Det finns naturligtvis otaliga branscher där invandrare har företag, men restauranger och butiker är kanske mest synliga, i och med att innehavarnas egen kultur syns i utbudet av varor. I denna artikel ska jag inrikta mig på butiker av den typ vi kan kalla orientaliska butiker. Mitt intresse för ämnet väcktes av den orsaken att de här butikerna är en vanlig syn i stadsbilden, men personligen hade jag aldrig handlat, eller ens varit inne i någon orientalisk butik. Jag ville undersöka den exotiska värld som butikerna utgör.

Den 29 mars 1956 i Dornach, Schweiz undertecknade Olly och Uno Donner ett donationsbrev som lade grunden för ett nytt forskningsinstitut i Åbo. De donerade sin egendom till Stiftelsen för Åbo Akademi för att grunda Donnerska institutet för religionshistorisk och kulturhistorisk forskning som en knutpunkt för forskningen kring religion och kultur, en mötespunkt för forskare, studerande och samhället i stort samt en utsiktspunkt mot stora världen, ny kunskap och nya idéer. Historiken ger en grundlig beskrivning av institutets uppkomsthistoria och de viktiga personer som under årens lopp bidragit till verksamheten. Den presenterar forskare och bibliotekarier, internationella symposier och kulturseminarier, forskningssatsningar och hyllkilometer av forskningslitteratur, forskarpris och stipendier, fester och vardag. Historiken speglar också den ämnesmässiga utveckling som skett inom religionsforskningen, både nationellt och internationellt, under den här tiden. Mystik blir vetenskap: Donnerska institutet 1956–2021 har skrivits av Nils G. Holm, professor emeritus i religionsvetenskap vid Åbo Akademi och långvarig styrelsemedlem vid institutet. Turun Akatemian piirissä toimineen Aurora-seuran julkaisema Tidningar utgifne af ett sällskap i Åbo oli ensimmäinen Suomessa ilmestynyt sanomalehti. Siinä julkaistiin vuosina 1771−1772 Pehr Adrian Gaddin kirjoittama neliosainen artikkelisarja Försök til Ichtyologia Fennica, joka käsitteli Suomen kalastoa. Kielihistoriallisesta näkökulmasta artikkelit ovat kiinnostavia, koska niissä mainitaan lukuisia suomenkielisiä kalannimityksiä. Tämä tutkimus keskittyy tarkastelemaan ennen kaikkea Gaddin artikkelien kalojen suomenkielisiä nimityksiä. Tavoitteena on saada selville, mitkä kalannimitykset esiintyvät jo vanhemmissa kirjallisissa lähteissä. Toisaalta on kiinnostavaa selvittää, minkä suomenkielisten nimitysten kirjalliset ensiesiintymät ovat Gaddin artikkeleissa ja millainen tausta näillä nimityksillä on. Tutkimuksessa käy ilmi, että ensiesiintymiä on useita.

Abstract:

Årets tema för Budkavlen är det forskningsmaterial etnologer och folklorister samlar in och bearbetar. Svenska litteratursällskapets traditionsvetenskapliga nämnd anordnade 2002 ett seminarium där frågelistmetoden stod i fokus och tanken var att Budkavlen kunde utgå från de föredrag som då hölls. Så har också gjorts, men många andra bidrag finns med som processats i andra sammanhang. Här kan t.ex. nämnas den forskarutbildning som vid Åbo Akademi ges i form av kursen Människovetenskapernas filosofi ledd av professor Lars Hertzberg och doc. Olli Lagerspetz. Temat för vårterminen 2003 var att förstå det främmande. Tre artiklar har ventilerats vid proseminarier i folkloristik och etnologi vid Åbo Akademi.

The current issue of Approaching Religion is based on a summer school and conference arranged in Åbo/Turku, Finland, in June 2021, with the theme ‘Religion and Cultural Change’. The event was organized jointly by the Polin Institute for Theological Research (Åbo Akademi University), the Centre for the Study of Christian Cultures (University of Turku), and the Donner Institute for Research in Religion and Culture. The aim was to bring together doctoral candidates and researchers from various academic fields who engage with the study of religion, such as theology, religious studies, history, philosophy, the arts, social and political sciences and so forth. This included presentations that engaged with the theme Religion and Cultural Change from both historical and contemporary perspectives, as well as looking to the future where possible. As conference organizers, we wanted to highlight cultural change both as dramatic breaking points in history and as slowly evolving transformations. Hence, the conference theme allowed us to address past, present and emerging trends and trajectories within culture, society and the scholarly community. Abstract:

I och med grundandet av Sjöhistoriska Museet vid Åbo Akademi den 3 januari 1936 påbörjades en intensiv insamling av föremål och arkivalier till museet. Dels mottogs mängder av donationer, dels köptes bl.a. ett stort antal skeppsporträtt och kaptenstavlor in av både privatpersoner och antikhandlare. Tanken var att det sjöhistoriska museet i Åbo inte bara skulle representera staden och Åboland utan också beakta sjöfarten på riksplan och representera hela landet. I dag består samlingen, som är unik på våra breddgrader, av över 210 verk föreställande segel- och ångfartyg mellan åren 1775 och 2001. Den äldsta kaptenstavlan i samlingarna har en datering från 1775 och föreställer Conjuncturen med Matts Issberg från möjligtvis Wasa som skeppare.

Abstract:

In 1997, a total of 47 fish fairs were organised in Finland. In Åbo not only was the usual autumn fish fair held, but a fair was also arranged in the spring, too early (because of the ice) for people from the archipelago to be able come into town by means of their own boats. The times and places of the fish fairs over the year are given in the Fish Fair Calendar which is published by Fiskeritidskrift för Finland (Finnish Fishing Journal). Seven of the 47 fairs are called herring fairs, and among these is the autumn fair in Åbo, which is the one I will particularly focus on in this article.

Abstract:

As elsewhere in Finland, different types of yoga practices are popular in the city of Åbo/Turku. But how do practitioners view their own relationship to their practice, and further, what do they feel that they as individuals gain from it? Through in-depth interviews with yoga teachers in the city of Turku, the author examines ways in which individuals, in what could be called a post-secular society, construct a meaningful sense of self and of individual agency. The observations offered in this article represent preliminary notes for a larger work on yoga in Turku, conducted at the ‘Post-Secular Culture and a Changing Religious Landscape’ research project at Åbo Akademi University, devoted to qualitative and ethnographic investigations of the changing religious landscape in Finland.
