Abstract:
Ruby in diverse geological settings leaves petrogenetic clues, in its zoning, inclusions, trace elements and oxygen isotope values. Rock-hosted and isolated crystals are compared from Myanmar, SE Asia, and New South Wales, East Australia. Myanmar ruby typifies metasomatized and metamorphic settings, while East Australian ruby xenocrysts are derived from basalts that tapped underlying fold belts. The respective suites include homogeneous ruby; bi-colored inner (violet blue) and outer (red) zoned ruby; ruby-sapphirine-spinel composites; pink to red grains and multi-zoned crystals of red-pink-white-violet (core to rim). Ruby ages were determined by using U-Pb isotopes in titanite inclusions (Thurein Taung; 32.4 Ma) and zircon inclusions (Mong Hsu; 23.9 Ma) and basalt dating in NSW, >60–40 Ma. Trace element oxide plots suggest marble sources for Thurein Taung and Mong Hsu ruby and ultramafic-mafic sources for Mong Hsu (dark cores). NSW rubies suggest metasomatic (Barrington Tops), ultramafic to mafic (Macquarie River) and metasomatic-magmatic (New England) sources. A previous study showed that Cr/Ga vs. Fe/(V + Ti) plots separate Mong Hsu ruby from other ruby fields, but did not test Mogok ruby. Thurein Taung ruby, tested here, plotted separately to Mong Hsu ruby. A Fe-Ga/Mg diagram splits ruby suites into various fields (Ga/Mg < 3), except for magmatic input into rare Mogok and Australian ruby (Ga/Mg > 6). The diverse results emphasize ruby’s potential for geographic typing.

Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the growth and meat productivity of F1 crossbreds between Central Highland wild boards with Mong Cai and Soc pigs. The experiment was conducted on 2 groups of F1 pigs including F1 crossbred between native wild boars and Mong Cai pigs (RxM), F1 crossbred between of native wild boars and Soc (RxS) pigs, and 2 groups of Mong Cai pigs (M) and Soc pigs (S). The results demonstrated that the growth of F1 pig of RxM group was higher than RxS group after 3 months and 8 months of breeding. The carcass analysis showed that there was no difference in the slaughter weight of pigs between the RxM and M groups, as well as between the RxS and S groups. Pigs from the S group showed the lowest hanging weight (17.60 ± 0.52 kg) and lowest dressed weight (14.92 ± 0.49 kg) among the groups. There was no difference in the hanging weight and dressed weight among the RxM and M groups. However, the ratio of hanging weight (75.95 ± 0.23%) and dressed weight ratio (65.00 ± 0.18%) of RxM group is higher than M group (72.53 ± 0.44% and 62.24 ± 0.51%, respectively). The RxS group also had a higher percentage of hanging weight (74.28 ± 0.57%) and dressed weight (63.73 ± 0.48%) than the S group (71.10 ± 0.40% and 60.25 ± 0.50%, respectively). In this study, we also found that F1 hybrid pigs exhibited a lower backfat thickness than the M and S groups. In contrast, the backskin thickness increased in F1 hybrid groups. The above results showed that the hybridization of with Mong Cai and Soc pigs with Central Highland wild boars could improve the meat productivity of their F1 generation.

Abstract:
On 3 October 2014, peaceful pro-democracy protestors were attacked by thugs in Mong Kok, a working-class neighbourhood of Hong Kong. Using this event, we explore whether the attackers came from the same neighbourhood and mobilized to protect their illegal business activities, and whether the attackers were affiliated to the Triads. We conclude that the attackers were low-level Triads affiliates from outside Mong Kok and were paid to attack the protesters. While several scholars have suggested that Triads are in inexorable decline in post-1997 Hong Kong, we suggest that they might have found a new role as enforcer of unpopular policies and repression of democratic protests in the context of a drift towards authoritarianism in Hong Kong. The paper is based on field interviews with Triad members, businesspeople and activists, and on press reports and official documents.

Abstract:
SummaryThe role of individual monocyte subsets in inflammation and recovery post-myocardial infarction (MI) is insufficiently understood. It was the objective of this study to evaluate the dynamics of monocyte expression of receptors to vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM-1r), intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM-1r), and interleukin-6 (IL-6r) following MI and their relation to inflammatory cytokines, fibrinolytic factors and annexin V-binding microparticles. Expression of VCAM-1r, ICAM-1r, IL-6r on CD14++CD16–(Mon1), CD14++CD16+(Mon2), CD14+CD16++(Mon3) monocyte subsets were quantified by flow cytometry in patients with ST-elevation MI (STEMI, n=50), non-STEMI (n=48) and stable coronary artery disease (n=40). In STEMI, parameters were measured on days 1, 3, 7, 30. On admission with STEMI, VCAM-1r expression was reduced on Mon1 (p=0.007), Mon2 (p=0.036), Mon3 (p=0.005), whilst in NSTEMI there was significant up-regulation of expression by Mon2 (p=0.024) and Mon3 (p=0.049). VCAM-1r on Mon1 correlated positively with plasma IL-1β levels (p=0.001). IL-6r was reduced on Mon2 in acute STEMI, with upregulation of the receptor on Mon1 and Mon2 during follow-up. IL-6r density correlated negatively with plasma levels of tissue-type plasminogen activator (p=0.0005 for Mon1, p=0.001 for Mon2 and Mon3), and positively with annexin V-binding microparticles (p=0.03 for Mon1, p=0.005 for Mon2 and p=0.005 for Mon3). There was no change in monocyte ICAM-1r expression. In conclusion, expression of IL-6r and VCAM-1r is reduced on circulating monocyte subsets involved in inflammatory responses in STEMI. This may represent a regulatory feed-back mechanism aiming to re-balance the marked inflammation which is typically present following acute MI or selective homing of monocytes with high receptor expression to damaged myocardium.Note: The review process for this manuscript was fully handled by Christian Weber, Editor in Chief.

Abstract:
Introduction. Research on Buryat and Kalmyk pilgrimage to Buddhist worshiping sites in Tibet and wider in Inner Asia at the late imperial period mostly focuses on biographies and travel writings of Buddhist clergy, while experience of ordinary pilgrims ― especially of the lay people (Mong. khara khün) who were actors of this social phenomena ― received limited attention. However, some of the Buryat ‘oral histories’ about long distance travels to Tibet were recorded later by Buryat intellectuals (e. g., B. B. Baradiin) to name but a few. Goals. The article aims to introduce one such record made in 1968 by a rural community school teacher and amateur historian B. B. Namsaraev. Results. The latter wrote down a life story (Mong. namtar) of Bato Badmaev, an elder from the village of Suduntui, about his pilgrimage to Tibet between 1901 and 1904. This travelogue by a lay person presents unique first-hand observations about hardships of the long distance foot pilgrimage to worshiping places in Urga, Amdo and Tibet ― a wide social phenomenon among Buryats at the beginning of the 20th century. This ‘oral history’ together with extensive information about infrastructure along the pilgrim routes (Mongolian and Tibetan families hosting pilgrims and providing meals to them, travel tips they shared of how to pass the most dangerous hostile deserts and mountain passes, encountering a yeti snowman (Mong. almaz), etc.) contain emotional remarks about things experienced and bodily hardships pilgrims faced (thirst, physical exhaustion, extreme temperatures, and so on) ― aspects which are not covered in travelogues of Buddhist clergy and professional explorers (e. g., merchants, military specialists) who were in much more privileged travel conditions hiring horses and camels to carry their goods and belongings. Therefore, the recent publication (2012) of this unique travelogue made it more accessible and available to a wider audience.

Abstract:
Purpose. Monocytes (Mon1-2-3) play a substantial role in low-grade inflammation associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chronic heart failure (CHF). The effect of an acute exercise bout on monocyte subsets in the setting of systemic inflammation is currently unknown. This study aims (1) to evaluate baseline distribution of monocyte subsets in CHF and CKD versus healthy subjects (HS) and (2) to evaluate the effect of an acute exercise bout. Exercise-induced IL-6 and MCP-1 release are related to the Mon1-2-3 response.Methods. Twenty CHF patients, 20 CKD patients, and 15 HS were included. Before and after a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test, monocyte subsets were quantified by flow cytometry: CD14++CD16−CCR2+(Mon1), CD14++CD16+CCR2+(Mon2), and CD14+CD16++CCR2−(Mon3). Serum levels of IL-6 and MCP-1 were determined by ELISA.Results. Baseline distribution of Mon1-2-3 was comparable between the 3 groups. Following acute exercise, %Mon2 and %Mon3 increased significantly at the expense of a decrease in %Mon1 in HS and in CKD. This response was significantly attenuated in CHF (P<0.05). In HS only, MCP-1 levels increased following exercise; IL-6 levels were unchanged. Circulatory power was a strong and independent predictor of the changes in Mon1 (β=-0.461,P<0.001) and Mon3 (β=0.449,P<0.001); and baseline LVEF of the change in Mon2 (β=0.441,P<0.001).Conclusion. The response of monocytes to acute exercise is characterized by an increase in proangiogenic and proinflammatory Mon2 and Mon3 at the expense of phagocytic Mon1. This exercise-induced monocyte subset response is mainly driven by hemodynamic changes and not by preexistent low-grade inflammation.

Abstract:
This study looks at the relative importance of phonation type in identifying tones in languages with a ‘mixed’ pitch/phonation tone system. Green Mong is a tone language with an inventory of 7 contrastive tones and a tonal system that incorporates both fundamental frequency (FO) and phonation type distinctions. The study examines 3 Green Mong tones, which have similar FO contours and are characterized by the distinctive use of breathy, creaky and modal phonation. Acoustic analyses of 3 male and 3 female speakers' productions indicate that the tones are distinguished by their FO, relative amplitude of lower and higher harmonics (H1-H2), vowel duration, vowel quality and voice onset times. Discriminant analyses, used to estimate the relative value of these different cues, indicate that H1-H2 is the best predictor of tone category membership. This is the case for both high and low vowels, although the magnitude of the H1-H2 difference is substantially smaller for high vowels. The 2 predictor variables which are next most strongly correlated with the discriminant functions also relate to phonation type. However, FO does continue to play a role in classification of tokens into tone categories.

Abstract:
Glycerol as a byproduct of biodiesel production was approximately formed 10-20% of the biodiesel weight. Impurities which contained in the glycerol such as inorganic salts, catalysts, water and matter organic non glycerol (MONG) which contained free fatty acids, fatty acids as residual of methyl ester, glycerides, and alcohols (generally methanol or ethanol) had a significant effect on glycerol concentration. We needed some treatment, especially to eliminate the impuritis. This study aims to purify glycerol by acidfication using phosphate and adsorption with chicken egg shell waste. This research was begun with the pretreatment of glycerol using phosphoric acid with the variable of test weight ratio (w/w) acid added 1: 0.2; 1: 0.4; 1: 0.6; 1: 0.8 and 1: 1 , continued with adsorption using thermally activated chicken egg shell waste with the variable weight percent adsorbent (%w/w) 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% and 15% with reaction conditions, stirring speed 250 rpm and adsorption time 120 minutes. The purest result was obtained at weight ratio (w/w) acidification of 1: 0.6, weight percent adsorbent (% w/w) 15% with glycerol content of 67.22%, density 1.171 g / cm3, moisture content 2.796%, ash content 13.852% and MONG content 16.130%.

Abstract:
Affix verbs in the Saluan language can be added to basic word or basic form in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals. The affix has various forms and functions. This study examines the forms and function of verb affixes in the Saluan language. Related with that, this paper aims to describe the forms and function of verb affixes in the Saluan language. The data of this study were obtained using the litterary method. The data is processed using the intralingual equivalent method through a change technique. The results of this study indicate that there are five verb affixes in the Saluan language, namely prefix, suffix, confix, infix, and combinations of affixes. There are nine verb prefixes, namely moN-, pino-, i-, o-, ba-, po-, ko-, maha-, and mompo-. The moN prefix has four allomorphs, namely mom-, mong-, mo-, and mon-. There are two verb suffixes, namely -onon and-kon. There are four verb confixes, namely kino-an, kina-mo, kina-anmo, and maha-an. The verb infix is only one, namely -in-. Different case with a combination of affixes. The combination of verb affixes is nine, namely moN-akon, moN-kon, moN-i, i-akon, i-kon, pino-akon, pinokon, i-i, -in-an, -in-akon, and iin-kon. There are five functions of the affix form, namely changing the word category in its basic form, forming bitransitive verbs, forming transitive verbs, reciprocal verbs, and forming passive verbs.

Abstract:
AbstractThe illegal trade in rhinoceros horn, driven largely by the demand from East and South-east Asia, is a major impediment to the conservation of rhinoceroses globally. We surveyed the town of Mong La, in eastern Myanmar on the border with China, for the presence of rhinoceros horn. No rhinoceros horn was observed in 2006 or 2009, and other African wildlife was rare or absent. During visits in 2014 and 2015 we observed two horns, presumed to be of the white rhinoceros Ceratotherium simum, and one horn tip, small discs from the horn core, horn powder and horn bangles. Shops selling rhinoceros horn all specialized in high-end and high-value wildlife, mostly for decorative purposes, including whole elephant tusks, carved elephant ivory, carved hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius canines, and tiger Panthera tigris skins. Organized criminal syndicates are involved in the wildlife trade between Myanmar and Africa, possibly via China. Mong La's geographical position on the border with China, limited control by the central Myanmar Government, and the presence of the Chinese entertainment industry provide ideal conditions for a global wildlife trade hub catering for the Chinese market. Solutions require more intense collaboration between the Myanmar and Chinese authorities to curb the trade in African rhinoceros horn in this part of Asia.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is the chapter on Buddhist clergy from the ““Mongүol čaүajin-u bičig”, the Mongolian version of the “Code of the Chinese Chamber of External Relations”. The object of this research is the Manchurian policy with regards to Mongolian Buddhism. The article provides historiographical characteristics of the source in the old written Mongolian language, preserved in the Center of Oriental Manuscripts and Xylographs of the Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The author conducts a detailed overview of the five books of the compilation of laws; and based on the content of the articles, examines the position the Buddhist Church in accordance to the Qing legislation. It is underlined that the manuscript version of “Mongүol čaүajin-u bičig” reflects the traditional legal norms of the XIX century with regards to Buddhist religion. The author indicates the dynamic structure of the source and its evolution in terms of requirements of the time. Special attention is given to the restrictive policy of the Qing Empire in relation to Buddhist religion, as well as the interaction between religion and secular government, development of legal norms based on the “Truthful Record of the Mongols under the Qing Dynasty”. The main conclusion consists in the statement that the vertical of secular government subordinated the religious organization. The novelty is defined by involvement of the new source for analyzing the state of Mongolian Buddhism.

Abstract:
This article analyzes how political actors maneuvered and counter-maneuvered in South Korea in 2002, developing political strategy and exploiting national issues in order to position themselves for the presidential election of December 19, which dominated Korean politics throughout the year. Since public opinion polling conducted regularly by major news media had to a great extent shaped important decisions of all aspirants for daekwon (big power), the analysis focuses on explaining how the popularity of Lee Hoi-chang, Roh Moo-hyun, and Chung Mong-jun fluctuated, and how Roh finally won the presidential election.

Abstract:
SummaryLimited data are available on the role of monocytes in cardiac repair. In the present study, we evaluated the dynamic alterations of monocytes with reparative and angiogenic potential in patients with myocardial infarction(MI). Reparative CXCR4+ monocytes, and CD34+ and KDR+ monocytes with angiogenic potential derived from individual monocyte subsets were quantified by flow cytometry in patients with ST-elevation MI (n=50) and stable coronary artery disease (CAD, n=40). Parameters were measured on days 1, 3, 7 and 30 post MI. Monocyte subsets were defined as CD14++CD16–CCR2+ (‘classical’, Mon1), CD14++CD16+CCR2+ (‘intermediate’, Mon2), CD14+CD16++CCR2– (‘non-classical’, Mon3). Plasma levels of inflammatory cytokines, fibrinolytic factors and microparticles (MPs) were assessed on day 1. CXCR4+ and KDR+ monocytes were increased following MI, being more prominently associated with Mon2 (median[IQR] of CXCR4+ Mon2 60[25–126] per μl in STEMI vs. 27[21–41] per μl in stable CAD). The counts of CXCR4+ Mon2 in STEMI significantly reduced by day 30 of follow-up (27[18–47], p<0.001). Expression of the pro-reparative scavenger receptor CD163 on Mon3 was reduced in acute MI (p=0.008), and on other subsets later during the follow-up with lowest levels at day 3 post-MI (p<0.001 for Mon1, p=0.02 for Mon2). CD204 expression on Mon1 correlated with tissue type plasminogen activator levels (r=0.46, p=0.001). Interleukin(IL)6 levels correlated with counts of Mon2-derived CXCR4+ and KDR+ cells. Interleukin-1β correlated with KDR+ Mon2 counts. IL10 correlated with CXCR4+ Mon2 levels. Low count of CXCR4+ Mon2 and low CD163 expression by Mon2 were associated with higher ejection fraction six-weeks after MI. In conclusion, the Mon2 subset has the most prominent role in the observed changes in reparative monocytes in MI. The association of reparative monocytes with inflammatory/fibrinolytic markers indicates a complex interplay of these cells in the post-MI state.Note: The review process for this paper was fully handled by Prof. Christian Weber, Editor in Chief.

Abstract:
SummaryThe objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of cell adhesion molecule (CAM) receptors (integrins) on monocyte subsets in heart failure (HF) and examine their prognostic implication. Increased levels of soluble CAMs have been observed in patients with HF, but the precise mechanism of monocyte adhesion to the vascular endothelium remains unknown. Patients with acute HF (AHF, n=51) were compared to those with stable HF (SHF, n=42) and stable coronary artery disease (CAD, n=44) without HF. Expression of integrins-receptors to intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1R) and vascular CAM-1 (VCAM-1R) on monocyte subsets was assessed by flow cytometry. Monocyte subsets were defined as CD14++CD16–CCR2+ (‘classical’, Mon1), CD14++CD16+CCR2+ (‘intermediate’, Mon2), and CD14+CD16++CCR2– (‘non-classical’, Mon3). Compared to patients with SHF, those with AHF had significantly higher expression of ICAM-1R on Mon2 (p=0.01). Compared to those with stable CAD, patients with SHF had a significantly higher expression of ICAM-1R on Mon2 (p=0.025). Compared to SHF, patients with AHF had a similar expression of VCAM-1R on both Mon1 and Mon3 but significantly higher expression on Mon2 (p=0.019). There were no significant differences between SHF and CAD in monocyte expression of VCAM-1R. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, VCAM-1R expression on Mon2 was associated with adverse clinical outcome (death or rehospitalisation) in AHF [HR 1.07 (1.01–1.14), p=0.029]. In conclusion, HF is associated with increased monocyte expression of integrins-receptors to both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, being particularly linked to Mon2 subset. Expression of VCAM-1R on Mon2 may have prognostic value in patients with AHF.

Abstract:
Although fly ash is a solid waste of coal-fired power plants, it is also a potential raw material for the building materials industry. In the present work, the fly ash collected from Mong Duong I power plant was characterized and used as a substitute for kaolin and feldspar at sixteen percent of a ceramic tile raw mix. The results show that fly ash promotes sintering and helps upgrade wall tiles from unsatisfactory to grade BIIa and floor tiles from grade BIII to grade BIb. These changes have significant economic and environmental implications. However, due to a relatively high firing shrinkage, it is necessary to have appropriate adjustments if applied in industrial production.
