Abstract:
Background: In many developing countries, maternal deaths occur mainly as a result of unsafe abortions, a situation reflecting the inaccessibility of safe abortion services in such countries. In Ethiopia, unsafe abortion accounts for 32% of maternal deaths and almost 60% of gynaecological admissions, and is one of the top ten causes of general hospital admissions. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the views of women about the accessibility of safe abortion services in governmental health centres. Abstract:
Abortion is among the most neglected of the health-research issues in Indonesia. Various debates focus on whether or not abortion should be permissible and they often deny the fact that women continue to have abortions regardless of the legal status of the procedure. Advocacy towards having broader grounds for abortion is supported by only a few studies that attempt to estimate the annual number of abortions that are carried out. The research explored and provided an in-depth analysis of abortion in Yogyakarta province. It utilised data on total numbers of abortion-related complications and th

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Women seeking abortion services in the U.S. often encounter challenges of stigma, cost, transportation, and other logistics. In 2011, 1.7% of women aged 15–44 had abortions, and 89% of counties had no abortion clinic. Many states regulate abortion through prohibition of insurance coverage and other restrictions. Accurate, non-judgmental referrals from health care professionals may lessen obstacles and counteract stigma. STUDY QUESTION: What are women’s experiences accessing abortion care, and what is the role of professional referrals? METHODS: I conducted semi-structured qualita

This dissertation consists of three essays on Health Economics. Chapter 1 analyzes the effects of abortion costs for minors on abortions, sexual behavior, and births. We exploit a 2015 change in parental involvement (PI) laws in Spain as a natural experiment in costs, together with rich population-level data on abortions and births. Using the exact date of teenager birth, we first document a decrease in abortions by 17-years-olds using a difference-in-difference comparison with 18-years-olds, consistent with the law that targeted Spanish minors. The researcher used a non-experimental, exploratory, descriptive research design for the study. One hundred adolescents participated in the study. The study found that many adolescents will not admit to having had an abortion. Moreover, the respondents gave different meanings for abortion, had inadequate knowledge of abortion and sexual and reproductive health. Cultural taboos and religious beliefs have a great impact on adolescents’ sexual behaviour. Most adolescents would not acce

Abstract:
In 1996 the South African government legalised the termination of pregnancy (TOP) services, allowing women to choose to terminate unplanned pregnancies at designated facilities. Although TOP services are available, pregnant women continue to use illegal abortion services, with potentially life-risking consequences. The purpose of this study was to identify challenges encountered by women requesting TOP services, and to make recommendations for improved policies and practices, enabling more women in the North West Province (NWP) to access TOP services. Abstract:
The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act (no 92 of 1996) was implemented during 1997. This study attempted to investigate professional nurses' attitudes towards rendering these services in the Carletonville area of South Africa. The research results, obtained from questionnaires completed by professional nurses, indicated that most professional nurses would prefer:  women to be at least 16 years of age to access these services  not to allow repeated terminations of pregnancy to the same women  to administer pills rather than to use vacuum aspirations 

When a pregnancy-capable person is assaulted, abused, or killed, it is usually at the hands of a male partner or family member. Fatal and non-fatal injuries, chronic health conditions and risky behaviours are all outcomes of gender-based violence (GBV); furthermore, GBV can often lead to unplanned pregnancies. Abortion is, therefore, a predictable outcome for this population. Nurses and midwives are intrinsically involved in the care of pregnant people victimised by GBV. They could be instrumental in providing reproductive justice outcomes such as early intervention, support, and coordination
