ABSTRACT Bacillus subtilis produces hemicellulases capable of releasing arabinosyl oligomers and arabinose from plant cell walls. In this work, we characterize the transcriptional regulation of three genes encoding arabinan-degrading enzymes that are clustered with genes encoding enzymes that further catabolize arabinose. The abfA gene comprised in the metabolic operon araABDLMNPQ-abfA and the xsa gene located 23 kb downstream most probably encode α-l-arabinofuranosidases (EC 3.2.1.55). Here, we show that the abnA gene, positioned immediately upstream from the metabolic operon, encodes an endo

Flexible working arrangements (FWAs) provide academics a degree of freedom to control their working time, location and method. Academics need to be agile in managing their multiple work roles, but many universities are still not supportive. This research explores whether FWAs can affect academics’ work-life balance (WLB) and stress levels. Using a focus group discussion, eight academics were interviewed. Findings reveal that FWAs have a positive impact on WLB and reduce stress levels amongst Malaysian academics. Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home (WFH) has become a new normal

The focus of this study is to explore the profile of students who subscribed to MOOCs as a flexible learning option. The study was based on an analysis of the respondent’s profile and demographic data. The findings show that students had signed up for MOOCs in their last semester because they considered it to be a flexible learning option. The study found that there were no significant differences among the users’ demographic data, particularly gender and age. The only difference was in the chosen program of course via the MOOC platform. Keywords: Massive Open Online Course, MOOC user usage, g

Empowering women to participate in economic life is one way to improve the quality of life for women and families. However, many Malaysian women exit from the formal labour market resulting in women’s participation stagnating at around 40 percent since the 1990s. Using a mixed method approach, this study examines whether workplace flexibility may impact women’s empowerment and quality of life. A sample of 400 female employees from the services sector answered a self-administered questionnaire complemented by 30 interviews. Multivariate analysis and structured interviews showed that a workplace

This study analyzes how students live and work in relation to the need for room furniture, and how small local furniture traders face problems in response to that need. From interviews, questionnaires involving 123 students and the use of descriptive statistic and Chi-square test, it was found that male and female students prefer furniture that is affordable, simple, natural, multifunction and durable, besides light, practical and flexible. ABSTRACT During the initial pandemic influenza H1N1 virus outbreak, assays such as hemagglutination inhibition and microneutralization provided important information on the relative protection afforded by the population's cross-reactivity from prior infections and immunizations with seasonal vaccines. However, these assays continue to be limited in that they are difficult to automate for high throughput, such as in pandemic situations, as well as to standardize between labs. Thus, new technologies are being sought to improve standardization, reliability, and throughput by using chemically defi

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused a massive increase in the number of Malaysians working from home. This scenario has put the living and working gap at disposal, questioning the relevance of the ‘living lifestyle’, particularly in new housing township projects. This paper investigates the culture of working from home (WFH) and its influence on the spatial design of developer-designed terraced housing scheme for a new Suburban Township in Malaysia. Using qualitative observation and comparative analysis between developer’s home buying guide and the show unit, the findings suggest that ‘flexible o

Making sense of a dataset in an automatic and unsupervised fashion is a challenging problem in statistics and AI. Classical approaches for exploratory data analysis are usually not flexible enough to deal with the uncertainty inherent to real-world data: they are often restricted to fixed latent interaction models and homogeneous likelihoods; they are sensitive to missing, corrupt and anomalous data; moreover, their expressiveness generally comes at the price of intractable inference. As a result, supervision from statisticians is usually needed to find the right model for the data. However, s
