Abstract:
The thesis deals with minimizing of the inventory of finished products in the ceramic industry. To reduce inventory the ABC and XYZ analysis was used for the sorting of products into the groups and particular ways were suggested to reduce inventories of finished products. In the theoretical part are described the theoretical assumptions for inventory management issues such as costs, demand, or different methods of inventory management. Then the technological process of production of ceramic tiles follows. In the practical part, entire knowledge of the theory is applied to the problems of ceramic tiles production in LASSELSBERGER, Ltd. It concerns specifically about 1284 products analyzed by using ABC and XYZ methods. Proposed methods and their effect on saving of storage space (storage space saving) were compared afterwards. The result of the work is a comprehensive product portfolio analysis of LASSELSBERGER, Ltd. indicating to company management, which economy measures will ensure the highest costs saving.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on some ways of optimizing logistic processes. In the theoretical part are described important terms which are going to introduce the reader to the processes, their analysis followed by optimization. Then there is the space devoted to the metrics by which processes are possible to be evaluated and managed. The practical part offers case study. It contains introduction to the organization, mapping of their processes, analysis of warehouse processes, and their subsequent evaluation and proposed improvements. Suggested improvements were made in the spirit of Lean Management. As another proposal to improve warehouse processes an analysis of inventories have been made and evaluated, which resulted in proposal for new layout of the warehouse, which will encourage further optimization.

Abstract:
Background: Nordic E-commerce group (NECG) consists of affiliated companies NordicInk, NordicFeel and PetsOnline. Three different types of companies in one warehouse area contribute to a wide range of products held in inventory. NECG’s problem derives in the fact that the company’s warehouse layout needs to handle a larger volume of sales, but is not capable of doing this in a structured way today. This matter of fact has led to new thoughts concerning improvements of the layout. The warehouse layout referred to in this thesis includes input and output doors, receiving and outgoing areas, material handling equipment and the placement of articles in inventory. Although article placement is per definition a part of warehouse layout, it will be given extra emphasis in this thesis as it is one of NECG’s most critical issues.   Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify NECG’s current warehouse layout and article placement and the problems associated with it, as well as to provide suggested actions for improvements. This is to be done so NECG can better utilize the warehouse space, and thus prepare the warehouse to handle a larger volume of sales.   Methodology: Qualitative and quantitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations at NECG, as well as through excel files containing transactional data for NordicInk’s products. Through a non-probability, snowball selection the respondents were chosen. There have not been any requirements from NECG regarding confidentiality in terms of the warehouse layout.   Findings: There are a number of suggested actions that NECG may apply to improve the warehouse layout; two separate doors for incoming and outgoing deliveries, one designated receiving and one outgoing area, and a flow shop layout combined with a U-form layout would be the most beneficial for NECG’s warehouse. Furthermore, NECG needs a more consistent article placement and it is recommended for the company to apply a floating location system to its high-picked products and a fixed location system for its low-picked products. This will make NECG take better use of the available space and a more structured warehouse will be achieved.
Bakgrund: Nordic E-commerce Group (NECG) består utav dotterbolagen NordicInk, NordicFeel och PetsOnline. Då lagret består utav tre olika företag finns ett brett utbud av produkter. NECG:s problem härrör i att företagets lagerlayout inte har följt med i företagets utveckling. För att kunna hantera en större försäljningsvolym, behöver lagerområdet kunna hantera nuvarande och framtida lagervolymer, men är inte kapabel till att göra detta på ett strukturerat sätt i dag. Detta har lett till nya tankar om förbättringsförslag kring lagerlayout. I detta examensarbete avser lagerlayout ingående och utgående portar, inkommande och utgående lagringsområden, materialhanteringsutrustning och artikelplacering i lager. Även om artikeln placering är per definition en del av lagerlayout, kommer det att ges extra fokus i detta examensarbete eftersom det är en av NECG mest kritiska frågor.   Syfte: Syftet med detta examensarbete är att identifiera NECG nuvarande lagerlayout och artikel placering samt vilka eventuella problem som finns, för att kunna ge förslag på förbättringar. Este trabalho tem como principal objetivo a exploração de métodos de classificação de artigos, de modo a auxiliar o planeamento e controlo de produção da Empresa X e apresentar uma proposta de classificação de produtos. Esta classificação foi elaborada a partir da associação dos produtos considerados mais importantes à estratégia de produção Make-to-Stock, permitindo que estes tenham prazos de entrega mais reduzidos, e os restantes associar à estratégia Make-to-Order, que permite a sua personalização.Isto foi conseguido através da comparação de três métodos de classificação, que têm em conta um número diferente de critérios. A análise ABC considera apenas o volume de vendas, a análise ABC-XYZ relaciona o volume de vendas com a frequência de vendas e o método TOPSIS tem em conta seis critérios: volume de vendas, frequência de vendas, volume (m^3), custo unitário, qualidade e fator crítico.Deste modo, foi possível compreender quais os parâmetros considerados decisivos para o planeamento e para a gestão de stocks, quais os pesos de cada um, os intervalos limite para cada critério e as diferentes possibilidades de classificação tendo em conta a variação do número de critérios, permitindo assim criar uma proposta de definição da estratégia de produção para os produtos.De modo geral, permitiu observar que a ferramenta TOPSIS tem potencial de aplicabilidade na empresa, não só pela sua simplicidade de aplicação e de facilidade de parametrização, mas também pela forma como se comportou ao classificar produtos em que não existiu concordância entre os três métodos.Esta ferramenta pode ser futuramente aplicada quer para apoiar a gestão do planeamento e controlo de produção na definição da estratégia de produção de cada produto, quer para prever a estratégia de produção mais ajustada de um artigo novo, em que já exista previsão do seu comportamento nos diferentes critérios.
This document has as main objective the exploration of article classification methods, to assist the planning and production control of Empresa X and to present a proposal for product classification. This classification has made by associating the most important products with the Make-to-Stock production strategy, allowing them to have shorter delivery times, and associating the rest with the Make-to-Order strategy, which allows for their customization.This was achieved by comparing three ranking methods, which consider a different number of criteria. ABC analysis only uses sales volume, ABC-XYZ analysis relates sales volume to sales frequency and the TOPSIS method takes into account six criteria, namely: sales volume, sales frequency, volume (m^3), unit cost, quality and critical factor.In this way, it was possible to understand which parameters are considered decisive for the planning and management of stocks, what are the weights of each one, what limit intervals for each criterion and the different classification possibilities considering the variation in the number of criteria, thus enabling to create a proposal to redefine the production strategy for the products.In general, it allowed to observe that the TOPSIS tool has applicability potential in the company, not only for its simplicity of application and ease of parameterization, but also for the way it behaved when classifying products in which there was no agreement between the three methods.In the future, it can be applied either to support the management of production planning and control in defining the production strategy of each product, or to predict the most adjusted production strategy for a new article, in which there is already a prediction of its behavior in the different criteria.

A presente dissertação foi realizada no âmbito do Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial da Universidade do Minho, tendo sido desenvolvida em ambiente industrial, na empresa Leica - Aparelhos Óticos de precisão. O projeto desenvolveu-se com a finalidade de reduzir o nível de inventário da empresa e de otimizar a cadeia de abastecimento. No contexto de uma empresa moderna, a logística revela-se bastante importante afetando significativamente o lucro das organizações. A redução dos custos logísticos através de uma cadeia de abastecimento coesa, ágil e magra pode traduzir-se numa vantagem competitiva para a organização. O desenvolvimento desta dissertação teve como base a metodologia Action Research, iniciando-se assim pelo diagnóstico da situação atual da área em estudo. Primeiramente, observou-se que o stock não se encontrava categorizado e procedeu-se à sua classificação através da Análise ABC/XYZ constatando-se a existência de produtos obsoletos e de falhas quanto à veracidade da informação acerca de determinados produtos. Eliminados alguns destes produtos houve uma redução do stock de 2,67% e corrigiram-se os erros encontrados nas localizações e quantidades dos componentes no software SAP. Analisou-se também a cadeia de abastecimento de matéria-prima e foram identificados alguns desperdícios como transportes e movimentos desnecessários, e excessos de stocks. Através da otimização do fluxo da cadeia de abastecimento a empresa conseguiu eliminar três referências de matéria-prima (tubos maciços ou com orifícios em aço inoxidável, latão, cobre e liga de alumínio/magnésio), o que libertou espaço físico nos racks para três novas referências, dado que este se encontrava lotado. Além disso, desenvolveu-se uma ferramenta em Excel VBA e Power Query de forma, a facilitar o fluxo de informação com o fornecedor. Através desta otimização da cadeia de abastecimento houve uma redução dos custos de transporte em 8.158 €/ano e uma diminuição do trabalho operacional em 14.700 €/ano, perfazendo um benefício de 22.858 €/ano.
The present dissertation was carried out within the scope of the Integrated Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, University of Minho, having been developed in an industrial environment, in the company Leica - Optical precision devices. The project was developed with the purpose of reducing the company's inventory level and optimize the supply chain. In the context of a modern company, logistics proves to be very important significantly affecting the profit of organizations. The reduction logistics costs through a cohesive supply chain, agile and lean can result in into a competitive advantage for the organization. The development of this dissertation was based on the methodology of Action Research, starting with the diagnosis of the current situation of the study area. Firstly, it was observed that the stock was not categorized and it was classified by an ABC / XYZ Analysis, verifying the existence of obsolete products and errors in the database about certain articles. After the elimination of some of these products, there was a reduction of the stock of 2,67% and the errors found in the locations and quantities of the components in the SAP software were corrected. The raw material supply chain was also analyzed and some wastes were identified, such as unnecessary transport and movements, and excess stocks. Through the optimization of the supply chain flow, the company was able to eliminate three references of raw material (tubes), which freed up physical space in the racks for three new references, since it was full. In addition, a tool in Excel VBA and Power Query was developed, in order to facilitate the flow of information with the supplier. Through this supply chain optimization, there was a reduction in transport costs by € 8.158 €/year and a decrease in operating costs by 14.700 €/ year, resulting in a benefit of 22.858 €/year.
