Abstract Alstroemeria is one of the most popular cut flowers in Europe, due to its postharvest longevity and a wide colour palette. However, premature leaf yellowing reduces the ornamental value of the flowering stems even before opening of the secondary florets in cymes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of sucrose, gibberellin and 8-hydroxychinoline citrate as postharvest treatments of cut Alstroemeria ‘Dancing Queen’.Several “flower models” were used to distinguish the effects of the chemicals on senescence of flowers and leaves in the above cultivar. Flowering stems were harvested in November 2011 and March 2012 and the response to treatments for both dates differed: while the longevity of primary and secondary florets was prolonged by the standard preservative (8-HQC+S) in the autumn, there was no difference for the spring collection date. For the March harvest, the secondary flower buds opened faster than for the November harvest, where bud opening was generally hastened by 8-HQC+S. Also, the flower model affected floret longevity and changed the response to the treatments: florets on defoliated flowering stems responded better to the preservative than those on stems with leaves. Florets from different flower models differed in diameter: those from complete stems were usually larger than those from isolated cymes. The secondary florets were much smaller than the primary florets, especially in isolated cymes. Both, GA3 and the standard preservative significantly increased the second floret diameter in all models; however, there were no additive effects of the treatments. GA3 significantly postponed leaf yellowing in all floral models while the sugar-containing preservative had little effect. Generally, the flower model had significant effect on leaf longevity.

Abstract:
The reaction of 8 -trimethylsiloxyquinoline, 2 with PCl3, PhPCl2, and PhPF2 has furnished the corresponding 8 -quinolyl halophosphite derivatives, 3-5 . The synthesis of two metal complexes, 8 and 9, of 4 with Au(I) and Pt(II) is described. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and by 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy. A single crystal X-ray diffraction study of 4 has been conducted; a short intramolecular P ··· N contact (230.9 pm) and a long P-Cl bond (218.7 pm) were observed.

Abstract:
Large area coatings containing nanoparticulate metal oxides dispersed in polymers are manufactured at high speed (up to 200 m2 /min.) by curtain- or cascade coating on flexible substrates near room temperature. Simultaneously coated multilayers, which may contain different metal oxides, show interesting new properties for industrial applications. Thick (40 $m) coatings with rare-earth doped aluminum oxide nanoparticles have been commercialized for waterfast ink-jet media which are dry to touch after printing, show photo-parity and are very stable towards water, light and environment if appropriate inks are used. Strong capillary forces due to nanoporosity allow instant ink-absorption. Experimental techniques used to develop these materials and results related to imaging parameters are discussed. Thin layers (1-10 $m) of nanoparticulate, nanoporous TiO2 and LiMn2O4, dispersed in non-electroactive polymers such as polyethylene glycols, can be used as electrodes for rechargeable Li-ion batteries with very fast charge-discharge cycles and high power performance. The excellent ion-conducting properties of unsintered, nanoparticulate coatings of these metal oxides were unexpected and allow applications of temperature sensitive substrates and organic addenda. By coating very thin, almost or totally polymer-free layers of highly-porous, monodisperse aluminum-oxides with minimum particle size, display devices with improved optical efficiency were prepared. These layers have a low refractive index thus allowing for higher intensities of light emitted by organic electro-luminescers in OLED’s and PLED’s. This property is useful for mobile devices as phones and PDA’s. A hitherto unknown, photo-catalytic chemical reaction of the classical green emitter tris-(8-hydroxychinolino)-aluminum (Alq3) has been discovered in coatings of such optically efficient devices after exposing them to daylight in air. An efficient blue-emitting species of Alq3 with another stereochemical structure was directly formed within these layers at room temperature by photolysis in ambient atmosphere. Interesting new applications of specially designed, large-area coated and transparent nanostructured matrices on flexible substrates for optical gas sensors are discussed in more detail in this paper.

Abstract:
Diffusive gradient in thin film technique (DGT) represents a relatively new approach for in situ determinations of labile metal-species in aquatic systems. The DGT device passively accumulates labile species from the solution while deployed in situ, and therefore contamination problems associated with conventional collection and filtration procedures are eliminated. This study deals with a possible modification of DGT technique. The key of using DGT technique for speciation analysis of metals is to find out suitable binding phase and diffusion layer. The new resin gel based on Spheron Oxin (5 sulphophenyl-azo-8-hydroxyquinoline) ion exchanger with a higher selectivity to trace metals than Chelex 100 could potentially provide more information on metals speciation in aquatic systems. The performance of this new binding phase was tested for the determination of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and U under laboratory conditions. The hydrogel layer based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was synthesized and tested as a new diffusion gel for application in DGT technique.

The submitted thesis deals within the sensitive fluorimetric determination of scandium with a new reagent 8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid. All important factors such as time, pH, reagent concentration, buffers, surfactants and selected interferents have been studied with respect to the selectivity, sensitivity, precision and detection limit on the determination by using classic fluorescence spectra and their first derivation. This reagent was also used for the determination of scandium in real waters. The new reagent was shortly compared to morin and lumogallion when used for scandium.

Title of diploma thesis: Searching of effective cobalt chelators - 8-hydroxyquinolines Cobalt is one of the essential trace elements present in the human body. It forms a part of the organometallic complex of vitamin B12, which is essential for many physiological functions. Both overload and lack of cobalt in the body is associated with pathological conditions. Manifestations of deficiency can lead up to pernicious anemia or hypofunction of the thyroid gland. Cobalt intoxication can occur in an industrial environment, such as by cobalt metal dust during heavy metal processing, or by its release due to corrosion from orthopedic prostheses. Systemic toxicity is manifested by a number of endocrine, cardiovascular and neurological symptoms. The main aim of this diploma thesis was to find effective chelators of cobalt from the group of substances derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline. In vitro spectrophotometric measurement was used to determine the degree of chelation. The effect of chelation was also monitored ex vivo in rat erythrocytes.
