Abstract:
Twenty years ago a unique figure in the history of our country returned dramatically to the world of the "drowned", one of the spectral "saved" who had found the strength to testify the dramas of the twentieth century: Primo Levi. On the twentieth anniversary of his death, Firenze University Press has decided to revive his lesson with a tribute that is not intended as a celebration, but rather as a pause for refection in which we can listen again to the words of this great writer, dissected and scrutinised the world over, generating germs of memory hopefully as universal as the mathematical and geometrical signs and the chemical formulas he so loved. Voci dal mondo per Primo Levi. In memoria, per la memoria edited by Luigi Dei, a lecturer in physical chemistry at the University of Florence, consists of fifteen short essays contributed by a polyhedric group of writers from various parts of the world and of different educational and professional backgrounds. Abstract:
The book is the revised version of two lectures presented, in the spring 2017, as the Spinoza lectures in the University of Amsterdam. Both lectures explore the contrast and collaboration between two types of standpoint on the world, each of which finds expression in a specific use of the first-person pronoun “I.” One standpoint is the particular standpoint we have on the world insofar as we are spatially and temporally located, biologically unique, socially and culturally determined individuals. The other is the universally communicable standpoint we share or can hope to share with all other human beings, whatever their particular biological, social, or cultural determination. The book explores the degree to which using the first-person pronoun “I” is the expression of one or the other standpoint. The first lecture explores this question in relation to the exercise of our mental capacities in abstract reasoning and knowledge of objective facts about the world. The second lecture explores this question in relation to what we take to be our moral obligations.

Abstract:
In the 1960s, Snow’s cultural celebrity led to many trips to the United States and the Soviet Union. Much in demand as a lecturer on science and the humanities, Snow was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Wesleyan University. Resentful of her subordinated status as ‘Lady Snow’, Pamela nevertheless accompanied him on his travels. In the Soviet Union they were treated as honoured guests and enjoyed many visits to the dachas of leading Russian writers and intellectuals. Their support of Russian writers, however, led to attacks upon them as fellow-travellers. Pamela based her comic novel about American academic life on her time at Wesleyan University (Night and Silence, Who is Here?), and during the 1960s she became a regular and vibrant contributor to various BBC cultural programmes, primarily with the remit of reporting on current fiction.

Full text
Abstract:
This second volume of the Critical Edition of Whitehead covers Whitehead’s second and third years of lectures at Harvard University and Radcliffe College. It reveals the development of his philosophy during the crucial period between the publication of Science and the Modern World and his delivery of the Gifford lectures that would become Process and Reality as he tested his theories in a classroom setting. These lectures challenge longstanding speculations about when exactly Whitehead developed some of his most famous metaphysical concepts, and how those concepts are to be properly interpreted against the wider backdrop of his life and thought. Also included is a transcript of the only known lecture Whitehead delivered on the topic of ethics, two mid-year exams given to his students, and nearly 2,000 footnotes that provide additional context for the lectures and alternative student accounts of key passages.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the pulpit of Protestant Dissent in nineteenth-century Britain and North America. It focuses on a specific rhetorical genre: the lectures that seasoned ministers gave to young men just starting their careers. Texts considered include Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students; the Yale Lectures on Preaching by Henry Ward Beecher, R.W. Dale, and other prominent figures; and several discourses delivered before the Theological Union of Victoria University, in Toronto, Canada. Topics addressed in the chapter include the importance of pastoral visitation and prayer; suggestions for overseeing music, Scripture readings, and all other aspects of the worship service; the goals and purposes of preaching; and strategies and techniques for preparing and delivering sermons. The chapter concludes by suggesting avenues for further study. Promising topics might include comparing these lectures to other nineteenth- and twentieth-century discourses and examining sermon texts written not only by the lecturers themselves, but also by women, people of colour, and others not represented in this study.

Full text
Abstract:
Barrier-free communication includes all measures to reduce obstacles to communication in various situations and fields of action. Due to disabilities, illnesses, different educational opportunities or drastic life events, people have very different needs in terms of how texts or communications must be prepared for them in order to meet their individual requirements and access prerequisites. In this handbook, the topic of accessible communication is examined in interdisciplinary breadth and critically reflected upon. Current findings, proposed solutions and desiderata from research are juxtaposed with reports from practitioners and users who provide insights into how they deal with accessible communication and highlight current and future requirements and problems. Christiane Maaß, University of Hildesheim, is Professor of Media Linguistics at the Institute for Translation Studies and Specialised Communication and Head of the Research Centre for Easy Language. Isabel Rink, University of Hildesheim, is managing director of the Research Centre for Easy Language, programme coordinator of the Master's programme in Accessible Communication and a lecturer at the Institute for Translation Studies and Specialised Communication.

Scholze, Peter, and Jared Weinstein. Berkeley Lectures on p-adic Geometry. Princeton University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691202082.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents an important breakthrough in arithmetic geometry. In 2014, this book's author delivered a series of lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on new ideas in the theory of p-adic geometry. Building on his discovery of perfectoid spaces, the author introduced the concept of “diamonds,” which are to perfectoid spaces what algebraic spaces are to schemes. The introduction of diamonds, along with the development of a mixed-characteristic shtuka, set the stage for a critical advance in the discipline. This book shows that the moduli space of mixed-characteristic shtukas is a diamond, raising the possibility of using the cohomology of such spaces to attack the Langlands conjectures for a reductive group over a p-adic field. The book follows the informal style of the original Berkeley lectures, with one chapter per lecture. It explores p-adic and perfectoid spaces before laying out the newer theory of shtukas and their moduli spaces. Points of contact with other threads of the subject, including p-divisible groups, p-adic Hodge theory, and Rapoport-Zink spaces, are thoroughly explained.
