Abstract:

AbstractLet $a, b, c$ be relatively prime positive integers such that ${a}^{2} + {b}^{2} = {c}^{2} $. In 1956, Jeśmanowicz conjectured that for any positive integer $n$, the only solution of $\mathop{(an)}\nolimits ^{x} + \mathop{(bn)}\nolimits ^{y} = \mathop{(cn)}\nolimits ^{z} $ in positive integers is $(x, y, z)= (2, 2, 2)$. In this paper, we consider Jeśmanowicz’ conjecture for Pythagorean triples $(a, b, c)$ if $a= c- 2$ and $c$ is a Fermat prime. For example, we show that Jeśmanowicz’ conjecture is true for $(a, b, c)= (3, 4, 5)$, $(15, 8, 17)$, $(255, 32, 257)$, $(65535, 512, 65537)$.

Abstract:
Globular clusters in the Galactic bulge form a flattened system, extending from the Galactic center to about 4.5 kpc from the Sun (Barbuy et al. 1997). A study of abundance ratios in these clusters is very important for a more complete understanding of the bulge formation. In this work we present a spectroscopic analysis of individual stars in NGC 6553. This cluster is a key one because it is located at d⊙ ≍ 5.1 kpc, therefore relatively close to us, and at the same time it is representative of the Galactic bulge stellar population: (a) Ortolani et al. (1995) showed that NGC 6553 and NGC 6528 show very similar Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs), and NGC 6528 is located at d⊙ ≍ 7.83 kpc, very close to the Galactic center; (b) the stellar populations of the Baade Window is also very similar to that of NGC 6553 and NGC 6528 as Ortolani et al. (1995) have shown by comparing their luminosity functions.

Abstract:
We have investigated the V, B – V “clump” morphology of the globular cluster NGC 6553 (Ortolani et al. 1990, OBB90) through synthetic horizontal branch (SHB) models. Catelan's (1993) computations were extended to more metal-rich compositions, following Sweigart (1987) and Castellani et al. (1991), and transposed to the observational plane on the basis of VandenBerg's (1992) colour transformations and bolometric corrections. Observational scatter has also been added. In general, the SHB models are very clumpy, unlike the observed feature, which seems extended and peculiarly tilted. However, for particular combinations of helium abundance, metallicity, and mean mass on the HB, tilted models result, being however significantly less sloped and wider than observed. The NGC 6553 field is differentially reddened by ΔE(B – V) ≈ 0.06 (OBB90), which has been modelled, but which implies a CMD scatter which is smaller than the one originating from evolution away from the zero-age HB alone. We have also investigated the age of the cluster (ΔV method) and location of the red giant branch “bump,” in comparison with 47 Tuc. Since the helium and α-elements abundances are not known for NGC 6553, three chemical evolution scenarios have been considered, following the method of de Freitas Pacheco (1993). Details can be found elsewhere (Catelan et al. 1994).

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Globular clusters are among the oldest objects in the Galaxy, thus their researchers are key to understanding the processes of evolution and formation that the galaxy has experienced in early stages. Spectroscopic studies allow us to carry out detailed analysis on the chemical composition of globular clusters. The aim of our research is to perform a detailed analysis of chemical abundances to a sample of stars of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6553, in order to determine chemical patterns that allow us to appreciate the phenomenon of Multiple Population in one of the most metal-rich Globular Clusters in the Galaxy. This analysis is being carried out with data obtained by FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectrograph, VVV survey and DR2 of Gaia mission. We analysed 20 red horizontal branch stars, being the first extensive spectroscopic abundance analysis for this cluster and measured 8 chemical elements (O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Ni), deriving a mean iron content of [Fe/H] = −0.10 ± 0.01 and a mean of [α/Fe] = 0.21 ± 0.02, considering Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti (errors on the mean). We found a significant spread in the content of Na but a small or negligible in O. We did not find an intrinsic variation in the content of α and iron-peak elements, showing a good agreement with the trend of the bulge field stars, suggesting a similar origin and evolution.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In this article, we present a detailed chemical analysis of seven red giant members of NGC 6553 using high-resolution spectroscopy from VLT FLAMES. We obtained the stellar parameters (Teff, Log(g), vt, [Fe/H]) of these stars from the spectra, and we measured the chemical abundance for 20 elements, including light elements, iron-peak elements, α-elements, and neutron-capture elements. The metallicities in our sample stars are consistent with a homogeneous distribution. We found a mean of [Fe/H] = −0.14 ± 0.07 dex, in agreement with other studies. Using the α-elements Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti, we obtain the mean of [α/Fe] = 0.11 ± 0.05. We found a vertical relation between Na and O, characterized by a significant spread in Na and an almost non-existent spread in O. In fact, Na and Al are the only two light elements with a large intrinsic spread, which demonstrates the presence of multiple populations (MPs). An intrinsic spread in Mg is not detected in this study. The α, iron-peak, and neutron-capture elements show good agreement with the trend of the bulge field stars, indicating similar origin and evolution, in concordance with our previous studies for two other bulge globular clusters (NGC 6440 and NGC 6528).

Current medical imaging systems provide excellent spatial resolution, high tissue contrast, and up to 65535 intensity levels. Thus, image processing techniques which aim to exploit the information contained in the images are necessary for using these images in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. Image segmentation may be defined as the process of parcelling the image to delimit different neuroanatomical tissues present on the brain. In this paper we propose a segmentation technique using 3D statistical features extracted from the volume image. In addition, the presented method is based on unsupervised vector quantization and fuzzy clustering techniques and does not use any a priori information. The resulting fuzzy segmentation method addresses the problem of partial volume effect (PVE) and has been assessed using real brain images from the Internet Brain Image Repository (IBSR).

We present deep luminosity functions derived from HST STIS data for three rich LMC clusters (NGC 1805, NGC 1868, and NGC 2209), and for one Galactic globular cluster (NGC 6553). All of the LMC cluster luminosity functions are roughly consistent with a Salpeter IMF or with the solar neighbourhood IMF from Kroupa, Tout & Gilmore (1993). They continue to rise at least to 0.7M⊙. NGC 1868 shows evidence for mass segregation which may be primordial. A comparison of deep luminsoisty functions for seven Galactic globulars shows that the luminosity functions are eroded at low masses by amounts that are strongly correlated with distance from the Galactic plane.

Echo data generated by Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has the characteristics of high data rate and huge data quantity. However, the complex Chirp Scaling (CS) algorithm in SAR processing leads to excessive calculations. To solve this problem, this paper presents an implementation on a parallel structure real-time image processing board, which adopts principal-subordinate parallel processing structures. The principal FPGA board is responsible for the control of the entire image processing, data collection, distribution and interaction. Each subordinate FPGA, as an independent processing unit, is able to independently finish the FFT transformation and phase factor compensation. The performance of the high-performance parallel FFT processors is 4 times as efficient as that of a single butterfly processor. The phase factor generation and compensation is optimized through two steps, one is fast algorithm in phase factor generation and compensation; the other is the optimization among the processing procedures,The proposed architecture can process an image in size16384 × 65536 at 100MHZ operation frequency within 12.5s.

Abstract:
AbstractEarly English readers of Michel de Montaigne (1533–92) annotated their copies of John Florio's (1553[?]–1625) translation with remarkable frequency and vehemence, creating a context within which printed appropriations of the essayist may be fruitfully examined. No topic intrigued these readers more than custom. Drawing from transcriptions of over 4,000 marginal annotations and situating the Montaignean borrowings of William Shakespeare (1564–1616), Sir Francis Bacon (1561–1626), and other English writers within a culture of active reader response, this essay treats the Montaignean account of custom as a case study wherein differences between manuscript and print appropriation may be investigated. Montaigne's reception in seventeenth-century England cannot be understood without scrupulous attention to both traditions.
