Abstract:
Walter J. Ong is well known for his in-depth work in studies of orality and literacy. This article proposes reading Ong in more expansive terms, as a cultural critic with a wide range of knowledge and a deep sense that all things are connected. This conviction of all things’ interrelationship, combined with the sense that, in the words of Gerard Manley Hopkins, all the “world is charged with the grandeur of God,” yielded in Ong insights into a broad array of subjects. Many of these insights grow out of, but are not limited to, his orality–literacy studies.

Abstract:
The enactment of the Statute of Westminster in 1931 represents one of the most significant events in the history of the British Empire. The very name of this historic piece of legislation, with its medieval antecedents, epitomizes a sense of enduring grandeur and dignity. The Statute of Westminster recognized significant advances in the evolution of the self-governing Dominions into fully sovereign states. The term “Dominion” was initially adopted in relation to Canada, but was extended in 1907 to refer to all self-governing colonies of white settlement that had been evolving in the direction of greater autonomy since the middle of the nineteenth century. By the early 1930s, the Dominions included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland, and the Irish Free State.

Abstract:
Eighteenth-century Spain was haunted by a sense of decadence. Consequently, intellectual innovation developed in its attempt to recover its lost grandeur while keeping its Catholic culture. In such a context, politicaleconomic reflection focused in a remarkable way on a scientific approach to social habits. Reception of foreign developments was adapted to a framework that fostered the enhancement of individualism but not of individual self-determination. The first part of the article shows that the approach to customs initially elaborated on the concept of emulation as a moral sentiment for overcoming collective passions that precluded cooperation. The second part shifts the focus to a discussion of education as an antidote against traditional prejudices but also as a bulwark to both modern moral hazards derived from commercial society and republicanism.

Abstract:
The fortunes and misfortunes of the Strozzi lineage in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries have recently received considerable attention from historians. This has in general been focused on two men, Filippo di Matteo Strozzi (1428-1491) and his son, Filippo di Filippo (1489-1538). The career of Filippo il vecchio as man of business and Renaissance builder has been examined in considerable detail by Richard Goldthwaite, who has characterized him as independent, determined and ambitious, and as possessing a sense of grandeur “which went beyond the bounds to which most Florentine patricians confined themselves.” He considered that Filippo's absence from the “innumerable” offices with which most men of his status in Florence occupied themselves, should perhaps be attributed to the “lordly indifference of the returned exile,” and to the realism of a pragmatist not deluded by the republican facade maintained by the Medicean regime.

Abstract:
The Mausoleum of Halikarnassos (modern Bodrum, Turkey) is one of the wonders of the ancient world, although little remains above ground to give visitors a sense of its original grandeur. While previous scholarship has studied the Mausoleum’s place within the canon of classical Greek art, this paper identifies specifically local perceptions of the monument through interviews with residents of Bodrum, exploring how different images, values and futures are projected onto the archaeological site, in conversation with both national and local discourses of the past. The responses of local inhabitants, living in an Aegean town dramatically transformed by mass tourism, urbanisation and migration, encompass being underwhelmed, pragmatically interested in the monument’s economic potential, or proud of its status, fuelled by the local discourses of “Blue Anatolianism” and “Karianism”. We argue that these influential discourses allow different heritage actors to turn the Mausoleum into a specific kind of locally rooted “heritage capital” and to negotiate a distinctive identity for the monument’s otherwise ambiguous position within the landscape of Turkish national heritage.

Abstract:
The current study aimed to analyze and compare hotel names (HNs) in Makkah, Madinah and Riyadh to find out if they differ in their linguistic and cultural features. Results of the data analysis showed that linguistically, most HNs in the three cities consist of two-word compounds. Culturally, HNs in Makkah and Madinah are loaded with meaning and reflect the country's rich past and present Islamic cultures and heritage. Most HNs in the two holy cities contain words and phrases from the Quran (Elaf, AlFurqan); notable events in Islamic history (Al-Hijra, Al-Fath); ancient Islamic place names (AlSakifa, Ohod); use of other names of Makkah and Madinah (Bakka, Umm AlQura, Taiba); and words with spiritual connotations (Alhuda, AlEman, AlEhsan). Islamic and spiritual words are even combined with names of international hotels as in Dar Al-Eman/Dar AlTaqwa/Dar AlHijra Intercontinental. The word 'Dar' which means 'house' is added to HNs to make hotel residents feel at home in the company of other Muslim visitors. In Riyadh, HNs mostly consist of single- and two-word compounds, but none of them has an Islamic or religious denotative or connotative meaning. Rather, they reflect the local mundane Saudi culture. They utilize typical Saudi eponyms (AlMutlaq, AlGhanem); toponyms (AlYamamah, AlJanaderia). Diyafa (hospitality) and Raha (Rest) impart a sense of generosity and comfort; and AlMokhmalia, Amjad, Asala, Qasr and Royal give a sense of grandeur and prestige. Global culture is reflected in retaining the names of international hotel chains such as “Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton”; or combining a local designation with the English and French descriptors such as "Plaza, Palace Tower, Royale, Crowne, Coral” as in (AlFanar Palace, AlFahd Crown; Coral AlHamra. Results of the analysis are reported in detail.

Abstract:
Indonesia is known as a developing country which industrial production has not been sustainable to the local demand. This is reflected in Indonesia's dependence on other countries in terms of consumer goods, raw and auxiliary materials as well as capital goods. Indonesia carries out import activities because most domestic products have not been able to compete with foreign products, and there is a sense of grandeur for the people when they are able to buy goods from abroad. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange reserves, exchange rates and inflation on imports in Indonesia in 2000 - 2019. The method of analysis in this study uses the Error Correction Model (ECM). The estimation results show that in the short term, the variable gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange reserves and inflation have a positive and significant effect on imports in Indonesia, while in the long run, all variables have a significant and significant effect on imports in Indonesia. In this case, the support of the government and producers by providing good quality production will greatly assist in the development of the domestic industry, so that the Indonesian people turn to domestic products again.

Abstract:
Belatedness is past its use-by date. As Susan Stephens observes at the beginning of The Poets of Alexandria, ‘all literature has some predecessor’ (1). Therefore coming after fails to define a difference. The difference on which Stephens focuses instead is the city of Alexandria: ‘the unique social and political demands of this new place’, and the creation of a literary culture that responded to those demands. This, then, is explicitly not a book about Hellenistic poetry (though the wider horizon is not ignored), but about four Alexandrian poets whose work is sufficiently non-fragmentary to be treated ‘with aesthetic coherence’ (18): Posidippus, Theocritus, Callimachus, and Apollonius. There is also an excellent and informative chapter on reception. Given these poets' diverse origins it is surprising how strong a sense of the poetry's rootedness in a specific time and place Stephens is able to give. Commendably, she approaches ‘areas of overlap’, not as ‘aesthetic differences, even literary quarrels’, but as ‘the by-product of an environment of intense experiment as these poets attempt to integrate a novel kingship into the experiences and value systems that they individually and as part of an immigrant collective strove to articulate’ (22). I'm on record as not being a great admirer of Apollonius as a narrator (though I concede that he is a very fine verbal craftsman). My lack of enthusiasm was reinforced (I assume contrary to her intention) by Stephens' discussion of the Argonautica. Consider, for example, this perfectly accurate statement: ‘Pindar's poem [Py. 4] stacks successive time-frames. Apollonius unfolds these layers so that events now occur chronologically’ (123). When the Odyssey is repackaged for children, the structure is usually unfolded so that events occur chronologically: that is not an aesthetic improvement. Stephens says that Longinus ‘grudgingly concedes the technical perfection of the Alexandrians’ (144); ‘condescendingly’ would be a better word, since Longinus ranks perfection as a second-rate excellence. More importantly, Longinian sublimity does not depend on ‘natural grandeur’, but on the greatness of an author's nature. Sublimity can be found in breathtakingly brilliant insights into a lover's experiences (Subl. 10.2–3), or in a figure (16.1–4), or in a subtle rhythmical effect (39.4): a pedestrian description of natural grandeur will not do the job. When I reviewed Stephens' edition of Callimachus' Hymns (G&R 63 [2016], 119), I expressed myself with unaccustomed enthusiasm. Her new book, written in concise but lucid prose, is a worthy successor.

Haselberger, Lothar, and Samuel Holzman. "Visualizing asperitas: Vitruvius (3.3.9) and the ‘asperity’ of Hermogenes’ pseudodipteral temple." Journal of Roman Archaeology 28 (2015): 371–91. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1047759415002536.

Full text
Abstract:
Asperitas, a key term of Hellenistic-Roman art criticism for the assessment of columnar architecture, is anchored in two passages in Vitruvius, which both point to ‘asperity’ as the decisive criterion for achieving an unparalleled, truly eye-catching visual effect. In the best known of the two passages (3.3.8–9), praise is piled on Hermogenes for having systematically established this effect in the design of temples. In fact, he is credited with the invention of the theory (ratio) of pseudodipteral temple colonnades. And this column arrangement, with ambulatories of greatly increased (double) depth around the cella, is supposed to have been invented to provide dignified grandeur (auctoritatem) in its appearance propter asperitatem intercolumniorum: 3.3.9. This visual effect came with the practical advantage that those deep pseudodipteral colonnades also provided rain-protected space for crowds to circumambulate around the temple’s cella (in aede circa cellam). Vitruvius’ other reference to asperitas, in a visual sense, appears in the context of wall-painting (7.5.5), where a certain Apaturios of Alabanda is reported to have created a deceptively dazzling effect propter asperitatem in his rendering of colonnades and temples, so much so that the visual effect of the painting outshone its deficiencies in logic (which, when pinpointed by the mathematician Likynos, the artist hastened to correct: 7.5.6–7). Here we will analyze a reconstructed 3D computer model of Hermogenes’ well-documented pseudodipteral temple at Magnesia in order to tease out the visual effect and on-site experience of that asperitas which is described by Vitruvius in such tantalizing terms.

Smith, Jamie Kathleen Miss. "Sense of Community and Neighborhood Design: A Comparative Case Study of Four Arroyo Grande Neighborhoods." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2010. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/309.

Abstract:
The relationship between the built environment and human behavior has been a topic of debate for decades, increasing significantly since the time of the industrial revolution. The latest arguments in this debate are the claims made by New Urbanists. New Urbanists claim to foster greater sense of community through the use of design. The goal of this study is to explore the relationship between the built environment and sense of community in order to identify which physical properties positively affect sense of community. This thesis not only examines the physical properties claimed to foster sense of community but the social variables that literature has found to also affect sense of community among residents. Built upon the earlier findings of Glynn (1981), McMillan and Chavis (1986), Nasar and Julian (1995), Talen (1999) and Lund (2002), this study examined residents of four residential developments in the City of Arroyo Grande who were surveyed on their perceived sense of community. The residential developments The Village and Berry Gardens were selected as developments containing New Urbanist design elements. Rancho Grande and Oak Park Leisure Gardens were selected as traditional suburban developments. The results of this study found two key findings. The Village and Berry Gardens, while containing similar spatial variables, found a noticeable difference in sense of community scores. Residents of The Village felt that their needs and wants were met, that they were active, satisfied members of their neighborhood, and shared an emotional connection with their fellow neighbors. Residents of Berry Gardens were overall less satisfied, less fulfilled, less active and shared less of an emotional connection with their fellow neighbors than all other developments. And while Rancho Grande and Oak Park Leisure Gardens contained noticeably distinct spatial variables, strikingly similar sense of community scores were found. Although Rancho Grande had a density of 2.5 dwelling units per acre and large setbacks its residents felt they could influence one another and belonged in the neighborhood to the same degree as residents of Oak Park Leisure Gardens with 9 dwelling units an acre and shallow setbacks. Based on the four sense of community indicators used (membership, integration and fulfillment of needs, influence, and shared emotional connection) the results show a lack of relationship between the spatial variables found in each residential development and the sense of community its residents have. The social variables, education, gender, age, and homogeneity, can account for the range of sense of community scores among physically similar developments as well as physically different. This implies that the built environment plays the role of a medium in which all factors influencing sense of community are stimulated rather than determining sense of community.

Abstract:
The present research is interested in the role and relevance of the monthly magazine piauí, released in the year 2006, apparently taking the opposite direction when compared to the mainstream journalism current tendency: shorter texts and instant newsflashes. The related magazine draws back to the tradition of long stories, the so called long-form reporting, privileging the narrative, its characters and, why not say, the journalist\'s individual talent instead of focusing on the technique and on producing a more concise text. Thus, piauí demands from the reader another perception and another background. It also sets on him another disposition to learn the information present on its narratives, implying a longer period of time to its reading and assimilation. But there is still another matter to be raised about the magazine: apart from other informative magazines, piauí is not guided by the intent of explaining, analyzing and interpreting the \"big social issues\" related the agenda-setting. It develops its sense-making and its mediation through characters, well told life stories, curiosity, character types (and typical) - besides being driven towards a well-humored and, sometimes, even ironic text. It usually presents unexpected perspectives on a given fact, besides providing its readers with different ways of acquiring information or gaining knowledge. In this sense, we understand the inclusion of tales, poems, comics and other openly fictional texts (although, in a funny way, some of them try to seem \"factual\") published by the magazine right by the side of profiles, long stories and some unusual news. That is why we find that piauí can be identified to three other media publications: the Brazilian Senhor (Sir) (1959-1964), Realidade (Reality) (1966-1976) and the American The New Yorker (founded in 1925), which will also be analyzed and contrasted against each other on this research. We have drawn the first 24 editions of piauí as our field of study in the development - its first two years of existence, considering such period as just the right amount of time necessary for a new publication to be established (or not), to relate to a reading audience and to establish and consolidate its editorial criteria. We analyze the main sections of the magazine and its long stories in the search for its sense-making process. The magazine is not taken here as an opinion maker, but mainly as an information provider to a specific sector of society.

Abstract:
Aims: This study investigated the association between Sense of Coherence (SOC) and toothache. To our knowledge, this study is the first to examine this relationship. We hypothesized that toothache prevalence in the previous six months would be lower in adolescents with strong SOC than those with weaker SOC. Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was carried out in 36 municipalities comprising up to 50,000 residents in southern Brazil. The target population was student adolescents from 15–19 years old. The sample consisted of 1,150 adolescents chosen by systematic sampling. From those, 68.8% were up to 16 years, 57.2% were female, and 71.5% were white. The final adjusted analysis by Poisson regression included 1,065 individuals. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, SOC-13 scale and the DMFT index. Results: The SOC mean was 45, minimum 27, maximum 60, standard deviance was 5. A strong SOC was a significant protective factor for toothache; PR=0.65 (95%CI= 0.55–0.75). Girls presented more toothache than boys PR=1.39 (95%CI= 1.15–1.68). Individuals who saw the dentist for reasons other than reviews or check-ups had a toothache prevalence 85% higher than their counterparts (95%CI= 1.47–2.34). Adolescents with tooth decay reported up to two times more toothache than those without cavities. Of the adolescents in the sample, 29.8% reported experiencing toothache in the previous six months. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that strong SOC protected against toothache. A salutogenic approach may lead to better patterns of health.

Abstract:
The thesis is conceived as an analysis of some essential themes of the literature in Jules Renard's works: the country and the peasants, the child, woman and love, life and death. The introduction contains a short presentation of the literary epoch and the writer, the reasons for the choice of these themes and the method of research. There are four chapters for each of the themes contained with the title: "Jules Renard or the life of a tree. The author of the thesis chose this image for clearly illustrate Jules Renard's life and literary work. Therefore the chapters have titles from nature: roots, growth of the three, flowers and fruits, lively and menaced tree. The chapter "roots" presents the theme of the country and the peasants in Jules Renard's rustic novels and in his diary. The second chapter "growth of the tree" presents the childhood based on the novel "Poil de carotte" and on the notes of the diary. "Flowers and fruits" contains an analysis of the love and the women in Renard's life and works. The ideal woman appears in Renard's dreams but he needs also the woman of his days, the wife. They are the flowers. The fruits are the temptation of the dream and the marital love. The analysis is based upon Renard's theatre, on his novels and on the diary. The last chapter is an analysis of the themes life and death in Jules Renard's diary. The author of the thesis presents the writer's life double character: a strong desire to live and to be active, and the obsession of the death, the fears and the sickness. The conclusions provide emphasis on the literary value of Jules Renard's works, on the modern aspects and his particular realism

Abstract:
In 1831, the French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the heart of the United States of America in order to shed light upon the future of democracy. Before starting out on this adventure, he was already certain that social equality was inevitable. Even though, in his young eyes, the progression of the democratic social state was a “providential fact”, he became worried when he realized that there was a certain ambivalence concerning the political direction that the movement was taking. A democratic social state does not necessary lead to a liberal movement; its opposite, despotism, must seriously be taken into consideration. As such, America became his choice destination for observing all the democratic potential it had to offer, leading him to write his masterpiece Democracy in America (1835-1840), in which he shares his discoveries. Social equality opens an immense breadth of possibilities for human growth, but, at the same time, also presents a risk of dehumanization. In order to get the best out of democracy, humankind must avoid falling into apathy towards politics. Giving up one’s political responsibility is like abdicating one’s freedom and, as such, all hope for greatness. In his work, Tocqueville provides a true explanation of democracy, with all of its most secret orientations. He also provides measures that counterweight this nature, allowing for the fragile equilibrium to be maintained. In this manner, Tocqueville presents himself as the defender of human freedom and dignity, which he believes to be truly threatened. Does social equality allow for human greatness? If so, what conditions are required to deploy such greatness? Nearly two centuries later, are Tocqueville’s words still pertinent? In light of Tocqueville’s thoughts, which were fed by his discoveries on American soil, this dissertation attempts to demonstrate that democracy and human greatness are not incompatible.

This study deals with the interaction between the residents of the neighborhood of José Pinheiro and the military police officers engaged in the "Solidary Police" program in the same neighborhood, in the city of Campina Grande, and the influence of such interaction on the residents' sense of safety. Therefore, starting from the key concepts of community policing proposed by Skolnick, Bayley (2002) and Trojanowicz, Bucqueroux (1999), which can be summarized in "reorientation of patrol activities", "decentralization of command", "supervision of police activities "and" prevention of crime"developed with a view to bring military police and residents closer together, as well as improving their sense of security. On this, the perception of both the inhabitants and the military police on these subjects was analyzed from a qualitative perspective through ethnographic incursions, interviews, informal conversations and participant and non-participant observation, so that, at the end, to describe and analyze how the relationship between residents and military police in the neighborhood was. The results indicated that although there is a physical structure that mentions the "Solidary Police" program in the neighborhood, which is the Solidarity Police Unit of the José Pinheiro Neighborhood, the policing actions developed in the neighborhood corresponded to the preventive and repressive facets of traditional policing rather than community policing, so there was no consensual rapprochement between the military police and neighborhood residents, which interfered with the improvement of the security feeling of the last ones. In summary, patrolling could be said to be mobile and random, covering an extensive territorial area; as well as, the indicated Solidarity Police Unit was still acting according to a centralized model of planning and execution of police activities; and also that supervision of police activities and possible accountability of military police officers were precarious and inefficient; Finally, it was concluded that crime prevention followed the logic of traditional policing philosophy through mobile patrolling, as well as sporadic approaches and personal searches. Because of the insufficient police action and the massive presence of criminal activities, the residents of the neighborhood used the supernatural element "God" and "Jesus" as a form of protection, which evidenced the State's inefficiency in promoting adequate public security policies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sicily’s coasts are studded with fortifications, a few which are still intact and serve as a testimony of the island’s thousand year old history. Their original function of defence and control was closely linked to aspects of formality and strategic positioning in the Mediterranean. For this reason, they once constituted strong holds on the territory and represented important elements of symbolic connotations. They have been transformed through the centuries, by man’s actions as well as natural occurrences, and have therefore lost their original significance. Regardless of this fact, they are still capable of giving a strong sense of identity to the topos and of recognition to the collective imagination. The fortifications’ emerging masses seem tightly linked to the cliff and the sweeping expanse of the sea which have the duty, still today, of evoking the identifying character of the area. The grandeur of the fortified walls speaks to the vastness of the sea and the depths of the abysses. The material and chromatic aspects of the stones, in contrast with the transparency of the water, tend to melt, taking on qualities of agility and sculptural composition. These aspects take on an identity of their own to the point of affecting the surfaces of the walls, highlighting the more rugged and uneven edges while softening those that are smoother. The three castles of Syracuse, Catania, and Aci are clear examples of unique systems that are environmentally integrated and interrelated with each other because of their peculiarity.
