Abstract:
Microbial metabolites have been identified as a promising class of natural herbicides due to their effective control against weeds and a relatively low environmental impact. Here we report on the potency and crop safety of a natural compound with herbicidal properties, the metabolite SPRI-70014 from Streptomyces griseolus CGMCC 1370. The compound showed excellent herbicidal activities on various broadleaf and gramineous weeds in both greenhouse and field trials. In germination inhibition experiments, SPRI-70014 inhibited the emergence of both root and shoot at 1 mg L−1. At a dose of 31.3 g ai ha−1, SPRI-70014 provided effective control over most broadleaf weeds in greenhouse trials. Observations on absorption and translocation using a cucumber plant model system indicated that SPRI-70014 could be absorbed by the root but only partly by the stem. Field trials showed that SPRI-70014 provided effective control over most weed species tested at a dose of 1,000 g ai ha−1. Crop safety experiments showed that the compound had no harmful effect on peanut or wheat plants at doses up to 2,000 g ai ha−1. These results indicated that this compound could be developed as a potential POST herbicide for control of broadleaf weeds in peanut and wheat fields.

Abstract:
Abstract The murine MHC Ib molecule Qa-1b is known to play roles in both antigen presentation during infection by intracellular pathogens, as well as an immunoregulatory role in autoimmune and viral infection disease models. It has been shown that Qa-1b is able to suppress NK cell and CD8+ T cell activity through the interaction of Qa-1b /self-peptide complexes with inhibitory CD94/NKG2A molecules on activated effector cells. We find that Qa-1b expression is upregulated on a variety of cell types in a mouse model of low-dose, aerogenic infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Further, Mtb-infected, Qa-1b -deficient mice demonstrate increased production of INF-γ and IL-17A as compared to wild-type mice, suggesting that Qa-1b primarily plays an immunoregulatory role in Mtb infection. Qa-1b -deficient mice also display increased expression of inhibitory CD94/NKG2A complexes on CD8+ T cells during infection, indicating a potential mechanism by which Qa-1b is able to control immune responses during Mtb infection.

Fuller, Christopher. "Tracing environmental processes using cold dust with the Herschel Space Observatory." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/70414/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an investigation into the effect of environment on a galaxy's ISM. I have used new data from the Herschel Space Observatory, which detects the peak of far-infrared (FIR) emission from cold dust (20 K) in nearby galaxies. Using data from the Herschel Fornax Cluster Survey (HeFoCS) and the Herschel Astrophysical Large Area Terahertz Survey (H-ATLAS) I have measured the FIR fluxes of galaxies in the nearby Fornax cluster and Coma region. In order to measure these FIR fluxes I used the optical shape and size of galaxies as a starting point. In the case of Fornax there was already a high quality optical catalogue, the Fornax Cluster Catalogue (FCC; Ferguson, 1989). However, in the case of the Coma cluster and filament I created my own using data from the SDSS spectroscopic survey, selecting galaxies based on position and velocity. Thus, creating the Coma Cluster Catalogue (CCC) and Coma Filament Catalogue (CFC). For galaxies detected in at least 3 and 5 Herschel bands for the HeFoCS and H-ATLAS galaxies, respectively, I fitted a modified blackbody with a fixed beta emissivity index of 2, yielding dust masses and temperatures for 22 and 198 HeFoCS and H-ATLAS galaxies, respectively. All Early-type galaxies showed a lower mean dust mass and hotter temperature than found for late-types. When comparing early-type galaxies across all sampled environments, their FIR properties are found to be statistically identical. I only find a significant difference in dust-to-stellar mass for late-type galaxies between the filament and a field sample. This may suggest that the effect of the cluster and filament is more subtle than previously thought and that the evolution of the ISM components has mostly taken place well before the cluster was assembled. I use a method to compare multiple parameters for the Coma cluster and filament galaxies and how each is aected by local environmental density. Late types show a moderate change in most parameters with the exception of gas-to-stars, which is strongly affected by environmental density. I suggest that late-types' lower sSFRs and higher stellar masses in the cluster when compared to the filament indicate that the galaxies in the cluster formed earlier and are hence more evolved. In order to understand how the baryonic components of the galaxies change as a whole between the cluster and filament I have created mass functions. Using Schechter function fits to stellar, gas and dust mass density ratios for the Coma cluster and filament I calculated the ratio of gas-to-stellar and dust-to-stellar mass densities for each environment finding that Virgo, Fornax, Coma and the filament were gas deficient when compared to the field, but all their dust mass functions appeared identical. This further demonstrates that dust is largely invariant to environment, whereas, gas is affected well before entry into the cluster.

Torlesse, Harriet. "Parasitic infection and anaemia during pregnancy in Sierra Leone." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7014/.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of intestinal nematode infections in the aetiology of iron deficiency and anaemia in pregnant women was investigated in peri-urban and rural areas of Western Sierra Leone. A randomised placebo-controlled field trial was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of a single course of albendazole (400 mg) and daily iron-folate supplements (36 g iron and 5 mg folate), administered after the first trimester, as control interventions for intestinal nematode infections and anaemia during pregnancy. At baseline, in the first trimester of pregnancy, the prevalence (and geometric mean intensity) of intestinal nematodes was as follows: Ascaris lumbricoides 21.1% (267 eggs per gram); Necator americanus 66.5% (191 epg); and Trichuris trichiura 71.9% (93 epg). Chronic undernutrition (height < 150 cm) and chronic energy deficiency (body mass index < 18.5 kg/m2) was found in 5.4% and 8.2% of women respectively. Anaemia (Hb < 110 g/l) was diagnosed in 58.7% of women and associated with iron deficiency (serum ferritin < 20 μg/l) in 21.2% of women. Iron deficiency is likely to have a dietary basis in these women. The dietary iron intake was predominantly non-haem, and was estimated to supply less than 1 g of absorbable iron daily. High fertility and closely spaced pregnancies placed additional stress on iron stores. The findings of this study indicate that anthelminthic treatment should be included in strategies to control maternal anaemia in Western Sierra Leone. It is recommended that pregnant women routinely receive a single course of anthelminthics after the first trimester, alongside daily iron-folate supplements, to minimise the decline in maternal Hb concentration during pregnancy. These interventions could be implemented through the existing primary health care system, although the use of traditional birth attendants should be investigated as a means of improving compliance and coverage. The implications of these findings for public health policy in other antenatal populations will depend on the local epidemiology of intestinal nematode infections and on the extent of underlying maternal iron deficiency and anaemia.

Bamarouf, Yasser Ahmad A. "Enhancing the e-commerce experience through haptic feedback interaction." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7014/.

Full text
Abstract:
The sense of touch is important in our everyday lives and its absence makes it difficult to explore and manipulate everyday objects. Existing online shopping practice lacks the opportunity for physical evaluation, that people often use and value when making product choices. However, with recent advances in haptic research and technology, it is possible to simulate various physical properties such as heaviness, softness, deformation, and temperature. The research described here investigates the use of haptic feedback interaction to enhance e-commerce product evaluation, particularly haptic weight and texture evaluation. While other properties are equally important, besides being fundamental to the shopping experience of many online products, weight and texture can be simulated using cost-effective devices. Two initial psychophysical experiments were conducted using free motion haptic exploration in order to more closely resemble conventional shopping. One experiment was to measure weight force thresholds and another to measure texture force thresholds. The measurements can provide better understanding of haptic device limitation for online shopping in terms of the availability of different stimuli to represent physical products. The outcomes of the initial psychophysical experimental studies were then used to produce various absolute stimuli that were used in a comparative experimental study to evaluate user experience of haptic product evaluation. Although free haptic exploration was exercised on both psychophysical experiments, results were relatively consistent with previous work on haptic discrimination. The threshold for weight force discrimination represented as downward forces was 10 percent. The threshold for texture force discrimination represented as friction forces was 14.1 percent, when using dynamic coefficient of friction at any level of static coefficient of friction. On the other hand, the comparative experimental study to evaluate user experience of haptic product information indicated that haptic product evaluation does not change user performance significantly. However, although there was an increase in the time taken to complete the task, the number of button click actions tended to decrease. The results showed that haptic product evaluation could significantly increase the confidence of shopping decision. Nevertheless, the availability of haptic product evaluation does not necessarily impose different product choices but it complements other selection criteria such as price and appearance. The research findings from this work are a first step towards exploring haptic-based environments in e-commerce environments. The findings not only lay the foundation for designing online haptic shopping but also provide empirical support to research in this direction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present doctoral thesis offers an intersectional analysis of the housing pathways of working class young people in Bologna, and of the role played by their family in the transition towards independent living, within a broader reflection on processes of reproduction and intergenerational transmission of social inequalities. The first part sets out the national and international sociological debate on youth’ social and housing inequalities, as well as the debate on social class. In the second part, the focus is on the empirical research. In particular, questions are raised on how families belonging to a particular social class, as understood in Bourdieu’s terms, negotiate and support the transition to independent living of their adult-children. The empirical study consists of a retrospective longitudinal qualitative research, carried out in Bologna in 2013-2014 on a sample of working-class families. Through life histories, young-adults and their parents were asked to reconstruct their biographies and housing experiences. The research highlights the emergence of specific and creative "micro-economic family systems". Through analysis on the collected materials, it was possible to identify several forms of parental support in young-adults’ pathways towards independent living, embedded in a wider system of intergenerational support, which continues even after leaving the family nest and confirms once again the strong ties characterizing Italian families. In the study, particular attention is given also to logics of legitimacy of parental support, underlying working class families' decisions of helping their adult-children. Finally, by comparing young adults’ idea of independence with that of their parents, the research reveals an apparent contradiction between representations of autonomy and independent living and everyday life practices, which is being solved by negotiating, between the two generations taken in exam, the meaning of independence itself.

The term "Mixed Culture" refers to the sociological condition experienced by those who have a cultural heritage which is different from the culture in which they were raised or live in. In this mixture, there are characteristics from either that remain distinct, yet coexist. I identify myself and my culture as an American, but I was also raised with and practice certain traditional Korean customs which were passed down to me by family. I find that I am constantly moving between two states, where I identify with either of my two cultures, sometimes distinctly separate or at other times both concurrently. This constant moving between two different states or cultures, as well as being able to simultaneously identify with two different positions describes the experience of being part of a mixed culture. This thesis takes these definitions and sociological characteristics as the starting point to defining Asian American architecture. Instead of continuing to base Asian American architecture on applied decorations, the architecture will draw upon the spatial characteristics found in traditional architectural examples, as well as juxtapose different elements within one building. This center and hotel has three components: a health center offering instruction and treatments based upon East Asian medicinal practices such as acupuncture, herbal pharmacology, massage, yoga, and tai chi, a tea cafe for service to the street and a small hotel whose residents will be registered users of the center from outside of the Bay Area. In addition to the architectural elements and the program, the site, located in between Nob Hill and the historic core of Chinatown in San Francisco, California, acts as another arena to address the mixing between two different neighborhoods.

Accurate sensory perception in noisy environments requires physiological mechanisms that reduce sensory interference. In the auditory system, it has been hypothesized that attentional control of cochlear responses to sound facilitates listening in noisy environments by modulating the effects of medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent activity in the cochlea. However, conclusive support for this hypothesis has been elusive over the past 50 years. We investigated this issue using a novel experimental paradigm in which human subjects performed auditory tasks on transient sounds presented in acoustic noise, while we recorded click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) in the task ear. CEOAEs are low-level sounds that are generated in the cochlea, recorded in the ear-canal and provide a non-invasive measure of the MOC effects on cochlear mechanical responses to sound. Our results show clear evidence that attending to transient sounds in noise caused an increase in MOC activity during the auditory task. MOC activity was greater on trials with correct responses compared to trials with incorrect responses, which provides evidence that the MOC activity brought about a perceptually beneficial change in cochlear operation. In addition, the task-dependent MOC activity scaled with auditory task difficulty and varied with task instructions. These results indicate the existence of a dynamic task-dependent interaction between the cochlea and the brain that has the function of optimizing cochlear operation to enhance auditory perceptual accuracy in noisy acoustic environments.

Currently available housing in the Arctic is limited to solutions that have been adapted from designs for less severe climates. This thesis has developed a new manner of residential construction designed specifically for the Arctic climate and culture. The system invented ensures a variety of building options for traditional cultural requirements, while also improving on the level of amenity expected of contemporary dwellings. It has developed a sustainable and responsible building system that represents definite and quantifiable improvements through the use of appropriate technologies.

Abstract:
A full nonlinear finite element P185/70R14 passenger car radial-ply tire model was developed and run on a 1.7-meter-diameter spinning test drum. The virtual tire/drum/cleat finite element model was constructed and tested using the nonlinear finite element analysis software, PAM-SHOCK. The tire model was constructed in extreme detail with three-dimensional solid, layered membrane, and beam finite elements, incorporating over 18,000 nodes and 24 different types of materials. In addition to the tire model itself, the rim was also included and rotated with the tire, with proper mass and rotational inertial effects. The FFT algorithm was applied to examine the transient response information in the frequency domain. The result showed that this P185/70R14 tire has clear peaks of 84 and 45 Hz transmissibility in the vertical and longitudinal directions. Also the paper presents the prediction of tire standing waves phenomenon, and computer animations of the standing waves phenomenon were carried out for the first time. The effects of different tire inflation pressures and tire axle loadings were investigated with respect to their influences on the formation of standing waves. The parameters adopted in this FEA tire model were validated against experimental work and showed excellent agreement.

Abstract:
The current paper presents an analytical model for the problem of squeezed film damping in micromirrors considering the bending of the supporting torsion microbeams. At the first the nonlinear Reynolds equation governing the behavior of the squeezed gas underneath the mirror is linearized. The resulting linearized equation is then nondimensionalized and analytically solved for two cases of the infinitesimal and finite tiling angle of the mirror. The obtained pressure distribution from the solution of the Reynolds equation is then utilized for finding the squeezed film damping force and torque applied to the mirror. The results show that in the case of the infinitesimal tilting angle, the squeezed film damping can be modeled with a linear viscous damping in both torsional and lateral directions. It is also shown that when the mirror’s rotation angle is small, with increasing the length of the mirror, the damping force and damping torque are increased. For the case of the finite tilting angle it was observed that the applied damping torque highly depends on the tilting angle of the mirror as well as the ratio of its vertical to angular velocity and as a result the effect of the vertical velocity of the mirror on the squeezed film damping force and torque applied to the mirror cannot be simply neglected. The results of this paper can be used for accurate dynamical modeling of the micromirrors under the effect of the squeezed film damping.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to study the impact of public policies and uncontrollable (exogenous) variables as well as optimal vehicle design on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the US transportation sector. The overall model is divided into the government model and an enterprise model. To examine the effect of GHG emissions and exogenous variables, the optimization model includes public policy, exogenous variables, and a market mix focusing on the GHG effects of four different types of vehicles, 1) gasoline-based 2) gasoline-electric hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs), 3) battery-electric (BEVs) and 4) fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs). The public policies taken into consideration are infrastructure investments for hydrogen fueling stations and subsidies for purchasing AFVs. An exogenous variable taken into consideration are gasoline prices. For each selection of public policy and exogenous variables in the government model, the enterprise model finds the optimum vehicle design that maximizes profit and updates the market mix, from which the government model can estimate GHG emissions for that selection and can choose a public policy accordingly to produce a desired effect. This paper demonstrates the model using FCV design as an illustrative example.

In ASME 2012 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Many structural applications of adhesive joints experience vibration loads. The dynamic loads due to vibration motions are therefore one of the primary causes for structural damage, especially when the outside cyclic stir vibration frequency is adjacent to the natural frequencies of the adhesive joint frame. This is so called the vibration fatigue. In this paper, the fatigue behavior of adhesively bonded single lap joint (SLP) subject mainly to normal stresses induced by vibration excitations is investigated. Combining with static tests, the NI PXI-1045 vibration measurement and analysis system are used to analyze the effect of vibration loading on the fundamental modal frequency with long-term fatigue cycle. Furthermore, a virtual fatigue analysis approach for the fatigue damage prediction of adhesive joints subject to vibration loads is performed in this study. It is found that the joint stiffness decreases with the cyclic durations under which the vibration loads are applied. As a result, a stable decrease of the fundamental resonance frequency of the joint structure is observed during the tests. The experimental data demonstrate a significant correlation between the shear strength of adhesive joints and the vibration cycling time. A gradual decrease in the shear strength with increasing load cycles is seen in vibration fatigue, the maximum shear strength of adhesively bonded joints drops about 12% after 1.35e8 cycles. Based on the test data, a new approach called virtual fatigue analysis modeling (VFAM) is proposed for the fatigue damage of the adhesive joints under vibration loads. The VFAM shows that the fatigue damage occurs first at the end of the overlap area of the adhesive layer.

Abstract:
The present work sets the basis for the development of a systematic eco-sustainable computer aided design procedure. During years modules for the specific design of all phases of a product life-cycle have been developed: manufacturing, assembly, reliability, maintainability, resilience, disassembly, end-of-use, etc. This work instead places itself in a broader context of “Design for ecology”. It means to overcome the limits of a classic design process such as “Design for X”, through an approach that makes the designer aware of the consequences that each design modification (to the geometry, the material or the manufacturing process) determines on the environmental impact of the product entire life-cycle. This work proposes a method of integrated management of (1)virtual prototyping software (such as structural optimization, FEM and CAD), (2) function modelling methodology and (3) LCA tools. It is mainly based on the configuration of structural optimization strategies especially conceived to obtain lighter and more compact products, therefore, more eco-sustainable. The method, due to the nature of the instruments it employs, can be applied only to products that can be modelled in a CAD environment. The article, in particular, shows how to articulate the workflow between virtual prototyping and LCA tools. A case study regarding a moped rim is used to explain the procedure while software implementation is still underway.

"Full-Coverage Film Cooling: Film Effectiveness and Heat Transfer Coefficients for Dense Hole Arrays at Different Hole Angles, Contraction Ratios, and Blowing Ratios." In ASME Turbo Expo 2012: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2012-70014.

Full text
Abstract:
Experimental results are presented for a full coverage film cooling arrangement which simulates a portion of a gas turbine engine, with appropriate streamwise static pressure gradient. The test surface utilizes varying blowing ratio along the length of the contraction passage which contains the cooling hole arrangement. For the different experimental conditions examined, film cooling holes are sharp-edged and streamwise inclined either at 20° or 30° with respect to the liner surface. The film cooling holes in adjacent streamwise rows are staggered with respect to each other. Data are provided for turbulent film cooling, contraction ratios of 1, 3, 4, and 5, blowing ratios (at the test section entrance) of 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0, coolant Reynolds numbers Refc of 10,000 to 12,000, freestream temperatures from 75°C to 115°C, a film hole diameter of 7 mm, and density ratios from 1.15 to 1.25. Non-dimensional streamwise and spanwise film cooling hole spacings, X/D and Y/D, are 6, and 5, respectively. When the streamwise hole inclination angle is 20°, spatially-averaged and line-averaged adiabatic effectiveness values at each x/D location are about the same as the contraction ratio varies between 1, 3, and 4, with slightly higher values at each x/D location when the contraction ratio Cr is 5. For each contraction ratio, there is a slight increase in effectiveness when the blowing ratio is increased from 2.0 to 5.0 but there is no further substantial improvement when the blowing ratio is increased to 10.0. Overall, line-averaged and spatially-averaged adiabatic film effectiveness data, and spatially-averaged heat transfer coefficient data are described as they are affected by contraction ratio, blowing ratio, hole angle α, and streamwise location x/D. For example, when α = 20°, the detrimental effects of mainstream acceleration are apparent since heat transfer coefficients for contraction ratios Cr of 3 and 5 are often higher than values for Cr = 1, especially for x/D > 100.

Full text
Abstract:
The degradation process of Ni-base superalloy CM247LC was investigated experimentally under the creep loading at 900°C. The initial excellent high-temperature strength of this alloy is attributed to its micro texture, the fine binary phase such as cuboidal γ’ (Ni3Al) precipitates orderly dispersed in the γ matrix (Ni-rich matrix). However, it was observed that γ’ precipitates started to coarse perpendicular to the applied uniaxial load direction during high temperature creep loading. The disappearance of the strengthened micro texture caused the acceleration of the crack growth along the phase boundaries of the layered texture and seriously degrades the strength of this material. Therefore, not only the outlook of micro texture but also the changes of the atomic configuration and atomic concentration which were based on the atomic diffusion behavior was investigated for the further explication of rafting mechanism more in detail. It was found that the distribution of Image Quality (IQ) value which was obtained from EBSD analysis monotonically shifted to lower values and the full width of half maximum became wider as the creep loading time increased. This degradation of the order of atomic alignment indicated that lattice defects density increased and ordered superlattice structure (Ll2 structure) became disordered. In addition, the initial periodic distributions of component elements which corresponded to the fine periodic alignment of the γ and γ’ phases also disappeared and the concentration of each element became uniform even though both the γ and γ’ phases still remained even after rafting. The observed creep damage of CM247LC was, therefore, dominated by the degradation of the order of atomic arrangement, and this degradation was attributed to the strain-induced atomic diffusion of component elements. It is very important, therefore, to suppress this strain-induced acceleration of atomic diffusion in this alloy by modifying the microstructure of this alloy.

Abstract:
From 2000–2015, thirty-two fatalities occurred due to collisions involving mobile equipment in underground coal mining in the United States. Studies have shown that proximity detection systems (PDS) can be a potential mitigation strategy for this type of accident. However, the effectiveness of this approach for mobile equipment has yet to be fully studied or validated. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the causal factors of this type of fatality. Fatal accident reports from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database provided details to analyze and determine causal factors and to evaluate whether a PDS may have been a preventive factor in each accident. NIOSH researchers concluded that PDSs used in underground coal mines on mobile equipment which are designed to detect a miner, provide warning to the operator and other miners, and automatically stop the machine before a miner is hit may have helped to prevent 25 of the 32 or 78% of the accidents.
