Pollard, Jacqueline Anne. "The gender of belief: Women and Christianity in T. S. Eliot and Djuna Barnes." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/10333.
Full textThis dissertation considers the formal and thematic camaraderie between T. S. Eliot and Djuna Barnes. The Waste Land 's poet, whom critics often cite as exemplary of reactionary high modernism, appears an improbable companion to Nightwood 's novelist, who critics, such as Shari Benstock, characterize as epitomizing "Sapphic modernism." However, Eliot and Barnes prove complementary rather than antithetical figures in their approaches to the collapse of historical and religious authority. Through close readings, supplemented by historical and literary sources, I demonstrate how Eliot, in his criticism and poems such as "Gerontion," and Barnes, in her trans-generic novel Nightwood , recognize the instability of history as defined by man and suggest the necessity of mythmaking to establish, or confirm, personal identity. Such mythmaking incorporates, rather than rejects, traditional Christian signs. I examine how, in Eliot's poems of the 1920s and in Barnes's novel, these writers drew on Christian symbols to evoke a nurturing, intercessory female parallel to the Virgin Mary to investigate the hope for redemption in a secular world. Yet Eliot and Barnes arrive at contrary conclusions. Eliot's poems increasingly relate femininity to Christian transcendence; this corresponds with a desire to recapture a unified sensibility, which, Eliot argued, dissolved in the post-Reformation era. In contrast, Barnes's Jewish and homosexual characters find transcendence unattainable. As embodied in her novel's characters, the Christian feminine ideal fails because the idealization itself extends from exclusionary dogma; any aid it promises proves ineffectual, and the novel's characters, including Dr. Matthew O'Connor and Nora Flood, remain locked in temporal anguish. Current trends in modernist studies consider the role of myth in understanding individuals' creation of self or worldview; this perspective applies also in analyzing religion's role insofar as it aids the individual's search for identity and a place in history. Consequently, this dissertation helps to reinvigorate the discussion of religion's significance in a literary movement allegedly defined by its secularism. Moreover, in presenting Eliot and Barnes together, I reveal a kinship suggested by their deployment of literary history, formal innovation, and questions about religion's value. This study repositions Barnes and brings her work into the canonical modernist dialogue.

Full textIn the late 20th century several fundamental works on the subject of irony were published. Today, irony remains a fashionable topic of literary research. The aim of the present study is not to propose a new definition of irony but to determine if there is a difference between the irony of women-writers and that of men-writers. Four contemporary novelists provide the corpus for this work: Julian Barnes and David Lodge on the one hand, and Muriel Spark and A. S. Byatt on the other hand. The six novels under consideration have been grouped in pairs on the ground of their stylistic and thematic similarities. Flaubert’s Parrot and Possession are both postmodern novels dealing with the topic of literary quest. The Finishing School and Nice Work are variations of the campus novel. England, England and Aiding and Abetting explore the themes of Englishness, authenticity and artifice

This paper investigates the relationships between family firm’s CEO and firm performance in Taiwan stock-listed firms during 2008-2011. We further investigate the impact of family CEO and nonfamily CEOs characteristics on firm performance. Other findings include the following: (1) Family CEO in family firms are significantly negatively related to firm performance. (2) Whether for family members as CEO, the younger and higher education level is significantly positively related to firm performance. (3) Family CEO with international experience can help improve firm performance. (4) Nonfamily CEO has top manager experience significantly impact on firm performance. One important management implications of this paper is: If family firm still prefers to hire family members as CEO, should select with the younger, higher education level and have international experience family members, and then will be better for firm performance.

This paper documents the relationship between R&D, firm’s size and growth rate for Taiwan’s electronics firms. Based on a panel data of Taiwanese electronics firms for the period of 1992-1998, we employ the GMM technique to control the endogeneity of R&D in order to investigate the role played by R&D on the growth rate of firms in Taiwan’s electronics industry and to test the validity of Gibrat’s law.The major findings in this study are summarized as below. First, R&D effort indeed has a significantly positive impact on firm growth in Taiwan’s electronics industry. One point worth noting is that the estimate of the impact of R&D on firm growth might induce an upward bias if the endogeneity problem of R&D is not controlled. Second, we reexamine the weak form of Gibrat’s law by separating firms into several groups by size. Small firms indeed grow faster than larger ones and Gibrat’s law fails to hold for SME groups in Taiwan’s electronics industry, consistent with most previous studies. On the other hand, the validity of Gibrat’s law is supported for the group of large-scaled firms. Third, we calculate alternative measurements of the growth rate over a time span, aiming to investigate whether any substantial difference arises due to these different measurements of firm growth over a time span. Our estimates are robust to different model specifications on measuring growth, implying that it is a minor issue for how long an appropriate time span of measurement of growth is for testing Gibrat’s law.

This article analyses the choices of foreign direct investment strategies for multinational firms. Assume that the intermediate good of a multinational firm is imported into the host country. We shall examine how variable such as trade costs, and the numbers of upstream and downstream firms in the host country will affect the multinational firm’s FDI choice between greenfield investment and cross‐border merger and acquisition (M&A). Assume there are an upstream and a downstream market in the host country, where the multinational firm enters the downstream market and compete with the local downstream firms in Cournot fashion. The main finding is that M&A (greenfield investment) is the optimal entry mode when trade cost is small (large) and/or the upstream and downstream markets are less (more) competitive in the host country. We also compares the impacts of the foreign entry modes on the social welfare in the host country. Results show that the host country welfare is higher under greenfield investment (M&A) if trade cost is small (large). Hence, the preferences on the entry mode of the multinational firms and the host country coincide only if the trade cost is medium.

The purpose of my thesis is to describe the firm’s investing behavior under demand with uncertainty. We set up a 2-stage game;in stage 1, the incumbent firm decides its output capacity before the competitor entries into the market, in stage 2, the incumbent firm and its competitor engage in Cournot competition. There are two parts in this thesis. We discuss the incumbent firm’s investing behavior when the competitor has no fixed cost in the fist part, and the major conclusion of this part is that when the risky of climate increases, the firm will decrease to set the output capacity and prefer to join Cournot competition by the real level of climate. when marginal cost of investment increases, the firm will also decrease to set the output capacity. And we discuss the incumbent firm’s investing behavior when the competitor has fixed cost in the second part, and the major conclusion of this part is that when the risky of climate increases, the firm will prefer to set deter-entry capacity to prevent the competitor from entering market, or when marginal cost of investment increases, the firm will prefer to set monopoly capacity to prevent the competitor from entering market.

As we can see, many existent products have to be united together when using them in order to generate their product values, such as video and tapes, computer hardware and software, ATM machine and our ATM card, etc. Generally speaking, these united products are called “system product.” The purpose for this thesis is to investigate the effect of compatibility, network externality, and system technology disclosure and entry, to firms’ behaviors in a Cournot competition. The differences between this thesis and the existing literature are several folds. First, we assume compatibility among products is asymmetric, and is a long-term endogenous variable for each firm. Second, a two-period model is set up. Firms choose the degree of compatibility conditional on their own technology level, and then choose quantity in a Cournot-competition market. Third, a firm, based on strategy considerations, may franchise its manufacturing technology to new firms, and hence entices more entrants. We investigate how the effect of this sort of technology disclosure works in this thesis. Forth, to see whether the competitive equilibrium achieves the social optimality, we also take into account social welfare issue. Finally, the comparative statics also explore how the network externality, network size, production cost, compatibility, the number of entrants, franchising fee, and product differentiation influence the firms’ behaviors. The first finding coming out is that, when the product compatibility of the rival firm is decreasing, the firms will increase their own compatibility to the rival firm’s product. This enables firms to enlarge their market shares and profits. If a firm has a relatively low product cost, and a relatively low compatibility, it can increase its output level and hence profit by decreasing product differentiation. If compatibility is a long-term endogenous variable, then the equilibrium compatibility level will be lower when the firm has a lower production cost or a lower product differentiation. On the contrary, if the firm has a relatively higher production cost or a higher network effect, then its equilibrium compatibility will get larger. When a firm discloses its system technology, the outputs and profits of all incumbents are decreasing in the number of new entrants. However, if the firm who discloses its technology sets an enough high franchising fee, its profit may increase. As for the social welfare, the competitive equilibrium compatibility achieves the social optimality no matter before or after technology disclosure if the marginal cost of compatibility change is constant.

Under a critical assumption of imperfectly competitive deposit market, the paper establishes a theoretical model to discuss the relationships between technology decisions and oligopolistic competition. The paper adopts the two-stage analysis approach and the conjectural variation analysis approach to investigate whether the technology decision which the banking firm choosed could achieved the goal of maximum the profit. The primary conclusions include the following:1. If the "relatively higher ratio of information technology" has been used, the banking firm will increase its deposits.2. When both the conjectural variations of deposit and technology are consistant, the banking firm will choose the techonology which can minimize its total cost.3. If the actural reaction of competitors are rised in banking firm''s estimations, the banking firm will choose the "relatively higher ratio of information technology".4. If the banking firms think that his decisions will not influence the competitors'' actions and the deposits business are strategic subsititutes, the banking firm will select the "relatively higher ratio of information technology".

This paper examined the relationship between the independent director''s directorship and firm''s volatility. Without considering the firm''s specific characteristic, the relationship between the number of directorships per independent director and firm''s variability is not found. However, after considering the firm''s specific characteristic, we find that when the board has higher independence level, the independent directors have reputational capital and provide better monitoring. They will make the robust decisions which would reduce the firm''s volatility. When the firm''s performance is worse, the CEO will be replaced. Furthermore, we consider the independent directors'' professional abilities. We do not find that the independent directors'' professional abilities can reduce the firm''s variability. We find that the busy directors with law, business, political background or relevant industrial experience have the better supervisory.

ABSTRACT The stability of economy, bull market, and the release of restrictions on M&A activities encourage the increasing M&A activities in Taiwan. This study attempts to examine the information content of announcing M&A events. The sample includes 97 listed firms exchanged on the Taiwan Stock Exchange which ever declared to acquire other firm for the first time during the period 1990-1998 and for which necessary data were available. This study adopts event study methodology, and considers that if Arch effect is found in the market model, GARCH model will be used instead. This research finds out that:(1) There is a negative relation between the insider’s ownership and the bidder’s gains. (2) There is a significant negative relation between the percentage of bidder common stock owned by other firms and the bidder’s gains. (3) The bidders who have worse management performance gain significantly more than the bidders who have better management performance. (4) The less the free cash flow of the acquiring firm is, the higher the bidder gains is. (5) Announcing of international or domestic M&A event doesn’t affect the bidder gains differently. (6) Announcing of inter-industry or intra-industry M&A event doesn’t affect the bidder gains differently. (7) The percentage of bidder common stock owned by other firms and trust institutions, corporate performance, free cash flow, inter-industry or intra-industry M&A and the size of the bidders are explanatory variables of bidder’s gains.

Title of thesis: Firms’ Growth Strategies - Total page: 82 Hierarchy, Market & Network Key word: growth strategies; organizational hierarchy; acquisition; network; comparative case studies Name of Institute: Graduate Institute of International Business, Tamkang University Graduate Date: June, 1999 Degree Conferred: Master Abstract: This paper draws on the received work to direct attention to three corporate strategies available for firms’ pursuit of growth. First, based on the evolutionary perspective, we develop the generic expansion strategy with its insistence on structural hierarchy. Second, following the transaction cost theory, we point to the strategy of acquisition, capable of displacing market with organization. Third, we suggest the importance of inter-firm relations, arguing that firms can pursue such network strategies as strategic alliances for growth. Using comparative case studies, we apply the proposed model to analyzing the uniqueness and commonality of the development of three Taiwanese PC firms – Acer, Mitac and FIC.

The performance of innovation will icrease the value which firms create. In other words, innovation is the biggest source of business'' profit. Recently, the study of the innovation issue is flourishing ,but there still have no integrated study yet. This study tries to apply the Chandler model(1962),structure follows strategy,to the activities of organizational innovation and explore the influence of each variable to the performance of innovation in the process of innovative activities. The capability of innovation is internal resource of the firm. And the work environment for creativity is the external environment. The study match the capability of innovation and the work environment for creativity as the different types of innovative environment. Then choose the proper innovative strategy and project management structure for the specific innovative environment to attain higher performance of innovation. The main research target is the high-tech industry which have to do the investigation continually to maintain their exist niche and promote their competitive advantages. We mailed 557 examinations and the quantities of the valid examinations are 83. We generalize some important conclusions as follow: 1. The research results reveal that the different types of innovative environment will have different performance of innovation. And that is also the main idea of this research. 2. After adding "types of innovative strategy" and "types of project management structure" these two variables, we have some conclusions as below: (1) The types of innovative strategy''s influence on the types of innovative environment and the performance of innovation. A. High capability of innovation take the radical innovative strategy will have better performance of innovation. B. Low capability of innovation take the incremental innovative strategy will have better performance of innovation. (2) The types of project management structure''s influence on the types of innovative environment and the performance of innovation. A.The best type of innovative environment takes the project structure will have better performance of innovation. B.The type of capability leader takes the matrix project structure will have better performance of innovation. C.The type of environment leader takes the matrix project structure will have better performance of innovation.

In the field of strategic management, the policymakers want to understand what is the main factor of influencing a company performance. Is it based on the situation of the industrial structure, or the firm’s resource? There are two kinds of theories about explaining the sources of firm performance, industrial organization theory and resource-based view. The first one considers that the industrial structure results in various performances of the firms, the second one considers that the unique resource and capability of a firm is the key factor to make profits. EVA, MVA, and ROA as company performance and VARCOMP procedure are used in this study to utilize and understand whether the main factor of influencing a company performance has various effects on the three stages of the IT industry value chain. In addition, the One Way ANOVA is used to examine whether the effect of added value is different at each stages of IT industry value chain. The results of this study are as follows: The result shows that the stage a firm located did not have a significant effect on the firm performance. The firm factor is the primary determinant. It means that the unique resource and ability that is difficult to imitate are the main source that drive the firm’s performance. The firms in the middle-stream of IT industry outperform the firms in the up- and down-stream. This finding is not consistent with the “smiling curve”.

This study reexamines the effect of diversification on firm’s value. We examine the effect of diversification type to excess value using Berger and Ofek(1995) procedure and excess q value using Lamont and Polk(2001) procedure. We use two alternative econometric techniques to control for the endogeneity of the diversification decision. We will utilize OLS, fixed effect model, and instrumental variable model to analyze how diversification effects firm’s value. Further, we also consider the effect of diversification type to corporate leverage and how growth opportunities, cashflow position and expected equity return destroy firm’s value. Using a sample of 2357 firm-years between 1994 and 2002, our study finds that fixed effect model would be proper to measure, and explore that segment diversification will decrease firm’s value, geographic diversification will increase firm’s value, and geographic-segment diversification will decrease firm’s value. These results point to the importance of explicitly modeling the endogeneity of the diversification status in analyzing its effect on firm value. Further, we find that corporate leverage is positively related to segment diversification, but negatively related to geographic diversification. In addition to, corporate leverage is inverted U-shape non-linear relation to segment diversification, but U-shape non-linear relation to geographic diversification. We also find that segment diversified firm which has high grow opportunities or strong cashflow position would increase firm’s value, and segment diversified firms would increase firm’s value by decreasing it’s diversified level. If a focus-decreasing segment diversified firm which has low grow opportunities or weak cashflow, it would more destroy firm’s value. Finally, we find that discount firms have insignificantly higher subsequent returns than premium firms. According to assets valuation model, we know that high expected returns imply low value today. Thus a firm which has higher subsequent returns might lead it to be a discount firm.

“People” is the most important resource in a public accounting (CPA) firm. The quality and quantity of the human resource affect the service quality and the operating cost of this labor-oriented industry. For a long time, high employee turnover rate has been the most serious problem for the CPA firm’s human resource management. Although a normal employee turnover rate is necessary for the growth of a CPA firm, an abnormal turnover rate would not only affect the quality of the service, but also make a gap between experienced and un-experienced personnel. Facing such high turnover rates and recruit costs, a CPA firm must respond to this issue and adjust its human resource policy. The objective of this research is to find out the differences between CPA firms’ human resource policies in order to provide guidelines for them to increase job satisfaction, decrease an employee’s will for leaving and decrease turnover rate. First, this thesis analyzes the definition of resignation or job fluctuation, types and effects, and models of resignation theory. Domestic and foreign cases are researched. The method used in this thesis is done by analyzing cases and interviews with the big five international CPA firms. There are four topics in this research, “salary and benefit”, “job expectation”, “work pressure and workload” and “education opportunity and professional development”. The result of this research shows little difference between the big five international CPA firms in Taiwan in turns of salary, benefit, job expectation, workload, education opportunity and professional development. In other words, there is no CPA firm that has unique human resource policy. A CPA firm should face the reason of resignation, not just focus on the human resource competition between CPA firms. A CPA firm should make its human resource policy different from others’, and work hard towards an environment to let employee stay.

Green-revolution has become the acknowledged opinion recently, so that the reduction of global warming gases and development in greening products have posed an urgent call for both private and public sectors in Taiwan to adopt immediate actions to response. Energy audit can help us to monitor production procedures and collect energy consumption data in the system. It can reflect, to certain degree, detailed energy flows for each production procedure and equipment. The effectiveness of energy audit system has been examined as well as the appropriateness of top-down implementation structure has been discussed in this study. It is hope that the conceptual structure delineated in this study can be of help to formulate bottom-up policy structure for firms in industrial sector to perform a self-governed energy audit as well as environmental management systems. More reliable energy flow data from energy demand side are expected to obtain so that government can be of better control of the potential estimation of the energy conservation in related industrial sectors. This study also constructs an analytical model, which takes account of energy use, environment impact and manufacturer’s economic output performance (3E). It is the intention of this model to demonstrate the application of 3E aspects as part of the consideration of production strategic planning. Under the implementation of model, an integrated steel firm''''s hot-rolled products is chosen as case study, product yields of this firm in 2000 are estimated accordingly by the model. Simulations are also proceeded under the assumption of specific technical and resources constraints.

How the tax integration influences the firm''s financial policy. his study focus on discussion of financial policy influenced by tax integration that adopted by R. O. C. Government. Since the income tax is consistent with the real world, the famous theory of Miller model that tax doesn''t change the financial decision of the firms may be not real. The policy of integration adopted by R. O. C. Government consists of two major component, one is the integration of the firm and individual income tax, the other is retained earning tax.My results in the study are derived by the model Colin and Doran (1992). First discussion the capital-structure decision with both tax integration and retained earning tax, next argue how the retained earning tax influenced the dividend policy of the firms. Finally, the study show that a change in the firms weighted average cost of capital.

Many commentators believe that the higher the percentage of independent directors and supervisors, the better the financial performance of firms. A competent authority in Taiwan requested that newly listed companies should hire independent directors and supervisors after February 22nd, 2002. However, the empirical results in this paper challenge the conventional point of view on this topic in the literature. And in addition, this study finds that the promulgation of the 2002 regulation has brought with it some negative effects. First, the results of this study suggest that the percentage of independent directors and supervisors has a nonlinear relationship with firm performance. Second, the empirical findings of this study show that, affected by the new regulation, some bad companies that didn’t have to follow the new regulation will still voluntarily hire independent directors and supervisors in order to prevent investors from discovering their true quality. Finally, in this paper, we also find that the quality of the independent directors and supervisors is very important for firm performance and should be requested more completely and strictly to make sure that the monitoring mechanism of the firm really works.

Owning to customers’ demands are changing all the time, and the business must understand what customers’ demands while changing, so they would respond effectively, and we called that is domain knowledge specificity. In the next place, the business sometimes can’t respond the demands at once,so they should adjust their available resources and capabilities. The business has to seek for outward capabilities combined with them when they lack of these capabilities, and we called that are dynamic capability, discussed by this study. Through this way, the business can respond the customers’ demands. Therefore, this study tells us that the first thing should be knew by the business is to understand customers’ demands. Secondly, the business must have the capabilities to respond the customers’ demands, and this competence is recombined by previous resources and capabilities or from combination of external capabilities. If they respond accurately, the customers will continue the partnership with this business. The methodology of this study is case study analyzing the business with the partnership continuance. The results of this research show that the positive relation between domain knowledge specificity of the business on customers’demands and how the business understands customers’ demands. The positive relationship between the levels of the business understanding the customers’ demands and the response of dynamic capability to the customers’demands. The positive relation between the business responds customers’demands and partnership continuance. The results provide the business to understand customers’ demands and the way of adjusting capability in order to respond customers’ demands and maintain both parties’ relationships.

Environmental protection and community relations are supposed to be afirm''s social responsibilities. Because of the essential distinction betweenthem, these two responsibilities can not be completely traded off each other. There exists an endurable limit of pollutants discharged from the plant to thesurrounding residents owing to humans'' physiological and safety needs. Thisresearch is a case study that investigates the effect of Shieh-Ho PowerStation''s efforts in environmental protection on its relations with communities. This study is composed of factual analysis, in-depth interview with communityopinion leaders, and questionnaire survey to the people in three communities.Result shows that there exists multiplier effects of the firm''s efforts inenvironmental protection on its community relations. The actual pollutant levelneeds to be kept below the endurable limit, then the firm can hopefully achievea better community relations.

XBRL technology is an eXtensible Business Reporting Language. During the promotion, government, practice and academic have noticed and recognized all benefits of XBRL. Ko (2000) said that the quality of information disclosure will be affected by the ownership structure. Therefore, this study investigated whether the ownership diversification have impacted on the firm’s decision to voluntarily adopt XBRL. This variable has never been mentioned and discussed in previous studies. This study investigated three countries including United States, China, and Taiwan. Whether ownership diversification is related to Firm’s voluntary adoption of XBRL? Result of this study shows the more diversity of ownership, the more probability for firms to adopt XBRL voluntarily in United States and Taiwan. However, there is an opposite result in China. Companies more likely adopt XBRL voluntarily when the ownership structure more concentrates. After further analysis in ownership structure of adoption China companies, the ratio of the government’s shares is very high. Probably, this is the reason why the more concentrate of ownership company will more likely adopt XBRL voluntarily. The findings of this study could be a reference for future relevant researches.

The popularity of the web application has made a change to human life and brought a new topic for media studying. In recent years, the e-commerce started to prevail and the virtual communities became an important platform for the internet companies to deal with e-commerce. Many companies started to establish the official virtual community to improve their interactions with clients one after another. As a result, the virtual community is naturally being taken as an internet marketing strategy by the companies. Although many companies have established the official virtual communities, only very few of them are able to come up with successful management and gain value from success. Based on the review of the related studies, this research focuses on how the content quality and the strength of the connection among members impact on the member’s trust and follow-up behavior in the virtual community environment. This study integrates the caused and effect influencing the corporate brand proposed by Porter et al (2008) and Sichtmann (2007) to discuss the impact of the quality content on the connection among community members and the impact of the members on the trust in the official community according to the attribution theory. Further, this study discusses whether the follow-up brand loyalty has an impact on the willingness for developing new products and the trust. The target of this study is mainly students. Through the internet survey, this research receives 700 questionnaires back and 614 of them are valid. After conducting the structural equation verification using AMOS, the empirical result of the path analysis shows: (1) the content quality of the virtual community has a significant positive impact on the community member’s value sharing with the person in charge the community and their trust and belief in terms of respective attitude; (2) the social inlaid degree between the community members has a significant positive impact on the community member’s value sharing with the person in charge the community and their trust and belief in terms of respective attitude; (3) the community member has a significant impact on the in-charging person’s value sharing and the trust and belief in terms of respective attitude; (4) the trust has a significant positive impact on brand loyalty and willingness for developing new products.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of conversion premium when the US companies issue convertible debts. This study contributes to provide several explanations based on the theories of security design. The main results are summarized as follows. It finds that issuers with different characteristics would set distinct premiums, and in particular, it observes variant considerations of the conversion exercise price in different industries. The results observed by the whole sample regression show that the issuers with high financial leverage, large principal amount, call policy and good investment opportunities in bull market will set higher conversion premium. Moreover, from the sub-samples of industry classifications, it obtains that there appear different effect factors when the issuers in different industries offer the convertible debts.

In this thesis I develop a signaling model to analyze a firm'' s investment decision when management has private information that investors do not know. The model extends Myers and Majluf ( 1984 ) by considering more types of information asymmetries. In addition to the net present value of the investmentproject and the value of the firm''s asset-in-place , the probability of aliquidity shock, which is the probability that manager has to sell his sharesbefore the value of the firm is realized, is also considered as the manager''sprivate information.Several interesting results follow. First, if manager posseses private information about the value of the firm''s asset-in-place and the probability of a liquidity shock, then as in Myers and Majluf the manager may forsake valuable investment projects. Moreover, the extent ofunderinvestment in this case is even more serious than that in Myers and Majluf.Second, if the manager''s private information is about the net presentvalue of the investment opportunity and the probability of a liquidity shock, then both overinvestment and underinvestment are possible. Finally, when theprobabaility of a liquidity shock is the manager''s private information ,stockprices may fall when the liquidity shock occurs even if the manager can provethat the sale of shares does not have information contents.

Firm''s Optimal Return and Pricing Policy on Channel Coordination ABSTRACT This study explored the return policy under the channel coordination. The researcher used the game theory and newsboy problem to form return and pricing models between the channel members--manufacturer and retailer. In this study, four alternative models--whether these two parties coordinate and whether manufacturer adopts the return policy--were discussed. In addition, the researcher used the soft-package of Mathematica and numerical parameters to provide numerical examples. According to the numerical examples, the following results were derived. 1. Under non-coordination, the return policy increases the value of retail price; however, under coordination, the return policy decreases the value of retail price. 1. Under non-coordination, the return policy decreases the quantities; however, under coordination, the return policy increases quantities. 1. Whether manufacturer adopts the return policy or not, retailer''s profit will increase under coordination. 1. Manufacturer''s profit will raise if he adopts the return policy and coordinate with retailer. In a word, for manufacturer, the return policy is gainful. That''s because return policy will increase wholesale price, and manufacturer''s profit. Therefore manufacturer will prefer to adopt return policy. Whether manufacturer adopts return policy or not, retailer''s profit will increase under coordination. So the whole channel profit will raise when two parties--manufacturer and retailer--coordinate. Key Word: return policy, channel coordination, game theory, newsboy problem.

Green-revolution has become the acknowledged opinion recently, so that the reduction of global warming gases and development in greening products have posed an urgent call for both private and public sectors in Taiwan to adopt immediate actions to response. It is acknowledged that the energy consumption data collected by energy audit system, with the help of the monitoring procedures inherent in the system, can reflect, to certain degree, detailed energy flows for each and every production procedure and equipment. The effectiveness of energy audit system has been examined as well as the appropriateness of top-down implementation structure has been discussed in this study. Therefore the study construct the firm''s self-governed energy audit system, which incorporate both energy audit system and environmental management system. The firm''s self-governed energy audit system may be deemed as a more holistic analytical system to provide comprehensive data for both energy as well as environmental management purposes. It is the purpose of this study to construct an analytical model, which give a consideration of energy, environment and economic(3E)sides. Namely the model incorporate the information from firm''s self-governed energy audit system, life cycle assessment(LCA)and firm''s internal economic parts for industrial sectors in Taiwan to perform energy management and product production strategic planning. One objective of such model shows the possibility to integrate the energy using, environmental impacting, and information with production strategic planning. The other illustrates the information is integrated by the operation and application of production strategic planning. In the application with this model one job shop of printed circuit board(PCB)is chosen to perform. Under the model, even though facing the more free energy market structure and stricter quantity standard of environment, the job shop still can take the input essentials combination, improvement of energy efficiency, renew the product technology, and replacement of energy into considering of firm''s production strategic planning. Also, the simulation results show that the job shop could utilize resource more efficiently. Moreover the self-governed energy audit system could offer more reliable energy flow data from energy demand side. So that government can be of better control of the potential estimation of the energy conservation in related industrial sectors.

In commercial sponsorship research, little attention has been given to the congruent relationship between the three event entities-consumer, sponsoring brand, and sponsored event and their effects on consumer''s attitude towards sponsoring brands. This study aims to investigate the effects of the three fits including consumers'' event liking, consumer brand identification and event-brand congruence on sponsoring brand attitude. A total of 365 valid samples were collected from the 21st Summer Deaflympic Taipei 2009 to test the structured relationship. The empirical results confirm the positive impacts of the three perceived fits on consumers'' brand attitude. Of particularly important, the consumers'' event liking is the antecedent of the other two perceived fits. The event-sponsoring brand fit plays a mediating role between consumer-brand identification and brand attitude. Consumers'' event liking has a positive indirect effect through the brand identification on the event-brand fit.

Hypotheses on firms’ capital structure include: (1) Firms have an optimal capital structure, (2) Firms’ financing decision follows a pecking order, (3) Firms time the equity issuing, and (4) Changes in firms’ capital structure in terms of book value of debt over market value of equity simply reflect the changes in equity price. In the trade-off model, firms will identify their optimal leverage by weighing the costs and benefits of an additional dollar of debt. Myers (1984) develops an alternative theory known as the pecking order model of financing decisions. Under informational asymmetries, firms finance new investments first with retained earnings, then with safe debt, then with risky debt, and finally with equity. Baker and Jeffrey (2002) found that low leverage firms are those that raised funds when their market valuations were high, as measured by the market-to-book ratio, while high leverage firms are those that raised funds when their market valuations were low. In other words, market timing phenomenon can explain well on capital structure. However, Welch (2004) provided evidence that the determinant of debt ratios are stock returns. Changes in firms’ capital structure in terms of book value of debt over market value of equity simply reflect the changes in equity price. A Two-stage Probit Switching Regression model is used to examine whether investing in China has impacts on firms’ determination of capital structure or not. The empirical results provided evidence that does not support the static trade-off model, pecking order theory, and market timing phenomenon. We find that stock returns are a major determinant of debt ratios in Taiwan. In other words, our findings in debt ratio dynamics are in accordance with those of Welch (2004).

In recent years, behavioral finance has become a prominent learning and has different interpretations for traditional efficiency markets. This study explores the impact of “limited attention” on investors’ stock trading behavior. What factors in the market are related to limited attention, and these factors are whether or not human investment behavior will have a material impact. This study uses the listed electronic stocks in the Taiwan stock market as the subject of research, and constructs market attention indicators to measure investor attention. The empirical results show that the firm''s scale has a significant negative correlation with investors'' attention. After controlling the firm''s characteristic variables such as trading volume, debt ratio, institutional investors’ holdings and price-book ratio, the firm''s scale remains negatively affected by investors'' attention. It shows that investors still have great concerns for small-scale companies.

In order to understand the influence of independent directors on the performance of different business firms in Taiwan, all of the first listed companies on the Taiwan Stock Exchange from 2003 to 2012 were sampled. The research investigated the relationship between independent variables such as family controlling rights, and the characteristics of the independent director with the dependent variables, business performance and the firm value. Using regression models, results showed that there is a positive correlation between the independent directors and the business performance. This paper further sought to determine the relationship among the structure of the independent directors, which includes (1) independent directors from academia, (2) female independent directors, and (3) independent directors personnel transaction, on the firm’s performance. The results showed that there is a significant negative correlation between the female independent directors and the business firm’s performance. Furthermore, there is a strong positive correlation between the independent directors from academia and the firm value. Finally, the independent directors personnel transaction and analysts earnings forecast error is strongly negatively correlated.

Electronic Data Interchange(EDI) is a subset of interorganizational systems. It combines the computer and communication technology and allows business partners to send and receive standardized commercial documents electronically, instead of writing and mailing them manually . EDI has become more and more important. What the enterprises concern is how to transfer EDI effectively, and to exert all its potentional benefits. A survey was distributed to 189 Taiwan''''s EDI users to determine the critical success factors for EDI, and to explore the effects of industry''''s (service or manufacturing industry, EDI project), firm''''s characteristics (e.g. size, computerize experience, MIS department, EDI experience, EDI volume, voluntary or imposed) and manager''''s roles(general manager or MIS manager). Twenty five CSFs were identified from various sources. A factor analysis was performed to identify five composite CSFs : organizational factor, technical factor, strategic factor, systematic factor and industrial factor. Then, a MANOVA procedure was used to test for the effects of industry''''s, firm''''s characteristics and manager''''s roles on EDI''''s CSFs evaluation. The results indicate that service industry emphasizes more on organizational, systematic and industrial factors than manufacturing industry. Customs EDI and distribution EDI emphasize more on industrial environmental factor then manufacturing EDI; enterprises with MIS department emphasize on technical factor; high EDI volume users emphasize more on systematic factor then low EDI volume users ; MIS managers emphasize more on technical factor then general managers, and general managers emphasize on systematic factor. Finally, this research made some suggestions for government and business implementing EDI, and proposed some research directions for future study.

In the past, the research on environmental regulations or environmental performance was mostly related to the productivity-related research of environmental regulations. This study explores the impact of the environment on manufacturers from different perspectives of involuntary use, but promotes corporate social responsibility by voluntary. The environmental performance indicators in (Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR) are important variables, and the electronics industry with more serious pollution problems in Taiwan is the main research object. The study period is five years, from 2012 to 2016;the total sample size is 44 TSE and OTC firms. These study established a translog cost function to explore the relationship between the environmental performance of CSR and the total cost of electronic industry firms in Taiwan, and verify the “Porter Hypothesis”. Whether strong theory is established. The estimated value of environmental performance to total cost of the electronic industry firms in Taiwan is -1.6582, which means that whenever the company''s environmental performance score increases by 1%, the total cost of the enterprise can be reduced by 1.6%. The results show that when manufacturers are willing to enhance environmental protection. Efforts can indeed reduce costs and increase productivity, thereby increasing the competitiveness of enterprises, and the results of this study are also consistent with the strong theory in "Porter Hypothesis".

Board of directors help corporation to make right decision and invest profitable project. But how investors know whether board of directors’ function work efficiently? This study gives another way to understand corporation governance. I try to analyze the relationship between board of characteristics and corporation governance mechanisms in S&P 500 from 2002 to 2006. This investigation exhibits positive relationship between compensation and firm performance and weakly positive relationship between director experience and performance. In recent years, with the rise of the labor ideology in Taiwan, many enterprises adopt policies including layoffs or unpaid leave in order to decrease personnel costs. The policies adopted by the enterprises caused labor dispute leading to strike of employees. This drastic action interrupts production and affects firm performance. Thus, the study focuses on the issue about employee to examine the relationship between employee''s corporate social responsibility and firm performance. This paper uses a sample of publicly listed companies in Taiwan and adopts hierarchical regression to test hypothese. The results find that negative employee''s corporate social responsibility lead to lower firm performance. Labor turnover rate is significantly negative related to firm performance. Specially, this paper considers the moderating effect of labor salary. The results show that labor salary is not significantly negative moderated effect between negative employee''s corporate social responsibility and firm performance. However, labor salary has significantly negative moderated effect between labor turnover rate and firm performance.
