Johansson, Elisabeth. "Understanding Solution Quality." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Logistik- och kvalitetsutveckling, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-128274.

Full text
Abstract:
The integration of services and products into solutions can open up new business opportunities for firms. This thesis concerns how firms can provide solutions that are perceived as high quality. Solutions are often provided over several years, which implies a changed customer relationship compared to product provisions. Since the solution aims to support the customer’s activities, firms face new challenges when introducing solutions. One challenge is to integrate all components and activities of the solution, and simultaneously support the customer’s activities. In addition, the firm must ensure that the solution and all of its parts are of high quality. Most of the existing research on quality is related to the management of a firm’s internal activities and the interaction during exchange. Within the research on quality, customer orientation means that a firm should manage the relevant product or service to meet customer requirements. When this is achieved, the product or service is of high quality. Since solutions are seen as services and products that are integrated as an outcome, as well as a customer relational process that aims to support the customer’s activities, firms have little to learn from previous research about the quality of solutions. The aim of this thesis is to increase knowledge about how to manage solution quality. The thesis combines insights from research on quality with research on solutions and servitization. Three research questions are answered. The first question concerns the content of solution quality; the second deals with how firms can, with support from interventions, meet the new challenges that arise from solution provision; and the third question concerns how customers can be involved to achieve solution quality. The research questions are answered through five papers based on literature studies and empirical data. The papers contribute to an increased knowledge of solution quality and how firms can work to achieve it. The results of the thesis suggest that solution quality is built on seven quality dimensions: reliability, communicability, internal consistency, empathy, approachability, tangibility, and adaptability. In addition, knowledge of processes and customer relationships are two prerequisites for the concept. These dimensions and prerequisites are supported by interventions that can provide a change. However, it has become evident that whatever intervention is used must be related to the dimensions that are supposed to be improved. Furthermore, customer involvement is argued to be an intervention to support the prerequisites for solution quality, especially during the solution  development. The results of this thesis extend the research on quality by increasing the knowledge of the solution quality concept and by changing the view of customers and their involvement during solution development.<br>Den här avhandlingen berör hur företag kan möjliggöra så att produkter och  tjänster, integrerade i så kallade helhetslösningar, kan levereras med hög kvalitet.

Silvester, Debbie Sue. "Electrochemical studies in room temperature ionic liquids." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2008. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:be9e6269-f19a-48de-96e3-41c0c7143d6a.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis involves the application of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as solvents for use in electrochemical experiments. Initially, the fundamentals of electrochemistry is presented, followed by a comprehensive overview of RTILs in terms of their properties, applications and their behaviour as electrochemical solvents compared to conventional aprotic solvents. The results of 8 original studies are then presented as follows: X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to quantify the concentration of bromide ions in an ionic liquid, and is independently confirmed by potential-step chronoamperometry. The reaction mechanisms and kinetics for the electrochemical reduction of some aromatic nitro compounds (namely nitrobenzene and 4-nitrophenol) are determined. The electrochemistry of phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus oxychloride is studied in detail for the first time, due to the unusual stability of these highly reactive compounds in RTILs. The reductions and oxidations of sodium and potassium nitrate are studied, giving rise to 'melt'-like behaviour. The electrodeposition of sodium oxide on platinum is also demonstrated. The electrochemical oxidation of nitrite and the oxidation and reduction of the toxic gas, nitrogen dioxide, is presented. The oxidation of hydrogen gas is studied in ten RTILs with a range of different cations and anions, and contrasting interactions with the RTIL anions are seen. The electrochemical oxidation of ammonia gas is studied in five RTILs with different anions and a general reaction mechanism is suggested. The reduction of benzoic acid is studied in six RTILs, and the kinetics of the dissociation step are found to be very fast. The first five studies are all carried out in one particular ionic liquid, and the reactions and mechanisms are compared to that observed in conventional aprotic solvents. The last three studies employ several RTILs with different cations and anions to look at the contrasting interaction of protons with the RTIL cation/anion and ultimately help to understand the pH properties of the solvent. The overall findings from the work in this thesis are that some reactions and mechanisms (e.g bromide, nitro derivatives and ammonia) are generally the same in RTILs as in conventional aprotic solvents, but other species (e.g. nitrates, phosphorus derivatives) show remarkably different behaviour. It has also been demonstrated that RTILs are suitable media for the detection of nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen and ammonia gases. This suggests that RTILs could potentially offer many advantages when employed as solvents in electrochemical reactions and in amperometric gas sensors.

Merkley, Keith E. "Enthalpies of Solution of CO2 in Aqueous Methyldiethanolamine Solutions." BYU ScholarsArchive, 1987. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6522.

Full text
Abstract:
The enthalpies of solution, HS, of carbon dioxide in aqueous methyldiethanolamine were measured with an isothermal flow calorimeter over wide ranges of temperature, pressure, weight percent MDEA, and loading (gmole CO2/gmole MDEA). The values of HS (kJ/gmole CO2) were found to be constant up to the saturation concentration of CO2 in the aqueous solution. In addition, experimental data showed that HS was independent of the total pressure over the solution, but linearly dependent upon both temperature and weight percent MDEA as was given by a correlation. A computer program based upon basic thermodynamic quantities was developed to model HS of CO2 in MDEA solutions. The values of K and ΔH for each of the chemical reactions (except the MDEA protonation reaction) were fitted values from the literature. Activity coefficient correlations used in the program were also obtained from the literature. Using these data, the program was first used to find the values of K and ΔH for the MDEA protonation reaction which gave the minimum error between the model and the experimental data. Finally, the values of HS predicted by the program were compared to the experimental data and the differences were discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis describes a systematic investigation of the thermodynamic quantities associated with the interaction between Cu2+ and SO42- in aqueous solution. A variety of techniques including UV-Visible spectrophotometry, Cu(II) ion-selective electrode potentiometry, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and titration calorimetry have been used. The values for the (aq) association constants determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry in NaClO4 media as a function of ionic strength were in good agreement with published data but were lower than the values obtained from Cu(II) ion -selective electrode potentiometry. The source of this difference was traced to the presence of solvent-separated ion pairs which are only partially detected by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. This was shown by a detailed investigation of CuSO4(aq) over a wide range of concentrations using modern broad-band dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). This technique revealed the presence of three ion-pair types: double solvent-separated, solvent-shared and contact ion pairs. Calorimetric titrations using the log KA values determined by potentiometry, have provided for the first time reliable values for the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with complex formation between Cu2+(aq) and SO42-(aq) system over range of ionic strengths (in NaClO4 media). These data were fitted to a specific ion interaction model to obtain the standard state value which was in excellent agreement with the values obtained in other studies and from the DRS work in this study. In addition, investigations have been carried out into the physicochemical properties, (osmotic coefficients, densities, heat capacities, solubilities and viscosities) of ternary mixtures of CuSO4(aq) with Na2SO4(aq) or MgSO4(aq). The isopiestic measurements (water activities) of the mixtures were in general well described by Zdanovskii's rule, especially for the mixtures of CuSO4 with MgSO4. The densities of the ternary mixtures of CuSO4 with MgSO4 were found to follow Young's rule of mixing but those of CuSO4 with Na2SO4 deviated from linearity. The solubilities of the salts in their ternary mixtures agree well with literature data and show that the solubility of MgSO4 or CuSO4 decreases with increasing Na2SO4 concentration. The viscosities of all the ternary mixtures show clear negative departures from 'Young's rule' type behaviour.

Ploetz, Elizabeth Anne. "Fluctuation solution theory." Diss., Kansas State University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/18390.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy<br>Department of Chemistry<br>Paul E. Smith<br>The Kirkwood-Buff (KB) theory of solutions, published in 1951, established a route from integrals over radial (pair) distribution functions (RDFs) in the grand canonical ensemble to a set of thermodynamic quantities in an equivalent closed ensemble. These “KB integrals” (KBIs) can also be expressed in terms of the particle-particle (i.e., concentration or density) fluctuations within grand canonical ensemble regions. Contributions by Ben-Naim in 1977 provided the means to obtain the KBIs if one already knew the set of thermodynamic quantities for the mixture of interest; that is, he provided the inversion procedure. Thus, KB theory provides a two-way bridge between local (microscopic) and global (bulk/thermodynamic) properties. Due to its lack of approximations, its wide ranging applicability, and the absence of a competitive theory for rigorously understanding liquid mixtures, it has been used to understand solution microheterogeneity, solute solubility, cosolvent effects on biomolecules, preferential solvation, etc. Here, after using KB theory to test the accuracy of pair potentials, we present and illustrate two extensions of the theory, resulting in a general Fluctuation Solution Theory (FST). First, we generalize KB theory to include two-way relationships between the grand canonical ensemble’s particle-energy and energy-energy fluctuations and additional thermodynamic quantities. This extension allows for non-isothermal conditions to be considered, unlike traditional KB theory. We illustrate these new relationships using analyses of experimental data and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for pure liquids and binary mixtures. Furthermore, we use it to obtain conformation-specific infinitely dilute partial molar volumes and compressibilities for proteins (other properties will follow) from MD simulations and compare the method to a non-FST method for obtaining the same properties. The second extension of KB theory involves moving beyond doublet particle fluctuations to additionally consider triplet and quadruplet particle fluctuations, which are related to derivatives of the thermodynamic properties involved in regular KB theory. We present these higher order fluctuations obtained from experiment and simulation for pure liquids and binary mixtures. Using the newfound experimental third and fourth cumulants of the distribution of particles in solution, which can be extracted from bulk thermodynamic data using this extension, we also probe particle distributions’ non-Gaussian nature.

Abstract:
We investigate the use of the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) for the numerical solution of elliptic problems arising in engineering. In particular, we examine harmonic and biharmonic problems with boundary singularities, certain steady-state free boundary flow problems and inhomogeneous problems. The MFS can be viewed as an indirect boundary method with an auxiliary boundary. The solution is approximated by a linear combination of fundamental solutions of the governing equation which are expressed in terms of sources located outside the domain of the problem. The unknown coefficients in the linear combination of fundamental solutions and the location of the sources are determined so that the boundary conditions are satisfied in a least squares sense. The MFS shares the same advantages of the boundary methods over domain discretisation methods. Moreover, it is relatively easy to implement, it is adaptive in the sense that it takes into account sharp changes in the solution and/or in the geometry of the domain and it can easily incorporate complicated boundary conditions.

This has proved to be a boon to callers who can reach the other party directly via the Internet. Unfortunately numerous business persons still need to call to and from mobile phones which are currently a domain where the customers are generally tightly bound to their operators. To provide a simple solution to this problem for companies, Opticall AB has designed an integrated system called the Dial over Data solution, coupling a mobile interface with a low-rate communication channel, which allows calls to be originated remotely at the best price, exploiting the customer company's existing network. This scheme allows the customer company to easily control telecommunications costs, to monitor their employees' efficiency, and more generally speaking to claim a central role in the communications of their employees. The proposed solution allows distant callers (usually employees of the customer company) to benefit from the company's internal network, which is usually more cost effective and offering connectivity to more networks than a cell phone. The Dial over Data solution enables communication between any phone accessible from the customer company's telephony network (such as SIP clients, landline phones, and mobile phones) at a lower cost.&lt;/p&gt; This thesis project analyzes existing technologies and compares them to the pre-existing prototype to ascertain the validity of the method and of the components used. This project also explains the improvements brought to the features offered by the DoD solution: the initial prototype has been developed into a stable and functional product, and has been tested internally. Prompted by a need for scalability and additional features, the replacement of Asterisk for the handling of SIP calls by other SIP servers has also been considered and tested.<br>Den nuvarande ökningen av datanätverk har lett till adoptionen av Internetbaserade lösningar för att förminskar kostnader inom telefoni.

Abstract:
Computer networks are continuously evolving and growing in size and complexity. New technologies are being introduced which further increases the complexity. Net- work Service Orchestration is all about pushing configuration out into the network devices automatically without human intervention. There can be issues that causes the orchestration to fail. In many cases manual operations must be done to recover from the error which is very contradicting since the goal of orchestration is that it should be fully automated. There is some indication that the errors that are being solved manually could be de- tected and handled by a feedback mechanism. This thesis work aimed to build on current insight and if possible, verify that the feedback mechanism is a viable method. After consideration on different ways to solve the research question, the choice fell on creating a test environment where the approach was tested. The test environment was used to investigate if a network orchestration system could be integrated with a feedback mechanism. The result of this project presents a way to automatically de- tect a network failure and send feedback to a Network Service Orchestrator. The or- chestrator is then able to identify and correct the error.<br>Datornätverk utvecklas kontinuerligt och växer i storlek och komplexitet.

Abstract:
Master of Landscape Architecture<br>Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning<br>Tim Keane<br>Wildcat Creek in Riley County, KS has repeatedly flooded in the past 5 years causing significant damage to the watershed, private property, and community livelihood. Strategically placing wetlands throughout the watershed can help reduce stormwater runoff, increase infiltration, and increase wildlife habitat. A watershed assessment was completed to determine the best location for wetlands in the Wildcat Creek Basin. Two watershed-scale plans for wetlands were derived and evaluated based upon estimation of stormwater runoff and quality of wildlife habitat. Wetlands were then examined and incorporated into existing land cover and land uses at the site-scale for an existing golf course. Three proposals for the nine hole course (for best golf experience, wildlife habitat, and wetland creation) were developed to reflect expansion options from a Par 30 to a Par 34 or 35 course. Each proposal was evaluated based on wetland capacity from estimated stormwater runoff, quality of wildlife habitat, playability of the golf course for all skill levels, and cost of implementation. After this evaluation, the wetland proposal was moved forward and further developed into a proposal that is best suited for the site. Following wetland implementation, stormwater runoff can be collected on-site to prevent runoff and flooding at the golf course and downstream. In order to solve flooding problems in the Wildcat Creek watershed, a series of wetlands can be implemented at the smaller site scale, like the Wildcat Creek Golf Course site, throughout the watershed. Wetlands are one component of a larger stormwater management system that is needed to reduce flooding of the Wildcat Creek and the flood-prone area of Manhattan, KS.

Curtin University of Technology, School of Applied Chemistry, 1997. http://espace.library.curtin.edu.au:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=11442.

Abstract:
Over the last 100 Years, the cyanidation process has been the most popular method for recovering gold from its ores. Despite this, there are still efforts to improve the efficiency of the process, particularly as ores become more difficult to treat. Many investigators have studied the cyanidation process, although a large proportion of these studies have obtained contradictory results. This thesis presents a kinetic and electrochemical study of the leaching of gold in cyanide solutions, and emphasis is placed on rationalising the conflicting results which have been published in the past. The leaching rate of gold was measured using a rotating electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, an instrument which allows the simultaneous measurement of electrochemical data and mass changes at the solid-solution interface in real time. A proportion of this project was devoted to the on-going design of this instrument, and a number of modifications are discussed in detail. Initially, the leaching of gold in cyanide solutions was investigated under conditions of high purity. Under these conditions, it was found that the gold surface is blocked by a passive film, presumably AuCN. The presence of such a film results in the reaction being chemically controlled, and under typical cyanidation conditions (4 mM cyanide, pH 10.0), the rate of dissolution is very low. These kinetic results were supported by complimentary electrochemical studies, which showed that gold is passive in the potential region where cyanidation occurs. The second part of this thesis presents a study of the effect of system purity on the leaching of gold in cyanide solutions. Solution phase purity was investigated by adding controlled amounts of lead or silver to the leach solutions. It was found that in the presence of low concentrations of lead, the dissolution of gold in 20 mM cyanide solutions was oxygen ++<br>diffusion controlled (as compared to chemical control for gold in the absence of lead). However, high concentrations of lead were found to be detrimental to the leaching process. It is believed that the role of lead is to modify the surface by cementation, hence reducing the effect of the passive film. Silver was also found to be effective at reducing passivation, and the role of silver believed to be similar to that of lead. It was found that unlike lead, high concentrations of silver are not detrimental to the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions.Solid phase purity was also found to be important in the leaching of gold, and it was found that the leaching of a gold sample which contains 1 % silver is diffusion controlled. This finding is important from an industrial viewpoint, as most native gold contains some silver. Consequently, attempts were made to rationalise the leaching of gold/silver with current plant practice. Discussion on the effect of cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature and lead addition is presented.

Abstract:
<p>The aim of this thesis was to investigate amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solution. The work was divided into two parts. In the first part the effects of different counterions on phase behavior was investigated, while the second part concerns the 1-monooleoyl-rac-glycerol (MO)/n-octyl-β-D-glucoside (OG)/2H2O-system. </p><p>The effects of mixing monovalent and divalent counterions were studied for two surfactant systems, sodium/calcium octyl sulfate, and piperidine/piperazine octanesulfonate. It was found that mixing monovalent and divalent counterions resulted in a large decrease in cmc already at very low fractions of the divalent counterion. Moreover, the degree of counterion binding for piperidine in the piperidine/piperazine octanesulfonate system was much higher than predicted, probably due to the larger hydrophobic moiety of piperidine.</p><p>The effects of hydrophobic counterions were studied for eight alkylpyridinium octanesulfonates (APOS). The results were discussed in terms of packing constraints. The anomalous behavior of the 2H2O quadrupolar splittings in the lamellar phases was explained by the presence of two or more binding sites at the lamellae surface. </p><p>The MO/OG/water system was studied in general and the MO-rich cubic phases in particular. When mixing MO and OG it was found that OG-rich structures (micelles, hexagonal and cubic phase of space group Ia3d) could solubilize quite large amounts of MO, while the MO-rich cubic structures where considerable less tolerant towards the addition of OG. The micelles in the OG-rich L1 phase were found to remain rather small and discrete in the larger part of the L1 phase area, but at low water concentration and high MO content a bicontinuous structure was indicated. Only small fractions of OG was necessary to convert the MO-rich cubic Pn3m structure to an Ia3d structure, and upon further addition of OG a lamellar (La) phase formed. Since the larger part of the phase diagram contains a lamellar structure (present either as a single La phase or as a dispersion of lamellar particles together with other phases), the conclusion was that introducing OG in the MO structures, forces the MO bilayer to become more flat. Upon heating the cubic phases, structures with more negative curvature were formed. The transformation between the cubic structures required very little energy, and this resulted in the appearance of additional peaks in the diffractograms.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
As is the way with books in general this document is presented in the form of chapters (seven in number) devoted to individual topics relating to the overall topic of Gaia astrometric data processing. We progress logically from the satellite to the equations for the astrometry to the implementation of a software system to process Gaia observations. After this we look at a few key astrophysical issues for Gaia and explain tests which have been carried out, using the implementation, concerning these effects. A few appendices provide additional information. Here an overview paragraph is provided for each of the chapters: This introductory chapter Section 1 provides an overview of the work as well as an overview of the satellite hardware for the reader unfamiliar with Gaia. In Section 2 the equations underpinning the astrometric solution are explained and developed toward the algorithms actually coded in the system. Section 3 provides details of the Java software framework which hosts the equations previously described. The framework itself has been tuned to effectively process Gaia observations and is the main original content of the thesis. This system is known as the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution or AGIS. Having looked at the implementation, a few of the astrophysical effects and design decisions which influence the solution are described in Section 4. Although no data has yet been received from Gaia, extensive simulations have been performed in the Gaia community. Some of the AGIS tests relating to the astrophysical phenomena described in Section 4 are reported in Section 5. In this manner a demonstration of the effectiveness of AGIS is presented. A discussion and overview of the development approach adopted for A GIS is presented in Section 6. The eXtreme programming approach is particularly suited to science development and worked well for this project in the form presented. Brief conclusions are drawn in Section 7. Appendix A provides a primer on Quaternions which are used for attitude modelling. A complete list of the mind boggling acronyms used in this document appears in Appendix B. Finally some published papers are included in Appendix C.<br>Esta tesis presenta el marco numérico y computacional para la solución astrométrica Gaia. Thomson, Ross. "Solution structure of hMBD1 CXXC1." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2714/.

Full text
Abstract:
Methylation of CpG dinucleotides is the major epigenetic modification of mammalian DNA which results in the remodelling of transcriptionally active euchromatin to transcriptionally inactive heterochromatin. Recognition of methylated CpG by methylated DNA binding proteins, the MBD family, the Kaiso zinc finger family and the SRA domain proteins results in deacetylation and methylation of histone side chains through the recruitment of HDAC and HMT enzymes. Methylation of DNA is a heritable process ensuring Methylation dependant transcriptional repression is passed from mother to daughter cell during replication. Some of the proteins involved in this chromatin remodelling, MBD1, DNMT1, MLL, and CFP1 contain CXXC domains. hMBD1 contains 2 or 3 CXXC domains depending on the splice variant, with only the third CXXC domain shown to bind CpG dinucleotides. This thesis describes the work done to elucidate the structure of hMBD1 CXXC1 and to investigate hMBD1 CXXC12 di-domain by NMR spectroscopy and biochemical characterisation. The hMBD1 CXXC1 & CXXC12 domains were successfully over expressed in E. coli and purified. Unlabelled and uniformly 15N labelled proteins were produced for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies. Assignment of NMR spectra was carried out and constraints generated enabling structure determination of hMBD1 CXXC1 and to investigate the relationship between CXXC1 and CXXC2 of hMBD1. The solution structure of hMBD1 CXXC1 determined here was compared to the previously determined solution structure of hMLL CXXC in order to investigate their differences in DNA binding. NOE data from hMBD1 CXXC1 and CXXC12 are compared in order to investigate the domain structure of CXXC12. DNA titration of hMBD1 CXXC1 showed no significant interaction with a single CpG oligo while the loop region of hMBD1 CXXC1 differs significant in both structure and surface charge suggesting the loop region to be important for DNA binding. The recorded NOE data of hMBD CXXC12 suggests the two CXXC domains form a globular rather than a linear structure

Abstract:
Non-covalent interactions taking place in solution are essential in chemical and biological systems. The solvent environment plays an important role in determining the geometry and stability of interactions. This thesis examines aromatic stacking interactions, alkyl-alkyl interactions, edge-to-face aromatic interactions, halogen bonds and hydrogen…hydrogen interactions in solution. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the different classes of non-covalent interactions, in addition to the state-of-the-art models and methods for investigating these weak interactions. The chapter finishes with a focus on dispersion interaction in alkanes and arenes. Chapter 2 investigates dispersion interactions between stacked aromatics in solution using a new class of complexes and thermodynamic double mutant cycles (DMCs). In extended aromatics, dispersion was detected as providing a small but significant contribution to the overall stacking free energies. Chapter 3 concerns the experimental measurement of alkyl-alkyl dispersion interactions in a wide range of solvents using Wilcox torsion balances. The contribution of dispersion interactions to alkyl-alkyl association was shown to be very small, with DMC, QSPR method and Hunter's solvation model. Chapter 4 studies edge-to-face aromatic interactions in series of solvents. In the open system, edge-to-face aromatic interactions were found to be sensitive to the solvent environment. The solvent effects were complicated and cannot be rationalised by a single parameter. Further analysis is needed. Chapter 5 describes a preliminary approach to investigate organic halogen…π interactions in solution using supramolecular complexes and torsion balances. Chapter 6 is a preliminary investigation of the ability of hydrogen atoms to act as H bond acceptors in silane compounds. Computations and 1H NMR demonstrated a weak interaction between silane and perfluoro-tert-butanol.

Abstract:
This document is a project document based on finding a more economical way to use buttermilk at Synlait Milk Ltd. Buttermilk is a by-product from the Anhydrous Milk Fat (AMF), which is the concentration of cream. It is a problem for many dairy companies in New Zealand, including Synlait. the problems arise due to the opportunity cost of using it. It is a low value product, but made in substantial quantities at a ratio of 55% buttermilk to 45% AMF. This feasibility study contains an analysis on buttermilk at Synlait, including opportunity costs and benefits with processing buttermilk into buttermilk powder. It provides insight into the feasibility of implementing a ‘washed cream’ process at Synlait which would provide an alternative method for using buttermilk. The feasibility of separating buttermilk components for separate use is also examined. Overall, this project provides a more economical solution for buttermilk use at Synlait Milk Ltd.

Smith, Edmund. "Parallel solution of linear programs." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8833.

Full text
Abstract:
The factors limiting the performance of computer software periodically undergo sudden shifts, resulting from technological progress, and these shifts can have profound implications for the design of high performance codes. At the present time, the speed with which hardware can execute a single stream of instructions has reached a plateau. It is now the number of instruction streams that may be executed concurrently which underpins estimates of compute power, and with this change, a critical limitation on the performance of software has come to be the degree to which it can be parallelised. The research in this thesis is concerned with the means by which codes for linear programming may be adapted to this new hardware. For the most part, it is codes implementing the simplex method which will be discussed, though these have typically lower performance for single solves than those implementing interior point methods. However, the ability of the simplex method to rapidly re-solve a problem makes it at present indispensable as a subroutine for mixed integer programming. The long history of the simplex method as a practical technique, with applications in many industries and government, has led to such codes reaching a great level of sophistication. It would be unexpected in a research project such as this one to match the performance of top commercial codes with many years of development behind them. The simplex codes described in this thesis are, however, able to solve real problems of small to moderate size, rather than being confined to random or otherwise artificially generated instances. The remainder of this thesis is structured as follows. The rest of this chapter gives a brief overview of the essential elements of modern parallel hardware and of the linear programming problem. Both the simplex method and interior point methods are discussed, along with some of the key algorithmic enhancements required for such systems to solve real-world problems. Some background on the parallelisation of both types of code is given. The next chapter describes two standard simplex codes designed to exploit the current generation of hardware. i6 is a parallel standard simplex solver capable of being applied to a range of real problems, and showing exceptional performance for dense, square programs. i8 is also a parallel, standard simplex solver, but now implemented for graphics processing units (GPUs).

Therefore, this project accomplishes three goals: it explores the rhetorical function of comics; second, it justifies the inclusion of comics in an undergraduate rhetoric-composition program; and, third, it provides a master syllabus for four classes that would provide the experience necessary to students wishing to study visual, verbal, and visual-verbal rhetorics.<br>Department of English

Abstract:
Approved for public release, distribution unlimited.<br>In today's world of integrating voice, video and data into a single network, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks have become prevalent in the Department of Defense. The Department of Defense's critical data will have to pass through public networks, which causes concern for security. This study presents an efficient solution aimed at authenticating communications over public ATM networks. The authenticating device, Stargate, utilizes a high speed, low level authentication protocol that offers the low cost, flexibility, and extensibility of software, while still capable of yielding performance comparable to hardware based authentication.

Agena, Sabine Martina. "Modelling of protein solution properties." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1997. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317807/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research pursued in this work concentrates on modelling two protein solution properties: activity coefficients and solubility. While modelling protein solubility was the prime objective activity coefficients were considered first as deviation from ideal solution behaviour was expected to occur for protein containing systems. Activity coefficients of protein related compounds, amino acids and peptides, were studied first hypothesising that these compounds represent proteins and because activity coefficient data is documented for those compounds but not for proteins. The predictive UNIFAC model was studied but failed, which led to examination of the related UNIQUAC model. The objective of the work was the creation of a model base, which was achieved. This model base was then utilised for protein containing systems. Protein activity coefficient data was made available and could be successfully modelled using the established framework. Furthermore, the activity coefficient data was examined over different pH and temperature ranges, salt types and concentrations. A qualitative comparison of the data to protein solubility results of other researchers was pursued and used to confirm the model approach. Having demonstrated that protein solubility was qualitatively represented through protein activity coefficients a quantitative solubility approach was addressed next. For two protein systems the solubility behaviour was modelled successfully as a function of salt concentration and temperature. Findings of other researchers were integrated into the discussion of the model results while also the calculated protein activity coefficients were examined and a qualitative confirmation of the model was achieved. The models used in this study for the description of two protein solution properties, when applied to six different proteins over various pH and temperature ranges, salt types and concentrations showed qualitative and quantitative success. They should find application to many other protein systems.
