Indole degradation in a model system and in poultry manure was studied using an enrichment culture of two Acinetobacter species; Acinetobacter toweneri NTA1-2A and Acinetobacter guillouiae TAT1-6A. Degradation of indole was quantified using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The two strains were capable of degrading initial concentrations of indole ranging from 58.58–300 mg/L. The degradation efficiency was 66.36% (NTA1-2A), 94.87% (TAT1-6A), and 96.00% (mix) in 6 days when the initial concentration <300 mg/L. The strains were tested for enzymatic activity using 12

ABSTRACT Strategies to limit complement deposition on Streptococcus pneumoniae are established as virulence features for invasive disease, but their role in respiratory tract infection requires further analysis. We evaluated complement C3 protein deposition on discordant S. pneumoniae isolates of the same serotype (6A) and their capacity to cause nasopharyngeal (NP) colonization and experimental otitis media (EOM) in an animal model. We compared C3 binding to five 6A isolates from asymptomatic NP carriers with five 6A strains that caused invasive disease, and we observed less C3 (∼10-fold less

Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) is a T lymphotropic herpesvirus belonging to theBetaherpesvirinaesubfamily. HHV-6 was long classified into variants A and B (HHV-6A and HHV-6B); however, recently, HHV-6A and HHV-6B were reclassified as different species. The process of herpesvirus entry into target cells is complicated, and in the case of HHV-6A and HHV-6B, the detailed mechanism remains to be elucidated, although both viruses are known to enter cells via endocytosis. In this paper, (1) findings about the cellular receptor and its ligand for HHV-6A and HHV-6B are summarized, and (2) a schematic mod

The use of cisplatin is severely limited by its toxic side-effects, which has spurred chemists to employ different strategies in the development of new metal-based anticancer agents. Compounds 6a and 6c exhibited better in vitro antiproliferative activity against seven tumor cell lines than cisplatin, they displayed no evident resistance in the cisplatin-resistant cell line A549/DPP. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system with higher prevalence in elderly people. Despite numerous research studies, the etiopathogenesis of AD remains unclear. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases involved in the cleavage of extracellular matrix proteins and basement membrane compounds. In the brain, the pathological role of MMPs includes the disruption of the blood-brain barrier leading to the induction of neuroinflammation. Among various MMPs, MMP-2 and MMP-3 belong to candidate molecules related to AD pathology. In our st

Abstract For observations of vertical-component acceleration in the normal-mode band (0.3–10 mHz), the detection sensitivity for signals from the Earth’s body can be improved to levels below the Peterson low-noise model (PLNM). This is achieved by deterministic procedures that (at least partly) remove the accelerations originating from atmospheric mass fluctuations. The physical models used in such corrections are still too simple and fail at frequencies above 3 mHz. Anticipating improved atmospheric correction procedures, we explore the prospects of lowering the detection level. From recordin

Human herpesvirus 6A (HHV-6A) has yet to be definitively linked to a specific disease. This is due in part to the ubiquitous nature of the virus. Humanized Rag2-/-γc-/- (Rag-hu) mice were tested to determine if these were a suitable animal model to study the virus. Both cell-free and cell-associated virus was used for infection and both were found to be efficient at infecting the mice. Viral DNA was found in the plasma and cellular blood fractions, bone marrow, lymph node, and thymus, indicating successful infection and propagation of the virus in vivo.

Bolted connections are largely employed in various types of engineering structures to transfer loads from one member to another. In particular, the off-shore industry has made extensive use of these connections, predominantly at the sub-sea level. In spite of their advantages, bolted joints are critical regions and may become sources of structural weakness due to large stress concentrations. Under severe operating conditions, micro-cracks can develop in the bolt, creating regions of elevated stress which may significantly reduce the integrity of the connection and ultimately lead to failure. Decreased ACE activity is a common finding in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and in animal models of lung injury. The nature of this effect is unknown. Fibrin, also a common finding in lung injury, is degraded to small peptides by proteolytic enzymes. Peptide 6A, corresponding to amino acid residues 43-47 of the BB-chain of fibrin (cgen), is produced by plasmin degradation of fibrin and has been shown to inhibit ACE in vitro.
