Clubfoot is a developmental defect of the lower limb that affects as many as 1 in 500 births across Scotland (Miedzybrodzka., 2003). How the clubfoot defect arises during embryonic development is not known, although a number of tissue abnormalities have been postulated to be the primary abnormality in the development of the clubfoot defect. A chick model of clubfoot was created to investigate the developmental basis of clubfoot. Using a method modified from previous work carried out by Germiller and co-workers (1998), clubfoot was induced in the chick embryo using the pharmacological agent dec

The first specific hypotheses tested were that the candidate fibronectin receptor integrin a5pi and the laminin 1/2 candidate receptor integrin a7pi are expressed by developing DSMC, Using immunohistochemistry, Western blots, and flow cytometry, these

A remarkable feature of the human visual system is that it is possible to extrapolate a large amount of information about the three-dimensional structure of the environment simply from the pattern of light that falls on the retinae. This information is derived from a number of different cues to depth. The mechanisms by which these are encoded in the brain, combined into an overall percept, and subsequently interpreted are reasonably well understood. However, individuals who participate in studies of depth perception tend to have acute sensitivity to certain depth cues, meaning that the consequ

Anatomical and physiological studies have shown that the zebrafish is a useful model of vertebrate visual function. Anatomy has shown that the zebrafish possess the traditional three cone types (S-, M-, and L- cones), and a fourth cone type that is sensitive to ultraviolet light (U-cones). Physiologically, the adult zebrafish appears to have a complex visual system with color opponent mechanisms. Anatomical results suggest that the zebrafish may be a good model of retinal development as well. The zebrafish retina develops in a sequential manner and is immature at hatch. Bilotta et al. Genomic imprinting is the preferential expression of one allele over the other. It is an epigenetic phenomenon that occurs in the placentas of mammals and the endosperm of angiosperms. Endosperm, like placentas, is a nutrient rich tissue that supports the growing embryo within the seed. All grains are predominantly composed of this tissue. It is the product of a second fertilization event, resulting in both maternal and paternal alleles. Some alleles are regulated differentially, resulting in imprinted genes. The recent evidence concerning the nature of cognitive development in Down Syndrome (DS) suggests that it is different than normal development. The neuropathology seen in DS implicates a prenatal interruption of normal neural development as a possible basis for these differences. Since the hippocampal formation (HF) undergoes extensive postnatal maturation and is found to be abnormal in DS, it is proposed that cognitive deficits associated with DS would be most evident in tasks requiring hippocampal function.
