Full textBoth works have been written at the same period, trois generations in 1931 and les thibault from 1920 to 1938. Most of all, these novels should be defined as family novels. They both point out the slow agony of a certain traditional "bourgeoisie" (catholic as well as confucianist) and the evolution of the new generation facing and social constraints, of the declining world at the century's outset

Full textIn the eight novels Les Thibault by Roger Martin du Gard (published between 1922 to 1940), the author addresses the reader and describes the world in which the former lives. The objective of this thesis is to examine Martin du Gard’s discourse with respect to some aspects of the multilateral relationships between society, author and oeuvre. R.M.G’s novels informed society of his time and were themselves shaped by society. The author moulded by society then constructs a fictional world. The relationships in Les Thibault are autobiographical in nature whether familial, gender, social or religious and these constitute the principal means of understanding the oeuvre and the author’s own life.To evaluate the reception of Roger Martin du Gard’s work among the Chinese public, the final part of this thesis analyses the two translations of Les Thibault, published in China in the 1980s. Comparison with a Chinese trilogy, Torrent (Family – Spring – Autumn, 1932-1940), by Ba Jin (Pa Kin), although very different but which also considers family and social relationships, allows consideration of how Roger Martin du Gard’s message crosses frontiers and reflects universal concerns, those of humanity itself

Full textTo mingle History and fiction may seem peculiar. Nevertheless, in a literary novel the writer can draw freely in these two domains, in order to give the closest vision of the world which he carries within himself. Les Thibault and Argo are two typical examples of novels in which History constitutes an inherent part of the plot. It gives to the heroes an unquestionable plausibility, it is the background in which they move, and the power which destroys them in the end. In their effort to insert History in the novels, authors appeal to different techniques. We will see how they use two basic elements of the writing, the characters and the documents, and how through them they bring to light an era with its crises, its problems, its hopes and its deceptions. Although History is integrated in the plot, its presentation is marked by the subjectivity of the writers. By analyzing characters and documents, we perceive the limits of their objectivity and the signs of their commitment, of their position in the society. In the hands of the writers History becomes an excuse for asking questions about the human condition, and shows his impossible emancipation from multiple and inevitable constraints

Full textThere is no doubt that plenty has been said about the place of mathematics and poetry in the work of Jacques Lacan. On the one hand mathematics is often convoked as a heuristic tool for psychoanalysis. On the other, many books have been written in order to clarify the relationship between psychoanalysis and poetry. However, references to the articulation of poetry and mathematics remain marginal. After an epistemological and ontological problematisation of this articulation in Lacan’s work, we explore the different links that Lacan makes between science and psychoanalysis. Here we find two platforms where Lacan mobilises an approach to poetry and mathematics. The first one is the mathem as an alternative to the heideggerian poem, a shift that allows a deontologization of psychoanalysis. The second one consists of Plato’s evicted poets repatriation to the psychoanalytical field. Taking into account what Freud said about both disciplines –especially poetry– we trace the trajectory of the usages and functions of mathematics in relation to the poetic elements that Lacan developed throughout his work in order to discuss its theoretical, practical and clinical pertinence. As such, this research is structured in two sections consisting of four parts each. The first one, entitled Mathematics or Mathem stands for Formalisation, Mathem, Diagrams and Mathematical objects/themes. The second one, entitled Poetry or Poem, is composed of four subsets: Literature, Art, Aesthetics and Creation. Finally, we expose three “cases” of articulation between Mathem and Poem extracted from Lacan’s work

Thesis, Paris 4, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA040083.
Full text“I don’t see why a girl like Nanette should be blamed for profiting from the madness and extreme disorderly conduct of your libertines, in order to set the highest price to her person and her art,” Wieland’s Leontion says to herself. This “extreme disorderly conduct” is only one of the characteristics of that kind of carefree existence which is an expression of the triumph of libertine mores at a time when the fascination of European societies for libertinism, whether real or imaginary, is reflected in English, French and German Literature. The following thesis thus demonstrates the diversity of libertine literature in Europe in the second half of the XVIIIth century. In order to analyse this diversity and compare its different aspects, I have chosen three epistolary novels that I consider to be paradigms in the matter: Clarissa Harlowe by Richardson in England, Les Liaisons dangereuses by Laclos in France and Menander und Glycerion by Wieland in Germany. The implicit or explicit judgement that these three authors pass on the laws of social order, on religion, and on the mores of the period is emblematic of an original vision of the world. Although this vision is expressed within the limits of works of fiction, the study of these works highlights a number of elements that are specific to the social and political atmosphere of the time, as well as certain autobiographical elements which have contributed to the social paradigm of feminine and masculine libertinism to which they subscribe. The purpose of this thesis is to study these literary works as rich sources of information on the libertines and their conduct as an accepted social model for men and women alike, and to discuss the complexity and singular nature of this phenomenon by a differential treatment of the various themes through which it can be identified

Full textThe present thesis is an interpretative study of Sports et Divertissements, edition de luxe which combines music and texts by Erik Satie and pochoir illustrations by Charles Martin. Given the highly intertextual character of the work, Sports et Divertissements is seen under the notion of total art, extended to livres de peintres and livres d’artistes as well as in the artistic context of its creation (notably fashion and its illustration and art deco books) that occurred during and after the 1st World War.Initially conceived by its editor Lucien Vogel, and appearing on a first version in 1914, Sports et Divertissements didn’t take its final form until 1923, in a total revision of the illustrations by Charles Martin. The thesis attempts to show the maximal narrative efficacity of this final version, in terms of correspondence among literary, musical and visual elements in the temporality of the work, as well as in its global visual aspect, through a creative and dramaturgical process of the imagination

At the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, museums sought to revitalise their image with the aim to attract increasingly diversified audiences. The general view of the Internet as a democratic force in western societies lead institutions to consider it as an opportunity to acquire new audiences through participation which was thought to foster emancipation and dialogue. Enthused, museums thus acquire internet artworks and some even commission them in order to inaugurate newly developed media arts programs. For what reasons? Our case studies provide an answer to this question, along with a cultural analysis of artworks, annual reports, press releases and other pertinent documents: Ding an sich (The Canon Series) by Piotr Szyhalski acquired by the Walker Art Center; Uncomfortable Proximity by Graham Harwood commissioned by the Tate; IdeaLine by Martin Wattenberg presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art. We found that these artworks are at the intersection of converging interests on the part of the institutional and business worlds as they are presented in online infrastructure developed in close collaboration with the technological industry. To this industry artworks are enticing as they offer an opportunity to expose a favourable clientele to its products; to the institution artworks are an asset to attract expert business partners able to enhance the online museum brand in the eyes of audiences. As such, artworks are located in hybrid spaces: between exhibition and information spaces, between artistic purpose and democratising discourse, between collection and philanthropy. At these crossroads, artworks take a sharp look at the conditions and dynamics that underlie their arrival. In the face of connoted discourses, they conceptualise the technological industry not as hegemonic commercial authority but as theoretical apparatus, rich with thematic strategies and operating modes ripe for dismantling, diverting, reversing, and criticising.

Full textThis Master’s thesis deals with the works of artists Sophie Calle, Sylvie Cotton, Donigan Cumming, Martin Dufrasne, and Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf. The objective of this research is to observe the back and forth explored by the artists in their practices between the private and the public sphere and how these problematize our relationship with intimacy. In the first chapter, I will determine the elements that respectively characterize the public and the private space, and then find the places and forms that define intimacy. In the second chapter, I will examine the private sphere's appropriation gestures and methods employed by the artists through a study of collecting, ethnographic, and surveillance practices. I will underline the impact of such practices on the artists' investment in time and their implication in contextual art. Finally, I will deliberate on my very own practices, considering how they differentiate or resemble the practices of the artists studied in this memoir.
