Abstract:
This article focuses on the use of a Bayesian approach that combines simulations and physical observations to estimate cosmological parameters. It begins with an overview of the Λ-cold dark matter (CDM) model, the simplest cosmological model in agreement with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and largescale structure analysis. The CDM model is determined by a small number of parameters which control the composition, expansion and fluctuations of the universe. The present study aims to learn about the values of these parameters using measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Computationally intensive simulation results are combined with measurements from the SDSS to infer about a subset of the parameters that control the CDM model. The article also describes a statistical framework used to determine a posterior distribution for these cosmological parameters and concludes by showing how it can be extended to include data from diverse data sources.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the Lambda-CDM (cold dark matter) model. In 1948, under the impetus of George Gamow, Robert Hermann, Ralph Alpher, and Hans Bethe in particular, relativistic cosmology entered the second phase of its history. In this phase, physical processes, in particular, nuclear and atomic processes, are taken into account. This provides two observational tests of the model: primordial nucleosynthesis, which explains the origin of light nuclei, and the existence of the cosmic microwave background, and it establishes the fact that the universe has a thermal history. Study of the large-scale structure of the universe then indicates the existence of dark matter and a nonzero cosmological constant. This model, known as the Λ‎CDM model, is the standard model of contemporary cosmology.

O’Rourke, Michael. Comparing Methods for Cross-Disciplinary Research. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.23.

Full text
Abstract:
The methods of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research (hereafter, “cross-disciplinary research” or CDR) are “fragmented”, that is, distributed in unconnected ways across the intellectual landscape. Fragmentation results in inefficiency, which motivates systematic organization of methods. Systematic organization has value for both cross-disciplinary practitioners and theorists since it structures thinking about the range of variables that shape CDR, enhancing efficiency and prospects for project success. “Comparing Methods for Cross-Disciplinary Research” contributes a comparative, philosophical perspective to the systematic organization of CDR methods. After a brief historical review, the chapter analyzes and illustrates CDR methods. A comparative assessment of CDR methods is then presented that surveys a sample of prominent approaches to the organization of CDR methods before describing an alternate approach. The chapter closes with a discussion of outstanding challenges for those interested in comparing and organizing cross-disciplinary methods.

Full text
Abstract:
Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) comprise a family of multisystem diseases in which N- and O-linked glycosylation and glypiation of a variety of proteins and lipids is deficient. The hypoglycosylation of multiple glycoconjugates impairs normal development of the brain (and other organs), and is associated with both episodic and chronic organ dysfunction. Developmental disorders; seizures; strokelike episodes (and stroke); hearing and visual loss; peripheral neuropathy; coagulopathy; and immune, liver, endocrine, cardiac, and cutaneous manifestations may occur in varying combinations. Specific therapy is available for MPI-CDG and SLC35C2-CDG. Most forms of O-linked CDG affect muscle; these include congenital muscular dystrophies and limb girdle dystrophies.

Full text
Abstract:
Caesarean delivery (CD) is one of the most common operations in the world and providing effective pain relief is important not only for humanitarian reasons but also to speed up recovery and reduce postoperative complications. An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of pain transmission after CD has led to a multimodal approach to analgesia. This involves combining analgesics which work by different mechanisms resulting in an additive effect whilst at the same time reducing side effects. In contemporary practice, most CDs are carried out under neuraxial anaesthesia and neuraxial techniques using either intrathecal or epidural opioids have become central to the provision of effective postoperative analgesia. They reduce the need for systemic opioid analgesia and have few side effects, respiratory depression being the most significant but extremely uncommon. In circumstances where it is not possible to use neuraxial analgesia, for example, after general anaesthesia, other techniques such as intravenous patient-controlled analgesia using opioids and the transversus abdominis plane block have been shown to be effective. As part of the multimodal analgesic approach, many patients will require systemic analgesics to further improve pain relief and to limit side effects. Paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are now widely established in the management of postoperative CD pain where they have been shown to potentiate opioid effects, decrease opioid consumption, reduce side effects, and complement the somatic pain relief provided by opioids. As part of a step-down approach after primary management with neuraxial or intravenous opioids, oral opioids are often required as part of a multimodal regimen.

Full text
Abstract:
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) affects approximately 1 in 2,500 live births and results from an embryologic defect in diaphragm formation allowing abdominal contents to enter the fetal pleural cavity. Prognosis and treatment options vary depending on the extent and location of the diaphragmatic hernia, but CDH remains a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Anesthesia for neonatal repair of CDH can be involved, as patients often have many organ systems affected by their disease process.

Abstract:
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) has entered the mainstream of linguistic and social science research with a strong transdisciplinary orientation and social engagement. This chapter introduces six variants of CDA: (1) Fairclough’s approach, which is strongly social theoretically embedded and informed by systemic functional linguistics; (2) van Leeuwen’s and Kress’s social semiotic and systemic functional approach; (3) van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach; (4) the form of CDA promoted by the Duisburg Group around S. and M. Jäger, who keenly draw on Foucault’s approach to discourse analysis and Link’s discourse theory; (5) the Oldenburg approach, which is upheld by Gloy, Januschek, and others; and (6) the “Viennese” and “Lancaster” traditions of CDA, often termed the “discourse historical approach” and sometimes “discourse sociolinguistics.”

Abstract:
This chapter provides a defense of a type of occupational pension, known as “collective defined contribution” (CDC), which is based on the idea that it is possible to limit the employer’s liability to nothing more than a set contribution (a “defined contribution”) while retaining many of the benefits of the collectivization (pooling) of risks of a traditional defined benefit (DB) pension. CDC can be defended against a freedom-based objection from the right via an appeal to the following Hobbesian voluntarist justification: CDC constitutes a “Leviathan of Leviathans” into which it is rational for workers to choose to associate in order to tame longevity and investment risks. CDC pensions that arise from and mirror existing income inequalities can also be defended against an egalitarian objection from the left, by demonstration that they can be grounded in Rawlsian principles of reciprocity and property-owning democracy.

Abstract:
Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) are usually diagnosed during infancy or childhood with severe multisystem disorder and neurologic presentation. With the increasing number of surviving adult patients, recognition of the distinct adult phenotype and awareness of the diagnostic difficulties in adulthood is essential. Patients with O-glycosylation defects or with abnormal dolichol synthesis might present first in adulthood. The majority of cases with adult CDG have a neurologic disease with intellectual disability, ataxia, speech disorder, visual disturbance, and skeletal findings. Psychological abnormalities are also common. Thrombotic complications and endocrine dysfunction might persist to adulthood. MPI-CDG, the only treatable form of CDG, might progress to chronic liver failure. Genetic testing is recommended in suspected cases, since transferrin screening analysis can be normal in adults, even in N-linked glycosylation disorders.
