Abstract:
Aim of study: To understand how a consumer’s decision-making process on wine choice varies when faced with labels introducing either a scratch-and-sniff strip or a Thermo-sensitive indicator as a novelty. Area of study: Navarre (Spain). Material and methods: This study applies the laddering survey method based on means-end chain theory to link product attributes to consumption benefits and values pursued. Main results: In the context of these sensory innovations in labeling, the brand name of a product ceases to be of importance in this sector, with the new label becoming the relevant issue, associated with quality and aspects related to social wine consumption. In addition to this, these innovations make the decision-making process more complex by including more aspects of consumers’ personalities. Research highlights: For innovative labeling introducing sensory cues, the complexity of consumers’ selection process increases, the wine brand loses importance and the label design gains importance as a signal of quality. Labeling innovations could be a great opportunity for wine companies with low marketplace positioning to improve their position and obtain better results in a highly competitive market.

Abstract:
AbstractThis book is designed to support you to work through the ten building blocks of the Business Model Template (BMT), grouped into three stages, from left to right and top to bottom. The underlying idea is to develop a business model from scratch by following the various steps in the Business Model Template in a straightforward and almost linear manner. There is nothing wrong with your first attempt at developing a business model. But there are many other possible routes. Here we outline five possible alternatives: (1) Idea-driven, (2) Proposition-driven, (3) Network-driven, (4) Impact-driven, and (5) Competence-driven. Depending on your circumstances, the networks you have access to, and the nature of the idea you would like to pursue, an alternative route might be worth looking at. You can still use all of the building blocks of the Business Model Template, but in a different order. That part is up to you.

Abstract:
Becoming a well-rounded data analyst requires more than the skills covered in this book. This postlude sketches some ways in which the types of thinking covered here can be extended to real problems in data analysis. Different ways of evaluating the assumptions of linear regression are considered, including plotting, hypothesis tests, and out-of-sample prediction. If the assumptions are not met, simple linear regression can be extended in various ways, including multiple regression, generalized linear models, and mixed models (among many other possibilities). This postlude concludes with a short discussion of the themes of the book: probabilistic models, methodological pluralism, and the value of elementary statistical thinking.

Abstract:
Statistics is concerned with using data to learn about the world. In this book, concepts for reasoning from data are developed using a combination of math and simulation. Using a running example, we will consider probability theory, statistical estimation, and statistical inference. Estimation and inference will be considered from three different perspectives.

Abstract:
This chapter marks a turning point. The preceding two chapters considered probability theory, which describes the kinds of data that result from specified processes. The remainder of the book consider statistical estimation and inference, which starts with data and attempts to make conclusions about the process that produced them. First, general concepts in statistical estimation and inference are discussed, and then simple linear regression from nonparametric/semiparametric, parametric frequentist, and Bayesian perspectives.

Abstract:
There are two traditional ways to learn statistics. One way is to pass over the mathematical underpinnings and focus on developing relatively shallow knowledge about a wide variety of statistical procedures. Another is to spend years learning the mathematics necessary for traditional mathematical approaches to statistics. For many people who need to analyze data, neither of these paths is sufficient. The shallow-but-wide approach fails to provide students with the foundation that allows for confidence and creativity in analyzing modern datasets, and many researchers—though possibly motivated to learn math—do not have the background to start immediately on a traditional mathematical approach. This book exists to help researchers jump between tracks, providing motivated students whose knowledge of mathematics may be incomplete or rusty with a serious introduction to statistics that allows further study from more mathematical sources. This is done by focusing on a single statistical technique that is fundamental to statistical practice—simple linear regression—and supplementing the exposition with ample simulations conducted in the statistical programming language R. The first half of the book focuses on preliminaries, including the use of R and probability theory, whereas the second half covers statistical estimation and inference from semiparametric, parametric, and Bayesian perspectives.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī Library of Damascus was the oldest continuously surviving book collection of the city when the modern Public Library was founded in 1878. It discusses the practicalities of building up such a library from scratch in late Mamluk Damascus and shows to what extent post-canonical hadith scholarship dominated this book collection. As this line of scholarship was on its way out Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī had to take enormous strides to revive books that needed oral transmission from an authorized teacher. He finally endowed this library - accompanied by a ritualistic binge reading of the books – to create a monument to one part of Syrian book culture that was about to vanish. He placed this monument into one of the most meaningful places to commemorate a way of writerly culture that had been closely tied to his family and quarter.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how Kris and Gombrich decided to update the caricature book in two directions. First, they planned to expand the use of social psychology, tracing links from caricature to magic, propaganda, and social aggression. Second, they looked to tie caricature to conceptual constructs in image making. These ambitions meant rewriting the manuscript nearly from scratch. By September 1949, Gombrich and Kris had four different drafts of the caricature book: the prewar manuscript, the abbreviated wartime manuscript, the one incorporating the new emphasis on a psychology of perception, and the one giving greater prominence to social psychology. During the next four months, the two scholars attempted to salvage a project that threatened to break apart.

Abstract:
South Korea is one of the most advanced developed countries. South Korea's industrialization, software and hardware products and services, technological advancements, and management styles are world-renowned concepts. It has also achieved many milestones in urbanization to provide a better life for its citizens. In this current global urban scenario, it is taking a grand leap forward to an even higher level in its development of Smart City structures. In this light, this book chapter discusses and explores South Korea's Songdo Smart City. The book chapter will give a 360-degree view of Songdo Smart City project—specifically with regards to planning, design, deployment of IoT technologies, focused on urban analytics. The chapter's major areas of focus will be looking into Songdo from the perspectives of its being (1) an Aerotropolis and (2) a Ubiquitous city. Songdo IBD is a new ubiquitous city built from scratch on 600 hectares of domesticated land along Incheon's seaside. With all the modern amenities and LEED-certified buildings, the Songdo Smart City will also survive in the future.

Abstract:
We are in the middle of a scientific revolution in the biological sciences. In the 1970s scientists discovered ways to cut and paste DNA in a test tube, and then introduce gene ‘constructs’ into first bacteria and then more complex organisms such as mice. This made it possible to, for instance, produce human insulin artificially in bacteria, but also to create genetically modified mice for medical research. But such genetic engineering methods were expensive, time-consuming, and limited to only certain organisms. In contrast in recent years, new ‘genome editing’ approaches, particularly one called CRISPR/Cas, now makes it possible for the first time to precisely edit the genome of living cells from practically any species. Genome editing looks set to revolutionise medical research, clinical medicine, and agriculture, as the rest of this book will explain. But this is only one of the new technologies discussed In Redesigning Life. Others include optogenetics, which makes it possible to activate nerve cells in the brain using light, ‘organoids’, which are created from human stem cells, and have similarities to human organs like the kidney, intestines, heart, and even brain, and synthetic biology, which seeks to create artificial bacteria and yeast chromosomes from scratch and even reconfigure the genetic code. All of these technologies have great potential for improving human society, but they also raise many ethical and socio-political issues and questions about ways they might be misused, which will be explored in this book.
