Abstract:

Williamson, Christopher James. "The impacts of ocean acidification on calcifying macroalgae." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/73409/.

Full text
Abstract:
The ecophysiology of calcified macroalgal species of the genera Corallina (C. officinalis and C. caespitosa) and Ellisolandia (E. elongata) (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) was examined in intertidal rock pools of the NE Atlantic, to facilitate predictions of ocean-acidification and warming impacts on these ecosystem engineers. An initial phylogenetic study highlighted significant cryptic diversity within the genus Corallina, and demonstrated that C. officinalis is restricted predominantly to the North Atlantic, while the recently established C. caespitosa shows a cosmopolitan distribution. Three subsequent studies were performed across the NE Atlantic (Iceland to northern Spain) to examine (i) the production, respiration, calcification and growth of Corallina in relation to irradiance, water temperature, and carbonate chemistry; (ii) the photoacclimation and photoregulation strategies of Corallina and Ellisolandia; and (iii) the recent-past (1850 – 2010) and present-day skeletal mineralogy (Mg/Ca ratios) of Corallina and Ellisolandia and its relationship to sea surface temperature. Data demonstrated that species currently experience significant seasonal and tidal fluctuations in abiotic conditions that may be important when considering future responses to ocean-acidification and climate-change. Seasonality in production, calcification and growth were demonstrated, with decreasing growth observed with increasing latitude. Photoacclimation to allow maximal light utilisation during winter periods, and photoregulation via nonphotochemical quenching were highlighted as important in allowing Corallina and Ellisolandia to maintain maximal productivity while controlling for photo-stress. Seasonal cycles in skeletal Mg incorporation were demonstrated with strong relation to sea surface temperature, though no significant change in skeletal mineralogy was evident since pre-industrial times. Taken together, data indicated that Corallina and Ellisolandia have the potential to survive under future ocean-acidification and warming conditions, though loss of species at high latitudes and shifts in the relative abundances of species across the region is likely to be evident, with overall range contraction predicted for C. officinalis due to both warming and ocean-acidification impacts.

Raynsford, Juliet. "A critical ethnographic case study exploring creativity, voice and agency in a school for pupils with physical, learning and additional needs." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/73404/.

Full text
Abstract:
The inquiry is set in a medium sized primary school for children aged between 2 – 11 years old with physical, learning and additional needs. The study is relevant to those interested in inclusive research, creativity and the use of kinesthetic research methods. This inquiry’s fieldwork took place over a eighteen month period during which a major reappraisal of the role of creativity within school culture was undertaken. The focus of this thesis is exploring how changes to pedagogical practice and the aesthetic design of the school environment affected pedagogic relations within sessions designated as creative. As a critical ethnographic case study approach is adopted an emphasis is placed upon understanding the particularity and complexity of the single case and, therefore, the thesis is duly cautious in how it generalizes its findings. As is traditional of an ethnographic inquiry this thesis is rooted in thick description accompanied by continual processes of reflection and reflexivity. This process was adopted in order to allow the researcher to identify and interrogate the multiple and diverse lines of inquiry that arose. The thesis concludes by reflecting upon how understanding of creativity and inclusion can be seen to have changed within this particular school culture over the duration of the inquiry. It also provides a summary of how the school’s relationship with the concept of creativity has evolved and continues to evolve. The methodological strengths and limitations of the research are identified and suggestions are made regarding possible future areas of inquiry.

Martini, Giulia <1987&gt. "CAD Aspects on Isogeometric Analysis and Hybrid Domains." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/7340/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the result of a Ph.D. program in Alto Apprendistato carried out at the Dipartimento di Informatica - Scienza e Ingegneria (DISI) of the University of Bologna and at the company devDept Software. With regard to the professional side of my Individual Training Project, I developed technical and scientific skills in 3D geometry of curves and surfaces, CAD, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Regarding the academic side, I investigated CAD aspects in the field of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) on both single and hybrid multipatch physical domains. Simulations are performed in classical FEA systems, which require the conversion of designs, made by CAD systems, into finite element meshes. IGA is a new approach that aims to unify the worlds of CAD and FEA by using the same geometry for analysis as what is used for modeling. That is, the same set of basis functions are adopted both to describe the computational geometry in the CAD tool, and to span the solution space for FEA. The traditional FEA pipeline works on meshes and the most advanced IGA systems work on NURBS or T-spline geometries. Hybrid geometric models (i.e., models in which mesh and NURBS entities coexist), are an emergent way to represent a solid object, but in most CAD systems mesh and NURBS geometries cannot interact with each other, and conversions to a common representation are often needed. In this thesis, we investigate how IGA can be applied on 2D and 3D hybrid models made by both mesh and NURBS entities without requiring laborious and time consuming conversion processes.

McGarty, Arlene Marie. "Understanding and validating accelerometry as a measure of physical activity in children with intellectual disabilities." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7340/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Physical activity in children with intellectual disabilities is a neglected area of study, which is most apparent in relation to physical activity measurement research. Although objective measures, specifically accelerometers, are widely used in research involving children with intellectual disabilities, existing research is based on measurement methods and data interpretation techniques generalised from typically developing children. However, due to physiological and biomechanical differences between these populations, questions have been raised in the existing literature on the validity of generalising data interpretation techniques from typically developing children to children with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, there is a need to conduct population-specific measurement research for children with intellectual disabilities and develop valid methods to interpret accelerometer data, which will increase our understanding of physical activity in this population. Methods Study 1: A systematic review was initially conducted to increase the knowledge base on how accelerometers were used within existing physical activity research involving children with intellectual disabilities and to identify important areas for future research. A systematic search strategy was used to identify relevant articles which used accelerometry-based monitors to quantify activity levels in ambulatory children with intellectual disabilities. Based on best practice guidelines, a novel form was developed to extract data based on 17 research components of accelerometer use. Accelerometer use in relation to best practice guidelines was calculated using percentage scores on a study-by-study and component-by-component basis. Study 2: To investigate the effect of data interpretation methods on the estimation of physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities, a secondary data analysis was conducted. Nine existing sets of child-specific ActiGraph intensity cut points were applied to accelerometer data collected from 10 children with intellectual disabilities during an activity session. Four one-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to examine differences in estimated time spent in sedentary, moderate, vigorous, and moderate to vigorous intensity activity. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni adjustments were additionally used to identify where significant differences occurred. Study 3: The feasibility on a laboratory-based calibration protocol developed for typically developing children was investigated in children with intellectual disabilities. Specifically, the feasibility of activities, measurements, and recruitment was investigated. Five children with intellectual disabilities and five typically developing children participated in 14 treadmill-based and free-living activities. In addition, resting energy expenditure was measured and a treadmill-based graded exercise test was used to assess cardiorespiratory fitness. Breath-by-breath respiratory gas exchange and accelerometry were continually measured during all activities. Feasibility was assessed using observations, activity completion rates, and respiratory data. Study 4: Thirty-six children with intellectual disabilities participated in a semi-structured school-based physical activity session to calibrate accelerometry for the estimation of physical activity intensity. Participants wore a hip-mounted ActiGraph wGT3X+ accelerometer, with direct observation (SOFIT) used as the criterion measure. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were conducted to determine the optimal accelerometer cut points for sedentary, moderate, and vigorous intensity physical activity. Study 5: To cross-validate the calibrated cut points and compare classification accuracy with existing cut points developed in typically developing children, a sub-sample of 14 children with intellectual disabilities who participated in the school-based sessions, as described in Study 4, were included in this study. To examine the validity, classification agreement was investigated between the criterion measure of SOFIT and each set of cut points using sensitivity, specificity, total agreement, and Cohen’s kappa scores. Results Study 1: Ten full text articles were included in this review. The percentage of review criteria met ranged from 12%−47%. Various methods of accelerometer use were reported, with most use decisions not based on population-specific research. A lack of measurement research, specifically the calibration/validation of accelerometers for children with intellectual disabilities, is limiting the ability of researchers to make appropriate and valid accelerometer use decisions. Study 2: The choice of cut points had significant and clinically meaningful effects on the estimation of physical activity intensity and sedentary behaviour. For the 71-minute session, estimations for time spent in each intensity between cut points ranged from: sedentary = 9.50 (± 4.97) to 31.90 (± 6.77) minutes; moderate = 8.10 (± 4.07) to 40.40 (± 5.74) minutes; vigorous = 0.00 (± .00) to 17.40 (± 6.54) minutes; and moderate to vigorous = 8.80 (± 4.64) to 46.50 (± 6.02) minutes. Study 3: All typically developing participants and one participant with intellectual disabilities completed the protocol. No participant met the maximal criteria for the graded exercise test or attained a steady state during the resting measurements. Limitations were identified with the usability of respiratory gas exchange equipment and the validity of measurements. The school-based recruitment strategy was not effective, with a participation rate of 6%. Therefore, a laboratory-based calibration protocol was not feasible for children with intellectual disabilities. Study 4: The optimal vertical axis cut points (cpm) were ≤ 507 (sedentary), 1008−2300 (moderate), and ≥ 2301 (vigorous). Sensitivity scores ranged from 81−88%, specificity 81−85%, and AUC .87−.94. The optimal vector magnitude cut points (cpm) were ≤ 1863 (sedentary), ≥ 2610 (moderate) and ≥ 4215 (vigorous). Sensitivity scores ranged from 80−86%, specificity 77−82%, and AUC .86−.92. Therefore, the vertical axis cut points provide a higher level of accuracy in comparison to the vector magnitude cut points. Study 5: Substantial to excellent classification agreement was found for the calibrated cut points. The calibrated sedentary cut point (ĸ =.66) provided comparable classification agreement with existing cut points (ĸ =.55−.67). However, the existing moderate and vigorous cut points demonstrated low sensitivity (0.33−33.33% and 1.33−53.00%, respectively) and disproportionately high specificity (75.44−.98.12% and 94.61−100.00%, respectively), indicating that cut points developed in typically developing children are too high to accurately classify physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities. Conclusions The studies reported in this thesis are the first to calibrate and validate accelerometry for the estimation of physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities. In comparison with typically developing children, children with intellectual disabilities require lower cut points for the classification of moderate and vigorous intensity activity. Therefore, generalising existing cut points to children with intellectual disabilities will underestimate physical activity and introduce systematic measurement error, which could be a contributing factor to the low levels of physical activity reported for children with intellectual disabilities in previous research.

Fakandu, Bala Mohammed. "Vented gas explosions." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7340/.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation generated new experimental data on premixed gas/air vented explosions. A small (0.01 m3) and medium scale (0.2 m3) cylindrical vessels were used with L/D of 2.8 and 2 respectively, with range of vent area coefficients Kv of 2.7-21.7. The initial set of experiments considered free venting, so that the flame propagation during the venting process was laminar and also the short distance of the vessels would reduce the effects of flame self-accelleration. Covered vents were later used with vent static burst pressure Pstat from 35 to 450mb in the 10L vessel. Different gas mixtures were used throughout this work including methane-air (10%), propane-air (4 and 4.5%), ethylene-air (6.5 and 7.5%), and hydrogen-air (30 and 40%) gas mixtures. The ignition position at the far end opposite the vent and central location mid-way the length of the vessels were compared. Current venting guidance is based on experimental vented explosions with central ignition, but this work shows that end ignition opposite the vent is the worst case. The current design procedures for the protection of explosions using venting is shown to be inadequate for hydrogen-air explosions. New data has been presented which indicates that for hydrogen explosions, the vent flow behaves differently as compared to other gas mixtures investigated. Hence, the need for more research in hydrogen-air mixtures in order to have better understanding of hydrogen venting process. Experimental data from the current work also shows that multiple vents and vent shapes have significant effects on explosion overpressure and flame speeds. This is contrary to the assumption of the current venting standards. The effect of static burst pressure on explosion venting was shown to be quite different to that in the design standards, which is supported by other work in larger vessels. Other aspects of vent design that the standards say are not important were shown to be significant: the number of vents, the position of the vent, the shape of the vent, the ignition position. Laminar flame venting theory was shown to be a good predictor of the results and those from the literature where larger vessels were used.

Alrashidi, Faleh M. F. E. "Comparison of the performance of Islamic mutual funds vs. ethical and conventional mutual funds." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7340/.

Abstract:
Mutual funds are one of the key contributors to the globalisation of financial markets and one of the main sources of capital flows to emerging economies. This study explores and measures the performance of global Islamic mutual funds through an econometric analysis. Specifically, this study conducted an empirical comparison of performances between Islamic, ethical, and conventional mutual funds using market indexes as benchmarks. In furthering the analyses, this study also explored the ‘Ramadan Effect’ and another comparison/or causality test between Islamic mutual funds and oil prices in the short/long run. Statistical techniques were used in analysing monthly net asset value (NAV), management fee, and Dow Jones Islamic market index (DJIMI), S&P 500 Index, FTSE4Good Global Index, MSCI AC World Index and oil prices include (i) the augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Phillips-Perron (PP) test; (ii) Granger causality; (iii) cointegration, and (iv)the Generalized Method of Moments Regression. Findings of the study demonstrate that oil price did not cause Islamic mutual fund’s performance during the period covered, while Islamic mutual fund’s performance causes oil prices. Since demand and supply equilibrium on oil is unpredictable and oil is considered both as an investment commodity and a fuel, the stock market leads oil prices. Results also show that there is no significant difference between the performance of Islamic mutual funds and those of ethical and conventional mutual funds and between the Islamic mutual funds and the well-known Islamic indices during the whole period or during the bullish or bearish periods.

In an effort to enable supply chain visibility for Intel products, the Customer Unit Level Traceability (ULT) Program was formed to help extend Intel's ULT capability to the customer level. Increased traceability of Intel products could potentially lead customers to realize some of the same benefits, such as improved issue management and security, as other industries already do. Interviewing customers regarding their perspectives on ULT and interest in pilot collaboration engagements with Intel allowed the program to realize that customer adoption would prove to be challenging. By characterizing the program with Everett M. Roger's Innovation Adoption Curve and Geoffrey A. Moore's Chasm, it was also discovered that the pragmatic early majority could not be expected to act as visionary innovators or early adopters and help the program reach a critical mass of customers with its existing strategy. However, the program may evolve to do so or at least reach its target customers by modifying the implementation plan. Rather than extending the ULT capability to customers as a risk mitigation strategy, Intel can effectively prepare a response for when inflection points occur and motivate customer ULT adoption. The timing of the adoption is largely sensitive to when customers are ready to bring on this sort of change and understanding what factors will cause this need. Ultimately, this project lends itself to the longer term, ideal state of having end-to-end traceability of Intel products along the supply chain whereby additional improvements in areas of quality and manufacturing can be discovered.

In 2007 Dell began selling through the retail channel. Five years later, the retail channel is still in the early stages relative to competitors and is growing rapidly. Short product lifecycles, long lead times and a high mix of configurations create a complex supply chain. Dell had decided to introduce a Build to Plan fulfillment strategy. Dell has been known for its direct consumer strategy and the retail channel adds an additional stage in the supply chain between Dell and the end consumer. This change impacts the visibility of true demand, resulting in the bullwhip effect. Better collaborative processes such as S&OP and CPFR can improve the channel forecast accuracy, inventory levels, on time delivery, and sales revenue. The personal computer industry has become commoditized; promotions and price have a high impact on the end consumer's purchase decision. Long lead times and high price fluctuation increase uncertainty. Forecasting at a SKU level is challenging and inaccurate. An aggregated approach can reduce the variability and postpone the customization. Forecast accuracy is a key metric that can be used to improve the supply chain. To improve that metric, the appropriate forecast must be tracked and compared to the actual sales. A significant portion of any new planning process will need to account for updated software tools. These tools can help Dell's demand planners facilitate weekly conversations with retailers and ensure more accurate tracking of appropriate demand signals for forecasting. The current product portfolio that allows high flexibility to retailers does not fit the low margins of the product. Demand segmentation can identify which SKU have high volatility and offer a different supply chain strategy for those with low volumes, or spotlight high costs in offering those SKU.

Amgen is a biotechnology company with manufacturing plants throughout the world. New manufacturing technologies are constantly being developed and implemented in order to address cost, quality, regulation, and competitive forces. However, deciding on the technologies to implement is difficult because there is much uncertainty and the regulatory constraints of old products need to be balanced with the need of manufacturing flexibility for new products. Interviews were conducted with executives at Amgen and other biotechnology companies to understand their current decision-making processes and no gold-standard decision-making process emerged. The current process at Amgen is a business case along with net present value (NPV). However, the process has been found to be somewhat biased and decisions are often made on gut-instinct and excitement. In addition, the business case often fails to capture some of the more subjective, intangible elements of new technologies. Therefore, a technology decision-making framework based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is introduced. The AHP is an objective, group decision-making approach. For usability and sustainability, commercial software from Expert Choice was used in case studies to validate AHP as a decisionmaking approach within Amgen. One case study looked at options to upgrade a clinical manufacturing facility. An AHP model was analyzed simultaneously with a typical business case and NPV analysis. The AHP model allowed management to understand the more subjective areas where the options differed and therefore was a suitable approach that added value. Another case study was performed looking at choosing a standardized drug substance container where five previous analyses had been performed, but no decision made. The AHP model allowed the different criteria to be combined in one model with cross-functional input so that management could make a holistic decision. The AHP approach had many benefits and using commercial software made the process easier for users and allowed for a more sustainaible process within Amgen.

In the U.S. news, healthcare related headlines frequent the covers of newspapers and make regular primetime news appearances and the U.S. is not alone. The world is awakening to a need for more equal access to healthcare for its citizens and governments believe this equality will be achieved through tighter regulation in huge healthcare markets such as the pharmaceutical industry. To sustain shareholder value, as a result of these changing price structures, Novartis sees a need to reassess its sourcing and procurement strategies, assessing the feasibility of value based procurement, through staged implementation. While all procurement organizations tend to focus on maximizing cost savings for a company, this approach can often alienate suppliers and leave untapped value on the table. This additional value can be captured through long-term supplier development and collaborative work to utilize a supplier's knowledge, while maximizing the value proposition both for the company and the suppliers. For this early research, there was a focus on packaging equipment at pharmaceutical production facilities. The goal has been to understand the types of savings which could be achieved by purchasing extending its measure of success beyond price reduction to include value, such as through enabling increased quality or flexibility. As a company formed from many individual companies with a myriad procurement maturity, Novartis has an extended geographic and physical footprint which requires many disjointed groups to come together to produce products. This project has focused on developing a new procurement strategy to help optimize and standardize the procurement of Novartis's packaging lines at the manufacturing facilities, enabling them to work more cohesively to deliver greater benefit to the company. Additionally, following a successful pilot of the proposed sourcing practices in the packaging equipment space could be replicated in other category spaces both in the Pharmaceutical division and throughout Novartis's other six divisions. Novartis will continue to develop and produce drugs, as the predecessor companies have excelled in doing for more than a hundred years but it should also realize what expertise should be core and where others outside of the company excel.

Today, approximately 90% of Intel notebook processors are packaged in PGA (Pin Grid Array) and 10% are packaged in BGA (Ball Grid Array). Intel has recently made a decision to transform the notebook industry by creating a new system size category called Ultrabook TM . In order to create such a thin form factor, PGA (Pin Grid Array) CPUs must now be offered as BGA (Ball Grid Array) CPUs to reduce the height of one of the taller items of the system. With the increased number of Ultrabooks [TM] being offered, the overall volume of BGA CPUs shipped by Intel is expected to increase. BGA CPUs can be shipped in one of two mediums: tape and reel or trays. By making tape and reel available, customers would be able to utilize the benefit of a more efficient pick and place process on their surface mount technology (SMT) lines compared to when using trays. However, from Intel's standpoint, BGA CPUs have a very high product mix, and shipping BGA CPUs in trays allows Intel to ship in smaller order quantities to customers. Intel currently ships its BGA CPUs in trays. Because BGA processors used in Ultrabook m and other systems will become the majority of processor volume, some customers have made a request to have BGA CPUs delivered in tape and reel in addition to trays. The objective of the thesis is to determine if packaging CPUs in tape and reel in conjunction with tray packaging will improve overall CPU supply chain performance. Based on the analysis, we conclude that tape and reel should not be offered due to the minimal savings received by its ODM customers, and the expense that would be incurred by Intel based on current market conditions. Key drivers that influence this decision on the Intel side include SKU management issues, lack of shipping efficiency, and capital equipment purchase costs. From the customer point of view, it was identified that the request came from ODM Surface Mount Technology line managers and did not take into consideration procurement or inventory holding issues.

Novartis International A.G. is well known for their effective research and development of life-changing pharmaceuticals, and in 2006, Novartis bought Chiron Corporation, thereby diversifying their portfolio with a vaccines and diagnostics division. Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics (NV&D) is dedicated to producing vaccines and diagnostics tools at the highest quality and lowest cost. This thesis is from a six-month internship that explores the Novartis Vaccine's Holly Springs, North Carolina flu-cell culture facility to assist management in better understanding the Novartis' Innovation, Quality, and Productive (IQP) system on the organization. This particular site employs approximately 350 full-time individuals and 150 contractors. The Holly Springs' facility is designed to manufacture and fill 50 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccine, and 150 million doses in the event of a pandemic (with the help of a dose sparing adjuvant). All processes, from incoming raw materials to syringe fill and finish, must be conducted at this site in order to meet a United States mandate for emergency readiness in the event of a pandemic. The facility is well on its way to finalizing the manufacturing process, installing all the production equipment, and hiring staff, however, all start ups experience difficulties and this is no different from Novartis. The site, in particular is experiencing many difficulties in their raw material release process. . NV&D management recognized the need to implement their IQP project improvement system to address the disruptions that are impacting their scheduled readiness plan. [Figure 1 displayed] Figure 1: Causal Feedback Loop of Process Improvement on Process Performance] The approach for this project and thesis will be a mix of Novartis' IQP department, quality management, and technical operations methodologies in order to fully understand the current state of the raw material release process and identify gaps within the process. Combining the raw material release project with the theories of system dynamics, Novartis can better understand the impact of their Innovation, Quality, and Productive system at varying organizational levels. The Figure to the right demonstrates the impact of process improvement on overall process performance.

Mobile device companies typically manage supply and pricing for components that are used in production by their Vertical Integrators (VIs). By controlling the component pricing and supply chain, mobile device companies are able to increase their pricing and supply chain leverage over smaller component suppliers. Maintaining this leverage is crucial in ensuring that mobile device companies can mass-produce high quality products at efficient costs. However these advantages require that companies incur additional operational expenses associated with supply chain management. To reduce costs and improve lead times, OEM companies should consider having 1st Tier suppliers directly manage 2 nd Tier suppliers. This project will investigate VI capabilities to manage quality, design, and cost across the entire range of hardware used in Nokia phones. Alternatively, we will also identify specific program and commodity areas which may benefit from having a more integrated supply chain. We will also investigate how Nokia can reduce supply chain management costs to meet future business needs related to cash flow.' By analyzing Nokia's historical supply chain performance, we will develop a model to quantify Nokia's "level of control" over its supply chain. We define this "level of control" in terms of the Operational Expenses and Investment which Nokia incurs in managing its supply chain. With this model, we will assess how future business constraints will affect Nokia's supply chain control. By evaluating key parameters which influence supply chain control, we can recommend how Nokia can allocate control across its supply chain. Finally, we will apply this model to recommend how Nokia should outsource supply chain management responsibility.

Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics operates a centralized equipment cleaning and preparation suite at a vaccine production facility in Marburg, Germany. The ~100 pieces of multi-use stainless steel, glass, and plastic equipment prepared at this centralized pretreatment suite all need to be disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, sterilized, shipped, and tracked. This highly complex cycle is problematic because of the coordination cost, possibility of assembly errors, and lack of operational flexibility. Additionally, the multi-use assemblies were designed as long as 20 years ago, and newer, more reliable alternatives exist. The goal of this project is to evaluate the hypothesis that replacing multi-use assemblies with single-use assemblies will reduce production risk and costs of goods sold of vaccines by reducing operational complexity. To understand the impact of adopting single-use assemblies, the one-time cost of switching (e.g. regulatory filings, validation studies, operational costs) are weighted against the potential for operational savings and risk reduction or transfer to vendors. The current-state variable costs and risks are evaluated with a cost model that accounts for variable equipment cost, operator cost, autoclave cost, and washer costs. Future state variable costs are determined through a request for proposal ("RFP") process with vendors. Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics had previously conducted failure mode and effect analyses ("FMEA's"), and the critical and potentially critical risks affected by adopting single-use assemblies were reassessed. It is possible to reduce the complexity of pretreatment operations with single-use assemblies. Adopting the four of the assemblies studied in this project would reduce the number of components processed in a year by 40% and the number of unique components by 10%. Many critical or potentially critical risks, such as labeling, assembly, sterilization, transportation, and storage of assemblies will be transferred to third-party vendors. Because these vendors specialize in the production of single-use assemblies, they can invest in more costly capital equipment and processes such as higher class clean rooms and gamma sterilization. Some single-use assemblies will have a lower variable operating cost, while others will increase operating costs. Thus, new assemblies fall into three categories in a decision making framework: 1) Reduced risk and cost, 2) Pay for risk reduction, and 3) Continue with current state. Assemblies in categories 1 and 2 should be modernized from multi-use to single-use, while assemblies in category 3 should remain multi-use.

This project investigates the impact that customer allocations have on key cost and service indicators at Intel Corporation. Allocations provide a method to fill orders during constrained supply, when total demand for a given product exceeds available supply. It is hypothesized that allocations increase inventory levels since customers may not always take the supply that is reserved for them in allocations. Also, if the total number of allocation groupings could be reduced, it is thought that the total inventory needed to adequately service the same customer base could be reduced due to the increased potential for pooling. To test these hypotheses, historical data on allocations and product shipments were analyzed to assess how much inventory on hand could be attributed to using allocations. A model was built to calculate safety stock using historical allocations data as a demand indicator. Using this model, we simulate how much safety stock would be sufficient to meet expected demand as we reduce the number of allocations groups and pool risk across larger groups of customers. We also interview various supply managers to understand the impact allocations has on headcount, factoring in the geographical differences in managing allocations across a global supply chain. The results suggest that customer allocations are a complex yet necessary process at a large manufacturing firm. A moderate amount of extra inventory is carried since there is no penalty to customers for inflating forecasts, but relative to safety stock already kept on hand it is nominal. Strategically reducing allocations groupings in key product lines that are likely to be significantly constrained can provide a way to operate efficiently with less inventory on hand. Longer term, products can feasibly be taken off allocations when it is determined that supply is healthy enough to do so, but a robust process needs to be in place to handle this.

The federal government has continually increased its spending on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the past decade. Efforts to drive down UAV costs have primarily focused on the physical characteristics of the UAV, such as weight, size, and shape. Due to the saturation of the UAV business in the federal sector, the civilian sector is not as penetrated. Hence, companies see this phenomenon as an opportunity to establish itself as the standard bearer in this sector. This thesis will address how Boeing can establish guidelines for business strategies in UAV offerings to potential clients. The key innovation that will be introduced is a modeling tool that will focus on simulation/trending and sensitivity analysis to help provide some insight into what these guidelines will be. The modeling tool will quantify many of the benefits and costs of the components and features of the production and utilization of UAVs. Other notable recommendations include defining a new data recording process to obtain sets of sample data to validate the results of the modeling tool and streamlining the complexity of additional features and enhancements that will be incorporated in future versions of the modeling tool.

Abstract:
Abstract The main objective of this paperwork is to identify the strengths and vulnerabilities of the gendarmerie type forces in Peace Support Operations. In order to achieve this aim, we applied the existing theory to GNR intervention in East-Timor case study. From the problems described some related questions emerged, for each one of which a hypothesis was formulated. Initially this study lists the theoretical part as the literature review. It begins with the thematic of gendarmerie type forces, Peace Support Operations and the deployment of GNR in the referred theater. Later, during the fieldwork, the focuses was on the East-Timor case study. The information gathering came from questionnaires and interviews. The results are discussed in order to be drawn conclusions. At the end, each hypotheses are checked, answered each derived question. Once this process is done we can answer the central question, fulfilling the investigation main objective. Thus, it is concluded that gendarmerie type forces have several potentialities in Peace Support Operations. However our case study showed some factors that are not associated whit it in theory. One example is the closeness with the Timorese population as a potentiality, and the human resources and logistics limitations, as a vulnerability

Abstract:
The essays in this thesis are concerned to study the potential linkages between Firms' business strategies and how the exploitation of intellectual assets determines the way innovation can help in building competitive advantages and increasing firm value. In particular, I focus on the different strategies employed by firms to exploit the value created by innovation, examining how market uncertainty and complementary assets affect commercialization decisions. The first chapter of the thesis develops a theoretical model that studies the decision to commercialize as an option to invest. The second chapter is an empirical test to find how market uncertainty can affect the likelihood that a disembodied patent will be licensed. Finally the last chapter studies how knowledge spillovers affect the value of patented inventions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Waterboarding, rendition, torture: each of these terms provides deeply negative examples of the mishandling of detainees by various entities of the United States government during the prosecution of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In order to rectify these failures of the various systems within the U.S. Military's detention framework, the Department of Defense (DoD) developed and issued Field Manual 2-22.3 Human Intelligence Collector Operations. This new doctrine has created restrictions that add unnecessary hours to the process of exploiting detainees through tactical interrogation. Due to the autonomous nature of their missions, the significance for U.S. Army Special Forces is immense. Tactical interrogation is a legal, viable, and necessary method of information gathering on the battlefield. FM 2-22.3 has taken away USSF's capability to exploit an immense pool of intelligence that could be critical in the current conflicts. This thesis explores the limitations imposed by current doctrine and discusses changes necessary to provide the skills, training, and legal authorities that will allow Special Forces to use every appropriate resource to be successful on the modern battlefield. Recommendations are provided regarding training and doctrine to provide the proper authorities along with appropriate checks and balances.

This thesis aims to analyze the dichotomy between fact and value. The separation of the merely factual-objective of which is evaluative-subjective is the result of a historical progression based on a number of theories that oppose each other, going back to the clash between Descartes and Hume (rationalism and empiricism). However, this dichotomy is criticized by Hilary Putnam, who defends the existence of an entanglement of facts and values. In this sense, will seek to demonstrate the danger to defend the ideal of a science free of ethical and social values. The second chapter, in order to demonstrate a more tangible way the entanglement between facts and values, is dedicated to an evaluation conducted on the unsustainability of the dichotomy fact - value in the economy. It is proposed to evaluate the work of Amartya Sen, Indian philosopher and economist who has devoted his career to the affirmation of the economy also as a human science that deals with complex ethical factors which can not be reduced simply to numbers and statistics. Sen defends the possibility of a welfare economy and, therefore, proposes a rereading of "classical economics", adding that it would have been an ethical impoverishment due to its overly linked to mathematical reason structure and focus on individual interest. Seeking a solution that would avoid utilitarianism, Sen developed the theory of capabilities, which proposes to consider the interpersonal comparisons of "utility." Thus, we intend to address the issue of the fact-value dichotomy, based on the thought of Putnam and Sen, pointing out the possible consequences that the arguments raised generate for philosophical perception of political science, and notions of reason applicable to normative issues.

Abstract:
Mosquito borne diseases have been a constant scourge across the globe resulting in numerous diseases with debilitating consequences, and also death. To derive trends on population of mosquitoes in an area, trained personnel lay traps, and after collecting trapped specimens, they spend hours under a microscope to inspect each specimen for identifying the actual species and logging it. This is vital, because multiple species of mosquitoes can reside in any area, and the vectors that some of them carry are not the same ones carried by others. The species identification process is naturally laborious, and imposes severe cognitive burden, since sometimes, hundreds of mosquitoes can get trapped. Most importantly, common citizens cannot aid in this task. In this paper, we design a system based on smart-phone images for mosquito species identification, that integrates image processing, feature selection, unsupervised clustering, and support vector machine based algorithm for classification. Results with a total of 101 female mosquito specimens spread across 9 different vector carrying species (that were captured from a real outdoor trap) demonstrate an overall accuracy of 77% in species identification. When implemented as a smart-phone app, the latency and energy consumption were minimal. In terms of practical impact, common citizens can benefit from our system to identify mosquito species by themselves, and also share images to local/ global mosquito control centers. In economically disadvantaged areas across the globe, tools like these can enable novel citizen-science enabled mechanisms to combat spread of mosquitoes.

Abstract:
Global climate change is a real-time problem that presents threats to many species. Climate change can alter ecosystems and may lead to species extinction. Species can respond to climate change by moving to a better environment or adapting. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on several approaches and perspectives to anticipate ecological impacts of climate change. A common strategy uses models to understand how populations respond to different climate scenarios. Ecological models have helped usunderstand population persistence, but they often ignore how populations adapt to environmental stress. Adaptive evolution has been ignored because it was assumed that evolution was too slow to have any effect on ecology. Current research has shown that some populations are able to rapidly adapt to novel environments and this is essential for population persistence. We used a population genomics approach to understand how different precipitation regimes affect the perennial bunchgrass, Pseudoroegneria spicata, in the eastern Idaho sagebrush steppe. Our objective was to determine how genetic diversity changes under manipulated precipitation regimes and whether these changes were consistent with patterns of genetic diversity under natural precipitation regimes. The manipulated precipitation regimes consist of three precipitation treatments: control, drought with 50% ambient precipitation, and irrigation with 150% ambient precipitation. The natural precipitation regimes consist of two treatments: low elevation (drier than the experimental site) and high elevation (wetter). We collected plant tissue to isolate plant DNA and then used sequenced DNA for analyses. We used a hierarchical Bayesian model to estimate genotypes and allele frequencies across all loci. We found that there were low levels of genetic variation across all experimental precipitation treatments. When examining genetic differentiation, we found there was stronger differentiation in the natural precipitation regimes. Our study focuses on the short-term responses to climate to understand how environmental stress influences genetic diversity.

Abstract:
The intention of implementing technology into healthcare practices is to reduce opportunity for errors in the delivery of providing health care. However, errors still occur, and many times are preventable. Configurations of health information technology systems should match clinical workflows to promote usage as intended. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of revised system configurations and use of a blood product transfusion system for the administration of blood products after one year of implementation. The method of heuristic evaluation is a usability engineering method for finding problems in a user interface design with the input of a small workgroup of subject matter experts. The project site had experienced reported incidents of blood product administration error as well as problems with systems communication since the implementation of the blood transfusion system. There were 31 nurse clinical educator staff users of the system who completed a survey evaluation of their perceptions of the blood transfusion system before and after configuration changes. The findings revealed that the mean quality and productivity score after the system configuration occurred was significantly higher than the mean score prior to the system configuration change, t (30) = -7.93, p < .001. The correlation between the one survey was also statistically significant, r = .46, p = .009. This project supports positive social change by reducing the potential for error for system users in the process of the blood administration process through heuristic evaluation through the implementation of changes to the technological system.

Abstract:
It is widely acknowledged that communications and information technologies (C&IT) have revolutionised organisational life. However, although C&I technologies have extensively entered the workplace, in many organisations they seem to be making very little contribution to the achievement of the goals of the organisation. The research that has been focused in this area has suggested that potential users in the organisations are perceived (and often perceive themselves) to have inadequate knowledge and skill to utilise the technologies effectively. It also indicates that the users frequently lack motivation to use the technologies because they feel that the technologies are insufficiently supportive of tasks, which they need to perform. This latter observation appears to be particularly important where the users have the choice as to whether and when they will use the technologies (i. e. they are 'discretionary' users) as is often the case with managers in a non-C&IT focused organisation. Service and an interest in the role of training in this process. As a starting point, a study of previous research work was undertaken which indicated that conventional training was likely to be of limited usefulness in this environment. It also indicated that C&IT based support systems in the workplace were being suggested as a possible The research presented in this thesis started from a perceived need to improve the effective utilisation of the new technologies by managers in the Malaysian Civil supplement to existing conventional training methods. These results were field tested by undertaking a survey of a sample of managers in the Malaysian Civil Service to determine their perception of existing training and to assess the potential acceptability of C&IT based support for their work. The results of the survey confirmed the other research studies by indicating that the existing training, while satisfactory in itself, did not seem particularly relevant to the workplace tasks that the managers needed to carry out. The results also indicated that the knowledge and skill gained through training had frequently been forgotten or lost by the time it was needed in the workplace. Finally, a significant number of the managers who were surveyed indicated that they were interested in `point of need' support and that, although they would prefer that support to come from people, they would be interested in trying a C&IT based system, if one were provided. An examination of the requirements for point of need support indicated that any system must include both information about the usage of the C&I technologies and equipment themselves and about the application of the technologies to the tasks which needed to be performed in the workplace. Given the spatial distribution of the managers and the relatively rapid evolution of the applications that the managers would be expected to use, it was postulated that a fully distributed system with `learning' capabilities would require. To test the principles involved a prototype Web based system was developed and released. Initial feedback has been collected and analysed and suggestions are made for the application of the findings to improving the effectiveness with which managers use communications and information technologies in the workplace.

This study aimed to select the most sustainable irrigation methods able to obtain high water productivity considering economic aspects and water saving criteria for wheat and cotton in NE Syria. The models used are PROASPER for sprinkler, SADREG for surface and MIRRIG for drip irrigation. Multicriteria analysis (MCA) was used to rank a set of design alternatives considering water saving and economic priorities. For wheat, surface and sprinkler systems were applied. For cotton surface, sprinkler and drip methods were compared. All combinations were analysed for full and deficit irrigation. Results for cotton show that drip irrigation is better than graded furrows for water saving but not a good option for economic priority unless the yield price increases. Sprinkler systems for cotton are rarely advantageous. For wheat, sprinkler systems are better than borders from water savings perspectives, showing an increased water productivity, as well as in economic terms leading to higher farmer’s income. MCA proved to be a very useful tool in a water scarce region to select the most appropriate irrigation systems considering the users preferences.

Fox, Nicolette. "Here comes the sun : the evolution of a prosuming project within a social housing estate." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2018. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/73405/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the research question of how and why ‘prosuming' solar electricity evolves over time among social housing tenants with prepayment electricity meters. Prosuming is defined here as deliberately and simultaneously producing and consuming electricity. Using a Social Practice Theory framework, but also drawing on Time Geography, the thesis analyses prosuming as a ‘project'. This sees practitioners actively mobilising elements (meanings, skills and materials), as well as orchestrating everyday practices (i.e. laundering) and projects (i.e. 'Feeding-the-Meter') to the fulfilment of the 'Prosuming Project'. The overarching research question is ‘How and why does prosuming evolve for social housing tenants?' It is broken down into four subsidiary questions that firstly explore the period before solar panels, and then the three stages of the conceptual framework – adopting, establishing and committing to the Prosuming Project. The first question addresses how householders use electricity prior to the installation of solar panels and the role of two dominant, institutional projects: 'Feeding-the-Meter' and 'Maintaining-Family-Routines'. The second examines the features of households adopting the Prosuming Project and the need to mobilise a set of elements from within a disadvantaged community. The third question explores how the establishing phase is marked by a complex relationship between prosuming as a secondary, voluntary project, and dominant, institutional projects. This is further complicated by the role of synchronicity, finances and the changing seasons. The final subsidiary question addresses how a new vocabulary of elements emerged as practitioners committed to the Prosuming Project. It also explores how a transformative process took place both for practitioner and the project itself. In particular it highlights the potential in the future for an Energy Shifting, Storing, Saving & Sharing Project that could support disadvantaged communities, if they are able to mobilise the elements they need to perform it. This case study adopts an in-depth qualitative methodology, using serial interviews with seven households over ten months. The interviewees live in an area that in 2010 was ranked as within the ten percent most deprived in England, according to English Indices of Deprivation (DCLG). The research explores their lived experiences of the Prosuming Project. The thesis focuses on UK social housing tenants, who appear not to have been researched before for a prosuming-focused, social practice study. This enables the research to contribute to topical debates about future sustainability ‘winners and losers'. It also offers methodological insights into undertaking a social practice case study that explored lived experiences within a disadvantaged community. The research provides insights into how prosuming solar power is embedded in everyday life: how it can be supported or challenged by dominant projects, and how householders may develop new skills, understandings, and ways of using materials as their performances evolve.

Based on the work of the Brazilian philosoper, Cláudio Henrique de Lima Vaz, Philosophical Anthropology I and II, and motivated by the aporia many times millennial about what is the man, the successive lines trace the dialetic path proposed by the author in order to comprehend the categorial construction which allows its philosophical comprehension about the concept of person. The first step will be to revisit rememoratively the authors of bigger influence in the current philosophical thinking, who are Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Hegel. Posteriorly, a first immersion is done in the “vaziana” work, analyzing the logic and dialetal basis of his proposal of sistematic discourse, which is necessary to comprehend his reflexive methodology. Lastly, there is the categorial path through a double methodologic reading, the intelligibility said to – us and the intelligibility in – itself, which allow the adequate Reading and coherent methodology with the proposal of the work in relation to the concept of person.

Abdulkareem, Ali Abbas. "Potential involvement of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the pathogenesis of periodontitis." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7340/.

Full text
Abstract:
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition is reportedly important in loss of epithelial integrity and cell migration in inflammatory/infectious diseases and cancer. Since Gram negative anaerobic periodontal pathogens are well-recognized to induce intense inflammatory responses; the present study investigated their ability to induce EMT in vitro. A 2D chronic inflammatory model was developed using either the H400 oral keratinocyte cell-line or primary rat oral keratinocytes which were exposed to heat-killed Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Escherichia coli LPS for up to 8-days. EMT-associated changes were determined using semi-quantitative-RT-PCR, PCR-arrays, ELISA, scratch/transwell migration assays, immunocytochemistry/immunofluorescence, and transepithelial electrical resistance. Chronically stimulated cultures increased extracellular levels of the EMT regulatory cytokines, TGF-β1, TNF-α and EGF, whilst subsequent EMT-induction was indicated by up-regulation of mesenchymal markers, including vimentin and N-cadherin, and concomitant down-regulation of epithelial markers including E-cadherin and β-catenin. In addition, intracellular signaling activity of key EMT regulatory transcription factors, Snail-1 and NF-ĸB, increased following chronic bacterial exposure and was associated with enhanced cellular migratory activity and reduced epithelial barrier integrity. These results indicated for the first time that EMT may be involved in the compromised epithelial barrier function observed during periodontitis pathogenesis which may occur in response to prolonged local bacterial exposure.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The current study aims to search for updates on the film genre “Intimate Photoplay”, coined by the poet and film researcher Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) on 1915, and its relationship to the contemporary Brazilian films. Five movies were chosen to be the basis for the analyses: Breaking Up (2003), by Domingos Oliveira; Stray Dog (2007), by Beto Brant and Renato Ciasca; Not by Chance (2007), by Philippe Barcinski; Camila Jam (2008), by Murilo Salles, e Only the end (2009), by Matheus Souza. The New Brazilian Cinema is characterized as an industry cycle that starts after the so called “Resumption of Brazilian Cinema”, in 2002. The concept of “intimate” as a film genre is analyzed through the day-to-day practices and exposes intimate life subjects such as friendship, sexuality and the inner emotions of one self. There is, thus, a reading of the human relationships from analyses of the selected movies with an especial lens on the poetry of contemporary love and of the foremost site of intimacy, that is, home.

Psychic suffering and the body language of family members result from symbolic meanings, whose significations are apprehended through human relationships, and that are given to the interpretation of the situation which is influenced by the interaction of the family members with each other and with the society. This study aimed to understand the meanings of care to the family of the individual experiencing psychic suffering. This research is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach based on Maurice Merleau-Ponty s theoretical and philosophical framework of reference and on the hermeneutic phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur. Following the approval by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the institution under the Protocol Nº 0214.0.243.000-09, phenomenological interviews were conducted between October 2009 and June 2010 with 14 family caregivers of individuals presented with psychic suffering who were admitted at Paulo Guedes Unit of Psychiatric Admission of the University Hospital of Santa Maria/RS/Brazil. The following guided question was made in the interview: what is it like to take care of (patient s name)? From the comprehension and interpretation of the speeches, three themes emerged: the world of the family that provides healthcare; his or her own perception as a caregiver, and perceiving the other in the world of care. This research made it possible to understand that the family members showed that the care given to the other is on the intertwinement of the being with the world. There are several difficulties regarding the caregiving of an individual experiencing psychic suffering when he or she is not hospitalized, and the main are as follows: the fact that the family member had practically to abdicate of his or her own life to take care of the other revealing that caregiving is related to a historicity of a customary body situated in a space and time. These considerations can serve as subsidies for nurses formation and education so as to keep searching for strategies of sensibilization and mobilization in the academic field as well as providing opportunities to new learning spaces which are in line with the Psychiatric Reform. Also, professionals of the nursing staff should reflect on the caregiving beyond the hospital scenario supporting the family caregiver in home care environment.

This work is a contribution to the study of the crystal, molecular and supramolecular structures as well as the conformation in vacuum of decahydrophenantrene derivatives. (4aS,4bR,7R,10aS)-3,7-Dimethyl-10a- (propan-2-yl)-1,4,4a,4b,5,6,7,8,10,10a-decahydrophenanthrene-1,4-dione (Compound 1) In this compound, C19H26O2, the A ring adopts a chair conformation, whereas the B and C rings both adopt distorted half-chair conformations with the quaternary C atom common to both rings lying 0.577 (3) and 0.648 (3) Å out of the approximate plane defined by the remaining five C atoms (r.m.s.deviations = 0.1386 and 0.1156 Å for the B and C rings, respectively). Molecules are assembled in the crystal through C—H…O interactions involving both carbonyl O atoms, which lead to supramolecular chains aligned along the b axis. (4R,4aS,4bS,7R,10aR )-4-Hydroxy-4a,7-dimethyl-2-(propan-2- yl)-1,4,4a,4b,5,6,7,8,10,10a-decahydrophenanthren-1-one (Compound 2) In this compound, C19H28O2, the A ring adopts a chair conformation, and each of the B and C rings adopts a distorted half-chair conformation with the methine C atom in the CH2C(H)C( O) residue, common to both rings, lying 0.6397 (19) and 0.6328 (18) Å out of the approximate plane defined by the remaining five C atoms (r.m.s. deviations = 0.0791 and 0.0901 Å for rings B and C, respectively). Helical supramolecular chains along the a axis mediated by hydroxy– carbonyl O—H…O hydrogen bonds feature in the crystal packing. (4R,4aS,4bS,5R,10aR)-4-Hydroxy-4a,5-dimethyl-2-(propan-2-yl)- 1,4,4a,4b,5,6,7,8,10,10a-decahydrophenanthren-1-one (Compound 3) In this compound, C19H28O2, the A ring adopts a chair conformation. Both the B and C rings adopt envelope conformations with the C atoms common to both rings and adjacent to the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups, respectively, lying 0.604 (3) and 0.634 (3) Å out of the mean planes defined by the remaining five C atoms of rings B and C, respectively (r.m.s. deviations = 0.0100 and 0.0157 Å, respectively). The formation of linear supramolecular chains along the a axis mediated by hydroxy-O—H…O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds is the most prominent feature of the crystal packing. The calculated and crystallographic structures are shown to be similar so that, in this case, the intermolecular interactions and consequently the crystal packing has almost no influence on the molecular conformation.

Abstract:
I offer a critical exploration of tensions experienced by disabled people in the construction of positive identities in everyday contexts in which self-understanding is shaped both by social structural relations of inequality and unique individual experience. The empirical evidence I use to develop and support my thesis involves data I have generated using a variety of data collection tools, through a series of interviews, conversations and observations carried out with sixteen disabled people across Scotland and England. I argue that while certain barriers to participation in ordinary community life may be being removed, perceptions of impairment as something ‘wrong’ with the bodies of disabled people remain embedded in dominant disability discourse. There is a structural purpose underlying the continued representation of impairment as misfortune, involving the ascription of a negative role – the disabled role – to those whose bodily configurations pose a challenge to requirements of conformity. Drawing on insights generated in my research, and building on an idea originally proposed by John Swain and Sally French in 2000, I have developed a clarified affirmative model of disability. This I intend as a tool to be used by people with impairments in making sense of the disabling social relations they encounter in everyday contexts, to be used alongside the social model in gaining knowledge to unsettle mainstream assumptions which can only recognise impairment as personal tragedy.

This study has the purpose to understand the integration process of people with visual disabilities (PWD) in the context of the Inclusive Professional Education perspective, in one of the teaching units at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará (IFPA), during the training level of the Integrated Technical High School in the period from 2009 to 2012. The difficulties of studying everyday social events in your present moment, are amplified when we are part of the experience, even considering the care and separation required by the academic rigor and the scientific research on this issue. However, in the discussions of this work, contemporary approaches as: the relationship between social and academic inclusion and the professional education in the Federal Institutes (FIs) are necessary for better understanding of the practices of inclusion for people with disabilities in educational settings focused on technical training today. Therefore, data were collected relevant to the issue in the largest and oldest professional education unit of the IFPA, the Campus Belém, revealing, with greater depth, the analysis of a four-year school life of a student with visual disabilities, in his technical training, highlighting some landmarks of the institution, including the advent of the Federal Law 9.394/1996 (LDB). The study is characterized by an exploratory research approach, which is used in combination with the life history of the student and the case study, like basic research strategies which, in its turn, fit into the theoretical-methodological context of History and Memory of Education. The mainly data collection instrument was the interview, conducted with the use of half-structured questions, document analysis and participant observation in the sources, many of them oral sources - reports of a student with DV - were analyzed in an articulate manner. Besides the theoretical base, grounded in authors like Tompson, Vasconcelos, Sassaki, Caiado, Saviane, Manfred, Ciavatta, Mols, Laville and Dione, and others, the analysis and systematization of the data were performed by electing the more applicants analytical categories to the report sources in relation to the IFPA’s pedagogic practices in the visual integration of PCD, such as the specialized educational services, teacher training and the organization and management of the educational environment, among others. The results indicate that the conditions existing in the educational practices of GCBEL / IFPA are situated in relationship of the educational services subdued PWD which features in a identity character, and still predominant, marked by a transitional movement between the practices of ideological reasoning Integration and other Inclusion of education, and this prevalence is evident, among others, the idea that access to and retention of PCD in regular classes is a prerogative of those considered most adapted in this characterization of this student, or that it must adapt to school and not vice-versa, and that even with limited progress, educational practices, from the perspective of a professional education inclusive, need to be (re)structured as a systemic mode by the entire educational community and society, so that one can really guarantee the right education for all, not just for the PCD.
