Abstract:
The label Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is used by a significant number of scholars with a diverse set of concerns in a number of disciplines. It is well-exemplified by the editorial statement of the journal Discourse and Society, which defines its envisaged domain of enquiry as follows: “the reproduction of sexism and racism through discourse; the legitimation of power; the manufacture of consent; the role of politics, education and the media; the discursive reproduction of dominance relation between groups; the imbalances in international communication and information.” While some practitioners of Critical Discourse Analysis might want to amend this list here or there, the set of concerns sketched here well describes the field of CDA. The only comment I would make, a comment crucial for many practitioners of CDA, is to insist that these phenomena are to be found in the most unremarkable and everyday of texts—and not only in texts which declare their special status in some way. This scope, and the overtly political agenda, serves to set CDA off on the one hand from other kinds of discourse analysis, and from textlinguistics (as well as from pragmatics and sociolinguistics) on the other.

Abstract:
The paper explained the use of critical visual analysis for understanding and contextualizing the images as well as applied the theories of visual consumption and social semiotics to analyze certain visual materials. Furthermore, this study examined the visual representations of refugees and immigrants who faced atrocities at the time of the partition of the Subcontinent along with the Mongol leader who was responsible for the largest empire in history. The research aimed at answering the question related to the significance of visual communication and critical visual analysis for comprehending those visuals. The paper used qualitative methods of research to answer the research question. Critical visual analysis helps not only in describing the physical features of the images but also in interpreting the notion and meaning behind the visuals. In todays technologically advanced world, visuals have gained prominence in the aspects of advertisement and meaning explanation. Therefore, critical visual analysis is paramount in this era.

Abstract:
This study examines the benefits of data envelopment analysis (DEA) in evaluating the performance of decision making units (DMUs). DEA is a mathematical programming tool applied in performance measurement. The problem identified is establishing business support units as value adding business units. A case is made for applying DEA when evaluating the performance of such business support units. To this end, a literature review of the results of applications of DEA to the evaluation of information technology and purchasing supply chain management functions was conducted. The findings indicate the benefits of DEA are that the method identifies efficient performers in a given population and, therefore, allows for benchmarking against the ’best in class’ performer. This as opposed to more commonly used parametric methods, such as regression analysis, which result in a comparator that represents the average performance for a given population, therefore, allowing only for measurement against the average. In addition, the findings indicate that in respect of business support units, the DEA methodology allows for the incorporation of intermediate outcomes, which facilitates the measurement of the contribution of these units to overall company performance. Although the DEA methodology has been widely applied, it is still not as well known or generally applied as the more common approaches. The recommendations made in this paper will be beneficial in bringing DEA to the attention of decision-makers. The recommendations will also raise awareness of the potential benefits to be realised when applying the method in developing performance measurement frameworks for business support units. Keywords: performance measurement, data envelopment analysis, decision making units, business support units. JEL Classification: C61, L25

Abstract:
The article highlights the modern perspectives of statistics as a science and its role in various fields of human activity. The article is based on the analysis of current trends in the development of statistics, as well as its significance in the era of the digital revolution and the information age. The prospects of statistics as a science are incredibly promising and diverse, covering different fields and industries. Through a broad analysis of current trends and achievements, this article sheds light on the development of statistics and its potential impact on shaping the future. As a result of the study, the main prospects for the development of statistics as a science and a field of practical activity were determined, and the key aspects emphasizing its importance were formulated. It has been proven that statistics is a dynamic, evolving discipline with enormous potential for innovation, discovery, and impact on society. The critical analysis of statistical problems and urgent tasks that arise in wartime has been provided. The role of statistics in those military actions is considered, and the application of statistical methods to strategic and tactical decision-making is analyzed. In times of war, statistics face numerous challenges that can complicate the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. During conflict, the role of statistics becomes paramount in informing decision-making, resource allocation, and assessing the impact of military action. However, applying statistical methods in wartime poses unique challenges, from collecting data in a hostile environment to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of analysis in the face of uncertainty and misinformation. This article examines the multifaceted challenges that arise when using statistics in wartime scenarios, highlighting the implications for military strategy, humanitarian efforts, and postwar reconstruction. By addressing these challenges, statisticians can make a significant contribution to improving the effectiveness and ethical conduct of operations in conflict zones. The prospects for further research in the study of indirect methods and the use of alternative sources of data collection, for the full realization of the functions of statistics in wartime conditions is substantiated.

This paper introduces the potentials of crossing critical rhetoric and Critical Discourse Analysis in analyzing public discourse concerning one of the “corona topics”, namely institutional communication about the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The application of two complementary theoretical frameworks reveals discourse negotiation and naturalization of power and ideology in a persuasive discursive practice of issuing successive contradictory messages regarding the vaccine’s safety.
