Few Islamic teachings can boast the fame, if not the notoriety, enjoyed by the doctrine of “unity of existence”, also known as “unity of being” (waḥdat al-wujūd). This controversialphilosophical doctrine became intimately associated with the towering figure of the Arabmystic of al-Andalus, Muḥyī'l-Dīn Ibn 'Arabī (d. 638/1240). Although Ibn 'Arabī himselfdoes not seem to have applied this ambiguous term to his loosely structured meta physical speculations, it gained wide currency among his followers starting from the celebrated Anatolian thinker Ṣadr al-Dīh al-Qūnawī (d. 673/1274).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Ets-1 transcription factor plays a critical role in cell growth and development, but the means by which it activates transcription are still unclear (J. C. Bories, D. M. Willerford, D. Grevin, L. Davidson, A. Camus, P. Martin, D. Stehelin, F. W. Alt, and J. C. Borles, Nature 377:635–638, 1995; N. Muthusamy, K. Barton, and J. M. Leiden, Nature 377:639–642, 1995). Here we show that Ets-1 binds the transcriptional coactivators CREB binding protein (CBP) and the related p300 protein (together referred to as CBP/p300) and that this interaction is required for specific Ets-1 transactivation functions. The Ets-1- and c-Myb-dependent aminopeptidase N (CD13/APN) promoter and an Ets-1-dependent artificial promoter were repressed by adenovirus E1A, a CBP/p300-specific inhibitor. Furthermore, Ets-1 activity was potentiated by CBP and p300 overexpression. The transactivation function of Ets-1 correlated with its ability to bind an N-terminal cysteine- and histidine-rich region spanning CBP residues 313 to 452. Ets-1 also bound a second cysteine- and histidine-rich region of CBP, between residues 1449 and 1892. Both Ets-1 and CBP/p300 formed a stable immunoprecipitable nuclear complex, independent of DNA binding. This Ets-1–CBP/p300 immunocomplex possessed histone acetyltransferase activity, consistent with previous findings that CBP/p300 is associated with such enzyme activity. Our results indicate that CBP/p300 may mediate antagonistic and synergistic interactions between Ets-1 and other transcription factors that use CBP/p300 as a coactivator, including c-Myb and AP-1.

Abstract:
Abstract The following article aims at analyzing various classifications of knowledge that are found in the literature of classical Islamic mysticism. The discussion focuses on two main corpora: Sufi writings, composed in the central and eastern parts of the Islamic world, and works by the Andalusī mystics or theosophists Ibn Masarra (d. 319/931), Ibn Barraǧān (d. 536/1141), Ibn Qasī (d. 546/1151), and Muḥyī l-Dīn Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240). The article examines the discrepancies between the Eastern-Sufi and Andalusī taxonomies of knowledge, in an attempt to highlight the typological differences between these two mystical traditions of classical Sunnī Islam.

Abstract:
In general, hydrogen permeabilityΦ of the alloy membrane is expressed as the product of the hydrogen diffusion coefficient D and the hydrogen solution coefficient K. Therefore, to improve the hydrogen permeability efficiently, the values of K and D should be separately considered. In the present study, hydrogen absorption and permeation behaviors of the Nb19Ti40Ni41 alloy consisting of the eutectic phase are investigated by measuring pressure-composition-isotherm (PCI) and by the hydrogen flow method and compared with those of palladium. The hydrogen absorption in the Nb19Ti40Ni41 alloy does not obey the Sieverts’ law in the pressure region of 0-1.0MPa at 523K, but it shows linear relationship between the difference in the square root of hydrogen pressure and hydrogen content between 0.1 and 0.4MPa. Although the value of D for the Nb19Ti40Ni41 alloy is considerably lower than that of palladium, its high K value enhances the hydrogen permeability Φ. It is suggested that the enhancement of D by microstructural control for Nb19Ti40Ni41 alloy is effective for improvement of Φ.

Abstract:
The present investigation attempted to optimize the R-D (reduction-diffusion) process for fabricating Sm2Fe17 nanoscale powder from ball-milled powders of samarium oxide and iron oxide using a solid reducing agent of calcium hydrides (CaH2). It was found that the target alloy phase of Sm2Fe17 can be produced by controlling the gas atmosphere in the process of powder preparation to R-D reaction. Powder handling of CaH2 in a protective atmosphere is essential to avoid the formation of Ca(OH)2 which suppresses calcium formation. A switching gas atmosphere of H2 to Ar-H2 during the R-D process at 350oC resulted in a reduction of Fe2O3 and alloying of Sm-Fe, consequently forming nanocrystalline Sm2Fe17.

Abstract:
Both experimental research and theoretical analysis of ultimate strength for steel tubular tower joint are developed. The experimental data comprise four different specifications of steel tube, that is, without ribbed plate, with 1/4 annular ribbed plate, with 1/2 annular ribbed plate and with annular ribbed plate. This paper considers that the ultimate strength of steel tubular joint depend on the following four parameters, that is, the ratio of length of joint plate to outer diameter of steel tube B/D, outer diameter D, axial force and ratio of length of annular plate to outer diameter of steel tube R / D as well as the ratio of thickness of annular plate to thickness of steel tube. Furthermore, a recommended formula of the ultimate strength of steel tubular joint is derived by the potential energy principle and the principle of virtual work in elasticity and plasticity based on the failure modes of experimental specimens. It is demonstrated that the applicability of the recommended formula is better.

Abstract:
To study aerodynamic interference of twin-deck sections under vortex-induced vibration (VIV), a series of wind tunnel tests are implemented. Horizontal interval ratio (D/B) is taken into consideration a factor influencing VIV behavior, and the results are compared with single section. Surface pressure distribution of the twin sections are acquired by synchronous pressure measurements when the sections are under vertical and torsional VIV. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is employed to reconstruct the randomly fluctuating wind pressure field. It identifies the vertical and torsional vibration frequency of model and energy proportion of eigenmodes. VIV behavior of twin-deck sections is different from single section, and it changes with different D/B. In general, the position, where D/B=1, is unfavorable to VIV behavior of twin-deck sections. The aerodynamic interference does not always amplify or restrain the amplitude of VIV. Several lower modes can reconstruct fluctuating pressure field to the accuracy meeting the requirement of engineering.

Abstract:
SummaryAntibodies directed against ADAMTS13 have been detected in the majority of patients with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). We have previously localized a major antigenic determinant within the spacer domain of ADAMTS13. To identify the amino acid residues of the spacer domain that are involved in binding of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies, we constructed a series of fifteen hybrids (designated A-O) in which 5–10 amino acids of the spacer domain were exchanged for the corresponding region of ADAMTS1. Plasma from six patients with antibodies directed against the spacer domain was analyzed for reactivity with the ADAMTS13/ADAMTS1 chimeras. Exchange of amino acid residues 572–579 (hybrid C) and 657–666 (hybrid M) completely abolished the binding of antibodies from all six patients analyzed. Regions 580–587 (D), 602–620 (G, H), 629–638 (J), and 667–767 (N) contributed to binding of antibodies from patients 2, 4, and 5 (epitope present within regions CDGHJMN). Antibodies derived from patient 1 required region 602–620 (G, H) for binding (CGHM-epitope). For antibodies of patient 3, residues 564–571 (B), 580–587 (D), and 629–638 (J) were required (BCDJM-epitope), whereas replacement of residues 602–610 (G) and 629–638 (J) greatly diminished binding of antibodies from patient 6 (CGJM-epitope). Despite the presumably polyclonal origin of the antibodies present in plasma of patients, our results suggest that residues 572–579 (C) and 657–666 (M) comprise a common antigenic core region that is crucial for binding of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies. Other regions that spatially surround this antigenic core further modulate binding of antibodies to the spacer domain.

Abstract:
In electric-arc furnace dust zinc content can reach 43 %, lead content can reach 4 %. The content of ecotoxicants such as dioxins and furans (D&F) adsorbed on dust particles achieve 500 ng/kg of dust. Generally, zinc and lead are reduced from their oxides by dint of carbon (an average of 500 kg/t dust). The results of thermodynamic calculations and experimental studies have shown that these metals can be extracted from dust without the participation of carbon or at its low content (less than 3 %) [1]. Temperature of about 1400 K is required to extract lead, and about 2000 K is required for zinc extraction. The temperatures of their extraction depend on the dust composition, in particular, on the content of carbon, chlorine and the O/C ratio [2]. They can also depend on phase and dispersed composition of the dust. A physicochemical analysis of the dust formation processes in electric arc furnaces (EAF) has been carried out, the composition and properties of dust have been investigated, and experimental studies of the zinc and lead selective extraction process in laboratory conditions have been leaded. A dust processing technology has been developed and the possible innovative potential of the expected results has been assessed. The approaches we propose are based on the study of a continuous two-stage process of carbon-free and zinc and lead selective extraction from EAF dust of different composition. One of the main results of the work, along with the creation of a technology that ensures the selective zinc and lead extraction up to 99 %, is the development of a process for neutralizing EAF dust from D&F to an environmentally safe level.

638 Background: In-vitro studies have shown that cabozantinib has a strong inhibitory action on osteoclast differentiation and bone-resorption activity. The aim of this analysis was to investigate the effects of cabozantinib on bone turnover markers in patients (pts) with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Methods: We included mRCC pts treated with cabozantinib within the Italian Managed Access Program (MAP) at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan (Italy). Plasma samples from every patient were collected at baseline and after 3 and 6 months of treatment. The bone resorption markers C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTx) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5b (TRACP 5b), the osteoclastogenesis markers osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), vitamin D and parathormone (PTH) were measured by immunometric assay techniques. Data were analyzed using the RM One-Way ANOVA test with Greenhouse-Geisser correction followed by uncorrected Fisher’s LSD multiple comparison tests with individual variances computed for each comparison. Statistical tests were performed using the program GraphPad Prism (San Diego, CA). Results: Twenty-two pts have been treated with cabozantinib. Mature data were available for 11 pts. Analysis of TRACP 5b, OPG, RANKL and vitamin D did not show any significant variations during treatment with cabozantinib. CTx showed a significant reduction after 6 months of treatment (MV 171.5 pg/mL, STD 208.4) from baseline (mean value [MV] 352.2 pg/mL, standard deviation [STD] 210.1) (p = 0.0439) in the whole study population. PTH levels significantly increased after 3 months of treatment (MV 86.79 pg/mL, STD 34.99) from baseline (MV 30.77 pg/mL, STD 12.64) (p = 0.0003), while significantly decreased after 6 months (MV 75.01 pg/mL, STD 53.1) (p = 0.0174). Conclusions: Our data suggested that cabozantinib significantly reduced bone resorption as demonstrated by the decrease of CTx; it was also associated with an asymptomatic transient secondary increase of parathormone. This is the first clinical evidence on effects of cabozantinib on bone metabolism in a small population of mRCC pts.

Abstract:
Abstract Ubiquitination of lysine (K) residues in the cytoplasmic domain of cytokine receptors plays a major role in intracellular receptor routing and control of signal duration. However, which ubiquitin (E3) ligases and whether specific lysines, eg. present in conserved motifs, are involved in ubiquitin-mediated routing is still largely unknown. We recently showed that SOCS3, which forms an Elongin/Cullin-based E3 ligase (ECSSOCS3), is involved in ligand-induced ubiquitination, lysosomal routing and degradation of the G-CSFR (Irandoust et al, EMBO J. 2007, 26:1782–93). Strikingly, ECSSOCS3-mediated mechanisms largely depended on ubiquitination of a single juxtamembrane lysine at position 632 (K632), even though 4 additional conserved lysines are present in the cytoplasmic domain of the G-CSFR. This juxtamembrane lysine located 5 amino acids upstream of the box1 region is conserved among several other cytokine receptors. We sought to unravel the configuration required for ubiquitination of K632 and for its function in attenuation of G-CSF signaling. First, we tested whether K632 is part of a domain that can function as an isolated motif. To this end, we fused the K632-containing domain (D) encompassing the juxtamembrane and box1 regions to the COOH-terminus of a lysine-less G-CSFR (K5R-D). Despite efficient ubiquitination of the lysine within the reallocated domain, K5R-D, similar to K5R, was severely hampered in lysosomal routing. This resulted in prolonged STAT5 activation and in G-CSF-induced hyperproliferation of myeloid 32D cells indicating that the juxtamembrane domain of the G-CSFR does not function as an isolated domain that can be shifted to a different cytoplasmic location. To delineate how imperative the positioning of K632 is for its function, we inserted 5 alanines immediately upstream or downstream of K632. However, these insertions did not affect G-CSFR signal duration suggesting that there is no stringent proximity of K632 to the cell membrane and no strict positioning relative to the SOCS3 recuitment site (Y729) to direct downregulation of G-CSFR signaling. To further study this flexibility in positioning we ‘walked’ lysines through the juxtamembrane domain and the adjacent box 1-region by mutating amino acids at indicated positions to a lysine in an otherwise lysine-less G-CSFR. Mutants 628K and 630K were hardly ubiquitinated and, as predicted, were hampered in lysosomal routing. In contrast, lysines on position 631, 633, 634, 638 and 644 were ubiquitinated comparably to K632. Interestingly, while mutants 631K, 633K and 634K showed characteristics indistinguishable from 632K, mutants 638K and 644K displayed slightly decreased signal attenuation suggesting a gradual decline of functionality of lysines moved to box-1. Finally, moving the lysine downstream to position 672, which corresponds to the second lysine in the wt G-CSFR, resulted in complete loss of functionality. In conclusion, these results indicate that the positioning of a lysine within the juxtamembrane domain is crucial for ECSSOCS3-mediated signal downregulation and lysosomal routing of the G-CSFR, although a limited flexibility is tolerated towards the box1 region. The fact that inactive lysines are still ubiquitinated implies that interaction with effector proteins is involved in lysosomal routing rather than reduced or lost activity of E3 ligases. Given its high conservation among several cytokine receptors we are currently investigating a common role for the juxtamembrane lysine in cytokine receptor routing and signal attenuation.

Abstract:
The process of new fine grain formation was studied in compression of a Ni-20%Cr alloy at temperatures ranging from 500°C (0.46Tm) to 950°C (0.73 Tm) at a strain rate of 710-4 s-1. Two types of deformation behaviors with different features of microstructure evolution were observed, depending on processing conditions. The deformation behavior under flow stresses below about 500 MPa (relatively high temperatures) was typical for hot working associated with discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The extensive local migration (bulging) of both initial and deformation induced high angle boundaries (HAGBs) resulted in the development of nuclei, which grew out leading to the formation of recrystallized structure with grain size of D > 1 m. Numerous annealing twins were observed within these DRX grains. On the other hand, continuous DRX gave a major contribution to the formation of new grains at applied stresses above 500 MPa (relatively low temperatures). This fact was attributed to a low mobility of grain boundaries. The new grains with size of D < 1 m were evolved due to gradual transformation of deformation induced low angle boundaries (LAGBs) into HAGBs.

Abstract This study analyzes the development of the theme of the “Light of Muḥammad” (al-nūr al-Muḥammadī) or the “Muḥammadan Reality” (al-ḥaqīqa al-Muḥammadiyya) among several Shiʿi and Sufi thinkers through the seventh/thirteenth century. These thinkers include Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (d. 148/765), Sahl al-Tustarī (d. 283/896), the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ (early to mid 4th/10th century), the Ismaili dāʿīs Abū Yaʿqūb al-Sijistānī (d. after 361/971) and Ḥamīd al-Dīn al-Kirmānī (d. after 411/1020), Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111) and ʿAyn al-Quḍāt (d. 526/1131), Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240), ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Shahrastānī (d. 548/1153), and Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274). I argue that the “Light of Muḥammad” as a theological and metaphysical idea evolved historically through three distinct but cumulative phases of conceptualization: mytho-cosmological narrative, Neoplatonization, and ontological theophanization. Through these developments, the theological status of the Light of Muḥammad underwent a gradual but decisive shift from being reckoned as the first spiritual creation of God in the early period to being revered as the ontological self-manifestation of God in later periods.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The E. coli RelA protein is a ribosome-dependent (p)ppGpp synthetase that is activated in response to amino acid starvation. RelA can be dissected both functionally and physically into two domains: The N-terminal domain (NTD) (amino acids [aa] 1 to 455) contains the catalytic domain of RelA, and the C-terminal domain (CTD) (aa 455 to 744) is involved in regulating RelA activity. We used mutational analysis to localize sites important for RelA activity and control in these two domains. We inserted two separate mutations into the NTD, which resulted in mutated RelA proteins that were impaired in their ability to synthesize (p)ppGpp. When we caused the CTD inrelA + cells to be overexpressed, (p)ppGpp accumulation during amino acid starvation was negatively affected. Mutational analysis showed that Cys-612, Asp-637, and Cys-638, found in a conserved amino acid sequence (aa 612 to 638), are essential for this negative effect of the CTD. When mutations corresponding to these residues were inserted into the full-length relA gene, the mutated RelA proteins were impaired in their regulation. In attempting to clarify the mechanism through which the CTD regulates RelA activity, we found no evidence for competition for ribosomal binding between the normal RelA and the overexpressed CTD. Results from CyaA complementation experiments of the bacterial two-hybrid system fusion plasmids (G. Karimova, J. Pidoux, A. Ullmann, and D. Ladant, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 95:5752–5756, 1998) indicated that the CTD (aa 564 to 744) is involved in RelA-RelA interactions. Our findings support a model in which RelA activation is regulated by its oligomerization state.

Abstract:
Trypanosomosis is the most serious disease of cattle, which causes great socioeconomic losses in the country. Its socioeconomic impact is reflected on direct losses due to mortality, morbidity, and reduction in milk and meat production, abortion and stillbirth, and also costs associated with combat of the disease are direct losses. A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the prevalence of cattle trypanosomosis, and the apparent density and distribution of its fly vectors in selected study areas. The methods employed during the study were buffy coat technique for parasitological study and deploying trap for the collection of tsetse flies. A total of 1512 flies were trapped, and among them, 1162 were tsetse flies while 350 were biting flies. Higher apparent density for tsetse fly (7.7 F/T/D) followed by Stomoxys (0.9 F/T/D), Tabanus (0.8 F/T/D), and Hematopota (0.6 F/T/D) was recorded. Out of 638 examined cattle, the overall prevalence of trypanosomosis in the study area was 9.1% (58/638). Out of positive cases, Trypanosoma congolense (7.7%) was the dominant trypanosome species followed by Trypanosoma vivax (0.9%), Trypanosoma brucei (0.2%), and mixed infection of Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma vivax (0.3%). There was no a significant difference (p>0.05) in trypanosome infection between age, sex, and trypanosome species. The prevalence of trypanosomosis on the bases of body condition was 2.8% for poor, 5.5% for medium, and 0.8% for good body condition. The overall prevalence of anemia was (36.8%), and presence of anemia was higher in trypanosome positive animals (62.5%) than in negative animals (34.3%) which is statistically significant (p<0.05, CI = 1.794–5.471). The overall mean packed cell volume (PCV) value for examined animals was 25.84 ± 0.252SE. Mean (PCV) of parasitaemic cattle (9.1%) was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of aparasitaemic cattle (90%). This survey showed that trypanosomosis is still a core problem for livestock production of the study area. Therefore, more attention should be given to the control of both the disease and its vectors.

Understanding large-scale circulations (LSCs) in turbulent convective systems is important for the study of stars, planets, and in many industrial applications. The canonical model of the LSC is quasi-planar with additional horizontal sloshing and torsional modes [Brown E, Ahlers G (2009) J Fluid Mech 638:383–400; Funfschilling D, Ahlers G (2004) Phys Rev Lett 92:194502; Xi HD et al. (2009) Phys Rev Lett 102:044503; Zhou Q et al. (2009) J Fluid Mech 630:367–390]. Using liquid gallium as the working fluid, we show, via coupled laboratory-numerical experiments in tanks with aspect ratios greater than unity (Γ∈{2, 2}), that the LSC takes instead the form of a “jump rope vortex,” a strongly 3D mode that periodically orbits around the tank following a motion much like a jump rope on a playground. Further experiments show that this jump rope flow also exists in more viscous fluids such as water, albeit with a far smaller signal. Thus, this jump rope mode is an essential component of the turbulent convection that underlies our observations of natural systems.

Combining with a practical engineering, the stability of semi-circular guiding dike before and after foundation reinforcement is analyzed. The results showed that the foundation bearing capacity decreases obviously when cyclic weakening effect of soft foundation was considered, so cyclic weakening effect of soft foundation under cyclic wave load should be considered in practical design. Abstract:
Abstract From the origins of Islamic history, humility (khushūʿ/tawāḍuʿ) has occupied a central place in Muslim piety. This has been in large part due to its defining role in the Qurʾān and ḥadīths, and no less because it stands as the opposite of pride (kibr)—the cardinal sin of both Iblīs and Pharaoh in Scripture. By drawing on the literature of Sufism or taṣawwuf from its formative period to the 20th century—spanning the writings of such figures as al-Makkī (d. 386/996), al-Qushayrī (d. 465/1072), Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240), Rūmī (d. 672/1273), al-Shaʿrānī (d. 973/1565), al-Darqāwī (d. 1239/1823), and al-Sharnūbī (d. 1348/1929)—the article examines the defining characteristics of this virtue, its marks or signs, and the dangers that lie in its embodiment. In the process, we shall see how humility occupies a place somewhere in between pride, conceit, and self-admiration, on the one hand, and self-loathing, self-denigration, and outright self-hatred, on the other. Although humility is, in theory, to be exercised towards both God and other human beings, the precise nature of its embodiment, as we might expect, varies in relation to both. The article ends with an epilogue on what it means to transcend humility altogether.

Abstract Inhibitory antibodies against ADAMTS13 have been detected in the majority of patients with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Epitope-mapping studies revealed that antibodies binding to the cysteine-rich/spacer domains of ADAMTS13 are present in plasma of all patients analyzed so far. We have previously shown that a major antigenic determinant located within the spacer domain. To confirm these results we constructed a recombinant fragment consisting of the disintegrin/TSR1/cysteine-rich domains of ADAMTS13 and the spacer domain of ADAMTS1. The resulting ADAMTS13/ADAMTS1 chimera did not react with IgG present in plasma of a panel of patients with acquired TTP. To identify the amino acid residues that are involved in binding of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies, we constructed a series of 15 hybrids (designated A–O) in which 5–10 amino acids of the ADAMTS13 spacer were exchanged for the homologous sequence of ADAMTS1. Plasma from 6 patients with antibodies directed against the spacer domain was analyzed for reactivity with the ADAMTS13/ADAMTS1 chimeras. Exchange of residues 572–579 (hybrid C) and 657–666 (hybrid M) of ADAMTS13 for the corresponding sequence of ADAMTS1 completely abolished the binding of antibodies from all 6 patients. Other regions of the ADAMTS13 spacer were also involved in binding of antibodies from patient plasma. Regions 580–587 (D), 602–620 (G,H), 629–638 (J), and 667–767 (N) of the ADAMTS13 spacer domain contributed to binding of antibodies from patients 2, 4, and 5 (epitope present within regions CDGHJMN). IgG derived from patient 1 required region 602–620 (G,H) for binding to the ADAMTS13 spacer (CGHM-epitope). For antibodies of patient 3, residues 564–571 (B), 580–587 (D), and 629–638 (J) were required (BCDJM-epitope), whereas replacement of residues 602–610 (G) and 629–638 (J) greatly diminished binding of antibodies derived from patient 6 (CGJM-epitope). Despite the presumably polyclonal origin of the antibodies present in plasma of the patients, our results suggest that residues 572–579 (C) and 657–666 (M) comprise a common antigenic core region within the spacer domain that is crucial for binding of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies in all six patients. Amino acid residues derived from other regions that spatially surround this common antigenic core further modulate binding of antibodies to the spacer domain.

Abstract:
The behaviour of pile-groups subjected to lateral soil pressure is a key consideration in establishing the design parameters of pile-groups. In this paper, one representative section of the Chongqing Jiangdong slope is taken as an example. The existence of an arching zone around pile groups for granular and fine-grained soils is first examined using the finite element computer code CORE-3D. Pile load-displacement curves and the arching effect are considered together to explain how the stresses are transferred from the soil to the piles. The key parameters controlling the soil arching effect are centre-to-centre pile spacing (S), thickness of stable soil mass (H), depth (L) of pile embedment, pile diameter (D) and these were studied extensively. An empirical equation summarising the results is presented and the results have been adopted by the designer in practice.

Abstract:
This study reports the effect of coating Silane Coupling Agent (SCA) on composite surfaces. Composites made from composite particulate kenaf fiber and empty oil palm bunches passing 50 mesh sieves using epoxy resin. The particle board compacting process was carried out using a Hydrolic Press compacting machine with a pressure of 20 Bars, holding time 10 minutes in the initial stages, and continued using a Hot Press compacting machine with a pressure of 20 Bars, temperature 150 oC, holding time 15 minutes. The process of treating the Silane Coupling Agent solution on the composite surface is done manually layered on the composite surface. Composites tensile strength were tested referring to ASTM D 638-14, impact strenght tested referring ASTM D 256-04, and Water Absorption using ASTM D 570. Surface examination was made with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The Silane Coupling Agent (SCA) coating has succeeded in increasing the bond between kenaf fibers, empty oil palm bunches and epoxy be effective and in accordance with increasing tensile strength, impact strength and water absorption.

Abstract:
Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in the US population and is associated with numerous diseases, including those characterised by inflammatory processes. We aimed to investigate the link between vitamin D status and anaemia, hypothesising that lower vitamin D status would be associated with increased odds of anaemia, particularly anaemia with inflammation. A secondary aim was to examine the effects of race in the association between vitamin D status and anaemia. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in a cohort of generally healthy adults in Atlanta, GA (n 638). Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between vitamin D status and anaemia. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) < 50 nmol/l (compared to 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/l) was associated with anaemia in bivariate analysis (OR 2·64, 95 % CI 1·43, 4·86). There was significant effect modification by race (P= 0·003), such that blacks with 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/l had increased odds of anaemia (OR 6·42, 95 % CI 1·88, 21·99), v. blacks with 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/l, controlling for potential confounders; this association was not apparent in whites. When categorised by subtype of anaemia, blacks with 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/l had significantly increased odds of anaemia with inflammation than blacks with serum 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/l (OR 8·42, 95 % CI 1·96, 36·23); there was no association with anaemia without inflammation. In conclusion, serum 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/l was significantly associated with anaemia, particularly anaemia with inflammation, among blacks in a generally healthy adult US cohort.

Abstract:
AbstractScholarly discussion of theabdāl(substitutes) has been limited to their appearance as the members of a saintly hierarchy first alluded to by al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī (d. 295/905–300/910) and systematized by Ibn ʿArabī (d. 638/1240). However, unlike the other members of this hierarchy, theabdālare also known through the hadith, one of which is attributed to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. This article explores this hitherto unstudied hadith material arguing that the concept originated in hadith circles with a specific purported context, the showdown between the Syrians and Iraqis at the Battle of Ṣiffīn (37/657). A gradual loss of this context went hand-in-hand with the emergence of the mystical saintlyabdāl. As monistic Sufism penetrated all elements of Mamluk society, the boundary between theabdālof the traditionists and of the mystics became porous. This paper concludes with an examination of the ensuing debate on the authenticity of the concept.

Abstract:
While Ibn ʿArabī (d. 638/1240) continues to receive much attention within the academe as a preeminent Sufi philosopher, his jurisprudence, by contrast, rarely elicits the same attention, despite the prominent mention of the Sharīʿa throughout his many works. This paper provides an exhaustive overview of his sophisticated legal doctrine in terms of his legal methodology and substantive law. An analysis of his legal epistemology would situate him within the ‘scripturalist’ stream of legal theorists, commonly associated with the Zāhiri school. However, while Ibn Ḥazm (d. 456/1064) certainly influenced Ibn ʿArabī’s legal doctrine, the Shaykh’s jurisprudence remains markedly original in that it is ultimately rooted in an overarching metaphysical doctrine. This is evident in his personal reframing of ijtihād as a personal process of spiritual refinement, as opposed to a methodical process of ratiocination, which leads him to develop a distinctively personalist theory of legal pluralism that transcends the limitations of school conformity.
