Valle, Cordero Alejandro Javier del. "Primitivismo en el Arte de Ana Mendieta." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/387127.
Full textThe career of Ana Mendieta is part of the aesthetic movements of the late twentieth century. Primitivism in art is one of them. This research examines in depth how her primitivism was, from the formal analysis of some of her artworks directly influenced by African art, to developing a theoretical rationale of the ritual performance that extends primitivism as an artistic resource beyond the aesthetic scope. The historical context behind the academic training of Ana Mendieta and the time she spent in New York are the keys that provide a glimpse into her hitherto unpublished works. The application of a comparative methodology has allowed to establish connections amongst art, anthropology, archeology, colonial history of Spain, the history of religion and feminism

"Bioarte. Una estética de la desorganización." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/129126.
Full textBioart. An Aesthetic of disruption focuses on how the relationship between biotechnology and artistic practises has raised unprecedented questions about body, life, about the relationship between art, science, society, ethics, aesthetics, economy and politics. The use of biotechnology and semi-living entities as an essential part of artistic research allows us to ask which has been the evolution of Life concept from a philosophical perspective. These projects show us the necessity of a re-evaluation of standard taxonomies, and can also enable new discourses on the different relationships we establish with these "new entities", about humankind and the relationship between humans and non-humans animals. This kind of artistic works can become a set of focal points from which to analyse possible ethical questions about the use of biological material for artistic purpose, or the role of philosophy in artistic research. This PhD dissertation connects some bioartistic practises with some philosophical concepts and issues, as the ethical claims of using biological material for artistic purposes, the ethical claims of using non-humans animals as a part of the artworks, the role of art in research, the role of contemporary philosophy in artistic research, and tries to show how technological innovation and science research are becoming key to contemporary aesthetics. An aesthetic of disruption proposes to take the potential of these artistic practises to disrupt the body, disrupting the codes, narratives and taxonomies. It involves the composition of a fractal landscape, a collage that allows us a new construction from the estrangement, new questions about the body, life, ethics and politics. A disruption that allows to re-think-us in an extended-plane, an aesthetic that allows us to escape from an unifying and hierarchic organisation.
Full textThis PhD thesis studies the relationship between Joan Brossa and the visual arts. The work explores diverse fields and topics. In this way, the first chapter is devoted to the analysis of the author’s visual poetry; the second focusses specifically on the apparent differentiated evolution of his work and its linking with the work of other artists of his circle; the third investigates the turning point attributed to his work after the publication of Em va fer Joan Brossa in 1951; the fourth analyses Brossa’s taste for oneiric and everyday elements, his structuring of reality through photography, as well as the adoption of other arts’ techniques such as collage and film editing in his poetic production; the fifth deals with the author’s work with movement in his experimental plays and the sixth one studies the phenomenon of reification in Brossa’s poetry through his so called “object poems”. In the final conclusive chapter it is argued to what extent Brossa’s relationship with the visual arts determined the final result of his work and clearly conditions both the perception of and the theorising about the poet.
Full textThis dissertation studies Saint Anthony’s text, cult and iconography in Catalonia in the XIVth and XVth, although these geographical and chronological limitations are broken when necessary. This subject has been studied more in general or giving attention to other countries, but not to Catalonia. This is what this dissertation pretends to do, but with a different approach from what other studies did, focusing on images and their iconography but on text and devotion as well. Even if this is an Art History dissertation, the interdisciplanary approach was needed: studying the iconography implied analyzing the texts as well, in which historiography had paid less attention than the one it deserves. This allowed us to reach to general conclusions but also to other related to more concrete aspects, wheter about text, cult or iconography. After the first chapter dedicated to the heremitism, its presence in medieval literatura and the cult to hermitic saints –which contextualizes the saint and his cult- this dissertation studies saint’s text, devotion and iconography. Then, a catalogue compiles all the information related to the pieces and, at the end, we find the conclusions. The study of the texts starts with the ones written soon after saint’s death and their spreading in Catalonia. This lead me to analize some hagiographical compendiums, among them different Catalan Golden Legend manuscripts, which made me think about some hypothesis and statements historiography had defended. Then, we focus on the other text written during Middle Ages, which made saint Anthony’s hagiography richer, and on how they were well-known in Catalonia. Besides, some hagiographical news gathered in other codices are included. With all, the vivacy of the saint’s hagiography is clear. As far as the cult to the saint is concerned, the role that the order of Saint Anthony played in promoting it is studied here. Furthermore, the importance of the saint’s protection on the animals for the devotion is analized as well. This protection is justified by the text, the importance of the pig for the order and for the situation of the saint’s festivity during the Winter season. Then, I wonder about the saint’s speciallity of saving ships about to shipwreck. Finally, the wideness of the cult and its visual traduction is shown. The following chapter is dedicated to study saint Anthony’s iconography as well as the episodes represented in Catalan art, from those that are more famous to the ones that only appear few times. In Catalonia, studying these images is so difficult because of the lost of many relevant information, which does not happen in other countries. Besides, some of the greatest cycles are lost, too. Anyway, the known information about the different pieces is compilled in the catalogue, which also includes some images and copied documents, in case they are important. At the end, the conclusions gather the contributions of this dissertation, showing, on the one hand, how some aspects have been solved and, on the other hand, how others are still open. Some possible ways of future research have been indicated as well.
Vega, Suriaga Edgar. "Eduardo Solá Franco, Wilson Paccha, Transtango: estrategias de las masculinidades en Ecuador." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/134831.
Full textThis, the doctoral thesis entitled "Eduardo Solà Franco, Wilson Paccha, Transtango: Strategies of Masculinities in Ecuador" poses the difficulties, possibilities and limits of the representation of masculinities in the plastic arts and contemporary art in Ecuador. To this end, the first chapter puts forward an analysis of contemporary masculinities resulting from the emergence of the modern nineteenth century masculine subject. In this analysis it is proposed that in that century a hegemonic and dominant masculinity emerged as a result of the scientificist revision of the mythic/religious treatises which dominated and gave sense to what we know as the West. In this chapter is an examination of the convergence, in this masculinity, of the technologies of vision, the contrivancies of social classification, and the medical and psychological discourses which legitimise the negation of the body, of the body of the woman, of the feminine, of feminised bodies, and of homosexuality. In this wide referencial framework, this chapter contextualises the regime of masculine vision and the politics of artistic representation of masculinity in Ecuador throughout the twentieth century. In the second chapter, the investigation gives an account of how the work of the Ecuadorian-Catalan Eduardo Solà Franco (Guayaquil, 1915 - Santiago de Chile, 1996) propounds an irreverent esthetic strategy with respect to the representation of masculity and the body in the local context of the moment. In this chapter is a revision of how this artist's work contravenes the "ought to be" of the esthetic currents of the first half of the twentieth century, so dominated by Indigenism. In contrast, this work presents a theatricised homoerotic masculinity which contradicts not only the ideal of corporality called for in esthetic representations in the above-mentioned context, but also the same configuration of masculinity as a sealed, solid and dominant ideal. This chapter further proposes that this homoerotic masculinity is a great subterfuge operating in reverse of heteronormal practices in which the author inscribed his homosexuality. The third chapter presents the work of Wilson Paccha (born Quito, 1972) as the expression of an extreme and strident theatralisation of masculinity in Ecuador. In that way, this chapter examines how parody, histrionics, chromatic stridence and excess dominate the representation of certain masculine figures which bear the post-colonial footprint. Precisely, it emphasises that the action of this artist from Quito questions the preoccupation for ethno-racial identity as a canonic and prevalent position in the esthetic representations of Ecuador throughout the twentieth century. Starting from this questioning, the masculine subject which the work of Wilson Paccha puts forward is shown to be sceptical and burlesque facing identical discussions which not only dominate the Andean state, but also give substance to the imaginary of the national state. As a result of this esthetic/political posture, this chapter gives an account of how the work of Wilson Paccha evolves into a criticism of hegemonic and dominant masculinity which is furthermore white/european, heterosexist, racist and sexist. By way of appendix, this investigation analyses a contemporary artistic expression which records the current esthetic and political criticism of the mechanisms of opression of the body in contemporary Ecuador. The appendix puts forward the implications of the performance Transtango, in the context of the activism of the sexual diversities of the Andean state, and as a gesture of the widening insipient debate of the relationship between gender and art in the artistic scene of Ecuador.
Full textThis research addresses for the first time psychobiography of Hans Christian Andersen, from his graphic work. The methodology is also unpublished in this type of study: panofskyano contextual analysis and psychoanalytic hermeneutical. The results have thrown us through the meaning given to the six categories elaborated ad hoc: Oedipus complex, Eros, Thanatos, Repression, Sublimation and Fantasy, that our author had a sel-centered personality and egotistical and cyclothymic affectivity. It has been concluded that there is in hi an obsessive omnipresence of death, loving frustration, and “fearful servility” as a mediator between his traumatic reality and his artistic work. All his work is an eminent “return of the repressed” with a “repeated use of the anthropomorphization”.There is a preamble of surrealism. It appears the catatimia of keepsake and the fantastic pseudologia as elements that allow Andersen “fabulate” and counterbalance the inferiority complex which experiences i their social relations.
Sacarès, Taberner Miquela. "Vivat Ars Lul·liana. Ramon Llull i la seva iconografia." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/284949.
Full textThe thesis is an iconographic study about the Majorcan philosopher, Raymond Lully. In first instance the codification and evolution of the iconographic origins of Raymond Lully are closely studied; commencing with the first set of manuscripts dating from the XIV- XV until the XIX Century. Different iconographic models are established by way of studying the different processes and techniques, such as miniatures, reliefs, paintings and sculpture. After which the close study of the iconographic narrative in all various stages of the life of Raymond Lully is observed, following the footsteps of "Vita Coaetanea" (Daily Life), the very first biography of Lully, as well as later biographies. The starting point of this study are the famous miniatures of Karlsruhe- the first plastic manifestation which treats the most important epoch in the life of Raymond Lully. Apart from the narrative aspect of Lully, another section is dedicated to the Majorcan Beatification and Majorcan Belief in general. St. Praxedes, St. Catherine Thomas, St. Alonso Rodriguez or the venerable Anne Marie of the Holy Sacrament are some of the Saints that accompany the wise Majorcan on his journey. Another relevant section deals with the various religious Orders. The Franciscan Order of St. Francis of Assisi as their leader start the repertoire of images of Franciscan Saints with Raymond Lully. The theme of the defense of the Immaculate Conception is headed by the triad of the Franciscans Duns Escotto, St. Bonaventure and the same Lully. The Dominican Order with the interview of St. Raymond of Peñafort and the wise Majorcan, or the theme of the controversies and the attacks towards the images of Lully are most significant representations. The company of Jesus is also one of the religious Orders that is involved in the Lullian representations. Father Jeffrey Nadal and Father Andreas Moragues were great pillars in the funding of Lullian works. The following section deals with the great iconographic programmes which have been dedicated to the wise Majorcan. In first instance the sepulchre of the XV Century situated in the Chapel of the Purity of Maria in the Convent of St. Francis of Palma of Majorca is studied, in second instance the altarpiece of St. Holy Trinity, work from the beginning of the XVI Century, and thirdly the altarpiece of the so-called “New Chapel of the Beatified Raymond Lully”, created at the beginning of the XVII Century, in fourth and last instance the scenes of the life of Raymond Lully are analized in the paintings of the 600's Michael Bestard. The edition of the thesis is completed by a documentation appendix in which all documentation that could be found in relation to the artistic works has been added. Contracts of altarpieces and paintings, notary accounts as well as declarations about artistic pieces by Lully are the content of this documentation. The catalogue is another of the important pieces of the thesis. The catalogisation and order of representations of the Beatified Raymond Lully has been one of the main concerns in this study. The criteria for the afore-mentioned catalogisation has been based on two elementary keys: the theme or the content of the representation and the chronology. The object of this study is to offer a diachronic vision of the different iconographic models that have been created via the help of literary sources, above all biographies of Lully and other writs, apart from other graphic sources like the copies of the reliefs and other plastic repertoires with their according changes, transmissions and remains that have evolved throughout the course of time.
Alberú, Gómez María del Carmen. "RELACIÓN DE MICHOACÁN Y CÓDICE FLORENTINO: LA HUELLA MEDIEVAL EN DOS CÓDICES DEL SIGLO XVI." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/96171.
Full textThis study establishes that while the discovery, conquest and colonization of México occurred in from 1492 onward (i.e., modern historical times), the sixteenth-century Spanish legacy there, was in fact medieval. I reach this conclusion through the analysis of images contained in the Relación de Michoacán (1541) and the Florentine Codex (1579). This supports the view that considers this decisive event as a medieval extension of the Spanish understanding of the world, as different to the logical approach of modern renaissance times. The friars responsible of the manuscripts elaboration Jerónimo de Alcalá and Bernardino de Sahagún declared that their projects main purpose was the knowledge of both Purépecha and Mexica pre Hispanic cultures based on the indians’ declarations, their memories of the events before and during the conquest and their involvement in the writing of the manuscripts. In doing so the friars would also be able to detect and eradicate idolatry in order to effectively establish Christianity. Nevertheless images interpretation in both manuscripts shows the supremacy of medieval mentality upon indigenous world view so that these books reflect the profound and quick acculturation lived in México as much as the lost vanquished cultures. The ideas are developed in four chapters. Chapter I summarizes medieval cultural signs that are to be found in both manuscripts as is the privilege of memory over observation: the truth is so as long as it exists in the memory not as a result of empirical verification. Chapter two deals with the description of the studied manuscripts in terms of their medieval codices strong similarities in structure and characteristics, specifically with Franciscan tradition manuscript making. Next chapter is a review of five iconographic analysis of these codices illustrations. The specialists approached their analysis from different methodologies useful to contrast the present thesis results. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the inquiry of an image selection that explains the end of both studied cultures, interestingly enough, through the assimilation of the new imposed paradigms: forms, significance and values of medieval image making. Key words: social history of art, colonial codices, medieval codices, medieval art, iconography, iconology.
Pol, Rigau Marta. "Anàlisi de l’obra plàsticovisual i poèticotextual de Fina Miralles: L’arbre com a reflex de la seva cosmologia." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/107944.
Full textThe present article examines how Fina Miralles’ thought fluctuated from the analytical, neo-positivist current of her first conceptual stage (1972-1975) to her later poetic, textual work linked to spiritual holism (1981-1996), without taking into account her post-conceptual stage (1976-1978) or her concept pictures (1979-1983). Fina Miralles’ works show how the chain of ideas (at times latent and other times more manifest) present in her visual and poetic-textual work process is part of a whole body of work, generated not in a linear manner but as the result of multiple interactions between both, throughout her artistic, literary and philosophical life experience. This study contributes a new insight into the nature of Fina Miralles’ works. It shows how her artistic approach was based on her capacity to relate and interact, and to transpose the essence of her materials, ideas, experiences, and poetic thought (expressed in images and words), to completely unexpected and even imaginary spheres, in order to endow them with a new ontological reality, as captured in the cosmological figure of the tree.

Full textThe study of cultural heritage materials gives us information on the aesthetic and artistic trends. But it also gives us a very useful on the history, society and technology which created the art object, often providing new data and even those had to rectifying certain. In addition, once processed, the materials of which are composed art objects initiate processes of change in contact with the environment around them, "the time also paints." All materials evolve and transform over time. The analysis and subsequent interpretation of the materials that make up the artwork and the difficulties suffered by the piece (burials previous restorations, repainting, possible forgeries ...) we will deal with knowledge of both actions to preventive conservation and eventual restoration interventions. In this regard the contribution of physicochemical techniques in art history and knowledge and the preservation of cultural heritage in general are unquestionable, at least in theory. But we must build bridges that allow art historians and asset managers understand the contributions that these techniques are knowledge and safeguard a heritage that belongs to everyone. This thesis aims -from a thorough analysis of the current situation in Catalonia when knowledge of the contributions that science does- provide tools to these groups so that they can understand a little better the world of materials characterization of heritage. With this objective has prepared a complete handbook Physicochemical techniques aimed at art historians and managers of cultural heritage; but also proposes actions meeting between historians, managers, curators, conservators and scientists with the aim of creating a common body of knowledge.

Full textThis research proposes a critical reflection about the processes of knowledge that the technological communicative weave is introducing in our societies. For it, we resort to the manners of exhibition that deploy in the rodas of capoeira, through a transdisciplinar study of Maranhão culture. Because, we understand that the relational disposition that these rituals put in place can represent a metaphorical archetype of the fenomenology that originates with the Interface. The capoeira comes projecting a way of organizing and thinking the knowledge that does not correspond with the reflection of an essence, but with a network(net) of relations formed with other individuals, other communities and other cultures. Through the cultural heterogeneity that comes together in this social device of symbolic communication, we come to interpret the circumstances that the new technological interface unleashes in the complex maze of the contemporary communication. Since, the new visual devices of digital communication have provoked that this interface has ceased to be a mere instrument to turn into an essential part of the social structure. This disposition leads us to thinking about the role of media in the mixed identity of cultural contemporary representations, as well as, in the development of the discussion about the hybrid regime of the image and the epistemological representation capacity of the technological devices of the vision. On having adopted this perspective we understand that this devices set out a kind of representation which referred directly to the holographic dissolution of the segregated categories (subject-object-image-knowledge). And, in turn, that the recursive movement of interpellation that is established in these spaces of performance comes to represent an imaginative flow that places the subjects (users and players) facing the dilemma of taking part of a way of knowledge that is precisely the one that they want to determine.

Full textThis thesis explores the creative process and its relationship to the radically unknown as it is described in the early teachings of Chan Buddhism. I develop a metaphysical approach based on the principles of immanence and nondualism accoring to the concepts developed in the aesthetic philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. This transdisciplinary framework is used as a lens to examine two central inquiries related to the creation of the new, a critique of subjectivity and a critique of representational thought, in Deleuze’s theory of creativity and in Chan Buddhist epistemology. The analysis shows that the experience of creativity is a kind of knowledge-expression that transforms our idea of self and our conception of what we call reality. I find support in the writings about their creative process in certain modern artists and some landscape Chinesse painters from Tang and Sung dinasty (VI-XI C.), concluding that Deleuze’s concepts are a valuable tool to interpret the experience of the radically unknown.

Full textThe main aim of this thesis is to describe the production and reception of Romanesque metalwork in Catalonia. This subject has largely been neglected by the Catalan historiography, probably due to the relatively low quality of the preserved corpus of works, mainly constituted by pieces of minor materials (as copper, bronze, among others). To overcome this limitation, documentary sources have been used in the present study as fundamental evidences. This allowed the identification of major and ambitious metalwork of the period, which places Catalonia at the same level of other similar territories of medieval Europe. The thesis has been organized in two volumes. The main theoretical body is in the first one, while the second includes a catalogue of the preserved pieces and several auxiliary appendices. The theoretical body comprises eight chapters that analyze from different perspectives metalwork in Romanesque Catalonia. The first chapter focuses in materials (provenance, characteristics, and relevance). The second covers the description of local goldsmiths, a subject difficult to approach due to the scarce evidences and reports of them that available. The third study describes the importations, a fundamental subject to complete the vision of Catalan metalwork, where objects coming from Islamic territories, from the Mediterranean East, or from the limousine region in central France, are certainly relevant. The fourth chapter focuses the economic value of sumptuary objects, analyzing the patrons, the owners of metalwork and its cultural and economic usages. The following four chapters are direct approaches to the objects. First, there is a description of the sumptuary liturgical furniture of cathedrals and major monastic houses, based on documentary sources, which are quite specific in this subject. Next two chapters analyses (in a typological classification) both religious and profane objects, the second having a fundament role in medieval times that is often neglected by modern historiography. Last chapter includes four in-depth studies of four specially relevant Catalan works (the silver baldachin in Ripoll –unfortunately lost–; an enameled censer preserved in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya; the so-called ciborium from la Cerdanya or “Barcelona ciborium” also in the MNAC; and the Missal of Sant Ruf in Tortosa cathedral’s treasure). The second volume of the thesis presents the above mentioned catalogue of preserved works, which clearly shows the difference between what was done in the time and what has last. It also includes a documentary repertory with documents related to Catalan metalwork, a glossary of terms and a complete bibliography.

Full textCatalan Modernism, had the Japonism one of the sources most importants for his inspiration, not only aesthethic but also conceptual. This influence had combinated with barcelona society in the end of XIX century, specially with intelectuals and artists, the same that happened in the rest of Europe. The disussion between the industry, synonimus of modernity and progress, and the traditionals arts had needed to not make any distintions between majors arts and the wrong named decorative arts; having the japanese art as a model to follow. In this sense, we can find the intellectual Antoni García Llansó (1854-1914), art critic, historian and japanese divulgator, representing a Barcelona nineteen centruy intellectual art knowledge. Even if some authors had mentioned the name of García Llansó as a japanese culture divulgator and art critic, it has needed to be made his first biography. That’s the reason why we want to show in the first part of this dissertation, a biographical view of the intelectual. In the second chapter, we are going to study his contribution like an art critic in various historical publications such as La Ilustración de la mujer, La Ilustración. Revista Semanal de Literatura, Artes y Ciencias; La Ilustración. Revista Hispano-Americana; La Vanguardia; La Ilustración Artística. Periódico Semanal de Literatura, Artes y Ciencias; among others. Thanks to this publicacions we can analyse the thoughs of García Llansó and his evolution like an art critic. In the third chapter we are going to study his contribution like an art historian with others intellectuals as Francesc Miquel i Badia (1840-1899), writing the eight volum of Historia General del arte (1897), published by Montaner i Simón. This encyclopedia is considerated the first one dedicated in the catalan art field. In this case, García Llansó contributed with his studies like the biggest specialist iron work studious, in weapons and armours and forge, specially in the collections of Josep Estruch and Santiago Rusiñol. In four position, we are going to study the relation of García Llansó with the Japanese culture, focusing in the reason or reasons, of his election by the japanese empire as a jury of Universal Exhibition in Barcelona 1888. Also, we are going to planning various hypothesis. This chapter it’s going to be mainly focus to study the García Llansó work Dai Nipon (El Gran Japón), 1905. This work was a very important documentary source thanks to we can know the oriental art collectors and collections (Japanese and Chinese) in Barcelona. At last, we made a research of his publications with the following result, 13 work, 1 conference, 5 speech and 293 articles, which are ordenated crhonologically, so we can study the preferences and the thinker evolution of García Llansó. Also we complement this disseration with two appendix. One is dedicated to show different documentation, as a collected letters that had been conservated in Biblioteca Museu Víctor Balaguer and antoher, it shows the graphic appendix with the artistic works García Llansó’s property, today preserved thanks his descendants.
Lombao, Méndez Sonia. "El arte de acción en Catalunya. Jordi Benito y su contexto." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/286730.
Full textThis doctoral thesis proposes a new study of the performances done by the Catalan artists during the seventies. I am not only interested on the formal aspects, but mainly, on the analysis of the cultural, political and intellectual context in which this performances where produced. For this analysis I have used various sources, such as the articles of Alexandre Cirici in the local newspapers and publications of the time, as J. J. Lebel’s Le happening, which worked as sources of the diffusion of the performance art in the Catalan context. I have studied as well later sources as Teresa Camps’ criticisms, among others. With all this information I have tried to establish a general patterns of study of the Catalan performance art. These guidelines confirm that the Catalan performances have a series of cultural reference points, which come from the North American, German and French contexts. These reference points have a common base, rooted, firstly, in the philosophy of language, and secondly, in the critique of the idea of progress -associated to the control exercised by governments in late capitalist societies - defended by the Situationists. I have attempted to explain the emergence of performance art following M. Foucault recommendation of focusing more in the immediate context - national and international –rather than establishing connections with previous movements. Among the Catalan artists stands out the figure of Jordi Benito. He started as one of the most radical and impressive actionists, but what results more interesting is that he evolved to move away from the main tendencies. I interpret this detachment as a demonstration of his disenchantment with the political realignment produced by the Transition process to democracy, which took place during this time. Performances produced by Benito during this time constitute a great challenge for art criticism.

Full textHelmud Leder’s model defines and orders the affective and cognitive processes involved in the aesthetic experience. On the basis of this model, we studied the aesthetic response of a sample of female design students, who were invited to interact with an art installation. The participants filled in various pre-post questionnaires to record aspects of affective valence, self-consciousness and anxiety. After the experience in the installation, they were given other questionnaires to find out their opinions on the quality of the experience and their interpretation of the significant elements of the installation, and the degree of consistency of each of these elements with the installation as a whole. By comparing the data obtained from all the participants before and after the experience in the installation, we analysed the extent to which there were detectable trends in cognitive and affective changes that may be dependent on the stimulating material. Meanwhile, in order to verify the influence of previously provided information on the conceptual content of the installation in the response of participants, we defined two sub-groups, one of which received additional information on the contents of the installation, while the other did not. The results suggest that the “H1” art installation has the property of generating changes in some of the affective and cognitive variables studied, and that the provision of additional basic information on the concepts represented in the installation affects certain aspects of both the cognitive and affective response of the participants.

The study exposed here aims eventually break down the treatment that academic world of Fine Arts of Madrid gave the Hispanic school Modern Age during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Full textThe research has focused on the diabolical and infernal iconography in the corpus of Hispanic Beatus, between the second half of the tenth century and the first decades of the thirteenth. In the first part has inquired about the personification of evil in the figure of the Devil and how Hell was imagined in ancient cultures of the Mediterranean basin. It has devoted particular interest to judeochristians canonical Scriptures that would trigger austerity representative of the primordial images of our object of study, consistent with the theological proposals of the early Fathers. Because the images are accompanying the "Commentary on the Apocalypse" of Beatus of Liebana, it has contextualized the Hispanic production in the European art scene and has analyzed the apocalyptic writings extracanonical and oral or written Muslim tradition as possible iconographic sources when representing the characters and the places of the Other World. The work includes the full survey of eleven scenes in which the forces of evil operating in the eschatological age and then are defeated and imprisoned in punitive stay throughout the corpus of twenty codices. Their analysis shows that while the iconography is faithful to the hispanic iconography tradition of its first copies, the style adapts to the formal guidelines of Romanesque, depending on the internationalization of that style. The photographic appendix meets for the first time all the diabolical and infernal images in the twenty seven copies of the Beatus.
Ortells, Nicolau Xavier. "Urban demolition and the aesthetics of recent ruins in experimental photography from China." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/288299.
Full textIn reform era China, demolition and rubble has become an unavoidable presence in most major cities. Reifying “the menace to the city and its memory”, in words of Yomi Braester, demolition has attracted many artists and filmmakers, who have incorporated it in their works. This dissertation contributes to recent studies of the ruin imaginary in Chinese art and visual culture, and to the emerging body of literature on Chinese photography with an analysis of experimental photographers who have engaged with urban demolition. The predominance of the theme of urban demolition responds, first and foremost, to the fact that urban rubble has been ubiquitous and enduring. In this sense, this dissertation sketches the institutional and legal framework regulating land development in China, to account for the particular dynamics responsible to the emergence and visibility of ruinous landscapes. At the same time, the focus on artistic experimentalism serves to focus on the ways in which the different artists analyzed have transformed demolition sites into ruins, going beyond a documentary or activist depiction of demolition. In this sense, the dissertation also partakes in the current transdisciplinar revision of ruins studies, which foregrounds the constructedness of ruins as a discourse and critical category. To do so, the dissertation examines over 40 photographic series spanning from the early 1990s to the present, detects their aesthetic and discursive strategies, and divides them in different chapters according to a chronological sequence, and commonalities in their approach to demolition. In addition to the immediate context of contemporary photography from China, the dissertation also explores the connections of contemporary photographic projects with aesthetic traditions and conventions in a comparative perspective between Europe and China, and in particular with the pioneering photo-conceptualist artists of the 1960s and 1970s who carried out the avant-garde critique of photography by means of a conceptualist revolution, a process in which the imaginary of ruination was key. After analyzing the different photographic works, the dissertation highlights conceptualism, performativity, and digital technologies as the main strategies for the creation of ruins. It also posits a temporal evolution in the style and attitude of the artists, with an exploration of the newest photographic works on demolition concurrent with the writing of this work.

Full textThis thesis examines the art produced by Iranian artists between 1979 and 2012, focusing on the consequences caused by the Islamic Revolution. It shows how the censorship imposed by Jomeini, provoked that artists in literature, poetry, music, painting, photography, cinema and videoart escaped from Iran and integrated in different United States and European countries, forming a large Iranian colony. An important number of intellectuals struggling to pass new ideological frontiers, religious, social and cultural, despite doubts and contradictions, questioning their own values and behavior with a deep desire to strengthen their cultural identity, trying to get rid of the imposition of thoughts and religious beliefs, deeply interiorized from centuries. They play a public role denouncing the events in his country, and although a certain risk, his voice may have international reverberation makes them stronger, safe and highly assertive. The thesis works a comparative study between art done by Iranian artists in exile, with art produced by artists living in Iran, beginning with new disciplines such as digital art, video, installation and performance, as well as a new approach to photography, much more disruptive and protest that documentary. They have been able to set up a new alternative version of national identity. Iran-based artists are obliged to work from the metaphor and allegory to avoid the risk of being accused of traitors or rebels. They need to be in the range of what they can say and what they say, between what is suggested and what means. An ironic game between reality and fiction used to communicate their displeasure to the world. Although living in Iran, their eyes look to the United States, Canada, Great Britain or France, countries where lives the largest Iranian community. This research shows too that although the differences between art made by Iranian artists in exile and those who remain engaged in Iran, and despite the different ways they focus their artistic discourses, it is shared an important aspect: they include in their work ancient and traditional Persian cultural roots as calligraphy, mythology, history and poetry.
Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/387316.
Full textThe present investigation of the complex fear – terror, as inherent in the human condition, aims to observe how this complex is manifested in the history of art, particularly in the visual arts since the beginning of modernity to late twentieth century. The manifestation of the complex is carried out through three figures, which arise from the disintegration of the medieval figure of the demonic: the sublime, the sinister and the abject. The sublime refers to a coming threat of force located beyond the individual reason; the sinister to the threat by the unconscious; and the abject which comes from the body, moving into the social body. Reflection on the three figures is constructed primarily from literary, psychological, anthropological and philosophical sources, maintaining the same axis as an iconographic atlas that reflects the complex manifestation of fear - terror.
Nadal, Iniesta Javier. "Arte y contrarreforma en la ciudad de Murcia." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Murcia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/128916.
Full textBoth the religious reforming movements against the Church of Rome arisen in the sixteenth century Europe and the dissenting voices of the above mentioned church led to the Council of Trent in the middle of this century. After the celebration of this council and till the middle of the eighteenth century the result was a new stage in the Catholic Church and its environment, widely known as Counter-Reformation. This movement went beyond the theme of religion and affected the society, traditions and culture. This reforming spirit was highlighted by many and different artistic projects taken place in the different churches from the ecclesiastic heritage and the religious communities around the world. In order to accomplish this task, the Vatican was supported by the bishops. In fact, they were given the necessary powers to apply the required changes mainly by means of the diocesan Synods and the pastoral visits. The main target of this research is to study the seventeenth century artistic works from a more cross-curricular point of view. It consists of analysing the works of art not as isolated items but taking into account their historic, social and religious context meeting new liturgical and devotional needs. Therefore, this study is intended to fill this gap considering the different artistic manifestations of Murcia because of the needs of that time as a whole and in a more inclusive way and not as a particular discipline monograph as it has been previously done. All that tries to provide a deep insight into the Baroque art of the Region of Murcia from a more cross-curricular point of view interconnecting history, society, culture, mindsets and religion. According to the applied methodology, it can be divided into three main stages. The first of them consisted of establishing the starting point and collecting all the required bibliography to deal with this thesis. Later on, the search was refined and it was basically focused on the Diocese of Cartagena during the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Once all this literature was gathered, it was possible to set the geographical area of the study and the time needed to be devoted. It was delimited to the city of Murcia as a reference of this Diocese. According to the timeframe, it began in 1583 when the first Counter-Reformist bishop arrived at the Diocese, well known as Manrique de Lara and it finishes in 1705 when the bishop Belluga took position of the Diocese, being his Episcopacy a period of new Counter-Reformation. The second stage was based on searching many documents in different local, national and international files either visiting the places where they are set or finding them on the digital and Internet files. Finally, the third stage of the methodology lied in a reflection about the obtained data in order to clearly organise the research through a deep analysis and a systemized process. The conclusions arisen shed light on the fact that Murcia was a very good example to learn how the guidelines of the Council of Trent were applied, adapting to the particular characteristics of the city in the cathedral, the churches, the convents, the hermitages and the religious celebrations as the Holly Week, the Corpus Christi procession and the Canonizations, as well. Thus, the penitential brotherhoods have the leading role in the Passion Week. They were encouraged and regulated in the Council of Trent under the bishop’s authority. On the other hand, the celebration of the Corpus Christi and its procession gathered the main high-ranking members of the city struggling to become more and more relevant and be noticed. Obviously, all of this has been seen from a necessary, broad and cross-curricular point of view, interrelating some aspects with others and providing a study of the issue in its full richness.
Full textThis PhD research project analyzes the specific contemporary connection between fiction and visual arts. In the context of what Arthur Danto calls post-historical era the boundaries between arts have diluted. In this new paradigm, it becomes apparent that there are no stylistic or philosophical constraints. There is no special way works of art have to be. Since the breakdown of his relationship with the act of vision, visual arts have radicalized their dependence to theoretical sphere, establishing a central role of word. In this context and in constant dialogue with the "eruption of reality," some artists create fictions, works where spectators are invited to imagine beyond a factual fact. The focus of this research is to investigate what we call fictional space: the coordinates and signs that make emerge a story and that create a novelistic position. These are fictions that can not be read on a syntactic order, there is no plot composed and the figure of the narrator is diluted among the artist, the voice projected, and the public.

Full textThis doctoral thesis studies in detail the restoration process of the cloister of San Pedro el Viejo monastery in Huesca at the end of the nineteenth century. The purpose of the restoration was to return the building to its original Late-Romanesque condition. The medieval arrangement of the capitals in the cloister is reconstructed through the thorough analysis of reports, plans, drawings and photographs from the restoration, as well as from previous sources. A complete catalogue of the 75 sculptural pieces (original and modern) associated to the cloister, most of them hitherto unstudied, is also used in the reconstruction. All of these sources are used to assay an iconographic interpretation of the ensemble. The immediate surroundings of the cloister are also systematically studied and researched, that is, its perimeter walls, doors, arcosolia, chapels and necrologium. Several hypotheses have been proposed on its constructive development and its functionality. In this doctoral thesis a complete reading of the monastery’s Cartulary, compiled by Garin, a monk who lived in the 13th century, aiming to provide new information on the history of the monastery in general, and of its church and cloister in particular, has been carried out. This has allowed the author to identify a good number of artisans heretofore unknown as well as the original location of three Romanic tympanums still preserved.

Full textInteractive art installations, a novel form of expression, have their roots in experimental art forms from the first decades of the XXth century. Thanks to recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence and neuroscience, such installations have reached a new, highly sophis-ticated level of human-machine interactions. For such 'intelligent' spaces I use the term: Performative-Interactive Art Installations (P-IAIs). Due to the relative novelty of P-IAIs, there are no studies analyzing them from the human agent's perspective so far. For this purpose, I have reviewed the utility of three related cognitive linguistics frameworks: the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson), image schemas (Johnson) and the Conceptual Integration (Blending) Theory (Fauconnier and Turner) using twelve P-IAIs. The symbolic meanings of the analyzed P-IAIs have been converted into linguistics metaphors using Lakoffian models, which has turned out to be a useful but incomplete approach. The understanding of P-IAIs was subsequently improved by using tools from the Blending Theory (BT). BT combines present and the past contextual information of the agent, highlighting compression of vital relationships between these input mental spaces and producing so called blend. The study analyzes agent's sensorial processes (in particular: sensorimotor), perception, metaphor processing and emotional responses. The main results are: (i) automatic sensorimotor reactions invoked by the relevant subset of analyzed P-IAIs are important for understanding the implications of such P-IAIs; (ii) such installations induce sensorial and subsequent perceptive changes within the agent specific to P-IAIs. Finally, I propose that the Conceptual Integration Theory is an useful tool for interpreting agent's cognitive responses to IAI-P.

Full textIn the context of creation process occasioning video-artistic practice designed for a specific place or applied to a sculpture, the expansion broadens its meaning. It does not only suggest the light projection on a surface, but it gives as well room for a convergence of disciplines, integration of poetics, and merging of different methods into one action. The extension of an image to a movement implies an itinerary from a story possessing its own image, to the relationship which the story establishes with a place or a three-dimensional object, and through the narration resulting from the meeting of both. This point of convergence generates multiple bridges and dialectics. The thesis analyses three of possible areas: video art, sculpture, and cinematography. The framework of this theoretical and practical study on an expanded video art offers the possibility of navigation through vague territories of creation process. We thus interpret itineraries equivalent to the ours intuitively assuming that what impulses these movements in the first and last resort is a common quest for a longed for image which would reflect the profound sense of the author's vital experience and vision. The expanded video art as a medium of convergence and synthesis of creation can generate an adaptable and inclusive procedure in relation to the purpose of each undertaken project. Its practical and theoretical itinerary facilitates interdisciplinary convergences, intimate introspections, poetical expressions, and politic action. At the same time, it is an ideal framework of research in order to guide the longing which impulses the movement.

Full textThe principal aim of this doctoral thesis is to carry out an iconographic study of different Catalan paintings, sculptures and prints from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that have music as performance as their primary or secondary theme. A description of the socio-cultural context influencing these iconographic programmes is made following analysis of documentary sources which talk about music. This is a new historiographical analysis which reflects on musical iconography as a discipline and, for the first time, allows the context of the age which these works represent and the intentions of their artists and patrons to be addressed. Around sixty images have been used for the description which reconstructs the role of music in different situations and social contexts. It is divided into two parts: the first refers to the iconographical-musical images with religious content. The musical angels of the Baroque period found on some Catalan altarpieces, representations of saints with musical attributes and original and unique representations from the Escolania de Montserrat are studied in this section. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the images promoted by the monarchy, the nobility and the bourgeoisie. The main themes in which music and art have become activities of leisure and entertainment are studied. In other words, the creative sketches and drawings with genre scenes such as allegorical images commemorating political power. For the first time a reading is made of these iconographic programmes, with a special focus on the symbology, organology and the artistic trends circulating around Catalonia during those centuries. This has led to a parallel description of some of the historic events in Catalonia, such as the arrival in Barcelona of Archduke Charles of Austria, the visit by Charles III and the first performances of Catalan operatic works. This doctoral thesis is therefore a complement to the historical and musicological studies that have been carried out to date and a new documentary source to illustrate and understand the role of music in Catalan society.
Full textThe PhD dissertation presented here relates the collection of classical sculpture that Cardinal Despuig gathered during the eighteenth century, early nineteenth century in Italy and is now preserved in the Museu d'Historia de la Ciutat de Palma.Antoni Despuig developed a fruitful ecclesiastical career that led him to settle in Rome following his appointment as Auditor of the Sacred Rota in 1785 and culminating with obtaining the cardinal's purple in 1803 under Pope Pius VII.Like other characters in their social status, Despuig turned to archeology as one among other ways to provide themselves with a part of the sculptural background that would shape his collection. The most important excavations took place in the ancient city of Ariccia, located in the Alban Hills and carried Despuig to give the remains of a luxurious Roman villa, traditionally judged as belonging to Plotina’s freedman, Agathyrsus. In addition to the parts obtained through archeology, Despuig actively participated in the fervid happened antiquarian market at the time. The Despuig’s sculptural collection, gathered first in Rome, moved to Raixa in late eighteenth century. There, Despuig created a museum open to the public. For the development of the museum exhibition, the Majorcan sent to Raixa three sculptors from Italy, Pascual Cortes, Luigi Melis and Giovanni Trivelli and later joined them Francesco Carlo Lazzerini.Although the immediate heirs of Cardinal would have continued to work in the museum, which opened a few years after the death of Cardinal, unfortunately in 1897, the eighth Earl of Montenegro, Ramon Despuig Fortuny, then owner of the collection. proceeded to sale the collection. Relevant pieces were acquired by private collectors, as the millionaire brewer Carl Jacobsen. Another important block of sculptures are auctioned at the Hotel Drouot in 1900. The intervention of some Majorcan intellectuals could slow down the spread of what remained of the collection that eventually was acquired by the city of Palma in 1923 and installed in Bellver Castle in 1932. Until 1995 collection is exhibited in the courtyard and three rooms on the main floor of the castle, headquarters to the Palma’s Museum of History.Unlike the pieces emigrated to European and North American collections, which have been the subject of recurring studies, the bulk of the Despuig collection, still in Majorca, has not suffered the same fate. This PhD dissertation is born from the need to know in depth also parts of Mallorca to get to establish a holistic approach to the collection and place and interpret it correctly within the corresponding historical frame. Consequently, the objective of this work consisted of a detailed study of the sculptural pieces that made up the Despuig collection, currently housed in the Museu d'Historia de la Ciutat de Palma, situated in the Bellver Castle. Critical analysis of parts helped to clarify aspects of its origin, iconography and function, as well as those pertaining to the history of the copies from the moment of its creation, such as the restorations which were submitted and possible reinterpretations meaning they may have suffered.

The thesis is an anthropological approach on the art in its different forms: Painting, music, literature and sculpture. And all these forms are examined starting from the artist. The axes vertebrating this study are two, on which depend the other points, as follow: 1. Considers the art as an innate physic-psychological-spiritual activity of the human nature. This point is analyzed in the first part of the work, specifically in the A. PRELIMINARY INTRODUCTION. 2. The second axis deals with the power of art: a) in its relation with the factual powers. This aspect is dealed to a large extent in the section B. ART AND POWER, and b) the power which comes out from the internal dynamism self of the art. This point is developed in the section C. THE POWER OF ART. According to the basis of these thoughts the doctoral dissertation intents to answer to the question from where comes the strength that is born in the art itself, even to become attractive to the factual powers, to the political ideologies to the political totalitarism. Some of these aspects are developed starting from tow wellknown contemporaneous artists: Frida Kahlo and Marc Chagall. There are some non the important subjects, which without being the direct matter of this thesis, have rose necessarily from its central points, and so they have been approached more or less deeply. These secondary aspects are: a) What do we understand today when we speak about art and aesthetics?; b) Subjection and freedom of the artist in the creative process and how both can live together in the artist (Unfortunately the tack of clear definition proliferates in this field). Both outside the external pressions and conditions to which is subjected and inside due to creative process itself and to the work of art; c) The art as «value» as human activity, measures the level of humanity of the society. In fact, the art can become means of humanization and recovery of the lost and despised values. And consequently the art is also understood in its pedagogical and communicating value. And is of course in this sense that our work approaches the power of the art and the relation between power and art. And the reality is so because its communicative strength is also transformating capacity. And precisely this capacity can become a man’s manipulation by the man, and consequently the perversion of the art’s nature and of the human being. A signification aspect of this thesis is the art’s presentation as mediation and the art’s pureness as genuineness. The pure art does not look for manipulating aims, and does not submit to the leading powers. The true art is transformer and open to the possibility of the meeting with a «you» and with the spiritual «You». The thesis is fully aware that the subject is deeply infinite and open, so the work according its own nature can’t close all the aspects, but can suggest new statements.

This doctoral thesis is a study of the 13th Century monumental sculpture in the Seu Vella in Lleida (the old romanesque cathedral that presides over this town), which constitutes one of the richest sculptural bodies in the 13th Century Catalan artistic panorama. The main goal of the investigation is to contextualise and understand the reasons behind its presence in relation to the moment in which it was created. The contribution being made lies in offering an unprecedented, global vision of this body of images, based on various types of materials: documents, bibliography, archaeological data and the sculptures themselves as source material. Faced with the persistence of biblical themes, the starting point chosen will be the hypothesis that one of the approaches that influenced the general design themes was an ecclesiastic ideology of the fight against heresy, mainly Islam and Catharism, which resulted in the presence of representations of the incarnation of Christ, which was denied by those doctrines.

In support of this thesis it is used to analyse the process followed by artists from different periods, even without having that goal, with his self-portraits set a precedent on the subject. In the self-portrait the artist is represented not only as seen, but also as he knows it is inside. The experience of one's personality appears to represent the manifest, hence observing a self-portrait to surface aspects of the author's personality contemplating a less obvious reality. Of particular interest are the variations that can be seen with the passage of time in the way you look, been described and communicating through self-portrait, both as artists analysed as regard to the author's personal experience. To allow the observation of a possible self-portrait as impartial judgment, a method to facilitate the action of judging on himself with the equanimity of one who is not a party proposes.

Full textThis research works in to get the concept "metaphysics of everyday objects" from the work of the greek painter Giorgio de Chirico (Volos, 1888-1978), in order to test as an analysis tool for object theater. At the end, the definition of a concept consists of three principles and two-step process understood as a dynamic of poetization from everyday objects in the scene. I put as example, the metaphysical analysis of one everyday object in the work of the polish theater director Tadeusz Kantor (Wielopole,1915-1990): “the wardrobe” inside In the little mannor house (1961). This definition can be applied as a tool for understanding creative processes at any stage project that works with everyday objects.

Taking mainly the processes related to mental health as a way of analyzing the configuration of such condition, the deliberation about the ways of action for the dissolution of man-without-history pass by the political narrative, found here in the cultural and social pedagogy project developed in Barcelona named Radio Nikosia. The narrative is the intervention to combat this condition, the same narrative structures the research methodology. Keywords: narrative, citizenship, mental health, presence, social pedagogy.

Full textThe HIFRENSA settlement is a residential complex built to accommodate workers of Vandellòs-I nuclear power plant. It also has a number of facilities at neighbourhood scale. The set is connected by pedestrian crossings with public squares and road scheme in cul-de-sac. In 1967 Antonio Bonet was commissioned to build the settlement, the administrative offices and other technical buildings on nuclear power plant site . The thesis exposes Bonet as architect researcher. At HIFRENSA settlement, a clear line between architecture and urbanism cannot be drawn. Bonet searches an universal solution. with a type or pattern definition as an element liable to be improved, refined, systematized and prefabricated. The pattern can mutate either to accommodate a construction system or for another needs, topographic, climatic or programmatic. Particularly in Bonet’s work, also to meet a higher requirement: its urban planning support. The greatest difficulty lies on the definition of an order judgment that can give a higher shape to the units, dwellings or facilities , with the intention of avoiding a monotonous urban complex and lack of identity.

Full textThe present thesis is the soundscape amid frames of synchronicity as a creative potential proceeding of the sound repositioning as a language matrix and artistic thinking in the scope of the contemporary spatiality of the visual arts. It forms part of the research include auditory sensory experience (aurality) as relevant qualitative instance for aesthetic cognition, semantic and symbolic structure in the art field. The conceptual and methodological framework include, from aspects of the problem of knowledge, to reflections on the intersections and inter- relationships between art and science. The systemic paradigm and the semiotics serve as instruments in service to the descriptive, analytical and critical-reflexive process of the artistic production. The theoretical foundation of this work is based, therefore, on systemic thinking as a paradigmatic platform, and the semiotic theory of Peirce’s conception as a logical instrument that allows us to conceive the art as a symbolic universe, a system of visual and audible signs. The SOUNDING TRANSITS addresses the soundscape within the scope of creation and academic research from collective and collaborative experiences and actions carried out between 2010 and 2013, including researchers artists of the both group BR : AC / UB - Universidad de Barcelona and GIIP / UNESP Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho. SOUNDING TRANSITS provides a succinct certification of creative practices within the university academic environment and warranted by systemic synchronicity in the qualitative integration of artist researchers. A clear and incisive proof of the growing influence and importance that sound, aurality and soundscape have gained as indispensable sensory experiences in the intricate process of contemporary construction of the narratives and dialogues among art, society, culture and intangible cultural heritage.

Starting with some important examples from the contemporary portuguese art history, this dissertation aims for a reflection about the crystallization of models of interpretation in art history beyond the portuguese situation, focusing especially on contemporary art history. Always resting on specific authors and concepts, counterparts are studied, on one hand by analyzing, critically, the paradigm of the copy introduced by the now very in.uent north-american art history or criticism, that started in the 1970's. This analysis focuses on the in.uence Walter Benjamin had in the consolidation of that paradigm. On the other hand, Walter Benjamin is also taken in account as a still very useful conceptual resource for rethinking art history and its object, particularly by reading his texts about infancy and the relations of infancy with history and memory, in articulation with his more well-known concepts. This re.ection, supported by other authors besides Benjamin, aims at a proposal of an art history written with the awareness of the pre-established orders of the discourses. And that authorizes itself either the use of the instruments of its field of knowledge, either the insubordination to those instruments. Finally a selection of Eduardo Batarda's paintings consists in an useful case-study, for it is the example of a practice in painting that avoids historical classi.cations and that structures itself as a palimpsest, with endless rami.cations of meanings, false-meanings and references, becoming thus a very effective tool for rethinking art history and its object.

Full textThis thesis seeks to inquire into the dynamics of visibility and legitimacy of the emerging art making from the context Barcelona, ways to intervene in the forms of subjectivity of the creators. It performs a reflextion theoretically, moves between the “Institutional critique” and generational approach to young artists about the Institucionalization legitimizing their work, giving the work a personal approval on its production. The idea of cultural production or creation of work is based on a list of items that define and contextualize to become Art. These items of which we speak are several elements that depart from the context in which this production is carried out, to the art of formalization. However, in this thesis we intentd to also settle on relfection whiy is Art and that what we call Art? It is important to know and study how communication systems, and therefore the media coverage have set ways of seeing and understanding reality have influencied the contemporary Art, and more specifically the emergint art as a phenomenon of effervescence consisting of individuals who have grouwn up with the media, and have assimilated communicative facts based on the visibility and power.

Full textThis thesis reconsiders geometry within the field of contemporary art, trying to analyze and define a change in the nature of its meaning and value that in our hypothesis of work began in the 60s of the last century. This study aspires to question, paralelly, the classic conception of geometry within the most recent art, as the ideal order, representation of the “pure” and “neutral” form, both attributes belonging to a timeless logic rather than real-time experience. Throughout this thesis we have studied how the projective meaning of geometric art has changed over the last decades, within the evolution of contemporary painting and sculpture, and how these variations in concept have, consequently, a different meaning in reception, the manner of presentation and the spectator’s perception of the work. To develop the present research I have used elements of formal analysis in a representative group of paintings and sculptures, and their expressive interests. These works have renounced an autonomist or ideal conception of art and, on the contrary, favour the effect of geometry in a physical interface with the real space of the experience, social or cultural, thus differing from the representational and mental framework of the idealist model. From this perspective, I initially examine the works of various North American artists from the 80s, for whom the geometric abstraction, for their critical attitude, is a new coded device, with a material basis, which organizes references to contemporary society and culture, far from a formalist “pure” language that tries to separate itself from material culture. Although it was in the eighties when the public discussion on the “crisis” of geometry was laid out, in the decades of the 60s and 70s the first indication of the “crisis” had already come up. In the United States some representatives of the minimalism of this period started, in a more or less conscious way, to link geometry to the material production of the industrial society of that time, in parallel, others developed a critical and social analysis of cultural power, implicit in their signifiers: shapes, materials, scale etc. From 1980, during the decade of the 90s and until the present day, that dominant image of geometry, often aggressive or brutal, would radically change with the appearance of a new type of geometrical works, to a certain degree the product of this post-industrial society, tied to consumption, to digital technology and to entertainment. In the hands of this generation of artists, not so tied as the previous to the industrial experience of the materials as to that of the computer and its possibilities as image technology –allowing the projection and work in the characteristic fields of new non-Euclidian geometries: fractals, topological or in the integration of natural models- geometry emerges, in this way, as powerful tool for artistic experimentation generating increasingly complex spaces and shapes in unlimited variations. These new works, be they installations or algorithmic or sculptural projects, are constituted within dynamic, interactive and multisensorial surroundings. Geometry is thus shown as a stimulating, creative project and process, capable of triggering a fragile, multiple and open engagement between the work as a material and experimental system and the spectator who thinks, feels and acts. This comprehensive reconsideration of geometry would work as much on a cultural codes basis, these being the representational registers which make up our image of reality and define our experience, as on the basis of a complex and new instrumentality. In other words, the underlying geometry would be considered as a different artistic experience, with marked characteristics and singularity. The next question will be then, of course, how we should view and reconsider these new possibilities of artistic creation.
