Abstract:
Haitian literature locked itself for almost a century in patriotism and nationalism for socio-historical reasons. The rejection of her independence by the West, questionable judicial and diplomatic transactions, social and political instabilities all characterized 19th century Haiti. At the end of the 19th century a new generation of writers opted for reinvention, advocating a shift from national affairs, most especially the nationalist trend. They turned towards universalism. Consequently, a total reshuffle of Haitian thinking and vision followed and the repercussions of this will be felt in areas of international relations with nations which at one point were not considered friends. Haiti in search of her roots, as Etzer Vilaire specifically clings on to the Latin roots while rejecting and at times denying its African roots

Abstract:
The education system in the United States has historically repressed and marginalized Native cultures and languages. This has led to the alarming decline of Native language use, including the extinction of many languages. Current programs to revitalize these languages face a number of obstacles, many stemming from historical precedents of cultural genocide and negative attitudes toward Native cultures. This study examines the external issues that face language revitalization programs of Warm Springs, Grand Ronde, and Klamath in Oregon, and concludes that most originate from a dominant ideology that marginalizes Native histories and cultures by ignoring, patronizing, or actively resisting them.

Durand, Sedelia Rodriguez. "Origin of the Grande Ronde Formation flows, Columbia River Flood Basalt Group." FIU Digital Commons, 2006. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3105.

Full text
Abstract:
Lavas belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation (GRB) constitute about 63% of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG), a flood basalt province in the NW United States. A puzzling feature is the lack of phenocrysts (< 5%) in these chemically evolved lavas. Based mainly on this observation it has been hypothesized that GRB lavas were nearly primary melts generated by large-scale melting of eclogite. Another recent hypothesis holds that GRB magmas were extremely hydrous and rose rapidly from the mantle such that the dissolved water kept the magmas close to their liquidi. I present new textural and chemical evidence to show that GRB lavas were neither primary nor hydrous melts but were derived from other melts via efficient fractional crystallization and mixing in shallow intrusive systems. Texture and chemical features further suggest that the melt mixing process may have been exothermic, which forced variable melting of some of the existing phenocrysts. Finally, reported here are the results of efforts to simulate the higher pressure histories of GRB using COMAGMAT and MELTS softwares. The intent was to evaluate (1) whether such melts could be derived from primary melts formed by partial melting of a peridotite source as an alternative to the eclogite model, or if bulk melting of eclogite is required; and (2) at what pressure such primary melts could have been in equilibrium with the mantle. I carried out both forward and inverse modeling. The best fit forward model indicates that most primitive parent melts related to GRB could have been multiply saturated at ~1.5-2.0 GPa. I interpret this result to indicate that the parental melts last equilibrated with a peridotitic mantle at 1.5-2.0 GPa and such partial melts rose to ~0.2 GPa where they underwent efficient mixing and fractionation before erupting. These models suggest that the source rock was not eclogitic but a fertile spinel lherzolite, and that the melts had ~0.5% water.

Combes, Annie. Paris 3, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA030036.

Full text
Abstract:
The anonymous lancelot, a novel without a title (in the oldest ms), unamenable to the notion of cycle, bases its autonomy on the relationship it establishes with its intertext. Its lack of external identity reveals the importance of an internal structuring narrowly connected to the works it used as models. The novel builds up its coherence in the combination of three narrative types : the first one is linked to war scenes, the second is illustrated by chivalrous adventures, the third corresponds to crisis situations. The balance of the novel rests on the complementary of the first two types which stem from two large intertexts : wace and g. De monmouth's arthurian chronicles as well as ch. De troyes's novels. A historiographic time coming from the former combines itself with a biographical time stemming from the chevalier de la charrette. This structuring is strengthened by the superposition of a mythical time linked to the theme of the grail and built up from the conte du graal, from its continuations and from r. De boron's trilogie. The arthurian world passed on by tradition is transformed by this combination of time vectors, the effect of which is visible on the characters' status as well as on the form of the adventures (dealt in a special chapter). The rewriting mechanisms are unveiled through these analysis : the adaptation of the chronicles, the transposition of the chevalier de la charrette, the reconstruction of the genealogical models existing around the fisher king, the recomposition of the scenes connected to the grail. . . These transformations, magnified by the interplay of competing versions and interpolations, define an aesthetics of variance, factor of novelistic proliferation. The interlace, which can be understood through a comparison with the works of villehardouin and r. De clari, appears to be a principle of articulation used to connect profuse adventures and to strengthen the coherence of a mostly dialogical novel

James-Raoul, Danièle. "La parole empêchée dans la littérature arthurienne." Paris 4, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA040148.

Full text
Abstract:
The arthurian romances are elaborated out of a kind of game on communication being broken or failing which the here will be commissioned to restore, clarify or impose. The ancient fund of celtic mythology together which tradition and variety of psychological and social codes combine to weig in turn upon the heroes' longues, thus makinf the hindered speech - in manifgold facets - onr of the central motifs of arthurian literature. It is all the more evident as the impeded world always sets its seal to the human destiny from sheere silence to a sibylin ot veiled discourse or else a temporarily impossibl utlerance: it is afantastic stepping-stone to the attainment of knowledge, to the happy development of personality, and to the revival of genuine and promising speech a recall of the divine model. Repress the flow of speech and it tells better: actually this is what all those romances paradoxically teach and this lesson is to foundin their advancingnarrative as well as in their rhetoric. Indeed, the writers themselves constantly seem to restain their discourse, to stopi to hold it in; but is pnlu have it guessed, or even supplied by the reader following an infernal process of addition. The paradox which appears between the huge amount of writing in the arthurian literature and the way words are refrained stands merely as a semblance: when performed in the fiction of romances the speech keeps being hindered and therefore the stream of the words used in the arthurien book runs endlessly
