Students who excelled in high school enter college with the expectation that, despite the increase in competition, they will continue to achieve academically at the college level. Some high-ability students never lose momentum. They view college as the next stop on the road to ongoing success and continue to achieve at superior levels. Other high-ability students find the pressure to succeed at the college level to be overwhelming. In this article I describe some of the characteristics of high ability students and give particular attention to high ability students who are pursing business degrees. Advising strategies for working with this population are also discussed.

Abstract:
Past research has assumed that group differences in academic performance entirely reflect genuine differences in ability. In contrast, extending research on stereotype threat, we suggest that standard measures of academic performance are biased against non-Asian ethnic minorities and against women in quantitative fields. This bias results not from the content of performance measures, but from the context in which they are assessed—from psychological threats in common academic environments, which depress the performances of people targeted by negative intellectual stereotypes. Like the time of a track star running into a stiff headwind, such performances underestimate the true ability of stereotyped students. Two meta-analyses, combining data from 18,976 students in five countries, tested this latent-ability hypothesis. Both meta-analyses found that, under conditions that reduce psychological threat, stereotyped students performed better than nonstereotyped students at the same level of past performance. We discuss implications for the interpretation of and remedies for achievement gaps.

Reading is the main means of exposure for English as a second or foreign language learner. The present study aimed at finding out the reading comprehension ability (RCA) of the master level students, majoring in English at Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal in relation to IELTS academic reading test. Administering a sample testand analyzing its data, it was found that the RCA of the master level students is not adequate in terms of IELTS standard since their RCA is 41% and the IELTS score is 3.70 band. This shows that they are at ‘Extremely Limited User’ level for the admission policies in IELTS recognised countries and not eligible to get the admission in the IELTS recognised Universities. The implication of the study is that there is a need for reading skills development programme incorporating the enhancement of inferential, predictive and interpretive skills. Abstract:
Speaking as a language skill has been considered the most difficult one to master by the students especially in Songserm Wittaya School Songkla, Thailand. It was found that the majority of the students found it difficult to speak English fluently. As a productive skill, speaking is complex because learners need to acquire the accuracy and fluency in speaking. However, one EFL class showed a bit difference in the ability of speaking English because of their reading intensity. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by a questionnaire for intensive reading and an interview on speaking to 30 students at 4/3 grade. The results of this research in general revealed that most of the students at grade 4/3 Thailand are good in speaking English due to their intensive reading that reached 50%. It was clearly seen from the analysis of some aspects of speaking (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension) in the interview section and questionnaire of reading intensity that 50% of the participants can speak English better through reading activity intensively. This finding implies that intensive reading has become a meaningful input for students’ speech production.

Abstract:
Reading diagrams is an important ability needed by college students, particularly to writing their thesis. This ability could help students in describing and communicating the results of their research. Conversely, the inability to read diagrams causes errors in interpreting the results of the research. This descriptive qualitative study aims to describe the ability of students to read diagrams in terms of gender differences and the tendency to choose problems between bar/line diagrams, and the reasons behind the difficulties for students reading diagrams. This study involved 25 students of Mathematics Education, University of Lampung. Research data were collected using test and interview instrument. The results showed that students’ability both male and female to read diagrams was classified as moderate, the ability to read bar charts of female students was higher than that of male students but the ability to read line diagrams of male students was higher than female students, female students tend to choose bar diagrams rather than line diagrams while male students tend to choose line diagrams rather than bar diagrams, and the cause of difficulties in reading diagrams for female students were errors in understanding the meaning words while male students were errors of logical thinking in associating data with other data.

Abstract : This study was aimed to define profile of mathematical communication based on the level of problem solving ability on secondary students. This study used mixed methods model with explanatory type. This sample used 30 secondary school students who was chosen based on teachers’ recommendation. The result shown that there are 16,67% students whose problem solving’s ability were placed on low level If we look on mathematical communication ability’s side, most of students faced on the diffulties of projecting figures into mathematical ideas. Students still made mistakes on calculating and the indicators was difficult when it stated to project any figures into mathematical ideas while the indicator that appear frequently was stated events or ideas in mathematical laguage. There are 70% students that whose problem solving ability were placed on medium level. If we look on mathematical conection ability most of information as shown unclearly and faced on difficulties when they summarize conclusion, they stated it into mathematical symbol. There are 13,33% students whose problem solving ability were pleced on high level and unclear to every single information that was told within solving strategy which directly on solving essentials.
