Abstract:
17-7PH stainless steel is high age-hardening property due to precipitate NiAl intermetallics by aging heat treatment after the deformation induced martensitic transformation by cold working. In this study, the effect of aging conditions on stress relaxation behavior of 17-7PH stainless steel was investigated, and the mechanism of the stress relaxation was discussed. The 0.2% proof stress after aging at 753K for 180s-18ks is about 450MPa, and then decreases after 18ks. On the other hand, the stress relaxation ratio decreases by long time aging at 753K. The dislocation density of 17-7PH decreases by long time aging at 753K. The formation of NiAl clusters around 5nm by 3D-AP analysis is observed in 17-7PH aged at 753K for 1.8ks. It is suggested that the reduction of the stress relaxation ratio after long time aging at 753K is caused by NiAl clusters and decreasing mobile dislocation density.

Abstract:
Abstract The results of structure observations of Ni base superalloy subjected to long-term influence of high pressure hydrogen atmosphere at 750K and 850K are presented. The structure investigation were carried out using conventional light-, scanning- (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results presented here are supplementary to the mechanical studies given in part I of this investigations. The results of study concerning mechanical properties degradation and structure observations show that the differences in mechanical properties of alloy subjected different temperature are caused by more advanced processes of structure degradation during long-term aging at 850K, compare to that at 750K. Higher service temperature leads to formation of large precipitates of δ phase. The nucleation and growth of needle- and/or plate-like, relative large delta precipitates proceed probably at expense strengthening γʺ phases. Moreover, it can’t be excluded that the least stable γʺ phase is replaced with more stable γʹ precipitates. TEM observations have disclosed differences in dislocation structure of alloy aged at 750K and 850K. The dislocation observed in alloy subjected to 750K are were seldom observed only, while in that serviced at high stress and 850K dislocation array and dislocation cell structure was typical.

Abstract:
This study outlines the synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles, their characterization and their activity in the oxidation of methanol. A simple and easy co-precipitation method was used for the preparation of cerium oxide, without any added surfactants. The physicochemical properties of the sample were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology and size of the catalyst was studied using SEM. EDX confirms the element content of the synthesized cerium oxide. The structure of CeO2 was confirmed using XRD. Thus, the reported CeO2 was an active catalyst for methanol oxidation to form formaldehyde at a temperature range of 523–753K in the gas phase. At 753K, the cerium oxide catalyst gave 53% formaldehyde selectivity, 57% methanol conversion and 31% formaldehyde yields.

Abstract:
Uniform schedule maintenance of mining and haulage machines is one of the key conditions for increasing productive time of maintenance personnel and decreasing monthly average servicing time. Currently, Russian mines infringe regulated maintenance schedule aimed to improve output per shift. The loss of time of maintenance personnel and equipment as a consequence maintenance irregularity is never assessed. This article presents assessment results on maintenance schedule uniformity in terms of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 at Chernogorsky open pit mine, SUEK-Khakassia. A variant of calculation of time loss owing to inconsistent maintenance schedule for dump trucks is proposed. The loss of time by maintenance personnel and by mining/haulage machines is assessed. The fleet of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 is analyzed depending on overtime of operation between maintenance periods. It is recommended to improve uniformity of maintenance schedule for mining and haulage equipment.

Abstract:
High-carbon high-speed steels (HSS) are extremely abrasion resistant materials due to their high hardness MC type carbide and high hardness martensitic matrix. Different microstructures and mechanical behaviours were obtained after the quenching and tempering temperatures of HSS roll were changed. With air cooling and sodium silicate quenching, when the austenitizing temperature reaches 1273K, the metal matrix all transforms into the martensite, Afterwards, the eutectic carbides dissolve ceaselessly into the metal matrix and its continuous network distribution changes into broken network. The peak hardness temperature of high-carbon HSS is around 1323K, and the second hardening temperature is around 793K. No significant change in tensile strength and elongation percentage was observed unless the tempering temperature is beyond 753K. The tensile strength is increased obviously and the elongation percentage is decreased slightly beyond 753K. However, the tensile strength is decreased and the elongation percentage is increased when the temp exceeds 813K. The high-carbon HSS roll presents excellent abrasion resistance at 793K-813K.

Abstract:
The deformation behaviors of as-cast Mg-11Gd-2Y-Zn-Zr magnesium alloy were investigated by compression test with Gleeble-1500 thermal simulator at temperature of 623-753K and strain rate of 0.01-0.5 s-1. The flow stress behaviors of the magnesium alloy were carried out at a strain of 0.7. The strain rate and deformation temperature had great influence on the flow stress behaviors. The flow stress increases with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The flow stress has more than one peak stress at a strain rate of 0.5s-1showing continuous dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanism, while other flow stresses exhibited only one peak stress indicating discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) mechanism. It was also found that the flow stress behavior could be described by the hyperbolic sine constitutive equation, in which the determined average activation energy is 273.426 kJ·mol-1. The maximum error value between calculated value and experimental value is 5.5%. The deformation map was also established, and the best parameter for hot working was found to be 0.1s-1/753k approximately.

Abstract:
Alkylperoxy radicals are important intermediates formed during the oxidation of organic compounds in combustion and atmospheric environments. Because of their ubiquity, accurate kinetic, mechanistic and spectroscopic information are necessary in order to model combustion and atmospheric processes. A Molecular Modulation Kinetic Spectrometer (MMKS) and gas chromatographic analysis were used to confirm and extend available peroxy radical data. Bromine initiated photo-oxidation of isobutane, at 303K, provided a source of t-butylperoxy radicals. Subsequent radical reactions were inferred from the observed product distribution. Evidence of the importance of the t-butylperoxy radical reaction with hydrogen bromide, and of a terminating channel for the radical's self-reaction, were obtained. Bromine initiated photo-oxidation of hydrocarbons may provide a useful source of peroxy radicals difficult to generate by alternative methods. Azoethane and azomethane photo-oxidation provided sources of ethylperoxy and methylperoxy radicals respectively. MMKS experiments enabled kinetic and spectroscopic parameters to be extracted for the former radical and its self-reaction between 303-457K, and for the latter at 303K. In the case of the ethylperoxy radical, complementary end-product studies enabled mechanistic information to be extracted. End-product studies provided evidence of two decomposition channels for a β-alkylperoxyalkyl radical, generated in the hydrogen chloride catalysed decomposition of di-t-butyl peroxide at 393K. Thermochemically favourable O-heterocycle formation predominated over the alternative decomposition channel to olefin. A chemical kinetic model to describe the gas-phase oxidation of propane at `intermediate' temperatures was developed. The latter was used to investigate the enhancement of commercially valuable products by additive gas `addition'. Of the two additives tested, carbon monoxide and hydrogen peroxide, the former appeared more promising in modifying, favourably, the chemistry of the system.

Saleem, Amjad. "Does memorization without comprehension result in language learning?" Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/75307/.

Full text
Abstract:
Muslims across the world memorize the Quran in Arabic for verbatim recall. Memorizers can be native speakers of Arabic, non-native speakers of Arabic, or non-Arabic speakers. The last category of speakers constitutes an unusual learner population, in that they cannot draw on primary linguistic knowledge to assist their memorization. Research on memorization suggests that memorization may instil sensitivity to patterns that can be used to bootstrap learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate if memorization of the Quran by non-Arabic speaking memorizers leads to pattern recognition in Classical Arabic. Memorizers of the Quran with no knowledge of Arabic were tested on their awareness of language patterns through a grammaticality judgement task (study 2). Contrary to implicit predictions in the research literature, findings from the language tests indicated that the participants had not developed any sensitivity to the morphological patterns of Classical Arabic. These results are discussed in the light of expert Quran memorizers’ reflections on their memorization practices (study 1), including what they brought to the act of memorization and what, according to them, underlay their success in memorization. It is proposed that memorizers’ extreme risk aversion in memorization stands in their way of developing awareness of the language patterns. This interpretation is further evidenced by results from a follow up study on native speakers of Arabic, who also did poorly on the grammaticality judgement task. The conclusion drawn is that Quran memorizers recite accurately because they don’t learn the language. It is further concluded that Quran memorization is a special case, in which a range of extra linguistic factors such as identity, motivation and intention play an important role.

Nespoli, Massimo <1988&gt. "Modeling earthquake-fluid interaction: shallow effects on groundwater circulation and induced seismicity in deep geothermal exploitation." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/7530/.

Full text
Abstract:
The interaction between earthquakes and crustal fluids is a very complex topic due to several mechanisms that are involved and which influence each other. Some phenomena, like the alterations of springs discharge rates and fluid flow, liquefaction and changing of the water levels in phreatic wells are largely documented in the literature, but their explanation is not yet fully clear. Furthermore, these phenomena can greatly change with the rock type, the earthquake magnitude and the observation distance from the fault. Within a distance of a few fault lengths from the epicenter, an earthquake can alter both the regional stress field and the hydraulic properties of the rocks, influencing the underground fluid distribution. In this thesis, I apply the numerical simulator TOUGH2 to represent the changes in water level of some wells after the ML 5.9 earthquake that took place in Italy in 2012. The model shows that the wells response to the seismic event can be represented imposing a static stress change and highlights the role of the soil stratigraphy. This zone is also well known for localized methane seepages associated with anomalous soil temperatures. I simulate the process and draw some conclusions on the nature of this phenomenon and on the possible interactions with the local seismicity. Finally, I study the earthquake-fluid interaction from the opposite point of view: looking at how fluids can promote seismicity. I present the results obtained by coupling the TOUGH2 geothermal simulator with a stochastic seed model of seismicity. The coupled simulation could capture the main characteristics of the seismicity induced by the fluid injection in a seismically active area.

Bozic, Branko. "An explanation of consumer trust recovery in a food retailer." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7530/.

Full text
Abstract:
An organization trusted by consumers enjoys a number of benefits. Unfortunately, instances of trust-damaging events involving organizations happen often. Damaged consumer trust in an organization has numerous negative consequences for the organization and for consumers. Currently, there is a paucity of theory about consumer trust recovery. So, understanding why and how consumer trust recovery occurs is timely, and theoretically and practically relevant. However, the findings from this study suggest that we need to distinguish between two kinds of consumer trust recovery. The first (I call it unconscious consumer trust recovery) refers to trust recovery that occurs without the consumer being fully conscious of it. In other words, a consumer is aware of their damaged trust during the scandal, but is not aware that their trust in the organization has improved. The consumer does not think about his or her recovered trust, just as they did not think about their level of trust before the scandal. The consumer trust is habitual. The second (I call it conscious consumer trust recovery) refers to an improvement in damaged trust where the consumer is fully conscious of their trust recovery. In other words, in conscious trust recovery the consumer is aware that the scandal damaged their trust in the organization. Also, after the scandal, in contrast to unconscious trust recovery, in conscious trust recovery the consumer is also fully aware that he trusts the organization as much or more than during the scandal. My aim is to inductively develop a theory explaining each type of consumer trust recovery. To do so, I use Charmazian grounded theory methodology, because this methodology is developed for theory-building from data and is aligned with the philosophical underpinnings of this study. The empirical context for this study is the meat adulteration scandal (“the horse meat scandal”) in 2013 in the UK. I collect and analyse empirical data about both types of trust recovery in an organization from 31 consumers that experienced both types. My analysis shows that when consumers perceive the scandal as less important, they experience unconscious trust recovery. This happens because the reduced importance of the scandal leads to a shift in consumers’ attention, which in turn leads to their inattentiveness to the scandal. Consumer inattentiveness is an immediate antecedent of unconscious trust recovery. Conscious consumer trust recovery occurs because consumers see cues indicating to them that the food retailer has improved product control systems, which in turn leads to consumer perceptions of the organization’s renewed ability. Consumer perception of renewed ability is an immediate antecedent of their conscious trust recovery. My findings lead me to make three main theoretical contributions to the theory of trust recovery in general and to consumer trust recovery in particular. The first contribution lies in showing that there are two types of consumer trust recovery in an organization, not one, as previously conceptualised, and that the same consumers can experience both types. The second contribution is a theory of unconscious consumer trust recovery in an organization that involves three concepts: consumers’ perceived importance of the scandal, consumers’ shift of attention, and consumer inattentiveness. The third contribution is the finding that conscious recovery of consumer trust occurs even when existing theory of trust recovery would predict that it would not. This study can help managers aiming to repair consumer trust in an organization by identifying a set of antecedents and underlying mechanisms that can guide such trust repair.

Ghimire, Sandip. "Volatile Fatty Acid Production in Ruminants." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/75306.

Full text
Abstract:
Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are important products of ruminal fermentation. The VFA are not only the major source of energy to the ruminant animals but also influence methane production in the rumen. Therefore it is important to understand mechanism controlling VFA production and to depict VFA production in a model. This will allow us to devise strategies to enhance energy utilization and reduce methane production in ruminant livestock. An evaluation of a mechanistic model in predicting VFA production was conducted and equations were introduced into the model to improve the predictions. Later a continuous culture experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis on which those equations were based on. A mechanistic model -" Molly, was evaluated using a dataset with reported VFA production rates. The results of residual error analysis indicated that the root mean square prediction errors (RMSPE) were 63, 63, and 49% for acetate, propionate and butyrate, respectively. An assessment from two studies reporting VFA production revealed a potential of reducing errors of prediction by representing interconversion among VFA. In the second study, equations based on thermodynamics influence of pH and VFA concentration were introduced in the model to represent interconversion among VFA. The parameters for de novo VFA production and VFA absorption were re derived with (VFAInt) and without (BASE) the new interconversion equations. There were some improvements in the VFA concentration predictions but the improvements were both in VFAInt and BASE models. The RMSPE of VFA production were still above 50% for acetate, propionate and butyrate. The larger errors of predictions were attributed to measurement variation in VFA production literature, or possible incorrect rate constants for interconversion equations. Finally, a third study was conducted to assess the effect of pH, and VFA concentration on VFA and methane production in continuous culture. The treatments consisted of control, 20 mmol/d acetate infusion (INFAC), 7 mmol/d propionate infusion (INFPR), and low pH (LOWPH). Individual isotopes of acetate, propionate and butyrate were infused in the fermenters to estimate interconversions among VFA. With LOWPH treatment methane emission was reduced whereas production of propionate was increased. Hydrogen production was higher in INFAC indicating that some of the acetate could have been degraded to CO2 and H2. It was estimated that around 3 % of de novo acetate was converted to propionate and 9 % to butyrate. Exchange between propionate and butyrate was insignificant and below 1% of de novo production of either VFA. However, treatments did not affect interconversion rates among VFA. These results indicated that pH and VFA concentration do not have thermodynamic influence on VFA interconversion as hypothesized.

Abstract:
Watchmen has been hailed as revolutionary not only for the literary quality of Alan Moore's script and the precise execution of Dave Gibbon's art, but also for the novel's successful exploration of sophisticated subject matter and realistic moral conflict. Perhaps the most interesting question Watchmen forces us to consider is why an individual would put on the costume and don the mask, and how such a constructed persona affects the individual psychologically and morally. For those heroes that came before, the compulsion to fight crime was often an in-born ideology of justice. But for Moore's Watchmen, we find that even superheroes are corruptible, flawed, imperfect, and even (more than) a little crazy. In the wake of what is arguably one of the most influential superhero novels published to date, the comics industry saw a rise in the popularity of anti-heroes like Moore's, but it wasn't until the 1991 creation of Marvel's Deadpool that fans saw exactly what it means to be a hero in the post-atomic, post-Vietnam age. Through self-reflexivity, genre deconstruction, and dark hysteria, Deadpool shows us that it isn't so easy to walk the straight line of the righteous, and that sometimes it's much easier to submit to the madness of a chaotic, morally ambiguous world.

Abstract:
The core of a VHTR is a stacked structure of graphite blocks. For the development of a seismic analysis methodology, a preliminary evaluation of one single block and single column stacked block structure under a harmonic excitation was performed. In a real design, the blocks are connected by pin and socket component. So, the evaluations were conducted for a stacked structure with and without pin and socket component, respectively. And the evaluation results were compared to each other. For these evaluations, the commercial finite element analysis software ABAQUS/Explicit was utilized.

Abstract:
Numerical simulation code for predicting void distribution in two-phase turbulent flow in a sub-channel was developed. The purpose is to obtain a profile of void distribution in the sub-channel. The result will be used for predicting a heat flux at departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) in a rod bundle for the pressurized water reactor (PWR). The fundamental equations were represented by a generalized transport equation, and the transport equation was transformed onto the generalized coordinate system fitted to the rod surface and the symmetric lines in the sub-channel. Using the finite-volume method the transport equation was discretized for the SIMPLE algorism. The flow field and void fraction at the steady state were calculated for different average void fractions. The computational result for atmospheric pressure condition was successfully compared with experimental data. Sensitivity analysis for the PWR condition was performed, and the result showed that the secondary flow slightly contributed to homogenizing the void distribution.

Abstract:
Modern concepts of nuclear power reactor systems are equipped with passive systems for decay heat removal. Examples are the pool of the emergency condenser (BWR-1000) or the pool of the ESBWR. These systems operate without active influence from outside. The questions arise: How reliable are the based physical mechanisms? Are they understood completely? Are actual models able to describe the phenomena? In different passive systems the energy is transferred by natural circulation into large pools which are considered as infinite heat sink. The paper deals with experiments and with CFD simulations to investigate the capability of actual CFD codes to describe these phenomena. In the FZ Dresden-Rossendorf at the facility TOPFLOW heating-up tests of an emergency condenser were performed. During these tests also the temperature courses on the secondary side of the pool were recorded. The data recording comprises periods starting from single phase liquid until steam on the secondary pool side was found. During these experiments temperature stratification phenomena were observed, which were found in earlier small scale tests. In the paper also these small scale experiments are described. A detailed CFD analysis of these experiments was performed. An explanation of the observed phenomena on the basis of the small scale tests and the CFD simulations is presented.

Abstract:
Network computing infrastructure for sharing tools and data was implemented to support international collaboration. In designing the system, we focused on three issues: accessibility, security, and usability. In the implementation, we integrated existing network and web technologies into the infrastructure by introducing the authentication gateway. For the first issue, SSL-VPN (Security Socket Layer – Virtual Private Network) technology was adopted to access computing resources beyond firewalls. For the second issue, PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)-based authentication mechanism was used for access control. Shared key based file encryption was also used to protect against information leakage. The introduction of the authentication gateway enables to strengthen the security. To provide high usability, WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) was used to provide users with a function to manipulate distributed files through a windows-like GUI (Graphical User Interface). These functions were integrated into a Grid infrastructure called AEGIS (Atomic Energy Grid InfraStructure). Web applications were developed on the infrastructure for dynamic community creation and information sharing. In this paper, we discuss design issues of the system and report the implementation of a prototype applied to share information for the international project GNEP (Global Nuclear Energy Partnership).

Abstract:
In the Atomic Energy Research Institute, Budapest, Hungary a computer code for modelling the in-containment fission product related processes of a design basis LOCA in VVER-440/213 type nuclear reactors is under development. The model is based on the lumped-parameter approach (the total volume of the simulated containment is divided into distinct, connected sub-volumes in which the parameters are assumed to be homogenous). The structural and functional models of the adequate reactor units are implemented in the code. The main considered physical processes of the fission product elements are radioactive decay, transport by gas flows, removal from the containment atmosphere by adsorption to wall surfaces and wash-out. In order to test the abilities of the code we performed sample calculations for the units of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, Hungary. In this study the discussion of the first results is presented following a summary of the basics of the physical models implemented in the code.

Full text
Abstract:
For the safety design of the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR), it is strongly required that the Post Accident Heat Removal (PAHR) is achieved after a hypothetical Core Disruptive Accident (CDA). In the PAHR, it is important that the molten material is fragmented to be solidified by the sodium coolant with high boiling point and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, in order to estimate whether the molten material jet is completely solidified in sodium coolant or not, it is necessary to evaluate the jet breakup length. Although there are many previous studies on the jet breakup length, the tendency of jet breakup length is different for the previous studies. To estimate jet breakup length, it is necessary to understand the interaction between molten core material and coolant. The objective of the present study is to clarify the influence of the interfacial behavior of the jet on the fragmentation behavior on the jet surface. The experiments are conducted to obtain the interfacial behavior and the fragmentation behavior on the jet surface by injecting transparent Fluorinert™ (FC-3283) into water. The jet breakup behavior of the Fluorinert and the fragmentation behavior on the jet surface in pool are observed by using high speed video camera. To clarify the influence of interfacial behavior on jet surface fragmentation, it is necessary to clarify the effect of the internal flow of the jet and the surrounding flow structure on the interfacial behavior. The internal and the external velocity distribution of the jet are obtained by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique from the visual data. Shear stress is evaluated from the velocity data obtained by PIV technique. Reynolds stress and turbulent energy are also evaluated from the velocity data. As the results, shear stress becomes large along the interfacial wave. The maximum value of shear stress is decreased toward downstream. Reynolds stress becomes large at the jet surface. The vortex around the interfacial wave is observed by PIV measurement. The local shear stress acts on the interfacial wave. It is suggested that the local shear stress on the jet surface causes the fragmentation. From the experimental results, the interaction between the interfacial behavior of the jet and flow structure of the jet and surrounding fluid are discussed. The dominant mechanism of the fragmentation behavior and the influence of local shear stress at the interface on the fragementation are also discussed.

Abstract:
A consequence of a loss of coolant accident is that the local insulation material is damaged and maybe transported to the containment sump where it can penetrate and/or block the sump strainers. An experimental and theoretical study, which examines the transport of mineral wool fibers via single and multi-effect experiments is being performed. This paper focuses on the experiments and simulations performed for validation of numerical models of sedimentation and resuspension of mineral wool fiber agglomerates in a racetrack type channel. Three velocity conditions are used to test the response of two dispersed phase fiber agglomerates to two drag correlations and to two turbulent dispersion coefficients. The Eulerian multiphase flow model is applied with either one or two dispersed phases.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2018: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2018-75300.

Full text
Abstract:
Presented here are the numerical calculations of the 3D transonic flow of an ideal gas through an LP steam turbine last stage with exhaust hood, taking into account blade oscillations. The approach is based on a solution to the coupled aerodynamic-structure problem for 3D flow through a turbine stage using the partially integrated method. The blade oscillations and loads acting on the blades are a part of the solution. An ideal gas flow through the stator and moving rotor blades with periodicity on the whole annulus is described by unsteady Euler conservation equations, integrated with the Godunov-Kolgan explicit monotonous finite-volume difference scheme and a moving hybrid H-H rotor blade grid. The structural analysis uses the modal approach and a 3D finite element model of a blade. The proposed algorithm allows for the calculation of turbine stages with an arbitrary pitch ratio of stator and rotor blades, taking into account unsteady-load induced blade oscillations. The pressure distribution behind the rotor blades was non-uniform on account of the exhaust hood. As a result of the fluid-structure interaction and exhaust hood induced nonsymmetrical pressure distribution behind the rotor blades, the first blade mode was no longer bending but bending-torsion.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite significant research activities into organic Rankine cycles for the conversion of low-temperature heat into power, there remain uncertainties with regards to non-ideal gas effects and their role in turbine performance. Moreover, existing performance models and numerical solvers have yet to be validated for turbines operating with organic fluids. This paper documents the design of a closed-loop supersonic test facility intended for experimental characterisation of the flow of organic fluids under typical operating conditions experienced within an ORC turbine. The test section forms part of a wider test facility, developed for the study of ORC expanders, which includes a screw compressor, the supersonic test section, a heat exchanger and an expander test section. The working fluid is R1233zd, and the test facility is sized to deliver test conditions up to 20 bar and 125 °C with a mass-flow rate of 1 kg/s. After an overview of the test facility, the detailed design of the upstream diffuser, settling chamber, contraction zone and converging-diverging nozzle to deliver a flow with a Mach number of 2 to the test section is discussed. The performance of the test section is confirmed by CFD simulations. Finally, the intended flow visualisation using particle-image velocimetry is discussed. This includes the identification of a suitable seeding method considering both liquid and solid tracer particles. The assessment is completed considering constraints such as the operating conditions, the required particle size to accurately trace the fluid flow, maintenance issues, and compatibility with the working fluid. In particular, the possibility of using the compressor lubricating oil as the seeding particle is evaluated.
