This book deals with the problem of human reason and thinking from a somewhat unexpected angle. Its main idea is that both are the product of evolution, and therefore they bear the imprint of their history, and they are mostly reduced to them, although they are not entirely limited to them. This means that they are by no means universal, on the contrary, they are conditioned by their very formation and the circumstances within which they developed and which literally created them as we know them. In practical terms, this suggests that they are aimed at solving the problems and the type that fa

Abstract:
AbstractSubaerial biofilm (SAB) formation on cultural heritage objects is often considered an undesirable process in which microorganisms and their by-products, e.g., enzymes and pigments, cause damage or alteration to a surface. Since biofilms are widespread phenomena, there has been a high demand for preventive and control strategies that resist their formation or reduce their negative effects once formed. Up to date, the main strategy to control biofilms has been the use of biocides. Because of their intrinsic properties, biocidal products can pose risks to humans, animals, and the environment. In this chapter, the authors call “green” only those alternative strategies to biocides able to prevent/control biofilms but that do not kill microorganisms, i.e., irrespective of the use of natural compounds. Here, we describe some of the methods that are most commonly used to test the effectiveness of antibiofilm compounds with multiple-species biofilm model systems. A unified terminology and well described protocols and guidelines are still required to compare and test the effectiveness of traditional or novel compounds against biofilms retrieved on heritage surfaces.

This paper aims at studying the Italian fortune of the Calderonian play Con quien vengo vengo , firstly, by focusing on its first version by Michele della Marra (1665) and then moving on to a triple textual comparison between the Calderonian source-text, the rewriting of Della Marra and the second adaptation by the actress Angiola D'Orso, whose first edition came out in 1666. Despite his faithfullness to the plot of the original text, the first translator remodels the text either by summarizing it, or removing certain typically Calderonian rhetorical artifices, or replacing the figure of the gracioso by that of the southern servant, who uses the dialect. On the contrary, Angiola D'Orso shows greater respect for the Spanish play, displaying more sensitiveness toward its rethorical beauty, which she is able to reproduce successfully.

Abstract:
AbstractComponent failures within water supply systems can lead to significant performance losses. One way to address these losses is the explicit anticipation of failures within the design process. We consider a water supply system for high-rise buildings, where pump failures are the most likely failure scenarios. We explicitly consider these failures within an early design stage which leads to a more resilient system, i.e., a system which is able to operate under a predefined number of arbitrary pump failures. We use a mathematical optimization approach to compute such a resilient design. This is based on a multi-stage model for topology optimization, which can be described by a system of nonlinear inequalities and integrality constraints. Such a model has to be both computationally tractable and to represent the real-world system accurately. We therefore validate the algorithmic solutions using experiments on a scaled test rig for high-rise buildings. The test rig allows for an arbitrary connection of pumps to reproduce scaled versions of booster station designs for high-rise buildings. We experimentally verify the applicability of the presented optimization model and that the proposed resilience properties are also fulfilled in real systems.

This final chapter explores yet further examples of how the principles of testing can be applied within the social sciences. As with the previous chapters, the authors begin by asking students to Google questions and then use the results Google provides to ask more sophisticated questions about the impact and personal consequences of the question. They begin by asking a question about how serial killer, Harold Shipman, was able to escape suspicion for as long as he did. They then take up a question about the common traits of serial killers, paying attention to the effects of the traits and how these traits may have personal connections to students. Abstract:
Chapter 8, “Molecular deviants: sequence signatures of selection and demography,” dives into the logic and mechanics of some of the most common tests of neutrality to show how and why data can reveal differences from the predictions of the standard neutral model. It introduces approaches based on skewed patterns of polymorphism alone, including Tajima’s D test, and on differentiation or divergence alone, like the Lewontin-Krakauer, Population Branch Statistic (PBS), and K A / K S relative-rates tests. Chapter 8 also covers tests of neutrality that integrate information from both within and between species, including the HKA-test and McDonald-Kreitman (MK) test. The logic for other tests of neutrality also is introduced, including ABBA-BABA, Composite Likelihood Ratio (CLR), Extended Haplotype Homozygosity (EHH), and other approaches. Practical implications of ancestral polymorphism and slightly deleterious polymorphisms are discussed, for example, in calculating and interpreting the neutrality index and fraction of positively selected sites (α‎). The goal of this chapter is to explain the logic of methods applied to molecular population genetic data to read the story of evolutionary history from the genome.

Abstract:
In the majority of UK laboratories initial testing for HIV is now performed using a fourth generation test, which is a combination test for antibody to HIV and p24 antigen. These tests should be able to detect antibody to both HIV-1 and HIV-2. In addition, due to the heterogeneity of the virus they should be able to reliably detect antibody to the main circulating subtypes of HIV-1, i.e. group M (Major), O (Outlier), and N (non-M, non-O). The p24 antigen is an HIV capsid protein which is produced in large quantities during initial infection, prior to seroconversion. The sensitivity and specificity of fourth generation tests is typically > 99%. However, all positive results need further confirmation tests, as discussed below. Third generation laboratory assays only test for the presence of antibody to HIV. Though it includes the detection of IgM (which is not included in second generation assays), they do not detect early infection with isolated HIV antigen prior to seroconversion. Point-of-care testing for HIV is performed in the clinic or at bedside. Like laboratory based assays these tests can be either third or fourth generation. The sensitivity and specificity of point-of-care tests is considered lower than that of laboratory tests, and all positive results require confirmation with a laboratory assay. The window period is the length of time following infection with HIV until the appearance of laboratory markers of HIV infection in the blood. This period varies depending on which marker, i.e. antibody or antigen, is being tested for. The window period for fourth-generation tests is between eleven days and one month. Patients being counselled prior to this testing should be advised that a negative result does not cover risk exposures in the preceding month. These patients should be advised to have repeat testing if they have any further exposure risks in the preceding month prior to testing. For third-generation tests the window period is up to three months, correlating with the amount of time it may take for antibodies to HIV to develop.

The Soviets grew fearful that it was cover for an actual assault. The situation was precarious, perilously close to what generations of analysts considered the most likely cause of a hot war: miscalculation. Abstract:
This chapter is concerned with the use of Web-based technologies to deliver and manage on-line multiple choice tests for university teaching. The data defining the tests and the results of each student’s attempt is maintained in a server-side database. The test is delivered in a Web page that can be displayed by a standard Web browser. Students are thus able to access the required tests from the same location that they can access their course content, in large part, on the Web. Multiple choices tests have been shown to be an effective way of both supporting the learning experience and providing an objective assessment process. The basic elements of the required technology are described including some implementation issues that are necessary to achieve a viable and robust system. Some of the key issues include the use of server-side tools for database access and client-side components to deliver and manage the user interface.

Abstract:
This paper describes the test rig and the functional tests that have been carried out to define a satisfying solution for the bearing #2 of NovaLT16, the GE Oil & Gas latest high-efficiency Gas Turbine. The bearing #2 is a journal bearing located inside the compressor discharge casing and for this reason it is exposed to high temperatures. As a consequence, the lube oil provided to the bearing should not only lubricate the bearing pads but also cool the bearing housing and for this reason it should be more than what required by the pads. This large amount of oil is gathered by two bearing

Electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) are used in the petroleum industry to pump large amount of fluids from subsea deep wells. Currently, ESPs are responsible for approximately 10% of the world’s crude oil production. When high flow rates are required, gas lift and the ESP are the only available technologies that can be applied. ESP systems are much more complex and less reliable than the gas lift method, but they are more efficient and able to yield higher flow rates and pressure. ESPs are installed inside or near production wells, with the entire auxiliary infrastructure for power supply and

Abstract:
In this work we present in a unified way an analytic parametric design method for cycloidal rotors. The method allows for a fast identification of thrust, lift and power parameters as a function of the rotor geometries. Even if, in recent years, the CFD based approaches have been able to provide adequate means to analyse this class of flow, the present model is useful to provide immediate guidelines in the preliminary stages of design, and also to be used as a tool to perform optimization of the cyclorotor. The cycloidal propeller, which can be described as a horizontal rotary wing, offers pow

The increased use of softer binders in Illinois over the past decade is primarily attributed to the increased use of recycled materials in asphalt pavement construction. The shift in demand of using PG 58-28 over PG 64-22 has resulted in potential alternative methods to produce softer binders more economically using proprietary products. However, there are challenges in using these proprietary products for asphalt modification because of uncertainty in their long-term performance and significant variability in binder chemistry. Being able to follow the chain of contagion of COVID-19 is important to help save lives and control the epidemic without sustained costly lockdowns. This is especially relevant in Latin America, where economic contractions have already been the largest in the regions history. Given the high rates of transmission of COVID-19, relying only in manual contact tracing might be infeasible. Acceptability and uptake of contact tracing apps with exposure notifications is key for the implementation the “test, trace and treat” triad.
