Abstract:
The discussion in this paper is intended to describe how Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) views Timor Leste during the period of Portuguese occupation, Indonesia’s presence, until the present-day conditions. Using some van Dijk’s models of CDA to examine the statements to represent its history in some editorials published by ABC and BBC news resources, the analysis was carried out at the levels of selected statements with regard to the linguistic features of lexical choices, nominalization, passivization, and overcompleteness. The results of the analysis show that the statements constructed by ABC and BBC’s news editorials as the news discourse about the history of Timor Leste in such relations are discursively biased in terms of CDA. With various differences in terms of the linguistic features, the result also in line with the view that both ABC and BBC’s statements are mostly dichotomizing Portuguese into ‘Us’ while Indonesia into ‘Them’ in terms of van Dijk’s ‘ideological square’.

Abstract:
A content analysis of the ABC News Online website during the 2000 Olympic Games reveals a select few female role models were available to young audiences. One female athlete was ‘news-privileged’. Cathy Freeman's exposure came at the expense of her Australian team mates, especially those women who won medals in team sports. While the results indicate an improvement in both the extent of women's sports coverage and the range of sports covered, stereotypical descriptions often characterised adult females as emotionally vulnerable, dependent adolescents. Male athletes were never infantilised and were far less likely to be described in emotive terms.

Abstract:
Two decades after Pierre Bourdieu published On Television and Journalism chronicling the decline of French public broadcasting and serious news, Australia’s national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), is in the throes of a similar decline. Besieged by a combination of funding cuts, allegations of political interference, pressure from the commercial media sector, nepotism and legislative frameworks at both federal and state levels that have sent a chill through Australian journalism, the ABC is facing challenging times. Through long-form interviews with journalists and senior bureau figures from the ABC Brisbane Bureau, this study seeks to gauge the extent to which the landscape for conducting public interest journalism in Australia has changed since 2018 and what the future of the ABC may look like.

Abstract:
This article revisits historical rivalries between established and emerging media, namely the press and broadcasting, during the first half of the twentieth century. To this end, the author constructs a dialogue between Neville Petersen's broadcasting research and his own press research over a similar period. In his major work, News Not Views: The ABC, Press and Politics (1932–1947), Petersen (1993) elaborates in detail the ongoing constraints imposed by Australian newspaper proprietors on the fledgling Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) in their ultimately unsuccessful struggle to restrict its news supply and influence. Drawing on subsequent press research based on international forums, the author revisits this rivalry, particularly Petersen's thesis that Australian press proprietors exercised disproportionate influence over the national broadcaster when compared with other English-speaking countries, such as Britain and Canada.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sheds light on the ways in which audiences are made through the relationships between organisational policy and news production practice. It explores the relationships between news practitioners perceptions and definitions of audiences, production, and organisational policies, using the radio news service of the Australian national public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In so doing, the thesis demonstrates that production, in its institutional context, is a crucial site for the creation of audiences in the study of news journalism. In the process, it illuminates the role of public service broadcasting, in a world of digital media The conceptual framework utilises a new approach to framing analysis. Framing has been used to examine the news "agenda" and to identify the salient aspects of news events. This thesis demonstrates ways in which framing can be used to research important processes in news production at different levels, from policy level to that of professional culture, and generate insights to the relationship between them. The accumulated evidence of the bulletin analysis - using structural and rhetorical frames of news - field observation and interviews, shows that a specific and coherent audience can be constructed as a result of newsroom work practices in combination with organisational policies. The thesis has increased knowledge and understanding both of how news workers create images of their audiences and what the institutional factors are that influence the manufacture of audiences as they appear in the text of news bulletins.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to inquire if there are dispositions of any type. of newscast carried by ABC News about Nigeria and if these newscasts are positively or negatively inclined. The analysis quantified and verified that while the broadcast content of ABC News presentations on Nigeria have been objectively covered, the newscasts have taken stereotypical patterns. This, thereby establishes the need for ABC News, being an example of American network news, to diversify and cover stories of social and human interest in Nigeria and other Third World countries. The study concludes that a true maxim of news coverage is needed as a guide to unbiased, unslanted or cliched news presentations.

Abstract:
Autism has been declared an urgent public health concern by the U.S. government and an epidemic by some advocacy groups. Determining autism’s diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and causes have been challenging. It is important to examine how the U.S. media have contributed to the public’s understanding of autism. Previous research found that British media coverage of the theory that vaccines cause autism was shown to contribute to the decline of vaccination rates in Britain (Lewis & Speers, 2003). This study examined U.S. television news media coverage using an agenda-setting theory and media framing perspective. A content analysis was conducted of national television evening news broadcasts airing on ABC, CBS, and NBC from 1994, when autism was first recognized as a spectrum disorder through April 2010, the time of this study. Specifically, this study examined the saliency of autism stories and how autism was framed in terms of prevalence and causes.

Full text
Abstract:

Automation in manufacturing has come far by using industrial robots. However, industrial robots require tremendous efforts in static calibration due to their lack of senses. Force and vision are the most useful sensing capabilities for a robot system operating in an unknown or uncalibrated environment [4]and by integrating sensors in real-time with industrial robot controllers, dynamic processes need far less calibration which leads to reduced lead time. By using robot systems which are more dynamic and can perform complex tasks with simple instructions, the production efficiency will rise and hence also the profit for companies using them.

Although much research has been presented within the research community, current industrial robot systems have very limited support for external sensor feedback, and the state-of-the-art robots today have generally no feedback loop that can handle external force- or position controlled feedback. Where it exists, feedback at the rate of 10 Hz is considered to berare and is far from real-time control.

A new system where the feedback control can be possible within a real-time behavior, developed at Lund Institute of Technology, has been implemented and deployed at Linköping Institute of Technology.

The new system for rapid feedback control is a highly complex system, possible to install in existing robot cells, and enables real-time (250 Hz) sensor feedback to the robot controller. However, the system is not yet fully developed, and a lot of issues need to be considered before it can reach the market in other than specific applications.

The implementation and deployment of the new interface at LiTH shows that the potential for this system is large, since it makes production with robots exceedingly flexible and dynamic, and the fact that the system works with real- time feedback makes industrial robots more useful in tasks for manufacturing.

The object of this work is the action of metallurgist Union Trade from ABC in the decade of 1990, period of the productive restructuring of its several new dimensions in the work world. The absorption by the state of the union trade movement and the Partido dos Trabalhadores and the objective relations that defined the capitalism, through the decade of 1990, characterized the peculiar way assumed by the work in the brazilian society. In this way, the brazilian neoliberalism got a different manner and content and revealed more an engagement of the state than a distance of the so called market power . With intense participation, the government of Fernando Collor de Mello and Fernando Henrique Cardoso implemented the new basis for the productive restructuring of the capital. This engagement Capital x State had as main content to the social organization of the production, the principles politics and the credits for the capital expansion and, fundamentally a new kind of capture of the work subjectivity. The Metallurgist Union Trade from 1990 ABC, so combative in the decade of 1980 and a deep class character abandon this profile and assume a new corporative sector manner dominating the Union Trade action propositive. The union trade neocorporatist , of propositive nature is assumed, fundamentally, after the IV (4 th) Congress of Central Única dos Trabalhadores in 1991 and developed by the Metallurgist Union Trade from ABC, main union trade of cutistas basis, and of the Automotive Sector Board (1992-1994). The new assumed abandoned this profile the practices to the basis and assume the neocorporatist and adherence to the negotiation with the government s companies. The substantive criticism to the political and economical order is replaced by negotiated content. The losses are absolutely bigger than the gains for the working class. The indices of unemployment of the period don t leave doubts about the role of the restructuring and about the tiny union trade influence in the changes in the sector and in the directions of economy. In our point of view, it is clear that the decade of 1990 was a period of several dimensions of the restructuring and that the Metallurgist Union Trade actions from ABC, following the guidelines of the Central Única dos Trabalhadores, assumed the propositivo profile, understood by us, a adherence to the state driven by the politicist bias

This thesis examines four groups of lay catholic communities on the greater ABC region to wich we denominate Catholic Community alternative arrangements. They are extra parochial communities formed by a founder, autonomously organised with regard to a moral system, cultual, symbolical, and of a network relationship. Attuned to contemporary modernity and beneath supervision of the local clergy, these catholic arrangements are characterized by a ruled and hierarquical life, focused on serving a specific target audience, recovering, adjusting, combining religious Catholic doctrine to glossolalia practice, deliverance and soul healing. The organizational structures of the arrangements, the socio-religious antecedents of its members also their ability to adapt forward to social surroundings, were analyzed through an ethnographic research. It was found that these Catholic arrangements are places that allow their leaders to exercise at best autonomy its catholicity in a more intimate and spiratualized character. We understand t hat these Catholic arrangements composse certain type of Catholicisms consultancy that assist its clients in the inner healing, at the same time that, devices or helpers to Catholic Apostolic Church, in order to keep it strategically in contemporary modernity. The elements that give cohesion and symbolic strength to this communities were analyzed with Bourdieus and Durkheimians categories. Elements such as websites, badges and saints bastions, have become important referential that guide the daily life of the Catholics arrangements.

An essential factor in widespread and successful implementation of the ABC lies in the reliable connections between precast units. In this study, the distinction of seismic performance between the high and short precast reinforced concrete pier columns with a new column-to-footing (or cap beam) connection filled with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) were experimentally investigated through the quasi-static testing. Based on the observations of test results, although the phenomena of sliding and uplifting around the joints were obvious, the failure modes of high and short columns were the flexural failure and the shear failure on the non-joint zone, respectively. Moreover, the damage process, the ductility capacity, the resilience behavior and the hysteresis energy response of the two large-scaled prefabricated piers were described and discussed.</p>

Abstract:
Human biopsy (30), surgical (50) and autopsy (14) specimens of different embryonic origin (skin, blood vessel, kidney, lymph nodes, prostate, lung, liver, and intestine) were stained by the avidin-biotin complex immunoperoxidase technique (ABC-IP) with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). MAb T2G1 (recognizes 315-42 and detects fibrin II in tissues), MAb I8C6 (recognizes BS1-42 and indicates fibrinogen and fibrin I), MAb GC4 (specific for fragments D and D-D), and a polyclonal antiserum for fibrinogen. The method can be applied to frozen or Boilin’s fixed paraffin embedded tissues with good preservation of morphology and high sensitivity at the light microscopy level. The results were compared with conventional histochemical stains currently used in surgical pathology to demonstrate fibrin deposits in tissues. These stains are based on the acidophilic properties of fibrin (Fraser-Lendrum for “more recent” and Mallory’s PTAH for “older” fibrin). ABC-IP staining with MAb T2G1 clearly detected fibrin in areas where Lendrum and PTAH failed to reveal fibrin deposits, e.g., in the intercellular and pericellular matrix, as well as in areas where staining occurred with conventional techniques, indicating greater sensitivity of the ABC-IP method. Fibrin was specifically detected in strands or clumps in some areas of inflammation and granulation tissue and seemed to be associated with platelets and macrophages. Moreover, ABC-IP with MAb I8C6 and MAb GC4 permits the distinction between fibrinogen or fibrin I, and D and D dimer which are poorly reactive with the Lendrum and PTAH methods. The polyclonal antiserum for fibrinogen showed reactivity with all the material stained with the MAbs and with some additional areas due to the epitopes of fibrinogen and fibrin not detected by the monoclonals. The ABC-IP technique with MAbs allows specific demonstration of fibrin deposits in tissues. Moreover, these results indicate that this method facilitates the correlation of the morphologic appearance of fibrinogen) -related deposits in tissues with their molecular form and will be useful to elucidate the role of fibrin in diseases such as atherosclerosis, kidney disease, and tumors.

Abstract:
A number of sites around the United States have used activated carbon (AC) amendments to remedy contaminated sediments. Variation in site-specific characteristics likely influences the long-term fate and efficacy of AC treatment. The long-term effectiveness of an AC amendment to sediment is largely unknown, as the field performance has not been monitored for more than three years. As a consequence, the focus of this research effort was to evaluate AC’s long-term (6–10 yr) performance. These assessments were performed at two pilot-scale demonstration sites, Grasse River, Massena, New York and Canal Creek, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Aberdeen, Maryland, representing two distinct physical environments. Sediment core samples were collected after 6 and 10 years of remedy implementation at APG and Grasse River, respectively. Core samples were collected and sectioned to determine the current vertical distribution and persistence of AC in the field. The concentration profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediment pore water with depth was measured using passive sampling. Sediment samples from the untreated and AC-treated zones were also assessed for bioaccumulation in benthic organisms. The data collected enabled comparison of AC distribution, PCB concentrations, and bioaccumulation measured over the short- and long-term (months to years).
