHODS Under image guidance, TCSO and orbital osteotomy were performed on 10 sides of 5 cadaver heads to quantify exposures of 4 surgical targets: (1) the junction of the anterior cerebral and anterior communica

High-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a severe form of altitude illness that can occur in young healthy individuals, is a noncardiogenic form of edema that is associated with high concentrations of proteins and cells in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid (Schoene et al., J. Am. Med. Assoc. 256: 63–69, 1986). We hypothesized that acute mountain sickness (AMS) in which gas exchange is impaired to a milder degree is a precursor to HAPE. We therefore performed BAL with 0.89% NaCl by fiberoptic bronchoscopy in eight subjects at 4,400 m (barometric pressure = 440 Torr) on Mt. McKinley to evaluate th

OBJECTIVE Optimal strategies for fixation in the osteoporotic lumbar spine remain a clinical issue. Classic transpedicular fixation in the osteoporotic spine is frequently plagued with construct instability, often due to inadequate cortical screw–bone purchase. A cortical bone trajectory maximizes bony purchase and has been reported to provide increased screw pullout strength. The aim of the current investigation was to evaluate the biomechanical efficacy of cortical spinal fixation as a surgical alternative to transpedicular fixation in the osteoporotic lumbar spine under physiological loadin

The metabolism of tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) blastocysts was analysed by means of quantitative fluorescence microscopy during embryonic diapause and 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 days after reactivation to determine nutrient preferences during metabolic reactivation of the blastocyst. The surface area of quiescent blastocysts was 0.16 +/- 0.02 mm2 (mean +/- s.e.m.), and increased to 0.44 +/- 0.04 mm2 (P < 0.05) by Day 8 after removal of the sucking stimulus of the pouch young (RPY). Interferon (IFN) is activated in response to virus infections and upregulates interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) resulting in the expression of hundreds of proteins, many of which have direct or indirect antiviral activity. Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) of the Paramyxoviridae family is a non-segmented negative sense single-stranded RNA virus with seven genes encoding eight proteins. Here we present that IFN induces alterations in the pattern of both virus transcription and translation and that ISG56 is primarily responsible for these effects. We report that when cells were treated with IFN post

Depression is one of the most common causes of periods of disability. There is evidence suggesting that the serotonin system is involved in the pathophysiology of depression. It has been suggested that synaptic serotonin levels are reduced in depressed patients, and that pharmacological blockade with antidepressants of the serotonin transporter (SERT) would result in alleviated symptoms of depression by enhancing serotonin neurotransmission. Since depression can be treated with antidepressants that target SERT, and a recently discovered 5-HTT gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) of the SE
