AbstractA total of 897 pigs were used in a study to investigate the relative effects of terminal sire genotype (lines Av.Bv. C), sex (castrate v. gilt), slaughter weight (80 v. 100 v. 220 kg), feeding regimen (ad libitum v. restricted, 0·82 ad libitum intake) and slaughter-house (HI v. H2 v. Sire line A was a pure Duroc population, and B and C were European-type experimental lines where C contained Pietrain and B did not. In total, 26 sires from line A, 42 sires from line B, and 21 sire

Background Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is one of the most common inherited bleeding disorders, imposing a substantial health impact and financial burden. The Cost of von Willebrand disease in Europe: A Socioeconomic Study (CVESS) characterises the socio-economic cost of VWD across Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and the UK. Methods A retrospective, cross-sectional design captured 12 months of patient disease management, collected from August-December 2018, for 974 patients. This enabled estimation of direct medical, direct non-medical and indirect costs, utilising prevalence estimates to extra

AbstractThere have been suggestions that positive feedback from the meal may stimulate the performance of undesirable behaviour, such as stereotypies, in the post-feeding period. The aim of this work was to measure the short-term effects of a meal on the post-feeding behaviour of the pig.Pigs (70 kg live weight) were offered food ad libitum for 7 days and then given a restricted food allowance for 23 days (experiment 1) or 14 days (experiment 2). In experiment 1, the food allowance was given in one, two or three meals per day. In experiment 2, the food allowance was given in two meals per day

The objective of this experiment was to investigate a possible interaction between protein and energy malnutrition (PEM) and intestinal nematode infections. We report on a 3×2 factorial study in which pigs were fed either a low protein energy (LPE), low protein (LP) or a normal protein energy (NPE) diet, and 6 weeks later inoculated with Trichuris suis (4000 infective eggs). Secondarily, in order to obtain a polyparasitic status, pigs were concomitantly inoculated with Ascaris suum (600 infective eggs). The number of T. suis-infected pigs was higher in LP pigs compared with NPE pigs (100 versu

Introduction Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) or hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a serious complication following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with an overall incidence ranging from 5% to 15% and a highly variable mortality rate. Recently, the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) updated the diagnostic criteria, severity assessments, and risk factor evaluations for SOS/VOD (Mohty M et al. 2023). Abstract Background: Rapid increases in hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations or achievement of high Hb levels during erythropoiesis-stimulating protein (ESP) therapy may put anemic patients undergoing chemotherapy at increased risk for cardiovascular/thromboembolic adverse events (AEs). A potential safety concern of less frequent ESP administration (eg, every 3 weeks [Q3W] vs weekly [QW]) is that higher single doses may cause rapid increases in Hb levels. Dose adjustment rules may provide physicians with guidance on how to minimize these risks; however, defining appropriate rules can be challenging.

Abstract Introduction: High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HCT) is the standard of care for younger patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM). In approximately 15% of MM patients the monoclonal (M) spike consists of k or l light chains only as opposed to heavy + light chains. It remains unclear whether light chain (LC) MM has a different prognosis compared to other monoclonal protein subtypes after an auto-HCT. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1067 patients with MM who underwent auto-HCT between January 1, 2004 and January 1

Abstract Corticosteroids are the standard initial therapy for acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) but are effective in only half of the cases. Methods to identify patients who are unlikely to respond to conventional initial therapy and who warrant alternative, more effective initial therapy are needed. The Minnesota (MN) group recently defined high-risk (HR)-aGVHD at onset by a novel acute GVHD risk score (Br J Haem 157(6):732,2012). Patients with HR-aGVHD were less likely to respond to steroid therapy and had a 2-fold increased risk of treatment-related (non-relapse) mortality (TRM) compa

Abstract Abstract 792 Introduction: We previously reported the use of a sequential treatment (tx) program, R-CHOP-14 x4 followed by ICE x3, results in an 80% 5-y PFS (JCO 2010; 28 (23): 3754–3761) but interim (int) FDG-PET-4 (FDG-4) scan did not predict outcome. Patients (pts) with a positive (pos) FDG-4 underwent biopsy (bx), of which 85% were negative (neg). There was no difference in PFS for pts with pos FDG-4 and a neg bx vs. FDG-4 neg. In an attempt to reduce false pos FDG-4, we changed the induction tx as well as the timing of FDG-4. In addition, we prospectively evaluated 18F−fluorothym
