Abstract.—We examined the status and population characteristics of Kootenai River burbot Lota lota using capture–recapture data from 1993 to 2004. Our objective was to determine when this population may become functionally extinct and to help guide conservation efforts. A total of 403 burbot were captured, of which 300 were tagged and released, 31 were not tagged, and 72 were recaptures of fish tagged up to 4 years prior. Hoop-net catch per unit effort, where one unit of effort is a hoop-net set for 24 h, declined from 0.054 in 1996 to 0.008 in 2004. Mean total length of sampled burbot increased at a rate of about 8 mm/year from 1993 (516 mm) to 2004 (629 mm). Two models were developed for capture–recapture analysis, one that included effort data through a series of river reaches and one without effort data. The effort model appeared to be more reliable and suggested an average annual mortality rate for adult burbot (>250 mm) of 63%, an average annual recruitment of 77 fish, and an average estimate of 148 burbot in the Kootenai River from 1996 through 2004. Average declines in recruitment and population abundance were estimated to be 21% and 14% per year, respectively, resulting in estimates of only 20 recruits and a population size of only 50 burbot in 2004. These data confirm that Kootenai River burbot are in serious decline and may have already reached functional extinction. We conclude that immediate remedial measures must be implemented by focusing on rehabilitation of the native genetic stock and habitat remediation described in other studies.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This work presents new geochronological and mineralogical data to investigate the provenance of sediments accumulated in deep-water environments in the southern and southwestern regions of the Gulf of Mexico during the Cenozoic. We integrated U-Pb geochronology with heavy and light minerals data to better understand the provenance of the Paleocene–Miocene strata and the evolution of the sediment source terranes. The analyzed samples came from drill cuttings of sandy levels in five exploration wells offshore in the Gulf of Mexico: Puskon-1, Aktum-1, Kunah-1, Kabilil-1, and Chuktah-201. The material contained abundant barite, a component of the drilling mud. Consequently, a semiquantitative approach to discriminate mineral phases and to quantify concentrations was used. Overall, we recognized 10 zircon populations that range from Proterozoic to Cenozoic ages. Proterozoic ages show a prominent peak at ca. 1.0 Ga and a minor peak at ca. 1.8 Ga. The Neoproterozoic to Cambrian population displays a broad distribution with a peak at ca. 600 Ma. Ordovician–Silurian zircons exhibit minor peaks at ca. 460 and 445 Ma. Devonian and Carboniferous zircons are very scarce in our data set. Permian–Triassic zircons are abundant, and they show a prominent peak at ca. 255 Ma and a minor one at ca. 228 Ma. Jurassic zircons are not common and display several minor peaks at ca. 185, 170, and 155 Ma. The Early Cretaceous population displays a noticeable peak at ca. 120 Ma. Late Cretaceous–Paleocene zircons exhibit several peaks at ca. 92, 82, 72, and 65 Ma. Cenozoic zircons also display several prominent peaks at ca. 40, 35, 25, and 18 Ma. Zircons of Proterozoic to Early Cretaceous ages are interpreted to be derived from the Mesozoic sedimentary cover of basement blocks in southern and eastern Mexico terranes due to their rounded to subrounded morphology. Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic zircons are the most abundant populations in the analyzed samples. These zircon populations exhibit euhedral and subhedral morphology indicating derivation from primary sources in the magmatic arcs. This has important implications in assessing the reservoir quality, since the sediments were directly delivered from the magmatic arc into the deep-water environments. Our results allow us to conclude that the sedimentary provenance of the southwestern and southern strata in the Gulf of Mexico was not associated with Laurentian terranes, as has been proposed for Late Cretaceous–Paleogene strata of northern Mexico and the northern Gulf of Mexico, such as the world-class Wilcox-type hydrocarbon reservoirs. We propose that the provenance of the analyzed strata was related to the tectono-magmatic evolution of the southern Mexico terranes during the Cenozoic; therefore, large NW-SE dispersal systems that eroded Laurentian terranes in the southern United States did not deliver sediments into the southern sectors of the Gulf of Mexico, probably constrained by the Tamaulipas Arch and the Gulf Stream.

"through tubing and fittings made of PTFE. Analysis was undertaken by the Warren Spring Laboratory of the Department of Trade and Industry, according to the method described by Bailey and Bedbo rough The results are shown in Table IV. and plotted in Fig. 3. and 4. Table IV. Variation of odour strength of extracted samples with volune of eluted air Volume of air Strength of odour samples passing through (dilutions) sludge before sampling (1/1) Raw sludge Digested sludge 0 154 000 9 900 11.1 53 000 350 22.2 30 600 270 55.6 15 500 190 111 8 200 160 It is clear from these results that there is considerable die-off of odour strength with time, and that, as would be expected, the anaerobic digestion of sludge can reduce the odour potential by at least one order of magnitude. To illustrate the importance of this die-off effect, the results have been re-plotted in Fig. 5. in a cunulative form; that is to say as cumulative percentage of the eventual colour release against volume of air. In the case of the raw sewage sludge, 38% of the ultimate odour was carried in the first odour sample, and 90% of the odour had been extracted by the passage of about 200 1. In the case of the anaerobically digested sludge, the same effect is much more marked; 72% of the ultimate odour was carried by the first sample, and thereafter the strength of the odour fell off very rapidly. There are two possible explanations for this. First, it can be postulated that as it is known that many of the important odorous chemical species are highly volatile, they may be only physically trapped in the sludge, and need little encouragement to transfer to the atmosphere. An alternative explanation concerns the existence of two equilibria. As the vapour/liquid equilibrium is disturbed by the passage of air, the concentration of dissolved compounds in the liquid phase falls, disturbing the ’solid’/liquid equilibrium The kinetics of transfer across this latter phase boundary are much slower than for the liquid/vapour transfer, so that the extraction of odour becomes limited by the rate of diffusion into the liquid phase. Two observations may be cited as evidence for this latter view. First, when sludge is applied to land, there is a rapid tail-off of odour nuisance after spreading. Hie incidence of rain after a dry period is known to result in an increased evolution of odour. Second, in earlier experiments samples of sludge were centrifuged, and the supernatant liquor discarded and replaced by tap water, before being used in the standard odour potential test. Some re-extraction of odour from the samples was rapidly found. In practice, both postulated mechanisms are probably at work, especially if the concept of ’solid/liquid equilibrium’ be extended to." Seagrasses are flowering monocot green plants that have adapted to marine life, and remain completely immersed in seawater and are primary producers of food for numerous marine animals. Seagrasses are of worldwide distribution and it was earlier estimated that there are approximately 60-72 known species of seagrasses. It is now evident that the number of seagrasses species is almost 200, comprising 25 genera and 5 families, namely Cymodoceaceae, Hydrocharitaceae, Posidoniaceae, Zosteraceae and Ruppiaceae, covering a global area of 300,000-600,000 km2. It is also estimated that they have declin

At present, amplitude modulation is preferred for the distribution of cable television signals, although it places stringent requirements on carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) and linearity.1 For example, consider a system consisting of a 200-mW laser with relative intensity noise of −165 dB/Hz, fiber coupling of −35 dB, external interferometric modulator with 6-dB insertion loss, link loss of 5 dB, and receiver with rms noise current of 15 pA/(Hz)1/2 and operating at an optical modulation depth (OMD) of 1% per channel. In principle this system limits the broadcasting of 40 channels with a desired C

Abstract:
Between April 2020 and January 2022, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) commissioned a quarterly survey on consumer handwashing. Key findings from this survey are: Across all waves of the handwashing tracker, participants were most likely to report washing their hands with soap and warm water. However, the proportion who reported handwashing with soap and warm water ‘always’ or ‘most of the time’ declined over time (79% April 2020, compared to 68% in January 2022). Most participants reported washing their hands for between 20 and 24 seconds across all waves. However, the proportion who reported t

Background An estimated 292 million people are living with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection globally, including 223,000 people in Australia. HBV diagnosis and linkage of people living with HBV to clinical care is suboptimal in Australia, with 27% of people living with HBV undiagnosed and 77% not receiving regular HBV clinical care. This systematic review aimed to characterize population-level interventions implemented to enhance all components of HBV care cascade and analyse the effectiveness of interventions. Review questions Question 1: What population-level interventions, programs
