Abstract:
The child of the law, like the man of the law, is a particular kind of legal young person who bears no necessary relationship to a “real” young person. Children are, nevertheless, very much present in the law. This chapter examines the ways in which the language of the law, expressed in statutes relating to child welfare and juvenile justice, has articulated particular notions of the criminal child and deviant childhood. The object, using the words of King and Piper, is to find out how the law has “thought about” children.

Abstract:
Objective: The efficacy of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunization in children against subsequent measles diagnoses was the focus of this research. Method: After the ethical approval from institution review board, this crossectional study was conducted at Indus hospital lahore. In this study, MMR vaccination data was collected from all the government vaccination centers from 1st January 2019 till 1st January 2023. Individuals' month and year of enrollment, gender, date of birth, and county level domicile were all included in the comprehensive eligibility data. Each person's diagnostic status was recorded in great detail in their claims file. Those who received just one dose of the MMR vaccination were included as part of the vaccinated group, whereas those who did not get any kind of vaccine containing measles were excluded from the research. Participants who had previously received more than one dose of MMR or any other measles-containing vaccine were not included in this analysis. Results: There were a total of 2000 people in the MMR-vaccinated cohort, accounting for 1543 person-years of data, and a total of 5000 people in the unvaccinated cohort, accounting for 3423 person-years of data. The male-to-female ratio in the MMR-vaccinated group was 0.97, while it was 1.13 in the unvaccinated group. 7% children in the MMR vaccinated group were diagnosed with measles, while 25% children in the unvaccinated group was diagnosed with measles. Conclusion: The prevalence of measles infections in children has been drastically decreased due to widespread MMR immunization. Keywords: MMR, measles, childhood, immunization

Abstract:
This research aims to explain and understand or understand what same sex marriage is, which is against the Bible's principles, and what factors cause such marriage, and what impact it has on society and the church. So this Biblical study discusses Christian marriage and its implications for God's children in order to understand true Christian marriage. For this reason, the research method used is a qualitative method, namely through documentation and literature research. So this research is to contain the Biblical understanding of Christian marriage, as a basis for providing answers to the rise of same-sex marriage in this era of globalization, and to have a better understanding of Christian marriage based on the Bible for Christians, so that Christians will be able and courageous. bringing in the LGBT community, who in fact are the vast majority of perpetrators of same-sex marriage. Often referred to as gender identity disorder, also known as transsexualism is the mental awareness a person has about their gender, about whether they are male or female in which the gender identity of a transsexual is opposite to the gender that is "imposed" on them based on his physical genitals. Male to female transsexual or what is known as homo and lesbi, namely transsexual male to female, has a male body and a female soul. Until now, the presence of LGBT people around us is still not fully accepted. Not infrequently they are treated like miracles who deserve ridicule, ridicule, or other forms of rejection. In fact, it is the resistance and anti-patience of the community that has been able to trigger the aggressive behavior of LGBT people.

Abstract:
The focus of this paper is to examine the deepest motives for acts of sexual violence against children, which have become a new kind of culture in Indonesia. Facts show that solving the problem of sexual violence against children is never finished. The chain of crimes continues and takes many victims, even though various methods have been used. This phenomenon finally motivated the writer to seek and find internal motives beyond the external explanations of existing acts of violence. The methodology used in this paper is a literature review by reading various books, journals, news items, and various information related to the theme being worked on. This study found that besides external motives causing sexual violence against children, there are also internal motives, namely the existence of a deviation of conscience of the perpetrator. Perpetrators of sexual violence against children do not want to listen. Their conscience supports them as a 'witness' and, simultaneously, a 'judge' who makes judgments of good-bad and right-wrong in their decisions or actions. Conscience, as the voice of God, is ignored and not obeyed by the person concerned. On that basis, the author offers an effort that is quite effective in finding a solution for the culture of sexual violence against children, namely the importance of conscience education, which includes cognitive, affective, and cognitive dimensions as well as the customary good. Conscience education is essential so that a person can harmonize his decisions and actions according to God's will as He has implanted it in the inner depths of each person.

Abstract:
The present paper is a reflection about the sexual violence phenomenon, especially sexual abuse practiced against children and its implications on the consolidation of the self of these subjects. This paper also debates that question based on the person centered approach. It has a bibliographic sort. At the first moment it is established a discussion about the sexual violence, its types and ways of action. It focalizes the term “sexual abuse” of children besides the today`s childhood’s historical debate of sense. The second moment brings the significance of self or “self concept” on psychological terms and defines it on the center of the psychology of development and the Person Centered Approach. At the third part, the paper defines a relation between the concept of self and the sexual violence phenomenon. One of the more important considerations it is that this phenomenon has a very hard identification, and the study, inside Psychology field it’s found dispersed, which the own Psychology Science is dispersed itself. It can be seen with this study that there is rare knowledge about the consolidation of self on children, those who are victims of this kind of violence. An important verification it is that the person centered approach position can define an efficient instrument at the attending of this demand, purposing positions and different ways of view. Finally, this paper is suggesting that more papers and studies at university should be developed, multiplying the knowledge on this area which is necessary.

Today's education can be said to be alarming, as a person who is concerned in education we must not be trapped in material things, for example we judge the level of education of a person from the degree he has, how many degrees he has and where he got it, but today we do not see a more substantial state of "They". Let's look at school children at this time have reduced respect for older people and think more biased and smarter than others. In the context of learning, doctrination still occurs in each subject matter. Learning activities are more focused on the minimum level of thinking (low order thinking), the teacher's job is simply to at the same time prohibit students - without providing opportunities for independent learning. This kind of educational practice by Emha Ainun Nadjib is often criticized that schools are like factories that require product standardization.

Abstract:
In the world where a broken family can breaks someone’s life, can self-actualization bring a better life to broken home children? Claire Legrand’s Some Kind of Happiness tells us about Finley Hart, an eleven years old child, who visits her estranged grandparents because her parents have problems leading to divorce. With a lot of mental problems faced by the character, this study wants to analyze how four basic needs build self-actualization. researcher collects the data from character Finley Hart in the novel Some Kind of Happiness with general inductive approach. This method enables researcher to dig significant data about Finley’s psychology over general condition in the story. Researcher also uses hierarchy of human needs theory by Abraham Maslow. This theory provides a structural explanation about basic human needs, self-actualization, and its benefit. From the study, researcher finds that every basic needs are important and supports each other in order to bring self-actualization. Self-actualization itself is crucial for it bring contentment to oneself. With the benefit of self-actualization, Finley has become a better and happier person. It proves that basic needs and self-actualization are essential for broken-home children.

Abstract:
Self-concept is an individual's views and feelings about himself that determine the determinants in communicatingwith others. Children who have a negative self-concept will view themselves and their environment in a low lightand aggressiveness among students will have the most negative impact. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between bullying behavior and self- concept in children at SDIT Al-Uswah Tuban. The design of this study used analytic correlation with a cross-sectional approach which was analyzed using random sampling technique on 52 respondents. The data was taken using a questionnaire on bullying behavior and self-concept, thenanalyzed using the Spearman rank test. The results showed that 71.2% had a high self-concept, 69.2% had mild bullying behavior. Statistical test results obtained p = 0.001 (p <0.05) and r = 0,436, which means that there is a significant relationship between bullying behavior and self-concept in children with sufficient relationship strength.Students who have a high self- concept have low bullying behavior. Therefore, parents are expected to monitor andgive advice to their children to be kind to others. Therefore, the school teaches children many things so that this can become a child's weapon in the future through religious knowledge, because to become a better person.

Abstract:
This study was concerned with exploring the meaning birth relatives gave their experiences of counselling following the removal of their children from their care. An exploratory research question was formulated and addressed using a qualitative approach. The involvement of a service user as expert supervisor added an important element and certain validity to the design, analysis and findings. Interviews took place with five birth mothers who had received counselling from one birth relatives counselling service. Three master themes were constructed from the data: From feeling alone, judged and let down to feeling part of a special relationship; "The healing process"; and "My children are my world".

Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

McCarthy, Melissa. "Comparison of telepractice and in-person models of family-centred early intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1423045.

Full text
Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Young children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) require specialised early intervention support to achieve communication, language and developmental outcomes comparable to their same-age hearing peers. The use of family-centred early intervention (FCEI) is an internationally accepted standard for providing this support. FCEI involves families as equal partners in all aspects of early intervention including planning, implementation, and evaluation. Practitioners using FCEI aim to work collaboratively with families, build on family strengths, and expand existing family capacity. For many families with children who are DHH, access to timely and consistent FCEI is limited by a lack of appropriate services, geographical barriers, and workforce shortages. Practitioners have attempted to address these disparities by introducing a model of telepractice—the use of synchronous audio and video technology to connect practitioners and families in real-time, regardless of their individual locations. However, there is limited research examining the efficacy of telepractice in achieving the principles of FCEI. There are two aspects to this challenge. The first relates to practitioners’ ability to use family-centred practices in a telepractice setting, and the second relates to caregivers’ level of engagement and participation when FCEI is delivered through telepractice. The series of studies reported in this thesis compared the self-reported and observed behaviours of practitioners and caregivers who were engaged in FCEI in-person with those of similar practitioners and caregivers who were engaged in FCEI through telepractice. The participants were all involved in programs provided by one organisation that operated two separate FCEI programs for children who are DHH: one in-person and the other through telepractice. Participants included 141 caregivers (100 in-person and 41 telepractice) and 38 practitioners (23 in-person and 15 telepractice). In the first of two stages, practitioners completed a self-assessment of their use of family-centred practices (the Measures of Processes of Care for Service Providers), and caregivers completed a self-assessment of their own self-efficacy and involvement in their child’s early intervention (the Scale of Parental Involvement and Self-Efficacy). A subset of this group participated in the second stage of the study, which used an observational instrument (the Triadic Intervention and Evaluation Scale) to evaluate practitioners’ use of family-centred behaviours and caregivers’ level of participation and also to categorise the roles enacted by practitioners and caregivers and the relationships formed during the intervention session. Results of the self-assessments showed that there were no differences between the in-person and telepractice groups for both practitioners’ use of family-centred practices and caregivers’ levels of self-efficacy and involvement. Results from the observational analysis showed significant differences between in-person and telepractice groups for both practitioners’ use of specific FCEI behaviours and caregivers’ level of participation. In addition, there were significant differences between the two groups regarding practitioner and caregiver roles and the relationships formed between practitioners, caregivers, and children. These findings support the conclusions that (a) FCEI can be delivered through telepractice in a manner that is comparable to in-person delivery; and (b) in some circumstances, telepractice may enable practitioners to adhere more consistently to the principles of FCEI than practitioners in-person, which, in turn, provides children and families the opportunity to more fully realise the intended outcomes of FCEI. Overall, the evidence presented supports the viability of telepractice for delivering FCEI, and suggests that telepractice can provide an acceptable alternative to in-person delivery of FCEI.

Abstract:
AbstractAs we have seen in the introduction, when we talk about discrimination, we normally talk about a certain kind of behaviour. If we treat a person or group differently compared to another person or group, this means that we behave differently depending on who our counterpart is. Therefore, dissecting discrimination implies dissecting the ways we behave in. The tool of analysis used in this dissertation in order to investigate and explain behaviour is decision theory.

While there are benefits to learning online, they come at a cost, and students are less likely to pass their online courses compared to their in-person courses. In this chapter, we share two frameworks. We share the 4Es framework that highlights how online courses should be designed to enable, extend, engage, and elevate student learning. However, a well-designed course is not enough, and most students will require support from others to be successful. For this reason, we also share the Academic Communities of Engagement (ACE) framework that highlights the supports that can increase a student’s affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. The ACE framework identifies actors within the student’s personal community and course community who can provide students with the support that they require.

Abstract:
The marital ideal that made it difficult for Grace Chisholm Young (1868-1944) to maintain an independent professional life was that of the "helpmate wife” who advanced her husband’s career. A graduate of Girton College and the first woman to defend a thesis and earn a doctorate in mathematics in Germany, Grace Chisholm was a mathematician in her own right when she married her former college tutor, William Henry Young (1863-1942), in 1896. After they moved to Europe with their infant son, Will encouraged Grace to fulfill her longstanding desire to study medicine, instead of continuing to work with him on pure mathematics. She remained in Germany with their two children while he divided his time between Germany and teaching jobs in Britain. Soon Grace was doing mathematics with Will as well as medicine, and also caring for their growing family (four more children were born between 1901 and 1908). Their partnership, which never fully acknowledged her contribution, established Will as a highly creative mathematician in the early 1900s. Over the next two decades, the Youngs produced several books and over two hundred articles, but Will took public credit for their joint work. Grace willingly assumed the role of junior, mostly anonymous, and distinctly subordinate partner in the Youngs’ collaboration. Her role in their professional partnership mirrored her role in their domestic partnership, and reflected their assessment of their respective talents: he was a late-blooming genius while she was merely talented. They agreed that helping him was more important than anything she could do on her own. Nevertheless, Grace refused to give up her medical training -- an aspect of her life that has not been adequately explored until now. Will encouraged her interest in medicine, but simultaneously pressured her to devote more time to helping him with mathematics. Grace never became a licensed doctor, but she eventually completed all the required coursework, despite the seemingly impossible demands on her time. She also published two children’s books about science, penned stories for her own children, wrote poetry, and authored an historical novel about Elizabethan England that was never published. When Will was teaching in India from 1914 to 1916, Grace wrote a series of papers under her own name that established her independent reputation in pure mathematics. Although she found it increasingly difficult to be Will’s self-sacrificing helpmate, especially after he retired, she continued to cultivate her image as a devoted, helpmate wife who advanced her husband’s career. But she silently rebelled, and her notebooks, pocket diaries, and the poetry she wrote in the 1930s record her disillusionment and suppressed anger.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how children’s wartime suffering was culturally constructed in postwar Hungary. Laine-Frigren uses a wide variety of source materials, such as published expert discourse, journalism and ego documents to explore how children’s suffering was interpreted and worked upon in different contexts, how the processes of healing were understood, and what kind of political meanings were attributed to children’s traumas. The particular focus is on the agency of people who did actual practical work with children, such as psychologists, teachers and civil society activists. The chapter suggests a multiplicity of responses to childhood trauma, from abstract and future-oriented policy-talk to teachers and psychologists promoting specific ways of healing such as offering children moments of joy, taking them on nature trips and exploring poetry.

Abstract Demographic and social changes mean that for many, having a first child and raising young children now occurs in the period of established adulthood, that is, if people choose to have children at all. This chapter explores established adults’ experiences of deciding, or in some cases not deciding, whether to have children and what established adults’ experiences of life with or without children is like. First, the chapter explains how people make or don’t make decisions about having children, and describes the experience of having children who were unplanned. In the next section, established adults share what life is like with children, including the rewards and challenges of parenting. The chapter then explores the experience of being both voluntarily and involuntarily childfree in established adulthood. The chapter concludes by describing the contribution of children to the career and care crunch.

The word „praise” is usually associated with something pleasant and positive. There is nothing strange about it, because praise can motivate to act and be nice to the person who receives it. It seems, therefore, that praising children by parents does not involve any kind of threat. But is it really so? The article deals with the issues related to upbringing, and more specifically the impact of praise from parents on relationships between children. Among other things, the issue of what praise is and what consequences it can have for the relationship between brothers and sisters was raised here. The way parents relate to their children, what messages they use, among others, when praising, seems to be important in the formation of the parent-child relationship, but also the relationship between siblings.

This chapter recounts how Josephine McCarty shot Milton Thomson after he refused to support their children. However, the bullet failed to kill Milton Thomson and instead killed his nephew, Henry Hall. Josephine's crime was big news—and so was she. In the days following the shooting, as news of the crime spread from Utica to the rest of the nation, the woman who killed the wrong man became a source of rampant curiosity. By the weekend, all the major papers were trading various versions of Josephine's biography, with an emphasis on her career as an abortionist, her stint as a Confederate spy, and her repeated intrigues with powerful men from Albany to Washington to Philadelphia. In addition to the prisoner's biography and updates on her children, the Utica Daily Observer offered its readers a little primer on the law: the law had no specific rule defining the appropriate punishment for a person who, in the process of trying to murder one person, accidentally killed another. As a white woman on trial for murder in the United States in the nineteenth century, Josephine was simultaneously privileged and disadvantaged by her own gender. It all came down to what kind of woman Josephine McCarty was.

Abstract:
"This research addressed the issue of domestic violence investigating whether and how it affects the school performance of the child who witnesses episodes of violence against the mother in the home. Personal characteristics and other environments in which these children and adolescents are inserted in, such as family, school and community interact with each other and can influence their school performance. Because the school is the second most common space for children, it is in it where family environment is expressed. The main objective of this study was to analyze whether and how domestic violence experienced by children affects their school performance. The data were collected throughout documentary research, one analyzing the information recorded in the files of the Reference and Service Center for Women (CRAM in Portuguese) and the Municipal Education Secretariat (SME). Records were selected from 20 children regularly enrolled in elementary public schools, whose mothers sought the services of CRAM. The dependent variable was school grades, which were analyzed according to a repeated measures design: during the occurrence of domestic violence episodes and after these episodes have ceased. Analyzes were also conducted with the aim of verifying possible effects of other variables, such as school attendance, family socioeconomic status and mothers education level. The results showed that the students had lower school performance after the end of the episodes of violence. No effects of other variables were observed. Factors related to the phenomenon are discussed as possible causes: separation from the father, change of address, custody’s change and others. Considering that the casuistry of this study was composed of students from low-income families, the results point to a kind of ""Matthew effect"", that is, a relationship between violence, poverty and ignorance in which everyone feeds each other forming a cycle quite hard to break. Therefore, it is necessary that public policies be formulated in the scope of education so that students who experience domestic violence receive specialized attention aiming at realizing their learning potential."

Abstract:
In the current context of the development of society, an important role is played by the formation of comfortable relationships of the person with the surrounding world. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have witnessed the fact that one of the main human needs - the need for security is violated, which leads to an increase in the number of children in need of psychological help. The educational environment must ensure the satisfaction of the needs of personal-confidential communication, to be an environment free of manifestations of psychological violence in interaction, so as to contribute to maintaining the mental health of educational actors. The school has significant resources to design programs to prevent aggressive behavior and to create a protective school environment that would ensure the psychological security of children by preventing and combating violence of any kind in the school environment.

Abstract:
Childhood is considered the future of communities, and the prosperity and development of nations is based on the values and skills that we inculcate in our childhood. Perhaps the most important period in childhood is the first years, as it is a critical period of great importance in forming the child’s skills and abilities, especially since research in modern cognitive neurosciences has made clear The nervous system is characterized by flexibility and speed in processing information in the first years of a child’s life. With the emergence of modern technology, all kinds of screens, and the development of applications for children, our desire and curiosity have grown to discover the impact of this early and excessive exposure on the psychological development in all its aspects: cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and social for children. . So we decided to study the extent of the impact of excessive and early exposure to screens on the psychological development of the child? To study this problem, we used the descriptive approach, which enabled us to collect study data, and we studied (10) cases who were exposed at an early age, i.e. less than five years, to exposure exceeding five hours a day in front of all types of screens. Our study was conducted at the level of a private psychological and speech therapist clinic in the state of Mostaganem - Algeria - and the most important results of the study resulted in a clear decline in the spontaneous communicative linguistic level of children. The study also showed the emergence of social isolation and difficulties in emotional expression and in managing emotions in children

Abstract:
Today, more than ever, the theme of wars and conflicts has become even more present in our lives. The war in Ukraine, geographically closer to us, has had and continues to have various consequences on our daily lives, but especially on the children who are refugees from the war. Moreover, that this war is not the only one that still injures, kills and takes away the future of thousands of people. And if the daily tragic bulletins have a strong impact on the emotional state, then the reality of the war seen through the eyes of children, without filters, generates devastating psychological consequences. In this context, drawing for war-affected children represents a kind of window on their inner world, which allows them to express what they cannot verbalize with words. It provides clinical direction on the intensity of the traumatic experience, traceable to the symbolic representation of the event, the reworking of the past, and the child's ability to imagine a future.

There is no profession more pressured by society than teachers who are highly expected to hone the total human person to fit the human resource needs of the future. This herculean task has taken its toll in the higher prevalence of health problems among teachers. This research looked into the profile of teachers, their self-care practices and the interaction between these two variables. Data were gathered using a researcher-designed questionnaire from faculty members of a selected higher education institution. Demographically, more than one-half of the faculty members are female, middle aged, with 13 to 22 units of academic load, only few have administrative designations, with P15,001 to P25,000 monthly income, married, with 1 to 2 children, with normal body mass index, with diagnosed chronic diseases, not taking maintenance medications at the moment, and with first degree relatives who also have diagnosed chronic diseases. Further, the faculty members usually practiced self-care measures on diet, physical activity, rest and recreation, and always practiced self-care measures on habits. Ordinal regression results showed that most of the demographic characteristics of the faculty members are predictors of their self-care practices.

Abstract:
In this article we experimentally evaluate Colombias Think Equal program, which teaches socioemotional skills to children ages 3 to 6. Given the context of COVID-19, the original design was adapted as a hybrid model, alternating in-person and remote instruction and engaging families in the implementation of the curriculum. We found that the program had positive effects on childrens prosocial behavior, self-awareness, and cognitive learning. The intervention also had an impact on education centers personnel (community mothers) and caregivers implementing the activities. Treated community mothers had higher levels of empathy, lower negative health symptoms, better pedagogical practices, and a closer relationship with the childrens caregivers compared with those in the control group. Treated caregivers had better stimulation practices and lower negative health symptoms compared with those in the control group. These findings suggest that a well-designed intervention has the potential to develop socioemotional skills in children at an early age and, at the same time, to develop capacities in those who implement the activities. Our results have important implications for the design, implementation, and evaluation of early childhood socioemotional learning programs and provide novel evidence about the challenges faced by interventions combining face-to-face and remote learning.

Darmody, Merike. Care to college: An exploratory study on care-experienced students’ educational journeys. ESRI, 2025. https://doi.org/10.26504/jr13.

Full text
Abstract:
New research by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Empowering People in Care (EPIC) highlights the importance of the combined effects of school experiences and care experiences on the post-school lives of young people leaving care. At the end of February 2025, there were 5,801 children (0–17 years) in care in Ireland. Although being in the care of the state is common among these children and young people, they are not a homogenous group, and their personal experiences and circumstances vary. This exploratory study draws on focus group interviews with a small group of care-experienced young people – those who had enrolled in third level education and those whose third level education was interrupted - as well as a consultation event with key stakeholders. Key Findings For young people in care, attitude to school is often influenced by changes in care placements and school changes, learning difficulties, insufficient support with schoolwork, not feeling as smart as other students, and mental health issues. Multiple care placements and school changes are likely to make their school engagement more challenging. Care placement changes may result in students missing school and finding it hard to catch up afterwards. Making friends was harder for young people who had experienced several school changes. Social workers were a source of consistent support for some care-experienced young people. However, in other cases, such support was found to be wanting, especially when there had been a change in a social worker or when the interaction between the young person and the social worker was limited. Although some of the young people appreciated the support from their aftercare workers (main support workers put in place to meet the needs of a young person who is leaving care services at age 18 years) as they prepared to leave care, several of them were critical of the level of support they received. Preparation for the ‘double transition’ of leaving care and leaving school was a challenging time for many of the care-experienced young people interviewed as they often lack the traditional supportive family structure. Several young people in this study had been undecided about what to do after finishing school. Despite having access to a guidance counsellor, for many, guidance about their post-school options was seen as insufficient or their chosen option was not supported by guidance counsellors and social workers. Young care-experienced people who had a more stable care placement, with fewer school changes and high expectations from their foster parents and social workers, perceived entry into third-level education after finishing school as something that ‘you do’. Eligibility for an aftercare allowance for young people leaving care at 18 years of age is dependent on being on an accredited education course, third level course or training programme. Some young care-experienced people who did not wish to pursue third-level education or did not want to do it straight after finishing school felt pressurised to do so to receive the allowance. Similar to other young people, care-leavers faced multiple challenges related to enrolling in third-level education, including getting used to the new educational setting, finding accommodation, and managing their finances. The situation is likely to be more acute for care-experienced young people who lack the support of their families.

Abstract:
Subject of the article’s study – ecumenism of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi and reflection of this phenomenon in the works of scientists and modern Ukrainian media. Main objective of the study: analyze what Ukrainian scientists, journalists and different media are writing about Sheptytkyi’s ecumenism. Methodology: We used a bibliographic method to accumulate factual material, a qualitative content analysis to isolate the ideas of ecumenism from the journalism of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, a cultural-historical method that made it possible to consider the ideas of ecumenism in the context of the era, the connection with the historical context, as well as methods of synthesis and generalization, induction and deduction. The study process description: In our scientific article, we analyzed the doctoral dissertation of His Beatitude Lubomyr Huzar entitled «Andrei Sheptytskyi, Metropolitan of Halytskyi (1901-1944). Herald of ecumenism». His Beatitude Lubomyr defended this fundamental work at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome back in 1972. Therefore, we observed how this work reflects the historical prerequisites, features and development of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism, who, according to His Beatitude Lubomir, was a kind of innovator in this field, a person who was ahead of his time. We also analyzed the reflections on the ecumenism of Sheptytskyi´s father, doctor Ivan Datsk, which are reflected in his book «In Search of Faithfulness and Truth». In addition, we turned to the scientific text «Ecumenism of Sheptytskyi» by professors Mykola Vegesh and Mykola Palinchak. Subsequently, it was analyzed how the scientific work became a useful basis for the coverage of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism in the press. In particular, in the columns of the cultural and social site «Zbruch» in Diana Motruk’s article «In Search of Church Unity». We also turned to the «Spiritual Greatness of Lviv» website, where in 2020 an interview with Mykhailo Perun, who shot the film «Sheptytskyi: Relevant information», was published, illustrating the ecumenical initiatives of this figure. In addition, we analyzed the publication on Radio Svoboda for 2022, dedicated to the anniversary of Sheptytsky’s stepping into eternity. It is also mentioned there about of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism as his landmark activity. Subsequently, we found an article on the website «Christian and the World», where in a conversation with the scientist Dr. Andrii Sorokovskyi entitled «Andrei Sheptytskyi believed that the union is a synthesis, communion and dialogue between the East and the West, – Andrii Sorokovskyi» also analyzed the phenomenon of Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism. Results: we discovered that Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism was studied not only by numerous scientists, but this meaningful legacy of his is a valuable phenomenon for media coverage. Therefore, Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism becomes the subject of interest of journalists not only of publications that write mainly on church topics, but also socio-political and artistic ones. We are sure that Sheptytskyi’s ecumenism will continue to be studied by professional scientists and representatives of the wider media community. Significance: journalism of a religious orientation, high-quality and substantiated coverage of religious processes and phenomena in the press is still something quite new for modern Ukraine. In Soviet times, journalists were afraid to write about religion in order not to incur the wrath of the authorities, so such materials could not be included in the press. That is why it is very important to study how today’s journalists cover important issues of religion, which, in addition, have a strong scientific basis. In addition, the development of ecumenism and religious unity are extremely important for building national unity, which is necessary for our state to effectively confront the enemy in full-scale war. Key words: ecumenism; Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi; media; interreleigion cooperation; dialogue.

Nolan, Brian, Brenda Gannon, Richard Layte, Dorothy Watson, Christopher T. Whelan, and James Williams. Monitoring Poverty Trends in Ireland: Results from the 2000 Living in Ireland survey. ESRI, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.26504/prs45.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is the latest in a series monitoring the evolution of poverty, based on data gathered by The ESRI in the Living in Ireland Surveys since 1994. These have allowed progress towards achieving the targets set out in the National Anti Poverty Strategy since 1997 to be assessed. The present study provides an updated picture using results from the 2000 round of the Living in Ireland survey. The numbers interviewed in the 2000 Living in Ireland survey were enhanced substantially, to compensate for attrition in the panel survey since it commenced in 1994. Individual interviews were conducted with 8,056 respondents. Relative income poverty lines do not on their own provide a satisfactory measure of exclusion due to lack of resources, but do nonetheless produce important key indicators of medium to long-term background trends. The numbers falling below relative income poverty lines were most often higher in 2000 than in 1997 or 1994. The income gap for those falling below these thresholds also increased. By contrast, the percentage of persons falling below income lines indexed only to prices (rather than average income) since 1994 or 1997 fell sharply, reflecting the pronounced real income growth throughout the distribution between then and 2000. This contrast points to the fundamental factors at work over this highly unusual period: unemployment fell very sharply and substantial real income growth was seen throughout the distribution, including social welfare payments, but these lagged behind income from work and property so social welfare recipients were more likely to fall below thresholds linked to average income. The study shows an increasing probability of falling below key relative income thresholds for single person households, those affected by illness or disability, and for those who are aged 65 or over - many of whom rely on social welfare support. Those in households where the reference person is unemployed still face a relatively high risk of falling below the income thresholds but continue to decline as a proportion of all those below the lines. Women face a higher risk of falling below those lines than men, but this gap was marked among the elderly. The study shows a marked decline in deprivation levels across different household types. As a result consistent poverty, that is the numbers both below relative income poverty lines and experiencing basic deprivation, also declined sharply. Those living in households comprising one adult with children continue to face a particularly high risk of consistent poverty, followed by those in families with two adults and four or more children. The percentage of adults in households below 70 per cent of median income and experiencing basic deprivation was seen to have fallen from 9 per cent in 1997 to about 4 per cent, while the percentage of children in such households fell from 15 per cent to 8 per cent. Women aged 65 or over faced a significantly higher risk of consistent poverty than men of that age. Up to 2000, the set of eight basic deprivation items included in the measure of consistent poverty were unchanged, so it was important to assess whether they were still capturing what would be widely seen as generalised deprivation. Factor analysis suggested that the structuring of deprivation items into the different dimensions has remained remarkably stable over time. Combining low income with the original set of basic deprivation indicators did still appear to identify a set of households experiencing generalised deprivation as a result of prolonged constraints in terms of command over resources, and distinguished from those experiencing other types of deprivation. However, on its own this does not tell the whole story - like purely relative income measures - nor does it necessarily remain the most appropriate set of indicators looking forward. Finally, it is argued that it would now be appropriate to expand the range of monitoring tools to include alternative poverty measures incorporating income and deprivation. Levels of deprivation for some of the items included in the original basic set were so low by 2000 that further progress will be difficult to capture empirically. This represents a remarkable achievement in a short space of time, but poverty is invariably reconstituted in terms of new and emerging social needs in a context of higher societal living standards and expectations. An alternative set of basic deprivation indicators and measure of consistent poverty is presented, which would be more likely to capture key trends over the next number of years. This has implications for the approach adopted in monitoring the National Anti-Poverty Strategy. Monitoring over the period to 2007 should take a broader focus than the consistent poverty measure as constructed to date, with attention also paid to both relative income and to consistent poverty with the amended set of indicators identified here.

Duclos, Diane, Bob Okello, Godefroid Muzalia, and Melissa Parker. Key considerations: Home-based care for mpox in Central and East Africa. Institute of Development Studies, 2025. https://doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2025.026.

Full text
Abstract:
In September 2023, an outbreak of mpox caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV) clade Ib was reported in Kamituga, a mining region in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). More cases of mpox started to be reported across the country and in neighbouring countries in the east, including Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi.1 In February 2025, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that the ongoing upsurge of mpox continues to be a public health emergency of international concern (as first declared in August 2024). Home-based care (HBC) – care provided in the private home of a person – often takes place informally for a wide range of reasons during epidemics. Home-based models of care are increasingly being explored by Ministries of Health as a strategy for managing outbreaks and providing treatment for mild forms of diseases, particularly in resource-limited settings. Reasons to implement HBC for mild forms of diseases include to provide care when there is a lack of access to or overburdened services, to prevent a risk of infection in health facilities, to accommodate people’s preferences and to empower the public when HBC is implemented in partnership with community members. Home-based models of c are for mpox should not supplant investments in the health system, but should be designed as a component of primary healthcare. Past experiences with HBC during outbreaks such as HIV and COVID-19 offer valuable lessons. However, the unique transmission dynamics of mpox – especially the risks it poses to children and those who are immunologically vulnerable in the home – require careful consideration. To date, attention has focused on infection, prevention and control (IPC) and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in the home. Other aspects of mpox management and care at home also need to be considered. It is particularly important to recognise that mpox is not only a biomedical event: it is also a social phenomenon, impacting livelihoods, relationships, well-being and access to care and protection. Also, a lack of income in the absence of financial support is likely to hinder peoples’ ability to follow isolation guidance. This brief outlines key considerations on health system requirements for safe and inclusive HBC. It also foregrounds structural constraints and socio-political dynamics shaping understandings and practices of HBC, taking into consideration local and gendered perspectives on home and caregiving. The brief also examines how ongoing funding cuts in global health, humanitarian aid and development assistance are straining the capacity of both community-based initiatives and healthcare systems, further complicating home and community-based response efforts. The focus is on Central and East Africa in particular. The brief draws on conversations with experts and health actors active or knowledgeable in the region and outbreak, or both; the authors’ own expertise; and academic and grey literature on HBC and histories of epidemics in Central and East Africa. The brief includes two cases studies based on recent research in Uganda and the DRC.

Abstract:
Humanitarian ration cuts have had a wide range of devastating impacts on individuals, households, groups, and communities, who rely on this aid for survival. Humanitarian rations can include in-kind transfers, food vouchers or cash transfers: the focus in this report is on in-kind food rations. This report discusses various impacts of humanitarian ration cuts on vulnerable groups, and on displaced persons as a whole—identified through a broad survey of academic, donor, and non-governmental organisation (NGO) literature and news reporting on different aspects of ration cuts. The focus is primarily on refugee populations and sub-groups of refugees, such as women and children. There was inadequate information on impacts on the elderly, persons with disabilities, LGBTQI+ communities, and ethnic or religious minorities. The elderly and persons with disabilities are often overlooked in the design and implementation of programming; and in data collection (Jote & Tekle, 2022; Nisbet et al., 2022). Much of the literature also centres on sub-Saharan Africa.
