Abstract:
Early age marriages have become widely reported through various media both print and electronic media, because early marriage is one of the causes of divorce in Indonesia. Divorce due to early marriage raises social problems in the community, such as high dropout rates for students, poverty, crime. The emergence of early marriage is caused by the low awareness of adolescents to understand Law number 1 of 1974 concerning marriage. This study discusses the understanding of law number 1 of 1974 concerning marriages which plays a role for adolescents to postpone early marriage in Indonesia. This research method uses a quantitative approach, involving 213 adolescent subjects with an age range of 17-22 years. Retrieval of data using a questionnaire that is the attitude of understanding marriage law, life satisfaction, resilience, and delaying early marriage. Analysis of research data using Spearman RHO correlation and non-linear regression. The results showed that the attitude of understanding marital law plays a role in delaying early marriage in adolescents in Indonesia.

Abstract:
Underage marriage is a marriage bond between a man and a woman, where the age of both or one of them has not reached the limits stipulated in Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 16 of 2019 in conjunction with Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 1974 about Marriage. Underage marriage is one of the legal acts that is not justified by the law of marriage. However, in reality in Empat Lawang Regency it is still practiced, and even the number of underage marriages is still high. The formulation of the problems in this study were: (1) How was the underage marriage in Empat Lawang Regency viewed from the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 16 of 2019 in conjunction with Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 1974 about Marriage? (2) What were the factors causing the high rate of underage marriage in Empat Lawang Regency? (3) How was the impact of underage marriage on the harmony of domestic life? The research method applied in this study was juridical empirical. The results of this study indicated that: (1) Underage marriage in Empat Lawang Regency had been carried out according to Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 16 of 2019 in conjunction with Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage, if the prospective husband and wife had not met the requirements as regulated in the Law, then the prospective husband and wife must apply for dispensation to the Religious Court for approval of marriage permits. (2) The factors causing the high rate of underage marriages in Empat Lawang Regency consisted of being pregnant outside of marriage (married by accident), worrying that their child will fall into promiscuity, pressure from parents, lack of economic stability, desire of lasting relationship, family traditions, lack of parental supervision of children, lack of sex education, and parental mindset. (3) The impact of underage marriage on the harmony of household life was the difficulty to form such a harmonious household.

Abstract:
Marriage protects against loneliness, but not all marriages are equally protective. While marriage is a highly interdependent relationship, loneliness in marital dyads has received very little research attention. Unlike most studies proposing that positive and negative marital qualities independently affect loneliness at the individual level, we used a contextual approach to characterize each partner’s ratings of the marriage as supportive (high support, low strain), ambivalent (high support, high strain), indifferent (low support, low strain), or aversive (low support, high strain) and examined how these qualities associate with own and partner’s loneliness. Using couple data from the Wave II National Social Life, Health and Aging Project ( N = 953 couples), we found that more than half of the older adults live in an ambivalent, indifferent, or aversive marriage. Actor–partner interdependence models showed that positive and negative marital qualities synergistically predict couple loneliness. Spouses in aversive marriages are lonelier than their supportively married counterparts (actor effect), and that marital aversion increases the loneliness of their partners (partner effect). In addition, wives (but not husbands) in indifferent marriages are lonelier than their supportively married counterparts. These effects of poor marital quality on loneliness were not ameliorated by good relationships with friends and relatives. Results highlight the prominent role of the marriage relationship for imbuing a sense of connectedness among older adults and underscore the need for additional research to identify strategies to help older adults optimize their marital relationship.

Abstract:
Density-dependent and extrinsic mortality are predicted to accelerate reproductive maturation. The first 5 years of life is a proposed sensitive period for life-history regulation. This study examines the ways in which local mortality during this sensitive period was related to subsequent marriage timing in nineteenth-century Belgium ( n women = 11 892; n men = 14 140). Local mortality during the sensitive period was inversely associated with age at first marriage for men and women controlling for literacy, occupational status, population growth and migration. Cox regression indicated decreased time to marriage for women (HR = 1.661, 95% CI: 1.542–1.789) and men (HR = 1.327, 95% CI: 1.238–1.422) from high mortality municipalities. Rising population growth rates were associated with earlier marriage for men and women. Migration in general was associated with later marriage for men and women. Consistent with life-history predictions, harsh ecological conditions during early life such as famine coincided with earlier marriage.

Abstract:
The initiation of the RUU Nikah Siri aims to tighten the siri marriage itself, with the hope of minimizing the number of victims, namely the number of women and their children who are victims of "the practice of siri marriage". However, the fact is that there are not a few couples who prefer to carry out unregistered marriages, especially the lower middle class, this is influenced by limited knowledge of the law, the impact it will cause and the high cost of official weddings through the government not to mention the dowry and party fees that must be issued by the bride and groom. In Indonesia, the number of women is greater than men, which eronically, the number of female illiteracy rates is still twice that of men, especially since the development models designed and used do not always pay attention to the relationship between women and men. Therefore strengthening women is very important, through improving the quality of soft skills and life skills based on skills and technology as well as home industry-based skills, it will be an alternative to sustainable economic empowerment as a way out or an alternative method of eroding the culture of siri marriage.

Abstract:
<p align="center"><em>This article explains the concept of Islamic guidance and counselling to help high school students build readiness for marriage and having family life. Marriage and family life readiness is one of aspects in Competency Standards of Independence (SKK) that must be achieved by students at high school level. This concept is similar to the phases and tasks of adolescent development which begin to enter the early adult development phase. The researchers did not find any particularly studies that discuss the concept of Islamic guidance and counseling to help marriage readiness and family life for high school students. Despite the fact that the theme is important to be discussed for further elucidation, the problems eventuates among adolescents, such as premarital sex. The research is conducted by library research method. To support information requirements, researchers also conduct document observations and in-depth interviews with marriage counselor in Religious Affairs Office (KUA), high school principals, as well as high school guidance counselor and school counselor. The concept of guidance and counselling answers the need and solutions to the problems of adults at the high school level. This also helps to understand family life responsibilities and functions, the concept of reproductive health, what appropriate sexual behaviour is, family norms and relationships between family members.</em></p>

Abstract:
SummaryTurkey has high levels of infant mortality and consanguineous marriages. It has had a high level of infant mortality for its economic level for many years. Over recent decades, although adult mortality rates have not been very different from those of other countries with similar socioeconomic structures, its life expectancy at birth has remained low due to its high infant mortality rate. This has been called the Turkish Puzzle. According to the Turkey Family Structure and Population Issues Survey, 27% of women had a consanguineous marriage in 1968. Subsequent Turkish Demographic and Health Surveys (TDHSs) found the rate of consanguineous marriages to be stagnated at 22–24%, with a resistance to reduction. According to the TDHS-2008, 24% of women had a consanguineous marriage. Numerous studies in various countries of the world have indicated that consanguineous marriages, particularly of first-degree, have the effect of increasing infant mortality. The main aim of this study was to assess the causal impact of consanguineous, particularly first-degree consanguineous, marriages on infant mortality, controlling for individual, cultural, bio-demographic and environmental factors. Data were merged from four Turkish DHS data sets (1993, 1998, 2003 and 2008). Multivariate analysis revealed that first-degree consanguineous marriages have increased infant mortality by 45% in Turkey: 57% in urban areas and 39% in rural areas. The results indicate that there is a causal relationship between consanguineous marriages and infant mortality. This finding should be taken into account when planning policies to reduce infant mortality in Turkey, and in other countries with high rates of consanguineous marriage and infant mortality.

Abstract:
We document key facts about marriage and divorce, comparing trends through the past 150 years and outcomes across demographic groups and countries. While divorce rates have risen over the past 150 years, they have been falling for the past quarter century. Marriage rates have also been falling, but more strikingly, the importance of marriage at different points in the life cycle has changed, reflecting rising age at first marriage, rising divorce followed by high remarriage rates, and a combination of increased longevity with a declining age gap between husbands and wives. Cohabitation has also become increasingly important, emerging as a widely used step on the path to marriage. Out-ofwedlock fertility has also risen, consistent with declining “shotgun marriages”. Compared with other countries, marriage maintains a central role in American life. We present evidence on some of the driving forces causing these changes in the marriage market: the rise of the birth control pill and women's control over their own fertility; sharp changes in wage structure, including a rise in inequality and partial closing of the gender wage gap; dramatic changes in home production technologies; and the emergence of the Internet as a new matching technology. We note that recent changes in family forms demand a reassessment of theories of the family and argue that consumption complementarities may be an increasingly important component of marriage. Finally, we discuss how these facts should inform family policy debates.

Abstract:
West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is recorded as a province with a fairly high rate of young marriage (merariq kodek), especially in East Lombok then North Lombok. Many factors cause underage marriages, including factors due to love, economic factors, matchmaking factors, dropping out of school, and pregnancy outside of marriage. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family social and economic life on early marriage. The method used is a quantitative method with a descriptive approach, in general there are 33 samples (respondents) but after using the sample calculation technique with the Slovin formula, 30 respondents can be drawn, the respondents consist of various backgrounds of married age, different occupations. All data were processed by multiple regression analysis by looking at the validity test, reliability, classical assumption test (data normality test, multicollinearity test, and heteroscedasticity test) and hypothesis testing using the F test and t test. The results of this study indicate that there is an influence of family social and economic life on early marriage. This is indicated by the simultaneous test results of F count of Early Marriage at (45.191) with a probability level (0.000) which means that together the Social and Economic Life of the Family has a share in influencing Early Marriage in the hamlets of Penyenggir, Manggong and Batu Gapit. 3) From the significant test it is also proven that each independent variable also has a significant effect on the dependent variable. Social life variable (X1) has a significant influence on early marriage in the villages of Penyenggir, Manggong and Batu Gapit. This is indicated by t count (4.537) with p value (sig) 0.000 smaller than 0.05, meaning that social life has a role in influencing early marriage in the village of West Sikur. The family economic variable (X2) also has a significant effect on early marriage in the village of West Sikur. This is indicated by t count (3.735) with a p value (sig) of 0.001, which is below 0.05, which means that the family economy has a role in influencing early marriage in the hamlets of Penyenggir, Manggong and Batu Gapit.

Wood, Natasha. "Marriage and physical capability at mid to later life." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2016. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1532864/.

Abstract:
Research has shown that married men and women have better physical and psychological health and greater longevity than their unmarried counterparts. However, the past 50 years have witnessed changes in the marriage and divorce rates, resulting in more people at older ages who are unmarried or with varied relationship histories. Given the strong association between marriage and health there could potentially be more people at older ages in poorer health, which may be particularly detrimental given the ageing population. Whilst there is much research looking at marriage and physical and psychological health there is little on marriage and physical capability. Physical capability is the capacity to perform the physical tasks of daily living and is predictive of mortality and future social care use. This PhD investigates the relationship between marriage and physical capability at mid to later life using two measures – grip strength and walking speed – from two nationally representative datasets of people aged 50 years and over in England and the USA. Cross-sectional associations between marriage and physical capability are investigated in a comparative analysis between England and the USA, and longitudinal associations through examining changes in walking speed over a ten year period in England. A descriptive analysis of early life circumstances and its association with entry into and exit out of marriage in England and the USA is also carried out. Findings show that married people had both higher levels of current physical capability and a slower decline in physical capability over time than their unmarried counterparts. Much of the “marriage advantage” is explained by their greater wealth, but there were some unexplained associations, particularly among widowed men. There were few gender and country differences in the association. The results of this thesis suggest that marriage is important for maintaining physical capability for people at mid to later life in England and the USA.

Fawcett, Elizabeth Brinton. "Is Marriage Education Effective? A Meta-Analytic Review of Marriage Education Programs." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2007. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1053.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past few decades, several meta-analytic studies have attempted to answer the question: Is marriage education effective (Carroll & Doherty, 2003; Halford, Markman, Kline & Stanley, 2003; Reardon-Anderson, Stagner, Macomber, & Murray, 2004)? However, previous meta-analytic studies have been somewhat limited in their conclusions because they have reviewed a narrow portion of the marriage education spectrum (e.g. premarital education only, Carroll & Doherty, 2003), because they focused only on one particular program (e.g, Couples Communication, Butler & Wampler, 1999), because they failed to differentiate marital therapy from marital education programs (Reardon-Anderson et al., 2005), or because they excluded much of the mainstream of marriage education due to methodological restrictions (e.g, random assignment studies only, Reardon-Anderson et al., 2005). The current meta-analysis is uniquely qualified to better answer whether marriage education is effective. It examines the full range of marital education from marriage preparation to early marriage and across the marital life span. It excludes studies that evaluate therapy programs and interventions, thus providing a more focused test of marriage education rather than a broader test of marriage intervention. It also allows for analysis of programs more representative of the mainstream of marriage education as it is currently practiced. Finally, this work employed more rigorous statistical techniques than had been done with previous meta-analyses. Sixty-nine marriage education evaluation reports were included in this meta analysis; fifteen additional articles were not code-able, but were analyzed conceptually. Articles were coded by design and results are reported according to study design. Quantitative results showed that across methodology, sample and program type, marriage education has moderate positive effects on marital satisfaction/quality and communication. These effects remain at follow-up evaluations. Effects were strongest for couples married longer than five years and for communication-training programs. Subgroups of studies generally were too small to examine many moderator variables. In addition, study samples were predominately White, well-educated, middle-class couples. Although this meta analysis provides the strongest answer to date on the effectiveness of marriage education, increased exploration and evaluation of moderator variables are needed before we will know which types of interventions are most effective for which couples.

Abstract:
Background: Hemoglobinopathies are among the most common inherited genetic diseases. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 5% of the world’s population are carriers for hemoglobinopathies (2.9% for thalassemia and 2.3% for sickle cell disease). Programs like premarital screening (PMS) have been developed in most Middle East countries on a mandatory basis to reduce atrisk marriages by providing counseling after a confirmed “genetic carrier” state for hemoglobinopathies. Aim/Objective: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of atrisk marriages globally and see the variation by region, income level, ethnicity, study period, implementation year of PMS program, study design and consanguinity proportion. Methods: Different databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus were searched systematically by using key terms and MeSH Terms. Studies from Google Scholar and reference lists of studies were also collected, and the author extracted all relevant data. Two reviewers independently conducted quality assessment by using Hoy et al (2012) risk of bias tool. Quality effects model (QEM) was used due to considerable heterogeneity observed between studies. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were also performed for assessing the causes of heterogeneity. Results: A total of 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of at-risk marriages among total couples at-risk was 64% (95% CI: 49%- 78%). Estimates of several subgroups were found to be different as compared to the overall pooled estimate. Funnel plot and Doi plot indicated the presence of publication bias. Sensitivity analysis including only studies with low risk led to a pooled estimate of 52% (CI: 46%, 57%) and indicated absence of publication bias. Conclusion and recommendations: The pooled estimates varied widely and there was a substantial heterogeneity among studies, therefore, there is a need for more well-designed studies across different countries. Moreover, the importance of the quality of counseling sessions should be stressed and combined with efforts in other community sectors, such as high schools where students can attain high knowledge regarding genetic diseases before the age of marriage.

Abstract:
The Republic of Kazakhstan is one of those countries that declared their independency after collapse of former Soviet Union. It tries to implement the market economy. The petroleum sector is one of the top of the rapidly developing economic sectors. But it is not a labor intensive sector. Poverty and unemployment are the main socioeconomic problems. The level of the wages is low throughout the country. Even though poverty exhibits tendency to drop, it prevails in the rural area. In our study, socio-economic structure, organization, working relations, social-cultural life, consumers’ characteristics, and problems of bazaar tradesman in the Turkistan city are being introduced. The average of age of 66% of Turkistan bazaar tradesman, most of them are women, is between 20 and 40, the rate of marriage for 6-11 years is 30%, average number of children is 3, schooling rate is 100%. Turkistan bazaar tradesman’s saving habit is 24%, percentage of insured ones is 6%, the percentage of them who take advantage of laws that arrange the working life is 27%. Although the Republic of Kazakhstan has a large land, it has population problems. Literacy level is high with the rate of 98%. Policies in favor of increasing the number of population are being followed. The increase of the number of the children in the family is being encouraged. Policies for bringing the Kazakh citizens who live abroad and reaches up to 5-6 million into the country are being followed.

Abstract:
Aim: We aim to estimate the global prevalence of consanguinity among the ASD families and compare that among different populations. Methods: Meta-analysis of observational studies reporting prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families was searched systematically in important databases including EMBASE, PubMed and Academic Search Complete. Individual studies were screened by two reviewers independently, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a risk of bias tool (Hoy’s tool). Random Effect model was used to calculate pooled weighted estimates due to considerable heterogeneity. Subgroups analysis was also calculated. Results: 10 publications were identified based on our inclusion criteria from 8 different countries, 4 of them were from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the rest were from: Lebanon (2 studies), Egypt, Jordan, Iran, and Israel). Studies varied in ASD cases numbers as it ranged between 49 -500, and the total ASD individuals in all studies were 1581. All studies address consanguinity among the ASD families despite the variation in the methods. The pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families was 24% Subgroup analysis by the study country led to a higher pooled estimate of consanguinity of 38% in the GCC countries compared to other than GCC countries with a pooled estimate of 16%. In addition, the overall odd ratio calculated from the case-control studies included in our meta-analysis was 1.5. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis that studied the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families worldwide. Children born to consanguineous parents have been reported to have lower social behavior and cognitive ability, which are the main problems with ASD children. Our study qualitatively reviewed the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families throughout the world and 10 eligible studies from eight countries were identified. We quantitatively synthesized the results and the key findings of this study showed a 24% overall pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families. GCC countries showed a high estimated pooled prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families as 38% compared to countries other than GCC 16%, which was higher than our overall pooled prevalence. This high estimate among GCC countries can be related to the high rates of consanguineous marriage in the GCC countries compared to the worldwide rates (20%). In Qatar, the rate of consanguineous marriage reported as 54%. This high rates among GCC countries may be due to factors like rooted cultural beliefs, social life and customs in addition to, economic benefits of keeping wealth within the families. Conclusion: The globally estimated pooled consanguinity prevalence among ASD patients was 24%, GCC countries showed a higher pooled prevalence (38%)

In ASME 1994 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/94-gt-201.

Abstract:
Active magnetic bearings provide revolutionary advantages for gas turbine engine rotor support. These advantages include tremendously improved vibration and stability characteristics, reduced power loss, improved reliability, fault-tolerance, and greatly extended bearing service life. The marriage of these advantages with innovative structural network design and advanced materials utilization will permit major increases in thrust to weight performance and structural efficiency for future gas turbine engines. However, obtaining the maximum payoff requires two key ingredients. The first key ingredient is the use of modern magnetic bearing technologies such as innovative digital control techniques, high-density power electronics, high-density magnetic actuators, fault-tolerant system architecture, and electronic (sensorless) position estimation. This paper describes these technologies and the test hardware currently in place for verifying the performance of advanced magnetic actuators, power electronics and digital controls. The second key ingredient is to go beyond the simple replacement of rolling element bearings with magnetic bearings by incorporating magnetic bearings as an integral part of the overall engine design. This is analogous to the proper approach to designing with composites, whereby the designer tailors the geometry and load carrying function of the structural system or component for the composite instead of simply substituting composites in a design originally intended for metal material. This paper describes methodologies for the design integration of magnetic bearings in gas turbine engines.

Abstract:
The article presents a general description of the demographic situation in the Republic of Moldova at the beginning of the XXI century (negative population growth), a comparative analysis with the previous period is carried out, the main factors contributing to the deterioration of demographic indicators are analyzed: a decrease in the birth rate, an increase in mortality rates – causes and effects, migration outflow of the population of working and reproductive age, negative tendencies in nuptiality (reduction in the number of marriages, postponement of marriages to a later date, a sharp increase in the number of divorces), deterioration in the health of the population, reduction in life expectancy. In general, the deterioration of demographic indicators is a consequence of political instability, a high level of corruption, a severe economic crisis, resulting in the decline of living standards, increase of unemployment, degradation of social security systems, education, culture, science, etc. All these negative processes were reflected in the Ukrainians of Moldova. The most compact Ukrainians live in the northern regions and on the left bank of the Dniester, which is due to historical factors.

Abstract:
The article considers marriage indicators in cities of the Perm governorate. The indicators of absolute marriage rates, average age of marriage, proportion of early marriages and other parameters of this demographic process were determined based on statistics of the Central Statistical Committee and city parish registers. A certain tendency towards a decrease in marriages at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as a slight increase in the age of marriage among women were observed. Marriage rates were influenced by social and economic indicators of urban development, leading to the democratisation of the marriage process. For women, later marriage resulted in an increased choice of life strategy. A significant number of unmarried and single lived in Perm and Ekaterinburg, where many migrants came.

Abstract:
As noted in this monograph, marriage forms a central element of social life for Egyptians. Marriage in Egypt is nearly universal, and parents invest heavily to establish their children in married life. Once married, couples are faced with social pressures to begin childbearing immediately, a reflection of the high value placed on parenthood and children. But not all marriages begin with the same prospects for stability and satisfaction. This study draws attention to the problems faced by women who marry at very early ages in parts of rural Egypt. Despite a legal minimum age of 16, significant numbers of young girls marry below that age, and many experience social, emotional, and health-related difficulties. This study tells why these young women married early and how that decision affected their later life. The study points to areas where the aspirations of these girls have been clearly thwarted—to go to school, delay marriage, and postpone childbearing until they feel physically and psychologically ready. A related picture emerges of the social and economic forces that propel rural girls into marriage at very young ages. Each of these problems suggest areas for policy attention.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Terai region of South-Eastern Nepal, there persists a form of agricultural bonded labour called Harwa-Charwa, rooted in agricultural feudal social relations. The Terai has a long and dynamic political history with limited employment opportunities and high levels of migration. This paper is an external qualitative analysis of over 150 life stories from individuals living in an area with high levels of bonded labour. These stories were previously analysed during a workshop through a collective participatory analysis. Both the participatory analysis and external analysis found similar mechanisms that trap people in poverty and bonded labour. The disaggregation by age in the external analysis could explain why child marriage and child labour were very important in the collective analysis but did not match the results of a baseline survey in the same geographical area that found only a few cases. The respondents were aged between 15 and 65. Child marriage and child labour had shaped the lives of the adults but have since decreased. Methodologically, the different ways of analysis diverge in their ability to differentiate timelines. The participatory analysis gives historical insights on pathways into child labour, but although some of the social norms persist this situation has changed.

Abstract:
The share of couples who cohabit prior to marriage has increased over time. Among marriages that took place between 2015 and 2019, three quarters were preceded by cohabitation, up from only one-third in the mid-to-late 70s (FP-21-04). This shift in behavior has been accompanied by a shift in attitudes toward cohabitation. Using Monitoring the Future data, this profile examines change in high school seniors’ attitudes toward cohabitation as a testing ground for marriage from 1976 to 2020. This measure is based on agreement or disagreement (neutral responses are not shown) with the statement “It is usually a good idea for a couple to live together before getting married in order to find out whether they really get along.” This profile updates previous profiles on high school seniors’ attitudes toward cohabitation using the most recent available data (FP-19-10; FP-16-13), and is a companion profile to High School Seniors’ Expectations to Marry, 2020 (FP-22-04).
