The purpose of this study was to determine if free or esterified carnitine could alter fatty acid metabolism and ameliorate sepsis in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats. Throughout a 96 h observation post-LPS, i.p. administration of both markedly reduced illness and accelerated recovery. Carnitine prevented the acute LPS-induced rise in serum triglycerides (45 ± 6, 59 ± 5 vs. 83 ± 8 mg/ml, p < 0.001), respectively. This difference was accompanied by a significant increase in liver lipogenesis in LPS controls compared to both carnitines and normal rats (6.1 ± 0.3 vs. 3.9 ± 0.5, 4.3 ± 0.5,

Pythium species are frequently recovered from recycled irrigation water in greenhouse production systems and may cause damping off and root rot if the water is not disinfested properly. Chlorination is often employed as a disinfesting agent, but can be difficult to monitor accurately because its activity is pH-dependent. Oxidation reduction potential (ORP) is a reliable, real-time measurement of the oxidizing potential of a chlorine solution. Chemical examination of methanolic extract of Prunus persica, stem bark, led to isolation of Flavon 3', 4', dihydroxy 6 methoxy 7-O-? -L-rhamnopyranoside (1), Prunetin-5-O-?-D-glucopyranoside (2), with previously known compounds ?-Sitosterol and Querceitin. Compounds 1 and 2 were isolated for the first time from this plant. The structure of compounds were elucidated with the help of chemical and spectral studies.© 2012 JSR Publications. These were monitored weekly for diarrhoea for 2 years.A total of 180 samples from cases of diarrhoea and 766 samples obtained during diarrhoea-free periods were studied by dot-blot hybridization with an EAV-specific DNA probe. EAV were found in 6/180 (3·3%) cases of diarrhoea and 6/766 (0·8%) asymptomatic samples (P < 0·015). Incidence of EAV was 3·9 cases per 100 person-years in children < 60 months old. EAV-related

Tug of war (TOW) involves 2 teams of eight people, pulling against each other on a rope. The main goal of TOW is to pull the opposing team towards a centre line over a distance of 4 m. The measurement of physiological parameters is key to understanding the demands of an activity and to identifying its limiting performance factors. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the intensity and effort demands of TOW pullers during competition, as follows: Data were collected from 7 male pullers (Height: 175.14±4.85; Body Mass: 77.39±3.92; Age: 39.86±11.68; %Fat: 17.56±5.21; VO2max: 44.24±8.38) in

Often, model validation is performed at single locations due to the lack of spatially-distributed data. Since the analysis of parametric model uncertainties can be performed independently of observations, it is a suitable method to test the influence of environmental variability on model evaluation.
