Full textThis Masters thesis aims to trace a history of the idea of a bi-national state for Arabs and Jews in historical Palestine. After laying out the specificities of a binational state, it reconstructs the circulation of the binational idea in the period before the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, among progressive Jews and Palestinian Arabs, in the Zionist movement, and among left-wing organizations in Palestine. In a second step, we we analize how the period between the establishment of the State of Israel and the peace process that led to the Oslo Accords, in the 90s, was marked by silence around the binational ideal while all the same laying the foundations for its revival at the turn of the 21st century. Finally, regarding todays Israeli-Palestinian context, we analyze the prospects of revival of binational proposals, focusing on left-wing journalists, a number of more or less marginal participants in institutional politics, some critical intellectuals and academic supporters, and among activists and social movements for human rights.

Full textFrom the reading of the novel Men in the Sun (1963), written by Ghassan Kanafani (1936-1972), this dissertation aims to expand the historical understanding of the Palestinian exile. The research has demanded a dialogue between this literary text and the historiographical production on its context to investigate a condition that is present in the lives of the Palestinian Arab population since 1948. Therefore, this work was structured from issues raised throughout the novel\'s plot and thereby it has provided reflection about the construction of a History of Palestine. The fictional text reveals itself as a critical analysis of history and at the same time, as a transformer project of reality from the memories of the exiled protagonists and the imposed need to have an identity, thus it provokes ideas for a national resistance in Palestine.

Full textThis work intends to investigate the Palestinian diaspora in Brazil, through the eyes of the members\\ sympathizers of the Palestinian Arab Federation of Brazil (FEPAL). The entity, founded in November 1980, united and politicized the Palestinian community of Brazil, at the same time that Brazil was following the exhaustion of the military regime. The presence of political demonstrations for the Diretas Já! was the opportunity found by Palestinian immigrants and descendants to spread the Palestinian cause to the Brazilian public. Further, the increase of the violence against Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in the 1980s was the key to the formation of a second entity, the Sanaúd Cultural Association, in 1982, created by the youngers from the Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian communities to demonstrate the Palestinian cause in many events promoted in São Paulo. The political effervescence in support of the Palestine question lasted until the mid-1990s, the dismay generated by the Oslo Peace Accords interrupted the Palestinian political militancy until its resumption in 2000, when the second Intifada broke out. It was at this time that new nationalist organizations were formed: Shalom, Salam, Paz (2000), an association between the Jewish and Palestinian community; the GT Árabe (2010) and the committee \"Estado da Palestina Já! (2011). It was through participant observation at the meetings of the GT Árabe and at the committee Estado da Palestina Já! and through the interviews with 13 collaborators that it was possible to understand the relations between FEPAL and Hamas; the increasing opposition to the directives of FEPAL in São Paulo and on the impressions of the foreign policy between Brazil and Palestine during the Lula government (2003-2010) and at the beginning of the Dilma Rousseff government (2011-2012). The clipping for this research starts from the year 2000, at the beginning of the second Intifada and goes until the vote for the recognition of the State of Palestine in the Assembly of the UN, in 2012. In the same year that the Free Palestine World Social Forum took place, in the city of Porto Alegre-RS.

Full textThis work is aimed at indications of the tactics and representations of American journalist Joe Sacco during his visit to the occupied territories of Círias and the Gaza Strip. As a research source, we adopted the comic book "Palestine," produced by Joe Sacco, a US journalist, for his trip to the occupied territories between 1991 and 1992. The object of study is written in the representations of the American journalist on the conflict between the Popular Palestinians and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at the beginning of the Intifada. For that, as notions of tactics and strategies are appropriate in our research through the work of the French historian Michel de Certeau, and concept of representation of the same French historian Roger Chartier as a theoretical element. To do this, what must be done before arriving in Palestine at the end of 1991. The appropriation These works laid the foundation for their criticism of US journalism and the partial direction of the Israeli cause. In addition, Sacco's other indictment is the imperialist and colonizing model that Israel executes in the occupied territories after 1967. From this perspective, Sacco emphasizes a need to produce his work through the Palestinian viewpoint of the conflict begun in 1987, called Of First Palestine Intifada. As observed by the journalist are observed no process of production of their work. Being "Palestine" a comic book, we used as methods for the work of the comic American Will Eisner to improve a language of the comics.

Palavras-chave: Palestinos no Chile. Imigração. Pertencimentos identitários.
Abstract: The analysis proposed in this work refers to the process of identity recognition of the chilean palestinians, considering their tensions and contrasts, based on the local native categories: "Palestinian-Palestinian", "Chilean-Palestinian", "Iraqi-Palestinian", "half-Palestinian" and "straight-Palestinian". This is an ethnography developed from participant observation of the Palestinian community of Santiago, Chile, during the years 2015 and 2016, which is considered the largest palestinian community outside the arabic world (OLGUÍN; PENÃ, 1990, p. 63). Integrated in the Chilean society, both politically and economically, the Palestinians in Chile are predominantly Christian, and the number of Muslims is less expressive. From the local social dynamics, I have witnessed a process of "competition of narrative identities" (BAESA, 2015), which contrasts the referred categories of Palestinians. Focusing on the construction of identity by the otherness, I propose an analysis of the tension and conflict in the processes of identity recognition that orbit around local categories of palestinity. The purpose of this analysis is the relations between the different groups that integrate the Chilean Palestinian community, organized from the native categories used by the interlocutors themselves. In this work, I sought to understand the multiple ways of defining Palestine and palestinity, focusing on the Chilean-Palestinian recognition through the dynamics of convergence, which seeks Palestinian self-affirmation as a unity, and of divergence, internal dispute within the community itself. Thinking about these relations allows us to problematize how this identity belonging is constructed by drawing a broad arena of negotiation, contesting orthodoxies (SCHIOCCHET, 2015). The experience is different, however it brings them together. Keywords: Palestinians in Chile. Immigration. Identity.

This work investigates the inclusion of a group of Palestinian immigrants who have arrived in Recife since the late nineteenth century. The initial proposal was to reflect about the social processes of construction of an ethnic identity of these immigrants and the establishment of a Palestinian ethnic group starting from the interethnic relations with the society that welcomed them. But something else seems to have happened to this group of Palestinians. First, there are no more the cultural differences that distinguished in the past this group from the Brazilian society, neither exists contrasting signals in relation to the welcoming society. Also, no longer exist the common interests or the ethnic solidarity that have characterized the early years of immigration and it is not possible to perceive among the group, an ethnicity capable to demarcate borders and to mobilize the collectivity to form an ethnic community characterized by social action. It was then sought to understand what had happened to the ethnicity of the immigrants since the exit from Palestine. The reports of the ethnography indicate that the children of the first immigrants may have been assimilated. "Everyone already considered themselves as Brazilians and behaved as Brazilians and nothing more bonded them to Palestine." In this case, this work questions how to apply the concepts of ethnicity or of ethnic group in a 'community' where it is not possible to observe residues of an ethnic identity among the immigrants. Therefore, in the impossibility to investigate this immigration under the theoretical perspective of ethnicity, it was necessary to resort to the old discussions on the concepts of assimilation and acculturation, despite the negative connotations that these concepts can represent. However, the reports also point out to a resurgence of ethnicity among the grandchildren and the great grandchildren of those whose parents or grandparents had been assimilated and for that matter the concept of category assimilation has no explanation. For this reason, this work needed at different times, to rely on these two theoretical perspectives for a better understanding of the integration process.

Full textThe present dissertation intended to investigate the phenomenon here identified as the digitalization of the occupation of contemporary Palestine, by means of analytical and historical reflexions regarding the techniques and technologies of control and surveillance implanted by what is hereby understood as a colonial effort in Palestinian territory, as well as the intersections of these techniques and technologies with the emergence of the State of Israel as a global high tech niche. It is understood that the referred process takes place, at first, in coherence with a privatization trend in the security sector - as well as its correspondence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) - and, secondly, as a narrative of efficiency, precision and sanitation of war, corresponding with the outsourcing of responsibility over violations and abuses perpetrated against the Palestinian population. Finally, in the seemingly contradictory context between the multiplication of information technologies and its promise regarding borders overruns, and the hardening of the Occupations control mechanisms, we shall discuss the possibility of resistance manifestations, from the Palestinian people in face of the cybernetic dimensions of the colonization of Palestine.
