Abstract:
Djuna Barnes's experimental text Nightwood offers a difficult narrative shaped around a sense of loss. Barnes outlines a loss of access to history, to language, and to representation in general for those consigned to the margins of culture. By using a torrential and Byzantine language—a language of indirection—Barnes creates a lexicon of loss that acts as a strategy for recuperating what has been unspeakable, particularly the culturally disempowered: in this text, Jews, women, and homosexuals. Her psychic and textual strategies work through analogy to recover unrecorded history and to show the unrepresented. Barnes reconfigures the culturally privileged discourse of melancholia and in doing so articulates a structure of loss for those whose histories have been effaced.

Abstract:
AbstractJohn Conway's analysis in 1968 of the automorphism group of the Leech lattice and his discovery of three sporadic simple groups led to the immediate speculation that other Z-lattices might have interesting automorphism groups which give rise to (possibly new) finite simple groups. (The classification theorem for the finite simple groups has since told us that no new finite simple groups can arise in this or any other way.) For example in 1973, M. Broué and M. Enguehard constructed, in every dimension 2n, an even lattice (unimodular if n is odd) whose automorphism group is related to the simple Chevalley group of type Dn. This family of integral lattices received attention and acclaim in the subsequent literature. What escaped the attention of this literature, however, was the fact that these lattices had been discovered years earlier. Indeed in 1959, E. S. Barnes and G. E. Wall gave a uniform construction for a large class of positive definite Z-lattices in dimensions 2n which include those of Broué and Enguehard as special cases. The present article introduces an abstracted and generalized version of the construction of Barnes and Wall. In addition, there are some new observations about Barnes-Wall lattices. In particular, it is shown how to associate to each such lattice a continuous, piecewise linear graph in the plane from which all the important properties of the lattice, for example, its minimum, whether it is integral, unimodular, even, or perfect can be read off directly.

Abstract:
The work describes the technology of a liquid crystal cell with a tapered optical fiber as an element providing light. The tapered optical fiber with the total optical loss of 0.22 ± 0.07 dB, the taper waist diameter of 15.5 ± 0.5 μm, and the elongation of 20.4 ± 0.3 mm has been used. The experimental results are presented for a liquid crystal cell filled with a mixture 1550* for parallel orientation of LC molecules to the cross section of the taper waist. Measurement results show the influence of the electrical field with voltage in the range of 0-200 V, without, as well as with different modulation for spectral characteristics. The sinusoidal and square signal shapes are used with a 1-10 Hz frequency range. Full Text: PDF ReferencesZ. Liu, H. Y. Tam, L. Htein, M. L.Vincent Tse, C. This dissertation considers the formal and thematic camaraderie between T. S. Eliot and Djuna Barnes. The Waste Land 's poet, whom critics often cite as exemplary of reactionary high modernism, appears an improbable companion to Nightwood 's novelist, who critics, such as Shari Benstock, characterize as epitomizing "Sapphic modernism." However, Eliot and Barnes prove complementary rather than antithetical figures in their approaches to the collapse of historical and religious authority. Through close readings, supplemented by historical and literary sources, I demonstrate how Eliot, in his criticism and poems such as "Gerontion," and Barnes, in her trans-generic novel Nightwood , recognize the instability of history as defined by man and suggest the necessity of mythmaking to establish, or confirm, personal identity. Such mythmaking incorporates, rather than rejects, traditional Christian signs. I examine how, in Eliot's poems of the 1920s and in Barnes's novel, these writers drew on Christian symbols to evoke a nurturing, intercessory female parallel to the Virgin Mary to investigate the hope for redemption in a secular world. Yet Eliot and Barnes arrive at contrary conclusions. Eliot's poems increasingly relate femininity to Christian transcendence; this corresponds with a desire to recapture a unified sensibility, which, Eliot argued, dissolved in the post-Reformation era. In contrast, Barnes's Jewish and homosexual characters find transcendence unattainable. As embodied in her novel's characters, the Christian feminine ideal fails because the idealization itself extends from exclusionary dogma; any aid it promises proves ineffectual, and the novel's characters, including Dr. Matthew O'Connor and Nora Flood, remain locked in temporal anguish. Current trends in modernist studies consider the role of myth in understanding individuals' creation of self or worldview; this perspective applies also in analyzing religion's role insofar as it aids the individual's search for identity and a place in history. Consequently, this dissertation helps to reinvigorate the discussion of religion's significance in a literary movement allegedly defined by its secularism. Moreover, in presenting Eliot and Barnes together, I reveal a kinship suggested by their deployment of literary history, formal innovation, and questions about religion's value. This study repositions Barnes and brings her work into the canonical modernist dialogue.

Full text
Abstract:
The general purpose of this thesis was to explore the different roles enacted by entrepreneurs when developing their firm in the market. In their daily attempts to develop their firm, entrepreneurs “wear many different hats” because they are involved in multiple situations which require their interaction with different networks of social relationships (i.e. customers, employees, suppliers, investors). Through this research, we attempt to make three related and distinct contributions: (1) identification and definition of different roles enacted by entrepreneurs within their firm; (2) development of a measurement scale for the different roles entrepreneurs enact within their firm; and (3) proposal of a model explaining the relationship between entrepreneurs’ roles, Entrepreneurial Orientation, and firm performance. The thesis is presented in the form of three related papers. Paper 1 focuses on the qualitative study of the self-reported perceptions, behaviors, and attitudes that entrepreneurs relate to their efforts of developing their firm in the market. Through in-depth interviews and following thematic analysis methodology, we identified and analyzed patterns within the qualitative data. Conceptualizing the entrepreneurial firm as a proximate social structure that represents a context in which the entrepreneur establishes close relationships and thus enacts role identities, we identify and define seven different sets of behaviors or roles. In addition, we propose a conceptual framework to explain the entrepreneurs’ agency within their firm. Based on the previously identified and defined roles, in Paper 2 we develop the measurement scale for the entrepreneurs’ roles. The items generated from the literature review and the in-depth interviews were evaluated for content validity by a group of serial entrepreneurs. A pilot test was then conducted with a network of international entrepreneurs (N=55), followed by a pre-test using an online panel of U.S. entrepreneurs (N=157) who were owners and managers of a running business that had paid salaries to the owner(s) for more than two years. Finally, the main study (N=202) was conducted utilizing the same sampling frame as the pre-test. After Confirmatory Factor Analysis and measure validation, we propose a seven-construct measurement model for the roles that entrepreneurs enact within their developing firm. In Paper 3, following the development of the measurement scale, we explore the links between the roles enacted by entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurial Orientation, and firm performance. Understanding Entrepreneurial Orientation as a way in which entrepreneurs behave when creating and developing their firm, we propose a model in which Entrepreneurial Orientation mediates the relationship between entrepreneurs’ enacted roles and the performance of their firm. Our findings suggest that Entrepreneurial Orientation mediates the relationship between at least five roles enacted by entrepreneurs and firm performance. The influence of several of the enacted roles of entrepreneurs on Entrepreneurial Orientation suggests that the entrepreneur’s agency, facilitated through the use of roles, needs to be taken into account as an antecedent in a model of entrepreneurial strategic orientation and firm performance.

Abstract:
The concept of competitiveness, for a long time considered as strictly connected to economic and financial performances, evolved, above all in recent years, toward new, wider interpretations disclosing its multidimensional nature. The shift to a multidimensional view of the phenomenon has excited an intense debate involving theoretical reflections on the features characterizing it, as well as methodological considerations on its assessment and measurement. The present research has a twofold objective: going in depth with the study of tangible and intangible aspect characterizing multidimensional competitive phenomena by assuming a micro-level point of view, and measuring competitiveness through a model-based approach. Specifically, we propose a non-parametric approach to Structural Equation Models techniques for the computation of multidimensional composite measures. Structural Equation Models tools will be used for the development of the empirical application on the italian case: a model based micro-level competitiveness indicator for the measurement of the phenomenon on a large sample of Italian small and medium enterprises will be constructed.

Abstract:
In the late 20th century several fundamental works on the subject of irony were published. Today, irony remains a fashionable topic of literary research. The aim of the present study is not to propose a new definition of irony but to determine if there is a difference between the irony of women-writers and that of men-writers. Four contemporary novelists provide the corpus for this work: Julian Barnes and David Lodge on the one hand, and Muriel Spark and A. S. Byatt on the other hand. The six novels under consideration have been grouped in pairs on the ground of their stylistic and thematic similarities. Flaubert’s Parrot and Possession are both postmodern novels dealing with the topic of literary quest. The Finishing School and Nice Work are variations of the campus novel. England, England and Aiding and Abetting explore the themes of Englishness, authenticity and artifice

Abstract:
Barnes’ A History of the World in ½ Chapters constructs an unconventional approach to history from the very beginning. The non-traditional narrative structure differs from the chronological narrative typical of history books, since this novelist´s account exposes different historical world events without following a definite timeline. Moreover, the novel has many different narrative voices which convey a different perception and experience of same events. This use of form indicates an unorthodox view of history.

This paper investigates the relationships between family firm’s CEO and firm performance in Taiwan stock-listed firms during 2008-2011. We further investigate the impact of family CEO and nonfamily CEOs characteristics on firm performance. Other findings include the following: (1) Family CEO in family firms are significantly negatively related to firm performance. (2) Whether for family members as CEO, the younger and higher education level is significantly positively related to firm performance. (3) Family CEO with international experience can help improve firm performance. (4) Nonfamily CEO has top manager experience significantly impact on firm performance. One important management implications of this paper is: If family firm still prefers to hire family members as CEO, should select with the younger, higher education level and have international experience family members, and then will be better for firm performance.

This paper documents the relationship between R&D, firm’s size and growth rate for Taiwan’s electronics firms. Based on a panel data of Taiwanese electronics firms for the period of 1992-1998, we employ the GMM technique to control the endogeneity of R&D in order to investigate the role played by R&D on the growth rate of firms in Taiwan’s electronics industry and to test the validity of Gibrat’s law.The major findings in this study are summarized as below. First, R&D effort indeed has a significantly positive impact on firm growth in Taiwan’s electronics industry. One point worth noting is that the estimate of the impact of R&D on firm growth might induce an upward bias if the endogeneity problem of R&D is not controlled. Second, we reexamine the weak form of Gibrat’s law by separating firms into several groups by size. Small firms indeed grow faster than larger ones and Gibrat’s law fails to hold for SME groups in Taiwan’s electronics industry, consistent with most previous studies. On the other hand, the validity of Gibrat’s law is supported for the group of large-scaled firms. Third, we calculate alternative measurements of the growth rate over a time span, aiming to investigate whether any substantial difference arises due to these different measurements of firm growth over a time span. Our estimates are robust to different model specifications on measuring growth, implying that it is a minor issue for how long an appropriate time span of measurement of growth is for testing Gibrat’s law.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Particulate deposition experiments were performed in a turbine accelerated deposition facility to examine the nature of flyash deposits near film cooling holes. Deposition on both bare metal and TBC coupons was studied, with hole spacings (s/d) of 2.25, 3.375, and 4.5. Sub-bituminous coal ash particles (mass mean diameter of 13 microns) were accelerated to a combustor exit flow Mach number of 0.25 and heated to 1183°C before impinging on a target coupon. The particle loading in the 1-hr tests was 310 ppmw. Blowing ratios were varied in these experiments from 0 to 4.0 with the density ratio varied approximately from 1.5 to 2.1. Particle surface temperature maps were measured using two-color pyrometry based on the RGB signals from a camera. For similar hole spacing and blowing ratio, the capture efficiency measured for the TBC surface was much higher than for the bare metal coupon due to the increase of surface temperature. Deposits on the TBC coupon were observed to be more tenacious (i.e., hard to remove) than deposits on bare-metal coupons. The capture efficiency was shown to be a function of both the hole spacing and the blowing ratio (and hence surface temperature). Temperature seemed to be the dominant factor affecting deposition propensity. The average spanwise temperature downstream of the holes for close hole spacing was only slightly lower than for the large hole spacing. Roughness parameters Ra and Rt decreased monotonically with increased blowing ratio for both hole spacings analyzed. The roughness for s/d = 3.375 was lower than that for s/d = 4.5, especially at high blowing ratio. It is thought that these data will prove useful for designers of turbines using synfuels.

Hagemann, Thomas, Sebastian Kukla, and Hubert Schwarze. "Measurement and Prediction of the Static Operating Conditions of a Large Turbine Tilting-Pad Bearing Under High Circumferential Speeds and Heavy Loads." In ASME Turbo Expo 2013: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2013-95004.

Full text
Abstract:
The identification results for the static performance characteristics of a large tilting-pad bearing in load between pad configuration are presented for specific bearing loads between 1.0 and 2.5 MPa and for circumferential speeds up to 79 m/s. The bearing is lubricated by spray-bars and can be described by the following specifications: Five pads, 0.23 nominal preload, 60% offset, 56° pad arc angle, 500 mm inner diameter, 350 mm pad length and 1.28 per mille relative bearing clearance. The axial oil flow is reduced by a fixed seal on both bearing edges which has a nominal radial clearance of 1 mm. The film pressure and the gap width are determined in the whole area of the sliding surface by an axial shift of the shaft. The bearing temperatures are measured by means of 100 thermocouples located 5 mm behind the sliding surface. The experimental results indicate that significant pad deformation occurs in circumferential and in axial direction. Also the effective supply temperatures are much higher than the nominal ones. According to the lubricant flow the sensor temperatures close to the spray-bars at the sliding surface rise about 20 K for 7 l/s and 40 K for 3.5 l/s at 3000 rpm. The temperatures are nearly constant between all pads and depend only on speed and not on load. The theoretical analyses of the bearing performance was accomplished with the bearing calculation software COMBROS. This code models the transition between laminar and turbulent flow and solves an extended Reynolds equation, the three dimensional energy equation of the film and the heat conduction equations of the shaft and the pads considering various boundary conditions due to the judgment of the user. Concerning the minimum film thickness, the maximum temperature on the sliding surface and the maximum film pressure only poor agreement was reached if the influence of the axial pad deformation was neglected. In advanced analyses a co-simulation between COMBROS and a structural mechanics software shows that an improvement of the prediction was achieved. The comparison of the measurement data and the advanced simulation shows very good agreement for the characteristic bearing parameters as well as for the local distributions of film pressure, temperature and film thickness in the whole operating range of the bearing. Further, the applied inlet mixing model for the lubricant supply process proves to be very suitable.
