Abstract:
This research project addressed the need for an adult day services (ADS) program in La Paz, Bolivia. Adult day services are community-based programs that provide a variety of services to functionally impaired adults through an individual plan of care. Adult day services are structured, comprehensive programs that offer services during any part of the day but fewer than 24 hours. I examined professionals' perceptions and attitudes about the needs of old adults in La Paz and the importance and viability of implementing an ADS program to meet those needs. The political economy of aging perspective provided the theoretical framework for this study. This theory focuses on the way that values and prevalent societal attitudes influence people's views of the aged population and the type of programs they believe should be developed for the care of that population. The review of literature addresses the needs assessment process and the U.S. model for ADS. An overview of the current situation of the elderly population in La Paz is presented in order to portray the context in which new programs for seniors would be developed in that city. Study participants, who provide a variety of services to old adults and their families in La Paz, completed interviews regarding (a) their perceptions of the needs of the old adults of La Paz, (b) the significance of developing a new program for their care, and (c) the feasibility of implementing an ADS program. I used descriptive and associational statistics to assess the attitudes and perceptions of respondents, the similarities and differences among their responses, and possible influences on their viewpoints. I extracted common themes in answers to the open-ended questions by employing qualitative techniques. The results of the interviews revealed that although professionals perceive that societal views of old adults are very negative in La Paz, they also believe this segment of the population is in great need of services that provide better, more adequate physical, emotional, social, and medical care than the services that exist today. Professionals also believed that it is crucial to develop new programs that address these issues and they considered ADS to be a viable alternative to institutionalization. However, their ideas about the structure and activities offered by an ADS program were quite different than those of the standard U.S. model. In order for the implementation of an ADS program to be successful in Bolivia it would have to be adapted to the cultural and economic context of that country.

Abstract:
In this thesis I address the research question, 'How do nursery nurses, in day nurseries, interpret the Early Learning Goals?' This question arises out of questions raised during my work as an Ofsted Nursery Inspector (RgNI) and the changing curriculum for pre-school children. Nursery nurses have an outcome curriculum which they are required to follow upon and this curriculum stresses the importance ofliteracy and numeracy. Most nursery nurses have had little training in these matters. I look at the changes in the curriculum and the effect it has had on nursery nurses working in day nurseries. I discovered that the child developmental approach, found in nursery nurse training, runs contrary to the outcomes curriculum which is being developed at present. I found that the introduction of the Early Learning Goals and the Foundation Stage, which the nursery nurses are required to follow, has caused confusion, time wasting and a lowering of morale in some day nurseries. The change from a child developmental curriculum to an outcome curriculum has meant that nursery nurses have to plan, assess and teach children skills, for which they judge many are not ready. Nursery nurses have not been trained to teach reading and writing skills or to teach anything other than basic numeracy and they do not think that teaching those subjects is necessary. I also set out to show how the role of the nursery nurse as a carer is being diminished, in order that the literacy and numeracy of children in school are improved. I show that many children in theday nurseries that I studied, needed the care that nursery nurses can give them, if they are to be ready for the world of school. The method used for this study was a qualitative or naturalistic research. I used a small-scale study and decided that the theories to be tested would arise in the data. I decided to collect the data over a period of eighteen months, by interviews and observations in three different types of day nurseries; a community nursery, a local authority nursery and a day nursery which was part of a large chain. I then analysed the data and built up a picture a picture of the complex roles and tasks of a nursery nurse. I then looked at the training of nursery nurses, using documents which nursery nurses in my study would have used for their training. I compared this with the present outcomes related requirements by Ofsted. I suggest that young children in day nurseries still need a great deal of help with their personal, social and emotional development, as well as their health and hygiene skills and language development. The nursery nurse training fitted the nursery nurses with a caring role, which they saw as important. They were trained to help three to five-year-old children adapt to a group situation and also provide the atmosphere and learning through play, which they might get if they were at home. They felt that it was important for children to have a good self-image and for them to enjoy being with other children. I found that the nursery nurses, whom I interviewed, thought that there needs to be an acceptance that some children require more caring and less teaching between the ages of three to five years, in order to prepare them for school. I conclude that the outcomes curriculum fails to take these arguments into account and that it is more important that young children are well prepared for school, where trained teachers can then develop their literacy and numeracy skills

Abstract:
On-site childcare is an ever-increasing form of childcare. By understanding the decisions, experiences and feelings of mothers using on-site centers, informed policy decisions about viable childcare models can be made. In the broadest terms current literature reveals that economic, societal, functional, and psychological factors influence a mother's decisions in regards to using childcare. This study used these markers as the basis for the development of questions to ascertain the experiences, feelings and decisions of mothers using on-site childcare. A phenomenological method was used. Twenty-four participants using on-site childcare from four organizations in different industries were located through a snowball sample for in-depth interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded to derive themes of experiences. The findings reveal that on-site childcare impacts previously described effects of childcare. The factors of primary influence are child proximity and organizational support. The influence of close proximity can be seen in the themes of Networking, Organizational System Oneness, Family/Community Perception, Mothering Style, Center Quality, Work Time, Commuting Time, Nursing/Lactation, Guilt, Stress Management, and Employee Loyalty. Organizational assistance and support impact and overlap with proximity as a primary theme source. This can be seen in the themes of Cost, Networking, Organizational System Oneness, Waiting List, Center Quality, Work Time, Commuting Time, Nursing/Lactation, Stress Management and Employee Loyalty. The quality of the childcare, which in large part is made possible by the supporting organization, is held in such high regard that in some cases it overcomes the mother's desire for proximity. The implications of these findings are that high quality on-site childcare provides a significant benefit for mothers, organizations and communities. Family friendly organizational policy and feminist urban planning methods are better informed.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study was twofold: to develop a method for collecting voice data from natural working environments; and to study loading changes. Changes caused by loading were approached from two perspectives: the relationship between subjective complaints and objectively measured voice features, and the changes of objective variables during one working day. Subjects consisted of female teachers from primary and secondary schools. Six separate studies were carried out, the number of subjects for each one ranging from 3 to 33. The subjects were 33 - 59 years old. Recordings were made of their voices both during breaks and lessons with a portable DAT recorder. The recordings made during the breaks were collected on three days of one week, and four times on each week. The speech samples of the lessons were taken from the first and last lesson of the day. Subjects filled in a questionnaire about their voice, which divided them into two groups: those with few complaints (the FC group) and those with many complaints (the MC group). In addition, three subjects performed a laboratory voice loading task. The speech sample recorded during breaks was a maximally sustained [a], from which fundamental frequency (F0), jitter and shimmer were analyzed. The lesson samples were analyzed for F0, its standard deviation (F0 SD), sound pressure level (SPL), its standard deviation (SPL SD), F0 time ( = active vibration time of the vocal folds) and long-time average spectrum (LTAS). The laboratory samples (a simple reading task) were measured for F0. Additionally, an index (F0 x F0 time/ 1000) for assessing voice loading is presented. The results showed that voice complaints correlated with objectively measured voice features: the more the complaints, the higher the F0 and SPL, the larger the F0 SD and the steeper the tilt of the LTAS, the latter indicating that the voices of the MC group had a tendency towards a hypofunctional voice usage. In addition, at the end of the working week the shimmer values of the MC group were lower than those of the FC group. During the working day, the F0 rose, F0 SD and SPL SD increased and the LTAS levelled out (changes towards a hyperfunctional voice usage). Some of these changes are caused by the classroom situation, some by the teachers themselves, and some (obviously the changes of the F0 and the LTAS) by physiological alterations. Interestingly, the main changes, which were the F0 rise and levelling of the spectrum, occurred in the FC-group. The changes possibly reflect a normal adaptation of the human body, and they may act as an alarm system for avoiding excessive strain and exhaustion. The voice loading index correlated with the voice complaints. The experiment showed that the used method is well suited for the measurement of voices in working places. The maximally sustained phonation proved to be a suitable voice task for the measurement of the voice in working places where subjects have to do a task independently. The results also showed that F0 yields different values in different conditions and with different voice tasks. This deserves attention when defining standards for acoustic variables.

Abstract:
This study investigates the reasons why Working Holiday Makers (WHMs) in Australia decide to complete the 88 days of specified regional work to obtain a Second Working Holiday (WH) visa. The research follows a qualitative approach via the use of semi-structed interviews on a sample of fifteen current or former WHMs. The resulting data are analysed in connection to the theoretical framework of migrants’ role in bifurcated labour markets, with a further focus on the micro-level neoclassical economics principles and the concept of self-improvement through hardship. It is argued that the 88-day scheme represented for all the interviewees a form of investment to achieve a greater goal. The findings revealed that, while only a few completed the 88 days driven by the desire to achieve self-actualisation, most of the informants were driven by an economic rationale: some focused on the short-term financial benefits of a further year of work in the country, while others planned to use their Second WH as a pathway towards permanent residency.

Abstract:
Inhibitory control is vital to typical development and matures rapidly throughout early childhood. Inhibitory control deficits are seen in both autism spectrum disorders and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and, along with other executive functions, inhibitory control contributes to school success. The tasks used to measure and stress these skills in children have not been fully explored. Even given the cognitive development levels of young children, the current inhibitory control tasks for preschoolers are not completely comparable to the tasks used with adults. For my thesis study, I added a mixed condition to the day/night inhibitory control task in preschool children using methodological design features from the Dimensional Change Card Sort (DCCS) Task. This addition allowed the day/night task to serve as a better analogue to the Stroop task, which is an inhibitory control task commonly used with adults. In addition, electroencephalogram (EEG) illuminated the neural patterns of the task in children at age four. This study demonstrated that the borders condition of the day/night task is an appropriate executive function task that can be used with preschool aged children.

Family day care providers operate at the interface of the private and the public. They are self-employed and work at home, yet their 'suitability' to provide childcare is scrutinised by officials and rules and regulations operating on different levels which can restrict their business opportunities. Family day care takes place in a particular cultural context concerning ideas of childrearing and against the backdrop of other childcare and educational provision. The focus of the thesis is the family day care provider, one of the members in the childcare triangle of child, parents and childcare worker. Previous research was mainly interested in the quality of childcare provided and parents' satisfaction. Here working conditions, such as hours worked, workload, income are examined, as are career prospects. Who are the women who become family day care providers and how do they see their future? The daily routines of family day care providers are examined and possible detenninants investigated. However, perceived needs of children may differ from demands arising out of parents' reason for using this kind of childcare service. Family day care providers accounts are examined in order to identify the various aspects of childcare arrangements and how to develop relationships that promote successful arrangements. Since family day care takes place in the home other family members are part of the setting and are affected by their mother's or wife's work. At the same time their contribution to the work of a family day care provider has to be included in the investigation ofthe working conditions. The comparison of family day care providers living in two different locations, four local authorities in the Northeast of England and one town in the Northeast of Germany allows the influence of family and childcare policies and the impact of cultural perceptions of good childrearing practices to be traced. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was employed. Apart from new insights into the actual working conditions of family day care providers, a better understanding of the intended and unintended effects of policies regulating family day care has been gained. The findings contribute to the debate on paid and unpaid work, and paid and unpaid care, as well as to the debate over equal opportunities, showing a more complicated relationship than just a gendered division.

Abstract:
This thesis project explores the discourse in Mormon culture addressing Mormon female communities. The discussion is sociological rather than theological and examines the functional characteristics of discourse found in the tradition regarding women. It sets out to review a paradox in the discourse addressing Mormon women that has been documented over time. I examine how this paradox in Mormon discourse establishes and limits women's roles; to do so, I use personal examples and the experience provided by thirteen women whom I interviewed.The thesis is divided into three main discussions: Community, Discursive Action and Cooperation. My methodology involves a theoretical discussion of discourse and community and observes how discourse helps to create and shape identities with respect to that community. I then use the theoretical discussion to illuminate poignant moments of social texture through collected interviews. My method of ethnography involved tape-recorded interviews with thirteen women. The thesis reviews the women's discourse as representative samples that demonstrate how the paradox has created resistance and sometimes confusion in their own lives. I then make suggestions for addressing particular discursive practices with an eye toward fostering respect and appreciation for and among Mormon women.

Work stress in doctors is an issue for the doctors themselves, their patients, and healthcare organisations as a whole. Previous research indicates that work stress is a cause for concern in trainee doctors in particular. While their stress has been largely attributed to organisational factors such as long working hours, a demanding workload and changeable work conditions, the specifics of when and why stress occurs, how it is experienced and its impact has not been thoroughly investigated. Recent advances in methods of tracking ambulatory changes in work activity, behaviour and physiological functioning make it possible to study correlates of stress as they occur. The studies presented in this PhD thesis use advanced technologies and methodologies with the aim of providing new information to quantify the working day of a trainee doctor and investigate in real time the possible determinants, correlates and patient safety relevant consequences of their stress. The PhD contributes methodologically by investigating the validity of standard measures of workplace stress, and by documenting and evaluating a complex real time protocol to measure workplace stress in doctors. Results from the main empirical study reported in this thesis reveal what a typical working day entails for doctors in their first postgraduate year. The tasks and situational factors they are most likely to find stressful are discussed in detail, as are the performance-related consequences of their stress. Based on these results, suggestions have been made for future research and practice, with implications for medical training and the development of future interventions to alleviate stress in trainee doctors.

O trabalho em Instituições de saúde que funcionam vinte e quatro horas envolve jornadas exaustivas, com reflexos na qualidade da assistência. Este estudo objetivou comparar indicadores hospitalares em dois períodos distintos: um com jornada de trabalho da enfermagem de 6 horas e outro com 12 horas. Estudo quantitativo, descritivo, retrospectivo e comparativo, realizou o levantamento dos indicadores queda do leito, número de acidentes de trabalho da enfermagem, número de óbitos, taxa de infecção hospitalar, taxa de ocupação, média de permanência, número de funcionários da enfermagem e número de leitos em um hospital escola, no período de 01/1999 a 12/2006. Os resultados demonstraram que os indicadores de queda, número de óbitos e média de permanência apresentaram melhores índices no período em que a Instituição adotava a jornada de 6 horas; e quando adotava a jornada de 12 horas houve um crescimento de 126% nas quedas e 27,6% nos óbitos.
Health institutions that work twenty-four hours a day frequently have exhausting workingdays, reflected in the quality of the attendance. This study aimed at comparing hospital indicators in two different periods: one for a nursing 6-hour working-day and other for a 12- hour working-day. A quantitative, descriptive, retrospective and comparative study, it has performed the raising of the indicators: fall from the bed, number of nursing occupational accidents, number of deaths, rate of hospital infection, occupation rate, average of stay, number of nursing employees and number of beds in a hospital school, in the period from 01/1999 to 12/2006. The results have shown that the indexes of fall, number of deaths and average of stay were better when the institution had a 6-hour working-day, and the 12-hour working-day was related to an increase of 126% on the falls and to an increase of 27,6% on the deaths.

La importancia de la Jornada Atípica Acumulativa en la minería en nuestro país radica en que facilita mayores niveles de producción y utiliza para ello la fuerza laboral de los trabajadores mineros en ciclos de trabajo (o también llamados sistemas de trabajo) que consisten en períodos acumulativos de trabajo y que son compensados también con períodos acumulativos de descanso, pero para ello debe cumplirse con diversos parámetros constitucionales (Constitución Política de 1993, Sentencias del Tribunal Constitucional y Convenio 01 de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo - OIT) así como con diversos parámetros legales (TUO de la Ley de Jornada y su Reglamento, Consolidación de los Descansos Remunerados y su Reglamento) y otros parámetros interpretativos sumamente importantes (Directivas e Informes del Ministerio de Trabajo – MTPE). De contar con dichos parámetros la jornada atípica acumulativa en la minería será constitucionalmente y legalmente válida. Más, luego de precisar la constitucionalidad y legalidad de este tipo de jornada de trabajo, corresponde ahora definir algunos aspectos importantes de casuística respecto al cálculo de la Jornada Atípica Acumulativa en la Minería que servirán para despejar algunas dudas en este tema poco estudiado aún en el Derecho Laboral y en el Derecho Minero. Y finalmente corresponde desarrollar una propuesta normativa que regule todos los aspectos necesarios para la aplicación de este tipo especial de jornadas de trabajo.
The importance of Atypical Cumulative Working Day in mining in our country is that it facilitates increased production and uses for this labor force miners to work cycles (also called work systems) consisting of periods cumulative work and are also offset by cumulative periods of rest, but this should be met with various constitutional parameters (1993 Constitution, Constitutional Court rulings and Convention 01 of the International Labour Organization - ILO) as well as various legal parameters (Journey Act and Regulations, Consolidation of Remunerated Breaks and Regulations) and other highly important interpretative parameters (Directives and Reports of the Ministry of Labour - MLEP). To have these parameters cumulative atypical journey in mining will be constitutionally and legally valid. Moreover, after specifying the constitutionality and legality of this type of working day, it is now necessary to define some important aspects of casuistry regarding the calculation of the Cumulative Atypical Working Day in Mining that will serve to clear up some doubts in this little studied subject still in the Labor Law and Mining Law. And finally it corresponds to develop a normative proposal that regulates all the necessary aspects for the application of this special type of working days.

Resumo: Ao longo das duas últimas décadas, o Brasil assistiu a mudanças expressivas em relação ao tempo de trabalho. Através da realização de nosso estudo foi possível constatar a existência de três padrões do tempo de trabalho no Brasil, que revelam dois momentos distintos: um primeiro, delimitado entre 1992-1998 e entre 1999-2003, onde se verifica um processo de alongamento das horas trabalhadas acompanhado pela exacerbação da flexibilização e da intensificação da jornada de trabalho e, um segundo, ocorrido entre 2004-2009, em que a duração do trabalho sugere um movimento de maior padronização da jornada de trabalho de acordo com a legislação laboral. Na realidade, este último padrão representa um marco na história do tempo de trabalho no Brasil, mas que exige certa cautela em sua análise, uma vez que continuaram a se ampliar os mecanismos de flexibilização e intensificação utilizados pelas empresas

By performing our work, we determined the existence of three patterns of working time in Brazil, which reveal two distinct periods: the first, delimited between 1992-1998 and between 1999-2003, where there is a process of elongation the hours worked accompanied by exacerbation of flexibility and the intensification of the working day and a second occurred between 2004-2009, where the duration of the work suggests a movement of greater standardization of working day of according to the labor law. Indeed, the latter pattern represents a boundary in the history of working time in Brazil, but that requires some caution in his analysis, since continued to expand the flexibility and intensification mechanisms used by companies

Abstract: The main problem of this work is the understanding the reasons for the long journeys of work by executives of success. To do this, it was necessary a previous study on the recent transformations in the labor market and the increase on competition. Resumo: O trabalho em Instituições de saúde que funcionam vinte e quatro horas envolve jornadas exaustivas, com reflexos na qualidade da assistência. Este estudo objetivou comparar indicadores hospitalares em dois períodos distintos: um com jornada de trabalho da enfermagem de 6 horas e outro com 12 horas. Estudo quantitativo, descritivo, retrospectivo e comparativo, realizou o levantamento dos indicadores queda do leito, número de acidentes de trabalho da enfermagem, número de óbitos, taxa de infecção hospitalar, taxa de ocupação, média de permanência, número de funcionários da enfermagem e número de leitos em um hospital escola, no período de 01/1999 a 12/2006. Os resultados demonstraram que os indicadores de queda, número de óbitos e média de permanência apresentaram melhores índices no período em que a Instituição adotava a jornada de 6 horas; e quando adotava a jornada de 12 horas houve um crescimento de 126% nas quedas e 27,6% nos óbitos.
Abstract: Health institutions that work twenty-four hours a day frequently have exhausting workingdays, reflected in the quality of the attendance. This study aimed at comparing hospital indicators in two different periods: one for a nursing 6-hour working-day and other for a 12- hour working-day. A quantitative, descriptive, retrospective and comparative study, it has performed the raising of the indicators: fall from the bed, number of nursing occupational accidents, number of deaths, rate of hospital infection, occupation rate, average of stay, number of nursing employees and number of beds in a hospital school, in the period from 01/1999 to 12/2006. The results have shown that the indexes of fall, number of deaths and average of stay were better when the institution had a 6-hour working-day, and the 12-hour working-day was related to an increase of 126% on the falls and to an increase of 27,6% on the deaths.

Denna studies syfte är att identifiera arbetsgivares attityder kring arbetstidsförkortning, samt finna svar på om de ser det som ett realistiskt alternativ inför framtiden. För att lyckas uppnå vårt syfte har vi utgått från en kvalitativ metod med ett induktivt synsätt. Vi har intervjuat fem representanter från olika företag för att undersöka hur de ser på arbetstidsförkortning som fenomen. Resultatet visar att arbetsgivare både ser för- och nackdelar med arbetstidsförkortning. De största hindren mot att införa arbetstidsförkortning som våra informanter ser är företagens okunskap, känsla av osäkerhet samt risken för ekonomiska förluster. Fördelarna som de ser är framförallt att arbetstidsförkortning kan öka balansen mellan arbete och fritid, gynna jämställdheten i samhället samt att det är ett sätt att orka arbeta högre upp i åldrarna när pensionsåldern höjs. Resultatet visar även att arbetsgivare ser ännu mer flexibilitet i framtiden och att de idag inte ser tillräckligt stort behov av kortare arbetsdagar för att det ska bli en prioriterad fråga för deras företag. Om sjuktalen däremot ökar kan de se arbetstidsförkortning som ett alternativ även i deras organisationer.
The purpose of this study is to identify the employers' attitudes concerning working time reduction, and find answers to whether they see it as a realistic alternative for the future. In order to succeed in achieving our goal, we have used a qualitative method with an inductive approach. We have interviewed five representatives from different companies in order to investigate what they think about work time reduction as a phenomenon. The result shows that employers see both advantages and disadvantages of working hours reduction. The biggest obstacles to the implement of working hours reduction that our informants see are the companies' lack of knowledge, a sense of uncertainty and the risk of financial losses. The advantages that they see are especially that working hours reduction can increase the balance between work and leisure, benefit gender equality in society and that it is a way for employees to be able to work all the way to retirement, even when the retirement age increases. The result also shows that employers see even more flexibility in the future and that they do not currently see sufficient need for shorter working days in order for it to be a priority issue for their company. On the other hand, if the sickness rate increases, they can see reduction of working hours as an alternative even in their organizations.

Esta tese é um estudo das vivências cotidianas de trabalhadores em relação ao tempo de trabalho e ao tempo de não trabalho. O locus de análise privilegiado é o espaço do local de trabalho. A pesquisa tomou como caso para estudo a Volkswagen do Brasil, em sua unidade de produção do ABC-São Paulo, exemplo emblemático de iniciativas e negociações dirigidas a flexibilizar a jornada de trabalho. A análise se concentra no período compreendido entre 1995 e 2005, quando foram intensas as mudanças com respeito à organização e gestão do tempo de trabalho. A tese se divide em duas partes. Na primeira, constante de três capítulos, revisa-se a literatura internacional sobre os modos de construção social do tempo e do tempo de trabalho, e apresenta-se o debate recente sobre duas experiências contrastantes, a da França e a do Brasil. Na segunda parte, formada por sete outros capítulos, apresenta-se inicialmente o contexto da Volkswagen do Brasil, com base na analise de material documental e de entrevistas com trabalhadores, dirigentes sindicais e gerentes da empresa; em seguida, analisam-se as vivências temporais cotidianas dos trabalhadores, com base em entrevistas semi-diretivas e diários de usos do tempo.
This thesis is a study of daily life of workers regarding their experiences and discourses on the work time and the non- work time. The workplace is the privileged locus of analysis. The empirical research examines the case of Volkswagen-Brazil in its assembly plant in ABC region, São Paulo, emblematic example of initiatives and negociations driven to achieve flexible work conditions and employment relations. The analysis focuses the period 1995- 2005 when most intense changes took place. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part begins with a review of the national and international literature on time and work time as societal constructions; the following two chapters present the recent debate on two opposing experiences, France\'s and Brazil\'s. In the second part, formed by seven chapters there is an initial presentation of the context of Volkswagen do Brasil, based on the analysis of documental material as well as interviews with workers, union leaders and managers. The last six chapters analyze the daily temporal experience of different groups of workers based on semi-directed interviews and time diaries.

The basis for practical thesis served theoretical thesis. Exploring the phenomenon of a block of flats in theoretical thesis led to turn to the topic of the panel surface mines. At first glance unrelated topics, however, contains an important connection. The coal industry forms an essential part of the development of the current form of North Bohemia, a form of large prefabricated housing. Interest in the originality of the construction in the settlements led to this issue. The work consists of several authentic records and materials from surface mines in Bílina processed in painting and video.

HIV/AIDS is a fairly new condition. Despite a large amount of published literature regarding its clinical aspects, there is a paucity of South African research and information relating to the attitudes and feelings of the physicians who diagnose, care for and make decisions with regard to these patients, especially children. Several studies suggest that health care workers who provide clinical care for Persons with HIV/AIDS (PWA's) may have an intolerant attitude towards them. As the number of children with HIV/AIDS increases, the burden of care will shift to health care workers at primary level care. It was therefore decided to assess the attitudes of doctors at primary level care facilities in Cape Town, towards paediatric patients with HIV/AIDS. The results of this study are crucial given the increasing exposure of doctors at this level to HIV/AIDS patients and understanding their response to its management. The objectives of the study were to: assess whether doctors' knowledge of the patient's HIV positive status affects their attitudes and management of the patient; assess doctors' perceived competency with regard to the management of paediatric AIDS; determine doctors' opinions with regard to HIV testing, the utilisation of diagnostic investigations and treatment; determine doctors' main concerns with regard to the management of paediatric patients with HIV/AIDS. A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst all doctors working at the clinics and day hospitals in Cape Town during the period February to April 1997. Seventy-eight doctors (51 % response rate) working in the clinics and day hospitals in Cape Town each completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. Doctors in this survey generally displayed a positive, humanistic attitude towards children with HIV/AIDS. In the majority of cases the knowledge of the child 's HIV positive status did not impact negatively on their management of the child. Interestingly, 86% of respondents felt that they would always/mostly take extra care in applying universal precautions when they know that the child is HIV positive. There is a lack of confidence in their counselling and clinical competency in the management of children with HIV/AIDS. The main source of information with regard to paediatric HIV/AIDS is journals (69%), followed by in-service training (53%) and colleagues (49%). In contrast, the preferred sources of information were in-service training (68%) and organised discussion groups/workshops (65%). Most were in favour of routine HIV testing of pregnant women and informed consent for HIV testing. However, not everyone agreed that pre-HIV test counselling was necessary in the case of children. Confidentiality of positive test results was not favoured in the majority of cases (65%) and disclosure even without the consent of the patient/carer was supported. Priority concerns relating to the management of paediatric HIV/AIDS, were lack of support in the community for parents and children, lack of policy and management guidelines and the lack of resources in the health services to cope with the burden of care. This study identifies the need for specific training in HIV/AIDS for medical doctors at primary level care facilities. The foundation of this training must begin with medical students during their clinical years but training and support should continue through in-service training. Training strategies, which address the clinical and psychological challenges presented by this disease, should be employed. In addition, clinical guidelines, which are relevant to South Africa and evidence-based, should be adopted nationally. Resources should be available to support these guidelines. It is further recommended that policies be underpinned by appropriate legislation which protects the rights of patients and health care workers in order to minimise the effects of individual attitudes and biases with regard to the treatment of PWAs.

Clinical learning experiences form an integral part of the 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses' training, because it is in the clinical placement that nurses should acquire the knowledge, skills and values that are necessary for professional practice competency. Nurses who are working night shift routinely feel deserted and left out of the information sphere. In most cases, these nurses find themselves in situations of staff shortages, diminished resources and reduced managerial direction. This situation is leading to demotivation. Maslow’s theory in relation to the hierarchy of human needs is regarded as the basic motivators of human activity. Maslow’s theoretical framework of the hierarchy of basic human needs was employed to compare the motivational needs of 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses who were working either night or day shift at the time of data collection. The purpose of the study was to compare the motivational needs of 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses who were working day and / or night shift. The researcher followed a quantitative, descriptive and comparative survey design with a sample of the population. A sample of 2nd year (n = 103) and 3rd year learner nurses (n = 103) was drawn from each group and a 100 fully completed questionnaires were submitted by each group. The researcher gathered the data with the assistance of a self-administered questionnaire that comprised primarily of closed-ended questions and a 5-point Likert scale was employed to capture their responses. The researcher used a structured questionnaire to explore the perceptions of the 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses about their needs to acquire motivation in the workplace in the context of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The researcher used descriptive and inferential statistics to analyse the data. Data was plotted and expressed by means of frequency tables. Descriptive statistical analysis and associations between various variables were completed by using parametric tests. The findings of the study were related to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; i.e. the physiological, safety, social, self-esteem and self-actualisation needs to motivate the 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses during day and night shift. The findings include significant differences between the needs of 2nd and 3rd year respondents in relation to working day and night shift at the health service institutions in the Western Cape Province. In Item 27, the perceived needs of the 2nd and 3rd year respondents to be placed in their units of preference during night shift varied between never to sometimes. The 2nd year respondents (n = 74, 74.0%) and (n = 74, 76.8%) of 3rd year respondents on night shift experienced their need to be placed in a unit of preference to be considered. From the descriptive statistics (Tables 4.15 – 4.220), it was evident that the 2nd year respondents did neither have the highest nor lowest mean values across the study; the observation for the 3rd year respondents was similar. The mean values of night shift respondents mostly scored lower than the day shift mean values. The inferential statistics indicated significant differences between 2nd and 3rd year day shift respondents and between 2nd and 3rd year night shift respondents with night shift depicting more significant differences than day shift. That confirmed that both 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses’ motivational needs of night shift respondents were more pronounced than the needs of day shift respondents. Emerging from this research, recommendations were formulated for clinical educators, nurse educators, unit managers and professional nurses in accordance with Maslow's hierarchy of needs with the purpose of meeting the motivational needs of the 2nd and 3rd year learner nurses at the health service institutions in the Western Cape Province. Validity and reliability principles were applied during the entire research process. The reliability and validity of the research instrument was determined by applying Cronbach's alpha test. The Cronbach alpha coefficients were 0.93 and 0.93 for the day and night shift respondents respectively. Those values were above 70% and close to 100%, which indicated that the questionnaire had been a reliable research instrument. All coefficients of the pilot study were above 70% which indicated that the instrument was consistent and reliable. The reliability of the questions were tested for content and face validity. The researcher observed ethical considerations during the entire research process. Ethical considerations of beneficence, avoiding undue intrusion, the right to privacy, confidentiality, fair treatment, respect for the respondents, the right to freedom and the right to withdraw from the study at any stage, informed consent and protecting respondents from any harm were adhered to. The respondents provided written consent that acknowledged those ethical principles.

Information Age has been providing accelerated development of technologies in teaching, which is making the increase in distance courses and flexibility in the tutors everyday work. In this context, it was aimed to study the influence of flexible work in the development of activities and personal life of the tutors in Distance Education at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. More specifically, they have been sought to compare the types of flexibility detected, identifying the extent of the day's work in mentoring; investigating the relationship between flexible working time and productivity; evaluating the Quality of Working Life (QWL) and for Work and Family Relationship of the tutors. Thus, work is justified by the importance of academic and organizational achievement. To meet the goals, it was obtained a sample of 75 respondents (45.73% of the population). The data collection instrument was comprised of 48 variables mainly based by Walton (1975) and Paschoal, Tamayo and Barham (2002). The statistical techniques used were: analysis of frequency, ratio test, factor analysis and regression. The results collected have shown that the presence and distance tutors experience similar realities, but have different profiles; the day of their work is on average three hours daily; in view of the tutors, flexibility has a relation with the production, QWL work-family balance were evaluated in a satisfactory manner and the statistical techniques used have shown significant influence between the QWL and flexible working day. It is therefore concluded that flexibility at work can influence the development of activities and personal life of the tutors. Thus, the flexible working day may be used in a strategy way of routine in many organizations
A Era da Informa??o vem proporcionando o desenvolvimento acelerado das tecnologias na doc?ncia, o que est? viabilizando o aumento de cursos ? dist?ncia e a flexibilidade na jornada de trabalho dos tutores. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se estudar a influ?ncia do trabalho flex?vel no desenvolvimento das atividades e na vida pessoal dos tutores na Educa??o ? Dist?ncia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. Mais especificamente, buscou-se comparar os tipos de flexibilidade detectados; identificar a extens?o da jornada de trabalho na tutoria, investigar a rela??o entre o hor?rio flex?vel e a produtividade, avaliar a Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho (QVT) e a Rela??o Trabalho e Fam?lia dos tutores. Diante disso, o trabalho justifica-se pela relev?ncia dos resultados alcan?ados no meio acad?mico e organizacional. Para atender aos objetivos obteve-se uma amostra de 75 respondentes (45,73% da popula??o). O instrumento de coleta de dados foi composto por 48 vari?veis fundamentadas principalmente em Walton (1975) e Paschoal, Tamayo e Barham (2002). A presente dissertação foi desenvolvida no âmbito do Mestrado Profissional em Gestão e Avaliação da Educação (PPGP) do Centro de Políticas Públicas e Avaliação da Educação da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (CAEd/UFJF). O caso de gestão analisado tem como objetivo investigar as dificuldades enfrentadas por uma escola de tempo integral na organização do tempo escolar. Destacamos as possibilidades de organização desse tempo no cotidiano das práticas educativas docentes, e como a gestão escolar, em suas múltiplas dimensões, pode contribuir para a apropriação qualitativa do tempo educativo. A metodologia adotada envolve uma abordagem qualitativa, com a adoção de um estudo de caso. Foram utilizadas, para a coleta de dados, entrevistas semiestruturadas com o gestor, os coordenadores pedagógicos e os professores; análise documental; observação; e revisão bibliográfica. Na discussão teórica, dialogamos com os autores Ana Maria Cavaliere (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010), Vitor Henrique Paro (1988, 2013), Lúcia Velloso Maurício (2014a, 2014b), Heloísa Lück (1996, 2000, 2008, 2009), Moacir Gadotti (2009), José Carlos Libâneo (2012, 2013), Henry Mintzberg (2010), dentre outros, quanto ao posicionamento sobre a escola integral no Brasil e a atuação do gestor escolar. A partir da análise empreendida, o estudo mostra que a escola de tempo integral enfrenta alguns desafios que influenciam diretamente em sua qualidade, tais como: dificuldades na organização do tempo educativo devido a uma matriz curricular extensa, sem as chamadas atividades integradas; descontinuidade do trabalho pedagógico causada principalmente pela rotatividade de profissionais que atuam no programa; ausência de formação continuada para gestores e professores, de forma a atender as demandas formativas do tempo integral. A partir das reflexões sobre este estudo de caso, são propostas ações que podem subsidiar a escola e a Secretaria de Educação do Estado na implementação da escola de tempo integral, de forma a contribuir para a melhoria da educação dos alunos que participam do programa. As proposições do Plano de Ação Educacional (PAE) alcançam a formação continuada para gestores e professores; apontam para uma reconstrução permanente do currículo com o desenvolvimento de projetos e oficinas; indicam um processo seletivo de professores para atuação no programa; incentivam o protagonismo juvenil; e propõem a criação de uma coordenação geral com o objetivo de promover a avaliação e o monitoramento do programa e de seus resultados.
This work was developed for the Professional Master in Management and Education Evaluation (PPGP) of the Public Policy and Education Evaluation Center from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAED / UFJF). The case of management analyzed here aims to investigate the difficulties faced by a full-time school in relation to the organization of time. We highlight the possibilities for organizing this time in the daily educational practice of teachers, and how the school management, in its multiple dimensions, can contribute to the qualitative appropriation of the educational time. We use as methodology the qualitative approach and case study. They are used for data collect some semi-structured interviews with the manager, the coordinators and teachers; document analysis; observation; and literature review. In the theoretical discussion, we dialogue with the authors Ana Maria Cavaliere (2003, 2007, 2009, 2010), Vitor Henrique Paro (1988, 2013), Lúcia Velloso Maurício (2014a, 2014b), Heloísa Lück (1996, 2000, 2008, 2009), Moacir Gadotti (2009), José Carlos Libâneo (2012, 2013), Henry Mintzberg (2010), and others, who discuss the full-time school in Brazil and the role of the school manager. This study shows that the full-time school faces some challenges that influence directly their quality, such as: difficulties related to organization of the educational time due to an extensive curriculum without the so-called integrated activities; the pedagogical work discontinuance mainly caused by the rotation of professionals who work in the program; lack of continuing instruction for managers and teachers in order to meet the instructions demands of full-time. Considering the reflections about this case, we propose actions that may support the school and the State Department of Education on the implementation of full-time school, in order to contribute to improving the education of students who participateon the program. The Educational Action Plan propositions include the continuing instruction for managers and teachers; point to a permanent reconstruction of the curriculum with projects and workshops development; indicate a selection process of teachers to act in the program; encourage youth participation; and propose the creation of an overall coordination in order to promote the program evaluation and monitoring of its results.

Stora förändringar har skett på arbetsplatser under de senaste 40 åren.  Arbetsgivare ställer allt högre krav på sina arbetare att täcka upp längre och mer av arbetstiden det vill säga olika delar av dagen, veckan och året. Organisationers ständiga omstrukturering och nedskärning bidrar till underbemanning, vilket ökar arbetsbelastning samt stress på arbetarna som måste vara tillgängliga längre timmar för att klara av arbetskraven. Även att inte enbart arbetsplatsen ställer höga krav på individer, utan familjelivet och särskilt barnomsorg kräver mycket energi och tillgänglighet. Samt genom långa arbetspass så minskar automatiskt tiden och energin till att hinna spendera med familj och barn. Detta bidrar till konflikter mellan arbete-familjelivet.
Major changes have taken place in workplaces over the last 40 years.  Employers are increasingly demanding on their workers to cover up longer and more of working hours, i.e. different parts of the day, week and year. Organisations permanent restructuring and cutbacks contribute to understaffing, which increases workload and stress on the workers who must be available for longer hours to cope with the work requirements. Also that not only the workplace places high demands on individuals, but family life and especially child care requires a lot of energy and availability. As well as through long shifts, the time and energy are automatically reduced to spend with family and children. This contributes to conflict between work-family life.

O presente estudo tem por objetivo contribuir para o debate e análise crítica acerca das relações de trabalho, principalmente no âmbito do setor público, buscando apresentar a relação entre a redução da jornada de trabalho, exercício do tempo livre e condições de vida e de trabalho dos servidores da UFJF. Para isso, foram entrevistados sete trabalhadores técnico-administrativos em educação, dentre eles um representante sindical, a fim de analisar as percepções desses trabalhadores acerca do processo de regulamentação da jornada de trabalho reduzida, e sua repercussão em suas atividades de trabalho e em sua vida fora do trabalho. Os entrevistados foram unânimes em afirmar a jornada de trabalho de seis horas diárias como um fator importante no equilíbrio entre tempo de trabalho e tempo livre: pela ótica do trabalho na UFJF, a importância da ampliação do horário de funcionamento dos setores para atendimento aos usuários; para os servidores, a possibilidade de dedicação do tempo livre a atividades consideradas prazerosas, como viagens e passeios em família, e também na busca por informação e conhecimento.
This study aims to contribute to the debate and critical analysis about labor relations, especially in the public sector, seeking to present the relationship between the reduction of working hours, the exercise of free time, living and working conditions of the workers servers of the UFJF. To that end, seven technical-administrative workers in education were interviewed, among them a union representative, in order to analyze the perceptions of these workers about the process of regulation of the reduced working day, and the repercussion in their work activities and in their life off work. Interviewees were unanimous in affirming the six-hour workday as an important factor in the balance between working time and free time: from the perspective of work in the UFJF, the importance of expanding the hours of operation of the sectors to serve users; for the servers, the possibility of dedicating free time to activities considered pleasurable, such as trips and family outings, as well as the search for information and knowledge.

This study has as its object of analysis the socio-historic significance of the struggle for the workweek from 30 hours without salary reduction for Brazilian social worker. The struggle of the working class by the reduction of working hours is a historic battle that looms over the centuries, with aspects of achievements and regressions. The achievements reflect the gradual reduction of journey as a victory for workers in the capital versus labor confrontation. At the same time, if it regresses time that capital finds mechanisms to circumvent the reduction of journey through measures that camouflage the character of implicit exploration, stepping up the pace of work, for example. The social worker, while employed, assumes the position in favor of these class interests, as it is inserted into the working class and subject to the same determinations that reach. In this sense, the present study aimed to grasp the socio- historical significance of the struggle that culminated in the Law 12.317/2010, mainly through the organization of the category and the strategies of mobilization CFESS / CRESS whole process. The above Act amended the Act Regulating the Profession (Law 8.662/93) and included an article that indicates the workload of social workers for 30 hours without salary reduction. The research was qualitative type based on the analysis of literature and documents on the subject now exposed. The literature used traced a historical evolution of labor and forms of exploitation and how this was reflected in the Social Services, emphasizing the need to reduce the workload. Also documents, reports, legal opinions, information from the |Observatory of the 30 o´clock| CFESS and CRESS and judicial decisions relating to the reduction of working hours for social workers were used. Finally, the results showed this achievement as reflected not only in the gain of reduced journey for the category in question, but, in general, showed a reflection of achievement in working class as a way to stand against the heightened exploitation of labor and in favor better conditions of life and work, as well as quality of services, as proposed by the professional ethical-political project . Also, pointed out the challenges that the professional category still faces to overcome other issues that are directly linked to the reduction of the working day.
Este estudo possui como objeto de análise o significado sócio-histórico da luta pela jornada de trabalho de 30 horas semanais sem redução salarial para o assistente social brasileiro. A luta da classe trabalhadora pela redução da jornada de trabalho é uma batalha histórica que se delineia ao longo dos séculos, com aspectos de conquistas e regressões. As conquistas refletem a redução gradativa da jornada como uma vitória dos trabalhadores no confronto capital versus trabalho. Ao mesmo tempo, regride-se no momento em que o capital encontra mecanismos de burlar a redução da jornada através de medidas que camuflam o caráter de exploração implícita, com a intensificação do ritmo do trabalho, por exemplo. O assistente social, enquanto trabalhador assalariado, assume o posicionamento em favor desses interesses de classe, visto que está inserido na classe trabalhadora e sujeito às mesmas determinações que a alcançam. Nesse sentido, o estudo em questão teve como objetivo principal apreender o significado sócio-histórico do processo de luta que culminou na Lei 12.317/2010, principalmente por meio da organização da categoria e das estratégias de mobilização do conjunto CFESS/CRESS. A Lei supracitada alterou a Lei de Regulamentação da Profissão (Lei 8.662/93) e incluiu um artigo que indica a jornada de trabalho dos assistentes sociais de 30 horas semanais sem redução salarial. A pesquisa foi do tipo qualitativa, com base em análise de bibliografia e documentos sobre o tema ora exposto. A literatura utilizada traçou um resgate histórico da evolução do trabalho e suas formas de exploração e, como isso, refletiu-se no Serviço Social, enfatizando a necessidade da redução da jornada de trabalho. Foram utilizados também documentos, relatórios, pareceres jurídicos, informações do Observatório das 30 horas do CFESS e dos CRESS e decisões judiciais a respeito da redução da jornada de trabalho para assistentes sociais. Por fim, os resultados evidenciaram como essa conquista refletiu não só no ganho da redução da jornada para a categoria em questão, mas, de modo geral, demonstrou o reflexo da conquista na classe trabalhadora como forma de posicionamento contra a exploração exacerbada do trabalho e a favor de melhores condições de vida e de trabalho, bem como da qualidade dos serviços prestados, como propõe o projeto ético-político profissional. Além disso, apontaram os desafios que a categoria profissional ainda enfrenta para superar outras questões que estão diretamente ligadas à redução da jornada de trabalho.

This thesis deals with the analysis of data obtained by observing and measuring workplaces of assembly lines with a focus on the efficiency of their utilization, through selected elements of industrial engineering, which the reader can get acquainted with in the theoretical part of the thesis. In this thesis the line productivity during the shifts is analyzed, an ideal line balancing condition is defined and suggestion for changing the time of line consumption norm according to the measured line cycle time is made. According to the complex analyzes of the workplaces, suggestions are concluded and an economic appreciation of these proposals is also elaborated. The author of this thesis finds the main benefit of this work in increasing of the productivity of the analyzed line in the case of implementation of solution designs.

The theoretical portion of this work defines the issues surrounding Work-Life Balance and tools that employees can use to harmonize the two with an analysis of applications in the Czech Republic and across the European Union. The practical portion of the study analyzes employee satisfaction in real-world cases. On the basis of both components, the study offers recommendations for policy improvements to foster better Work-Life Balance.

With the changes in the work organization and the emergence of the flexible production system, especially from the 80`s, new work arrangements have appeared. One of them is the reduced hours working day in which one works a total of weekly hours smaller than the standard. Parallel to this phenomenon, the female participation in the market place has increased more noticeably from the 70`s and the conflicts between work and family have become more frequent. The reduced hours employment is pointed by some researchers as potentially favourable to the conciliation between work and family. Other researchers about the reduced hours job think it is disadvantageous to the workers because it is not their choice and it results in salary, benefit and career losses. Due to these controversies and because there isn t much research about it in Brazil, we aim to study the impact of the reduced hours work in the banks since it works with thirty-hour working day. For this reason, union trade representatives and bank workers who were employed in the countryside of São Paulo`s state were interviewed based on semi-structured outlines. Some information were collected from the RAIS (Annual List of Social Information) data base considering the period of 1994 to 2002. We found out that on the one hand the thirty-hour working day helps the bank workers to have more free time for their personal/ family activities, but most of times they don t work in this scheme by own choice and end up dealing with salary losses, less development opportunities, limited professional rise and less time to develop their activities. These aspects can limit the potential advantages of this kind of employment to the balance between work and family. We also noticed that the percentage of bank workers on thirty-hour working days in Brazil and São Paulos`s state has been decreasing and there is the predominance of women in this kind of job. Still the salary losses have been sharper for bank workers on thirty-hour working days and to the women.
Com as mudanças na organização do trabalho frente à emergência do sistema de produção flexível, especialmente a partir da década de 80, vêm se expandindo novos arranjos de trabalho, como por exemplo o trabalho de horas reduzidas, em que o número de horas trabalhadas por semana é menor que o padrão. Ao mesmo tempo, a participação feminina no mercado de trabalho se intensifica, sobretudo a partir da década de 70; por conseguinte, os conflitos entre trabalho e família tornam-se cada vez mais freqüentes. O trabalho de horas reduzidas é apontado, por alguns estudiosos, como potencialmente favorável à conciliação entre trabalho e família e, por outros, como desvantajoso para o funcionário, tanto pela imposição de horários quanto pelos prejuízos salariais, no que diz respeito aos benefícios e à ascensão na carreira. Devido a essas controvérsias e ao fato de existirem poucos estudos sobre o assunto no Brasil, objetiva-se estudar o impacto do trabalho de horas reduzidas no setor bancário, que apresenta a jornada de 30 horas semanais. Para isso, foram entrevistados, a partir de roteiros de entrevista semi-estruturados, representantes sindicais e bancários que trabalhavam no interior do estado de São Paulo. Também foram coletadas informações junto à base de dados da RAIS (Relação Anual de Informações Sociais) referentes à evolução no quadro de bancários, faixas salariais e jornada no estado de São Paulo e Brasil, considerando o período de 1994 a 2002. Encontrou-se que, por um lado, a jornada de 30 horas colabora para o bancário ter maior tempo livre para as atividades pessoais/familiares, mas, na maioria das vezes, ele é submetido a esse regime de trabalho sem possibilidade de escolha e acaba enfrentando alguns prejuízos em termos salariais, menores oportunidades de desenvolvimento, ascensão profissional limitada e menos tempo para desenvolver suas atividades, o que pode restringir as potenciais vantagens desta jornada para o equilíbrio trabalho e família. Notou-se, também, que tem ocorrido um decréscimo na porcentagem de bancários em jornada de 30 horas no Brasil e no estado de São Paulo, assim como uma predominância de mulheres nesta jornada, com perdas salariais mais acentuadas. Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability, and how this relationship is affected by economic fluctuations. In the existing literature, the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability has been extensively researched. However, the impact of economic fluctuations on the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability is sparsely researched. To the best of our knowledge, only Enqvist, Graham and Nikkinen (2014) have addressed the impact ofeconomic fluctuations on the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability. This thesis is a replication of their study in another geographical setting, another time period and studying different types of firms. Using a sample of 2,589 firm-year observations of listed Swedish firms for the years 2000-2015, this thesis conducts multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability. The findings of this thesis propose that firms can enhance profitability by improving their working capital efficiency. However, the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability does not appear to be significantly affected by economic fluctuations. This thesis contributes to the existing literature by further strengthening the understanding of the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability. In addition, it also adds to the existing literature on the relationship between working capital efficiency and firm profitability in a Swedish context.

Abstract:
Syfte med detta självständiga arbete har varit att introspektivt undersöka vilka musikaliska och kreativa aspekter som är viktigast för mig i mitt konstnärliga uttryck, och hur dessa har påverkat mig som musikproducent. I arbetet har jag också undersökt min konstnärliga arbetsprocess och vilka metoder som är mer eller mindre gynnsamma. Med en teoretisk utgångspunkt i filosofen Martin Heideggers teori om konstverkets ursprung, och musikpedagogen Fred V. Nielsens teorier om meningslager i det musikaliska objektet, har jag valt att analysera tre låtar inom mitt artistprojekt LiLL. I analysen har jag fått syn på hur viktigt det är för mig att de tre meningslagren, emotion, spänning och kinetik/kroppsligt, är sammankopplade samt hur jag använder visioner, färg och inre bilder för att förhålla mig till ett abstrakt skapande i en DAW och realisera mitt musikaliska uttryck. Insikter som denna studie har lett till är bland annat att min musikaliska process gynnas både tidsmässigt och kreativt av samarbeten. Jag har också konstaterat att jag skapar mig själv som musikproducent och artist genom att skapa musik. Min konstnärliga och tekniska förmåga utvecklas i takt med att jag skapat ett musikaliskt verk i enlighet med Heideggers teori.
The purpose of this study has been to introspectively examine which musical and creative aspects are important to me in my artistic expression, and how these aspects have affected me as a music producer. I have also examined my artistic working process and which methods are more or less favorable. With a theoretical starting point in the philosopher Martin Heidegger's theory of the origin of the work of art, and the theories of layers of meaning in the musical object by the professor in musical education Fred V. Nielsen, I have chosen to analyze three songs within my artist project - LiLL. By analyzing these songs, I have seen how important it is for me that the three layers of meaning, emotions, tension and kinetics / bodily, are connected and how I use visions and inner images to relate to the abstract creation of music in DAW:s. This study has led to insights regarding my artistic working process which are that my musical process benefits from collaborations and, in affordance with Heidegger's theory, that I create myself as a music producer by creating music at the same time as my musical ability develops by creating music.

Este trabalho discute a leglslação brasileira que atualmente garante à mulher trabalhadora o direito de amamentar seus filhos, e sua aplicação no cotidiano de patrões e trabalhadoras. Procedeu-se a uma revisão da legislação internacional e nacional e de seus antecedentes históricos. Para ilustrar a aplicação das leis brasileiras foi feito um estudo de caso em que se levantaram informações de trabalhadoras, empregadores e creches conveniadas, que permitiram identificar algumas das barreiras que enfrentam as trabalhadoras que querem amamentar. A discussão da legislação brasileira leva a concluir por sua ambiguidade e inadequação em relação àquele que seria seu objetivo precípuo: garantir que as trabalhadoras possam amamentar seus filhos enquanto trabalham. Entretanto, apesar das deficiências legais, as mulheres ainda se propõem a amamentar e algumas o conseguem, mesmo que por pouco tempo, conforme verificado no estudo de caso.
Current Brazilian legislation that guarantees an employed woman\'s right to breastfeed her children, and the daily application of this legislation is discussed. International and national legislation as well as its historical background are reviewed. To ilustrate the application of Brazilian laws a case study was carried out. Female employees, employers and day care center personnel were interviewed. This data allowed the identification af some barriers faced by wornen who want to breastfeed. The analysis of Brazilian laws shows their ambiguity and unsuitability as a mode to guarantee that employed women may nurse their babies during working hours. Nevertheless, is spite of the legal deficiencies, women are interested in breastfeeding and some manage to do so, even during a shart time, as shown in the case study.

In this Master's thesis I aimed to understand the social struggles of black women and men of working class, especially with regard to the organizational forms of struggle and resistance against discrimination in the labor market. For this purpose, I get into first chapter on the debate about particularity and universality, in order to highlight, then the forms of resistance against racism, discussing the aspect of consciousness and ideology. In the second part of the dissertation, I retrieved the history of racism, relating it to the history of class societies, in order to point out the social and historical construction of the concept of 'race' in the face of changes in modes of production that rendered capitalism globally. Therefore, the 'racial' ideas here appear as classist and racist inventions themselves to the development of bourgeois relations of production. In turn, the known 'racial question', designed decoupled and independent of the social question, emerges as an aspect of dispersion of class perspective, being necessary to question their assumptions. Among them, an essential debate is understood, that is, as the Brazilian case, about the lucubrations about 'miscegenation' and 'social mobility'. In the last chapter, therefore, I discuss the social reality and the central aspects of social struggles of black women and men of working class, some demands and perspectives of struggle, passing the post-abolition period, the context of structural crisis of capital and resumption of neoconservative policies that are proposed as means of 'combat' racism, but aimed at underpinning the co-optation of social movements around formal and insignificant guarantees. In general, the conclusions expressed the view that strengthening the resistance of those individuals is central to the struggle for human emancipation, and has the assumption to overcome the fragmentation in which they are
Nesta dissertação de mestrado, busquei compreender as lutas sociais das negras e dos negros da classe trabalhadora, especialmente no que diz respeito às formas de organização e resistência contra a discriminação no mercado de trabalho. Para tanto, adentro no primeiro capítulo o debate sobre a particularidade e a universalidade, a fim de colocar em evidência, em seguida, as formas de resistência contra o racismo, problematizando o aspecto da consciência e da ideologia. Na segunda parte da dissertação, resgatei a história do racismo, relacionando-a com a história das sociedades de classes, a fim de apontar a construção sócio-histórica da noção de 'raça' frente às transformações nos modos de produção que assentaram o capitalismo em nível global. Portanto, as ideias 'raciais' aqui aparecem como invenções classistas e racistas, próprias ao desenvolvimento das relações burguesas de produção. Por seu turno, a chamada questão 'racial', concebida de modo dissociado e autônomo da questão social, emerge como aspecto de dispersão da perspectiva de classe, sendo necessário questionar seus pressupostos. Entre eles, um debate essencial é elucidado, qual seja, quanto ao caso brasileiro, acerca das elucubrações sobre a 'mestiçagem' e a 'ascensão social'. No último capítulo, desse modo, discuto a realidade social e os aspectos centrais das lutas sociais das negras e dos negros da classe trabalhadora, algumas demandas e perspectivas de luta, perpassando o período pós-abolição, o contexto de crise estrutural do capital e a retomada de políticas neoconservadoras que se propõem como meios de „combate‟ ao racismo, mas que visam alicerçar a cooptação dos movimentos sociais em torno de garantias formais e irrisórias. A crise económica e financeira que afectou a Europa entre 2008 e 2009 revestiu ainda de maior importância as políticas de gestão do fundo de maneio. Posto isto, na seguinte dissertação analisamos o efeito que cada ciclo económico tem na relação entre a rentabilidade e as políticas de gestão do fundo de maneio, usando uma amostra de cerca de 400 empresas do Reino Unido entre 2006 e 2014. Concluímos que a relação entre o fundo de maneio e a rentabilidade é mais notória nos períodos de recessão quando comparada com os períodos de crescimento económico acentuado. Os nossos resultados mostram uma relação estatística significativa entre o working capital management e a rentabilidade das empresas, devendo assim o WCM fazer parte do planeamento financeiro de uma empresa.
The economic and financial crisis that affected Europe has brought more importance to working capital policies. On this matter, in this paper we analyze the effects of each business cycle on the working capital management (WCM) - profitability relationship using a sample of 400 UK unlisted companies during the period between 2006 and 2014. We find the impact of business cycle on the working capital - profitability to be more noticeable in economic downturns relative to economic booms. Our results show that there is a statistical significant relationship between working capital management and firms' profitability, thus active working capital management should be included in firms' financial planning.

Situated in early twenty-first century UK, I critically review the work-family reconciliation policy landscape to illuminate embedded gendered discourses and practices of caring and working. I critically examine the historical, social and cultural context of these gendered working and caring practices. Drawing on semi-structured qualitative interviews with fourteen working parents (nine mothers and five fathers), with children under 5 years old, I adopt a discourse analysis approach to consider both the performative aspects of their interview talk and the influence of wider discourses of caring and working. The thesis culminates in the development of knowledge and understanding of the intricate constitutive network of, the individual parent, the caring and working practices in which they engage, the social structure within which they live and the discourses which frame these. Drawing on large scale studies of the participation of mothers and fathers in care and employment, this thesis responds to a need for research which connects the complex relationship of caring and working discourses and practices at the macrolevel of UK society and the micro-level of individual working parents’ talk. To do this I analyse data from semi-structured interviews with fourteen working parents. In these analytical chapters, I focus on the discourse practices and discourse resources the working parents mobilised to position themselves within caring and working discourses. This thesis contributes to knowledge and understanding of gender, discourse and working parents’ talk using a sophisticated blended approach to discourse analysis. Additionally, having become a first-time mother during this study, I reflexively detail how this presented me with a unique position of knowledge, understanding and experience as a full-time working mother and researcher. To summarise, I connect contemporary UK work-family reconciliation policy, feminist scholarship and empirical discourse analysis of working parents’ interview talk to reveal ways in which discourses of working and caring are inextricably linked both in language performance in working parents’ interview talk and wider work-family reconciliation policy discourses in early twenty-first century UK.

Ao conjunto de medidas administrativas, judiciais, legais, à aplicação de atividades compensatórias, de ações educativas e de políticas de memória assumidas ao acerto de contas com a violência perpetrada por sociedades emergentes de períodos em que foram cometidas graves violações dos direitos humanos, dá-se o nome de justiça de transição. No Brasil, tais medidas apresentadas às atrocidades cometidas pelos agentes do Estado durante a ditadura civil-militar (1964-1985) levam em conta ações compensatórias, educativas e políticas de memória e verdade agenciadas por meio dos trabalhos da Comissão Especial sobre Mortos e Desaparecidos Políticos, da Comissão de Anistia e da Comissão Nacional da Verdade. Estas medidas, procurando desenvolver os fundamentos da legitimação democrática e solidificar os mecanismos de resistência ao autoritarismo, fornecem os termos ao reconhecimento das experiências de violência e condicionam a sua reparação, esclarecimento e responsabilização. Deste modo, questiona-se aqui a possibilidade das representações feitas pelas medidas de justiça de transição implementadas pelas comissões de reparação e de verdade assumirem um sentido terapêutico, condicionando a perlaboração dos traumas decorrentes das atrocidades perpetradas pelos agentes da repressão. Para isso, submete-se as narrativas produzidas pelas comissões de reparação e da verdade a uma análise que leva em conta o processo de perlaboração do trauma destas experiências no contexto no qual o Estado brasileiro implementa medidas ao reconhecimento, à reparação, à reconciliação, ao esclarecimento e à responsabilização dos crimes da repressão. Tais medidas a depender das reivindicações discursivas críticas e da apreensão coletiva de suas representações, da associação que dá possibilidade de integração e de sentido à experiência marcam o processo do trauma em sua dimensão sociocultural e canalizam à revisão e à objetivação da identidade coletiva e da memória como parte de um registro coletivo. Assente-se, contudo, que as debilidades do processo transicional brasileiro inibem o debate e o engajamento social, dificultam o reconhecimento da violência, colocam obstáculos à simbolização e à apreensão coletiva de suas representações e conduzem os seus termos ao esquecimento ou à revisão. Logo, as representações feitas pelas medidas de justiça transicional não condicionam a perlaboração social dos legados traumáticos da violência cometida pelos agentes da repressão durante a ditadura civil-militar no Brasil. Tais condições seguem dificultando que um trabalho de memória da violência da ditadura se configure em um trabalho de perlaboração dos legados de seus traumas.
Transitional justice is the set of administrative, judicial and legal measures, and the application of compensatory activities, educative actions and politics of memory adopted in order to come to terms with the violence perpetrated by societies emerging from periods in which gross human rights violations were committed. In Brazil, such measures, taken to overcome the atrocities committed by the State agents during the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985), encompass compensating and educational actions, as well as politics of memory and truth carried out through the efforts of the Special Commission for the Dead and Missed Opponents, the Amnesty Commission and the National Truth Commission. Attempting to develop the foundations of the democratic legitimation and to strengthen the mechanisms of resistance to the authoritarianism, these measures contribute to the recognition of experiences of violence and lay the groundwork for reparation, clarification and acknowledgment of such experiences. Thus, what is questioned here is if the measures of transitional justice implemented by the commissions of reparation and truth may assume a therapeutic meaning, promoting the process of working through the trauma resultant from the atrocities perpetrated by the agents of repression. The narratives produced by the commissions are submitted to an inquiry that takes into account the working through process of such traumatic experiences in the context in which the Brazilian State puts in place measures for the recognition, reparation, reconciliation, clarification and acknowledgement of the crimes of repression. Such measures depending on the critical discursive claim and on the collective apprehension of their representations, on the association that allows integration and meaning to the experience characterize the process of trauma in its social-cultural extent and convey to the critical analyses and to the conceiving of the collective identity and memory as part of a collective testimony. However, it is agreed that the deficiencies identified in the Brazilian transitional process inhibit the debate and social commitment, hinder the recognition of violence, hold back the symbolization and the collective apprehension of its representations and take their terms to oblivion or revision. Therefore, the representations produced by the measures of transitional justice do not promote the social process of working through the traumatic 11 legacies of the violence committed by the agents of repression during the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil. These conditions keep hindering that the work of memory of such violence emerges as the process of working through the legacies of its trauma.
