Abstract:
Book Summary: In this book, Jeffrey Kottler and Jon Carlson turn their well-polished therapy microscopes onto the subjects of lying, falsehood, deceit, and the loss of trust in the counseling room. What do clients lie about and why? When do therapists mislead or withhold information from their clients? What does it all mean? In their exploration of this taboo material, the authors interview and share stories from dozens of their peers from all practice areas and modalities and ranging from neophytes to established master practitioners. Their stories and reflections cast some light on this fascinating topic and will help to start a more honest dialogue about difficult subject matter.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted to evaluate perceptions of the importance of various factors that may determine the wage or salary level in jobs. Items describing various job characteristics reflecting the factors of Skill, Effort, Responsibility, Working Conditions, and Organizational characteristics were rated by 510 subjects from a variety of organizations. Results indicated that the items did not cluster into the five categories noted above. Instead, three factors were identified and labeled Job Complexity, Accountability, and Work Context. There were few gender or occupational differences in the ratings of the items. The implications of the results for the development of equitable wage and salary systems are discussed.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.B. in Writing)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Humanities, Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies, 2006.
In the December of my Senior year, my old piano teacher died. Old not in the sense of age, because he was really quite young (in general, but specifically to die), but in the sense that I took lessons from him when I was a kid and young adult (how I despise that term), and hadn't spoken with him, at least not at length, in years. Standing at his wake-only the second I'd been to in my life and the first that was more than a small room of silent people and the acrid smell of lilies-I found myself, awkwardly, taking notes. The colors of the wall, the kids running around, the food, the music, the speeches-I knew I would write a poem about it there was so much to communicate about the experience of finding Tim, learning from him, and then losing him. Too much irony and beauty, tragedy and honesty. Too much love and loss. So I took notes on a piece of paper with lyrics to "Hallelujah" on it, borrowing a pen from my high school best friend. The paper sat next to my computer for a couple of weeks, and then it sat in a pile of papers on my desk for a few more. Then a pile of papers and magazines and readings on my floor, by my desk. Then a mass of rubbage on the floor, in the corner of my room. Then covered over by clothing and other unfinished business. And though I literally buried the physical evidence, the words on the paper swarmed through my head, never coalescing into an image, a poem. Though my original thoughts were on the paper, the true words never came to me. Despite my notes, despite my unceasing emotion, I couldn't find a way to express what it all meant to me. I tried. Many times in thought, and four times on paper. Four distinct poems came out-all with repeated elements that signal to me what I find most extraordinary in the experience. Yet I was not able to sit back and say, "This is it. This is my poem for Tim. This does him justice, does me justice." I think, sometimes, the words exist in a puddle, but cannot be gathered together. And pressures such as a deadline of, say, a thesis, force us to make something of the muck. But when it comes down to it, even after writing my 4th poem on this same experience, the words just aren't there. Sometimes they just don't come together. This doesn't mean that they won't ever, and it doesn't mean that what I've written is without value.., it just means that I'm not ready to write the poem that I literally ache to get out of me. The good news is that with each attempt I find something new. With my latest (the fourth attempt), a villanelle, I found that more than the color of the walls at the wake or the kids running around the mourners, I am struck by the shear gravity of loss-what it means to unexpectedly lose someone you never thought about losing. What it means to have nothing but a memory of someone. Whether that's what I was ready to discover, or whether the strict form of the villanelle forced me to, I do not know. But I do know that, despite losing the richness of details, there is something very moving, at least to me, about the villanelle's surface-layer simplicity. Perhaps this is my signal that Tim's death meant something more symbolic to me than literal. I'm still not sure. But I am sure that I would like to share this process with you... the process, for me, of figuring out the world and my place in it, via the process of recording my experiences through poetry ...

Abstract:
This paper takes a dive into understanding if funding extra diversity initiatives at Claremont McKenna College currently spurred on by students are worth the cost to the institution. Resources like that of Claremont McKenna’s C.A.R.E. Center (Civility, Access, Resources, and Expression) and funding for representative student organizations place large pressures on the institution’s available budget and there is not much proof that they will pay off in the long-run. In this paper, financial costs for supporting diverse students on campus are aggregated and compared to the possible financial benefits that may come of their consequential use. Results show that there is a largely positive societal benefit to the use of these resources at a fraction of the cost to the institution. These findings derive from CMC cost data; however, results imply similar conclusions across secondary education institutions nationwide.

Abstract:

Similar to their colleagues throughout the world, nurses and midwives in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, welcome evidencebased practice (EBP) as a means to improve patient or client outcomes. This thesis explores the way nurses and midwives understand evidence for EBP and aims to determine whether members of these professions currently have the knowledge and skills necessary to implement evidence‐based care. Three separate studies were conducted to explore NSW nurses’ readiness for EBP. Attitudes, knowledge and skill were investigated using an EBP questionnaire returned by 383 nurses. The views of 23 nursing opinion leaders were elicited during qualitative in‐depth interviews, and their ideas on maximising the potential for future nurses to confidently engage in EBP were explored. Current approaches to teaching EBP in undergraduate nursing programs were investigated by examining documents issued by NSW nursing education providers. The results demonstrate many differences between the ways NSW nurses currently understand evidence for EBP, and a range of approaches to teaching EBP in undergraduate nursing programs. Under current conditions, nurses graduating from universities in NSW commence practice with varying levels of preparation for EBP and enter into a professional arena that is itself struggling to cope with the concepts and language of this approach to improving healthcare. v Evidence for the effectiveness of EBP is slowly accumulating and despite some small positive signs, the collective results of this thesis suggest that current educational approaches are not capable of producing the kind of results that are both necessary and desirable for the promotion of evidence‐based nursing practice in NSW. Articulating a commitment to EBP, using a common language and a consistent approach are among the recommendations made for the future promotion of EBP in nursing education.

Abstract:
This thesis offers possibilities for a new way of thinking about the subject of worth in relation to nursing. Its main purpose is to provide nurses with an opportunity to be reflective and reflexive about the many differing concepts of their own worth and that of the people with whom they work, thus facilitating the potential for new thinking and, in turn, new practices. The research arose from disturbances that emerged from three particular areas: 1) my own self worth evaluation; 2) client stories of being treated with a lack of worth by nurses; and 3) from hearing stories from colleagues about perceptions of self worth in relation to nursing identity. Within this study, I used Evocative Autoethnography, a reflexive methodology where the researcher and the researched are one, simultaneously aware of being both subject and researcher. I paid attention to how I experience myself as a nurse, how nursing appears to be viewed and how my idiosyncratic measures and displays of worth affect interactions with both others and myself. A process of rhizomatic conceptualisation ran alongside, through and around the autoethnographic process.providing a map of the territory and a frame of reference for the research. Within this Evocative Autoethnography the data are my thoughts, memories, reflections and reflexive thinking, 'collected' because of their evocative nature. They were analysed through a process of reflection and reflexion whereby the collection of data and the analysis of those data became an iterative cycle, the data becoming the data analysis becoming the data. The data are represented through multimedia concepts such as narrative prose, poetry and photographs. There is no conclusion to this process, only the point at which the data are no longer captured. Through undertaking the research, I discovered that my experience of self worth varied throughout the different cultures and different selves that I inhabit, and that this had an impact on the ways in which I interacted intra- and inter-personally. Through this iterative process of reflection and reflexion, I found I was sometimes able to influence my intra- and interactions in a helpful way, but sometimes my low self worth unhelpfully influenced the outcomes of my self/other encounters. Gaining insight into my constructions of self worth has provided me with opportunities for intra- and inter-actional changes with implications of more helpful practices. The intention of this research is to provide nurses, and in particular, mental health nurses, with an opportunity to be reflective and reflexive around the concepts of their own value and that of the people with whom they work. 'Hearing' others' stories or narratives is essentially an encounter, where the words of the other can resonate with us, providing us with a chance to not only respond to the words of the 'other' but also to our own responses, thus facilitating iterative 'echoing' or, in other words, 'thinking with the story'. In 'thinking with the story' nurses might discover something new about themselves and/or their practice, which in turn might bring about new ways of considering their self worth and that of others, thus leading to practices which place the value of both nurses and the people with whom they work at the centre of their interactions.

Abstract:
The relationships between various civic virtues and participation in community groups were explored. The present thesis was not an exhaustive integration of theories on Civic Virtue. Rather, it highlighted virtues (i.e., authenticity, moral wisdom, trust, reciprocity and tolerance) selected for their value in educating members of social capital groups toward a broader understanding of the self and others in a deliberative, pluralist democracy. This thesis relied primarily on theories from the disciplines of political philosophy and philosophy of education. Three major conclusions emerged from the present investigation. First, schools are not the only venue in which education for civic virtue occurs. Indeed, social capital groups provide a vital context for civic learning. Second, the existence of diversity within social capital groups enhances the educational potential of participating in civic life. And third, social capital groups can potentially have a socially progressive impact in a liberal, deliberative democracy.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine how and what Disney is communicating to its audience through its movie Frozen (2013). Since Disney currently is a dominant party of the movie entertainment for children they bear a great responsibility for the messages they convey through their movies, as children may be influenced by them. In this study, Frozen (2013) has been studied by a qualitative text analysis using Peter Dahlgren's approach for analyzing media text, with focus on the textual construction and the narrative dynamics of the media text (the movie). The analysis was made based on a norm-critical perspective. The analysis showed that Frozen breaks free from many of Disney's past patterns and structures and manages to create a less predictable tale. The analysis also showed the emergence of a new role; the fake villain, used precisely in order to create a less predictable tale. In differences from several earlier portrayals of the Disney Princess Frozen shows two feminine strong and independent female characters, who act on their own authority. Frozen also questions Disney's previous attitude concerning that love can arise at first sight, and that romantic love is the strongest and most valuable type of love. For the first time in forever in a Princess movie Frozen manages to portray love between family members as stronger than romantic love.

This dissertation consists of three studies exploring the relationship between personality and wealth related variables. The psychological type theory was used as the theoretical framework for the first two studies, while the doctrine of interactionism was used in the third study. All three studies utilized data from the 2010 panel of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). The first study examined the relationship between personality traits and net worth. Linear regression results identified the extroversion and conscientiousness traits as being positively associated with net worth. Furthermore, the agreeableness trait was negatively associated with net worth. The second study explored the relationship between personality preference and stock ownership. This study’s logistic regression results identified the preference for high openness and high neuroticism as significant and positively associated with stock ownership. A high agreeableness preference was significant and negatively associated with stock ownership. The focus of the third study examined how net worth and income mediated the association between personality and life satisfaction. Regression results from this study identified net worth as being a significant mediating variable in the association between the conscientiousness trait and life satisfaction levels. However, income, in addition to net worth, was also a significant mediating variable when the extroversion and neuroticism traits were used to represent personality trait variables. Results from the three studies identified significant associations between personality traits and components of net worth. These findings contribute to the financial planning field by providing useful information in regards to how mental preferences expressed outwardly though personality traits are related to wealth related variables and life satisfaction. Financial planning practitioners can apply these findings to formulate strategies to assist people grow their wealth levels.

Full text
Abstract:
We need efficient sampling methods, appropriate thresholds based on a well -defined Lygus density yield relationship, and knowledge of the most effective chemical controls available. Insecticides were evaluated for control of Lygus at 5 'at risk' grower locations, as well as at 4 other experimental sites. Application methods were different at each site according to grower practice or experimental protocol (5-20 GPA; by ground, air, or electrostatically-assisted ground sprayers). Evaluations were made based on the number of Lygus per 100 sweeps. Orthene®, Vydate® or to a lesser degree, Monitor® used alone and at high rates appeared to perform adequately at all sites. Both rates of Regent™, a new chemistry under development by Rhône- Poulenc, provided excellent levels of control comparable to Orthene in a high density test. In this same test, none of the experimental and registered pyrethmids provided adequate control when used alone. Thiodan®, when mixed with Mustang®, provided some level of control. Over all tests measured for yield, a positive net return was possible with no more than 2 sprays of solo materials which yielded between 0.3 and 0.5 bales/A more than untreated comparisons or between $51-130/A net return. Also, at one site where yields were in excess of 4.2 bales/A, optimum planting and fruit-set prior to heavy Lygus pressures and monsoon-associated heat stress was an important cultural tactic for avoiding losses to Lygus - the check yielded over 3.7 bales /A! As seen at grower sites and confirmed in experimental studies, solo compounds, at appropriate rates, performed as well or better than any combination tested. And, mixtures at this time do not appear to provide any additive, synergistic or economic benefits in the control of Lygus. Combinations, unless indicated by another pest problem (e.g., whiteflies), are not "worth it," and needlessly expose the grower to larger input costs, "empty" applications, and higher risks of resistance, pest resurgence, secondary pest outbreaks, and phytotoxic effects by insecticides.

Kikuchi, Colin P. "Three Perspectives on the Worth of Hydrologic Data." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/581328.

Full text
Abstract:
Data collection is an integral part of hydrologic investigations; yet, hydrologic data collection is costly, particularly in subsurface environments. Consequently, it is critical to target data collection efforts toward prospective data sets that will best address the questions at hand, in the context of the study. Experimental and monitoring network designs that have been carefully planned with a specific objective in mind are likely to yield information-rich data that can address critical questions of concern. Conversely, data collection undertaken without careful planning may yield datasets that contain little information relevant to the questions of concern. This dissertation research develops and presents approaches that can be used to support careful planning of hydrologic experiments and monitoring networks. Specifically, three general types of problems are considered. Under the first problem type, the objective of the hydrologic investigation is to discriminate among rival conceptual models, or among rival predictive groupings. A Bayesian methodology is presented that can be used to rank prospective datasets during the planning phases of a hydrologic investigation. Under the second problem type, the objective is to quantify the impact of existing data on reductions in parameter uncertainty. An inverse modeling approach is presented to quantify the impact of existing data on parameter uncertainty when the hydrogeologic conceptual model is uncertain. The third and final problem type focuses on data collection in a water resource management context, with the specific goal to maximize profits without imposing adverse environmental impacts. A risk-based decision support framework is developed using detailed hydrologic simulation to evaluate probabilistic constraints. This enables direct calculation of the profit gains associated with prospective reductions in system parameter uncertainty, and the possible environmental impacts of unknown bias in the system parameters.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes why people volunteer in two counties of East Tennessee. The study describes the concept of volunteering and its positive impact upon society on a regional and national level. The characteristics of people who volunteer, why people choose to volunteer, and the significance of their volunteering were assessed through a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire was administered in Carter County (Elizabethton) and Washington County (Johnson City) Tennessee to 13 charitable and non-charitable agencies that utilize volunteers aged 18 years and over. Out of 243 survey questionnaires distributed in Elizabethton and Johnson City, Tennessee, 124 individuals responded. Data collected in the areas were analyzed to determine how the region related to national profiles of those who volunteer. The data collected revealed reasons why people in this section of the mountains of East Tennessee volunteer and helped identify the characteristics of those who volunteer.

Brown, Susan M. "Debt and Negative Net Worth Among Near Retirees." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/941.

Full text
Abstract:
Going into retirement, near-retirees are looking at increased debt levels, which can offset any asset accumulations and reduce retirement income. By using data from the 2008 Health and Retirement Study (HRS), this study examines the debt and negative net worth of near-retirees. This study further investigates what factors are associated with the likelihood of holding consumer debt, holding mortgage debt, and holding home equity debt over holding no debt, and what factors are associated with the likelihood of holding negative net worth over holding a high level of net worth among near-retirees. The study sample includes 3,745 individuals between the ages of 51 and 64. The results of the multinomial logistic regression analysis indicate that, all else being equal, human capital factors such as education, physical health problems, and depression symptoms play a significant role in predicting the likelihood of holding debt and negative net worth. In particular, education is positively associated with the likelihood of holding consumer, mortgage, and home equity debt over holding no debt, while it is negatively associated with the likelihood of having negative net worth over having a high level of net worth. Among the socioeconomic characteristics that influence the likelihood of near-retirees holding debt and negative net worth are household income, working in the labor force, and race. In particular, household income positively influences the likelihood of holding mortgage debt over holding no mortgage debt as well as the likelihood of holding home equity debt over holding no home equity debt. However, household income negatively influences the likelihood of having negative net worth over having a higher level of net worth. The findings of this study could help financial educators, financial planners, and policymakers understand the differences in human capital and socioeconomic characteristics of near-retirees who hold some levels of debt over no debt and who hold no net worth or a lower level of net worth over a higher level of net worth. This study concludes that it is important for professionals, consumer educators, and financial planners to provide those who hold higher levels of debt and lower levels of net worth with financial literacy education; therefore, these individuals might be able to attain economic well-being in retirement.

Alvarez, Fabiola. "The Scottish national screen agency : justifications of worth." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/5020.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of the former national screen agency in Scotland, which was in charge of distributing public funds for screen activity between 1997 and 2010. It examines how external factors such as cultural policy and internal factors such as individual approaches to film funding, affected the agency's perception and remit. The study draws on the institutional logics perspective (Thornton et al., 2012) to frame the interplay of two competing imperatives, one commercial, one creative, affecting the creative industries in Scotland and Scottish Screen's activities more specifically. However, it goes beyond this duality by examining more nuanced factors which significantly affected the organisation's trajectory and remit. Taking into account the predominant logic(s) throughout Scottish Screen's history and focusing on organisational responses during moments of transition or conflict, I use the analytical framework developed by Boltanski and Thévenot in On Justification (2006) to examine criticisms, justifications, and attempts at compromising expressed through official and non-official channels. The thesis outlines how opinions and decisions stemming from disparate views of what is “worthy” affected the agency's activity and funding decisions, as well as the dialogue with its stakeholders. The conclusions extracted from my findings inform existing literature on responses to plurality and challenge some claims made by institutional logic scholars: the first conclusion is that lack of conflict between logics does not necessarily translate into lack organisational conflict, as the latter often derives from different orders of worth which override the commercial-creative logic divide and are incompatible amongst themselves. The second conclusion, related to the first one, is that stability may be enhanced (at least temporarily) in a professional environment dominated by a plurality of logics as long as there is compatibility amongst the orders of worth set forth in pursuit of organisational goals. A third conclusion is related to the examination of some contributions to the orders of worth perspective and the study of plurality and instability in organisational practices, notably Boltanski and Chiapello's (2007) depiction of a seventh world of worth called the ‘projective city' (underpinned by the higher value of activity aimed at creating or maintaining ever-changing networks), and David Stark's (2009) study of plurality and ambiguity management in organisations. My findings suggest that organisational models based on pervasive, horizontal networks capable of transgressing traditional hierarchical structures were never fully deployed in Scottish Screen - traces of these practices are identified, but, overall, actors defended more traditional organisational scripts.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT ARE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WORTH SAVING? IF SO, BY WHOM? by Philip Kovacs While there is a loose coalition of individuals and organizations attacking the institution of public schools, there does not appear to be a coordinated defense of public schools. Without a coordinated defense of the institution, public schools will arguably 1) grow increasingly regulated and/or 2) be shut down altogether. Given that progressive scholars believe schools should exist to maintain a pluralistic and participatory democracy, should 1) or 2) continue, the progressive goal of democracy through education becomes increasingly removed from possibility. The failure of progressive educational reformers to enter the same spheres as think tank and foundation-housed neointellectuals is partially to blame for the increasingly corporatist ideology governing public school reform. While scholars such as Henry Giroux call for “new articulations,” new languages, and new theories, I believe the problem lies not in the message but in the failure of progressives to promote their ideas in various public, private, and legislative spheres. In order to defend public schools as sites for the generation and maintenance of a participatory democratic social order, this research investigates the possibility that progressive educational reformers, acting as prophetic pragmatists, can save public education by acting publicly and politically to check, counter, and silence the anti-democratic educational initiatives forwarded by neoconservative and neoliberal educational reformers.

The asset allocations of private real estate in the investment portfolios of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) indicate that HNWIs' portfolio returns are not at optimum levels on a risk-adjusted basis. More specifically, utilizing Modem Portfolio Theory, existing allocations to private real estate should, arguably be increased by as much as twice its present allocation. This deficiency is due to insufficient conduits and products available at financial institutions for HNWIs. This mismatch has created a supply and demand problem of HNWI demand for and financial institutions' supply of private real estate assets. The current HNWIs allocations were examined using the "Survey of Consumer Finances" (Federal Reserve, 1998). HNWIs capable of private real estate investment were investors whose net worth was $25 million and above. The HNWI allocations and more than twenty years of historical investment returns and volatilities for financial assets and real estate, were the foundation for analyzing the variance between actual and optimum portfolio allocations of private real estate. This comparison highlighted how the entire HNWI segment could double its current real estate allocation to meet the optimal portfolio level. Along with this real estate allocation deficiency, the HNWI segment has grown substantially over the last 10 years. Since this is a growing segment and a potential source of capital for the real estate industry, this thesis specifically identifies the real estate asset allocation inefficiencies, recommends optimum real estate asset allocations, and lists the alternatives and characteristics of investment conduits and products for increased investment in private real estate by HNWIs.

Mitchell, Laura. "Doing dignity : a performance view of worth in organisations." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.654548.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the matter of dignity in organisations. Contending that existing work has conceived of dignity as an object, and thus has difficulty in finding dignity in empirical situations, I instead argue for a view of dignity as a performance. Thus the work presents an approach to dignity which rather than engaging with an ontology of being, examines how dignity may be conceived from an ontology of becoming (Weick 1979). Through membership and performance, it has been suggested that dignity may be understood as an ongoing achievement of persons in organisations. In order to investigate how this is done, qualitative research is undertaken in three different empirical sites. These three sites each provide a different perspective on membership, as the researcher progresses from non-participant observer in two companies, through to participating performing member in the last case of a predominantly volunteer-run performance based organisation. In investigating membership and performance, the thesis employs the work of Rolland Munro (1996; 1999) and Erving Goffman (1959; 1967) to examine the doing of dignity in organisations, identifying that the ambiguous nature of dignity lies in the mechanics of how such performances are challenged or affirmed. Finally, the doing of dignity as a performed accomplishment is identified as a process involving the use of various resources, and the organisation is shown as just one source of those.

Storms-Houston, Tyene. "The role of job evaluation in the comparable worth controversy." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1989. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1537.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study is to examine issues raised against the use of evaluation as a mechanism for ensuring the attainment of the objective of comparable worth. The significance of this study lies in the fact that wage discrimination against female dominated jobs has been practiced in this country for a long time. Such discrimination contradicts the egalitarian posture that America attempts to project on the rest of the world. Thus, any efforts aimed at removing this sore spot on the American body politic is not only significant but also a step in the right direction. The major findings of this study are that critics of job evaluation raise issues relevant to its reliability, validity, choice of factors, weighting of factors and job analysis. In spite of these criticisms, the advocates of comparable worth maintained that job evaluation is still useful to assess job content and worth. This study principally relied on secondary data such as books, journals, and reports.

Abstract:
This study of radio news stations adds to the field of Twitter research into broadcasters' use of this social media microblogging platform; previous research has predominantly focused on television. This case study, based on a survey with numerous open-ended questions completed in face-to-face interviews, begins to fill in data on how Twitter is being used in major market radio station newsrooms. Limited in scope, this exploratory study used answers from seven members of two radio newsrooms in trying to find out if there were stated goals for tweets; if separate, unique content was being tweeted or was content tied to the stations' on-air product; how tweets seek to increase station listenership and/or increase station website traffic; what were the most frequently tweeted topics; what hyperlinks were included in tweets for internal or external web content; and were tweets personal and/or opinionated, or kept more professional with just factual material. From a strategic management theory standpoint, there is neither a stated plan nor goals sought with these newsrooms' use of Twitter. Unique tweet content includes sending out photos which add visuals to the pictureless world of radio news and live-tweeting of ongoing news events, while complementary content is promotional to push audience members to on-air or website products. There are no analytics in place to try to determine whether the stations' listenership or web traffic increases based on tweets. Promotional teases of upcoming on-air guest interviews or news content and/or web content are the most frequently tweeted topics. Hashtags rather than hyperlinks are more often included in the stations' tweets. News personnel stay away from expressing opinions, or being too personal in tweets, but remain more objective and professional by sticking to facts which is in step with the traditional role of journalists.

Abstract:
This work presents a new methodology to evaluate reliability índices in composite generation and transmission systems. Through this new approach is possible to achieve an accurate estimate of the reliability worth of power systems. The modeling flexibility and simulation efficiency are basic features of the proposed approach. Moreover, it is introduced a new reliability index called LOLC (loss of load cost), which provides a complete information about the economic impact of customer supply interruptions. Bearing in mind this objective was developed a new developed a new simulation model, named pseudo-sequential, based on the nonsequencial sampling to locate the failed states and on the chronological simulation of only the sub- sequences associated with these failed states. In case studies with the IEEE Modified Reliability Test System (MRST) and the Brazilian southeastern system, the pseudo- sequential simulation has shown about twenty-five to thirty times faster than the convential sequential Monte Carlo simulation, based on the relative uncertainly of LOLC estimate. In order to improve the efficacy of the new approach, it is examined the application of one variance reduction technique named importance sampling. The results prove the ability of increasing the speedup through trivial sampling strategies. Another alternative to asses the reliability worth is markovian pseudo-sequential simulation. In this approach, the system is modeled by a homogeneus. Markov process and the state transition method is applied to establish the supply interruptions. The flexibility and accuracy of the original pseudo-sequential method are partially retained. Finally, it is used a customized variance reduction scheme to test pseudo-sequential simulation in equivalent systems.

Abstract:
In this paper we first show that the gains achievable by integrating pricing and inventory control are usually small for classical demand functions. We then introduce reference price models and demonstrate that for this class of demand functions the benefits of integration with inventory control are substantially increased due to the price dynamics. We also provide some analytical results for this more complex model. We thus conclude that integrated pricing/inventory models could repeat the success of revenue management in practice if reference price effects are included in the demand model and the properties of this new model are better understood. Abstract:
From 1930 to 1955, Amon Carter, publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, exerted his power to create modern Fort Worth. Carter used his stature as the publisher of the city's major newspaper to build a modern city out of this livestock center. Between 1930 and 1955, Carter lobbied successfully for New Deal funds for Fort Worth, persuaded Consolidated Aircraft to build an airplane plant in the city, and convinced Burlington Railways to stay in the city. He also labored unsuccessfully to have the Trinity River Canal built and to secure a General Motors plant for Fort Worth. These efforts demonstrate that Carter was indeed the founder of modern Fort Worth.

As a museum educator who embraces social education and reflects on the postmodern condition, I found working within a traditional museum context to present challenges. As a result, I conducted an action research project focusing on ways to improve my own practice and affect change based on my engagement with visual culture discourse and the docents I teach. Having chosen action research, I implemented various teaching approaches and collected data over the course of several months. These data collection methods included interviews, museum documents, observational notes, recorded teaching practice, and daily journal entries. Narrative analysis was then used to interpret the collected data, specifically focusing how participants, including myself, make sense out of our experiences and how we value them.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the relative association of socioeconomic, minority group and housing characteristics of census tracts with the racial composition of residential areas within one southwestern city between 1950 and 1980. The unit of analysis was the census tract; the data were taken from the U.S. Census of Population and Housing 1950-1980 for the Fort Worth, Texas SMSAs. The Index of Dissimilarity compared racial segregation in the Fort Worth urbanized area for blacks with all others (1950-1980) and for Spanish and non-black minorities with all others (1960-1980). The data show little change in the extent of residential segregation over 30 years. The multiple regression showed that the degree of segregation in census tracts became increasingly predictable based on past minority concentration in the same neighborhood. Lagged social status and minority group variables significantly predicted the percent of the population that was black or Spanish in census tracts ten years later. Beta weights for percent black or percent Spanish were always the strongest in each tract regression and largely determined the level of segregation that existed in tracts ten years later. This paper asserts that social status characteristics must approach more equal levels between minority and majority groups before integrated neighborhoods can reasonably be expected. Yet many of these variables are still highly associated with black and Spanish areas. Rising income and improved housing in black census tracts give some basis for believing that in time these variables will narrow sufficiently to give more choice in residential housing. Although Spanish tracts are only about 65% as segregated as black census tracts and although the association of the variables with Spanish residential areas are never as strong as with black census tracts, still, with increased Spanish immigration in recent years and the downward trend found in social status factors within areas of Spanish concentration, Spanish residential areas may face increasing risks of greater segregation. It is recommended that emphasis on educational attainment and occupational training be continued, possibly augmented with civic programs designed to facilitate movement away from dynamic clustering.

Full text
Abstract:
World War II represented a watershed event in the history of the United States and affected political, economic, and social systems at all levels. In particular, the war unleashed forces that caused rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization in two regions, the South and the West. This study examines one community's place in that experience as those forces forever altered the city of Fort Worth, Texas. Prior to World War II, Fort Worth's economy revolved around cattle, food-processing, and oil, industries that depended largely on an unskilled labor force. The Fort Worth Stockyards laid claim to the single largest workforce in the city, while manufacturing lagged far behind. After an aggressive campaign waged by city civic and business leaders, Fort Worth acquired a Consolidated Aircraft Corporation assembly plant in early 1941. The presence of that facility initiated an economic transformation that resulted in a major shift away from agriculture and toward manufacturing, particularly the aviation industry. The Consolidated plant sparked industrial development, triggered an influx of newcomers, trained a skilled workforce, and stimulated an economic recovery that lifted the city out of the Depression-era doldrums. When hostilities ended and the United States entered the Cold War period, Consolidated and the adjacent airfield, designated as Carswell Air Force Base in 1948, provided the framework for Fort Worth's postwar industrial expansion and economic prosperity. Fort Worth emerged from World War II as one of the nation's premier aviation production centers and as a linchpin of America's defensive strategy. In the process, it became what historian Roger Lotchin has labeled a "martial metropolis." Ties developed during the war between the city and the military extended into the postwar period and beyond as Fort Worth became part of the growing military/industrial complex. From stockyards to defense plants, World War II transformed Fort Worth from agriculture and mavericks to manufacturing and the military.
