Abstract:

Abstract:
Mutations in the BRI gene are thought to cause dementias in members of families. The clinical symptoms are similar to those of Alzheimer's disease, but with additional ocular and hearing deficits, and spasticity. The mutations lead to the release of the 34-residue peptides, ABri and ADan, in the brains of afflicted individuals. We have synthesized the peptides in their straight-chain and oxidized cyclic forms and shown that the oxidized form of ABri and reduced form of ADan are toxic to human neuronal cell lines in culture. Neurotoxicity correlates with the extent of formation of SDS-stable non-fibrillar low-molecular-mass oligomers (SSNFOs).

Abstract:
The present article develops a framework for interpreting Upper Palaeolithic artefacts from an analysis of material complexity, numeration systems and timekeeping using cultural categorizations, insights on the emergence of number terms in language, and the astronomy practices of 33 contemporary hunter-gatherer societies. Our key findings suggest that astronomy originates in the ability to estimate and infer contextual relations among natural phenomena and transitions from these natural associations to material representations and cognitive technologies that mediate conceptual apprehensions of time as a substance that can be quantified. Given that artefacts may act as scaffolds for explicit concepts of numbers, and numbers scaffold explicit concepts of time, prehistoric artefacts such as the Blombos Cave beads (c. 75,000 bp), Abri Blanchard and Cellier artefacts (c. 28,000 bp), and plaque from Grotte du Taï (c. 14,000 bp) may represent similar scaffolding and conceptual development in numbers and time. It is proposed that the prehistoric societies making these artefacts possessed, in addition to material complexity, the abilities to express quantities in language and to use material externalization and cognitive technologies. Furthermore, the Abri Blanchard artefact is proposed to represent externalized working memory, a very modern interaction between mind and material culture.

Abstract:
Alzheimer disease and familial British dementia are neurodegenerative diseases that are characterized by the presence of numerous amyloid plaques in the brain. These lesions contain fibrillar deposits of the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) and the British dementia peptide (ABri), respectively. Both peptides are toxic to cells in culture, and there is increasing evidence that early “soluble oligomers” are the toxic entity rather than mature amyloid fibrils. The molecular mechanisms responsible for this toxicity are not clear, but in the case of Aβ, one prominent hypothesis is that the peptide can induce oxidative damage via the formation of hydrogen peroxide. We have developed a reliable method, employing electron spin resonance spectroscopy in conjunction with the spin-trapping technique, to detect any hydrogen peroxide generated during the incubation of Aβ and other amyloidogenic peptides. Here, we monitored levels of hydrogen peroxide accumulation during different stages of aggregation of Aβ-(1–40) and ABri and found that in both cases it was generated as a short “burst” early on in the aggregation process. Ultrastructural studies with both peptides revealed that structures resembling “soluble oligomers” or “protofibrils” were present during this early phase of hydrogen peroxide formation. Mature amyloid fibrils derived from Aβ-(1–40) did not generate hydrogen peroxide. We conclude that hydrogen peroxide formation during the early stages of protein aggregation may be a common mechanism of cell death in these (and possibly other) neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mineral fertilizers application frequencies: impact on the growth and development parameters of winter tomato under greenhouse in central Burkina Faso ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of mineral fertilizer input frequencies on growth, development, earliness and productivity variables of tomato varieties under rainy season cover crops. Three doses of NPK and urea were applied to tomato "Padama", "Thorgal" and "Tomy" seedlings in a shelter trial from May to August 2014 under rainfed conditions. The experimental design was a split-plot with 4 repetitions, with the main factor being the three frequencies of fertilization and the secondary factor the variety. Observations and measurements related to the height and diameter of the main stem of the plants, the dates of flowering and fruit set, the insertion height of the 1st floral bouquet, the numbers of flowers and fruit clusters per plant. Our results showed that plants fed with NPK and urea every three weeks (F2) grew faster than those under F1 (two weeks) and F3 (one application). Likewise, this feeding frequency induced a higher insertion height of the 1st floral bouquet in all cultivars. However, a similarity of the diameter of the main stem was found under the three delivery frequencies for each variety. The single (F3) and biweekly (F1) intake of NPK and Urea fertilizers increased the preciosity in all varieties compared to the intake every three weeks (F2). No significant differences between the three treatments for the number of flower bouquets and fruit clusters were observed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Malaysia is known for its multicultural diversity, which is heavily influenced by the ancient Malay culture, indigenous peoples and the cultures of Malaysia's second main ethnics groups - the Chinese and Indian. For centuries, our cultures have blended to create Malaysia's diverse heritage. Sadly, Malaysians are slowly losing their ancient culture due to modernisation. One particular culture of Malaysia that is close to extinction is the Peranakan culture. From 15 h onwards, cellular material in toxin exposed cultures became detached from the substra tum of the culture vessels. Hoffman modulation contrast photomicrography showed that this process was due to ricin and abrin exposed cells collapsing into membrane bound vesicles which retained the NR dye, became detached and floated into the medium. These apoptotic-like structural changes were further investi gated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and by agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA from control and exposed cultures. Many of the characteristic changes associated with apoptotic cell death were seen using TEM, including heterochromatin condensation at the nuclear periphery, crenulation of the nuclear mem brane and progressive degeneration of residual nuclear and cytoplasmic structures. The plasma membrane of many cells remained intact, and contained nuclear and cytoplasmic debris. Agarose gel electrophoresis of DNA extracted from toxin-treated cells revealed oligonucleosome sized DNA fragments, characteristic of apoptosis, from adherent cells at 7 h and both adherent and floating populations when harvested from 15 h; DNA from unexposed control cells did not show this fragmentation. The identification of apopto sis as being a significant additional mechanism of toxicity following exposure to ricin and abrin holotox ins raises the possibility of developing new therapeutic strategies against poisoning by these phytotoxins.

Abstract:
The term “culture-specific vocabulary” appeared in the 1980s. Problems of translating culture-specific terms from one language to another have always been a serious issue for translators. It causes even more problems if the languages being compared belong to different language groups and represent different cultures. Nevertheless, the study of culture-specific vocabulary helps to achieve the adequacy of translation, which in turn helps speakers of different languages and cultures to achieve mutual understanding. The above emphasizes the relevance and timeliness of the study of translation from the point of view of cultural linguistics. This paper will examine the peculiarities of translating culture-specific terms from Kazakh into English. It provides different methods of translating cultural connotations, taking into account the ways of living and thinking, as well the historical and cultural backgrounds embedded in the source language (hereafter SL) and target language (hereafter TL). These methods will be analyzed using specific examples, originals and translations of such works as “The Path of Abai” by Mukhtar Auezov and “Nomads” by Ilyas Yessenberlin. Therefore, the main aim of the paper is to try to explain main approaches and theories needed for adequate understanding of different cultures through translation.

This study investigated cross-cultural differences in the privacy regulation and perception of crowding among two Iranian sub-cultures (Yazdi and Northern women). The research methodology was designed on interview and questionnaire. A random size of 100 Yazdi and Northern women was selected in Yazd and Sari cities. Moreover, to examine the survey Chi-Square Test, Independent Sample Test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were conducted. The results show that Yazdi women desired more privacy in public spaces than Northern women. Regardless of culture, women’s desired and achieved privacy levels have associations with the level of perceived crowding in public spaces. These findings assist environmental designers to present strategies for achieving privacy in relation to Iranian sub-cultures. Abstract:
The authors attempt to consider the philosophical and ideological ideas of the great thinker and humanist Abay Kunanbayev. The analysis of Abay Kunanbayev's work has shown that there are poorly developed aspects, however, without claiming to cover all aspects of the problem comprehensively, the authors made an attempt to study the nature and essence of Abay's philosophical and ideological views in the work "Words of Edification" based on the material of Abay Kunanbayev's work "Words of Edification". The authors focused on the analysis of the philosophical content of the work "Words of Edification". The article uses a philosophical methodology that corresponds to the current level of spiritual and scientific- theoretical culture. The authors implemented scientific methods such as the ascent from the abstract to the concrete, the principle of concrete historicism (the unity of historical and logical). Concrete historicism, exploring the history of the subject, considers the logic of the historically developing subject (process), this principle contributes to the active reflection of the historical process. Historicism traces and reproduces the essence of the historical process from the point of view of its formation and development in the system of concepts. Abay's creativity occupies a special place in the world culture, he raised spiritual culture to a new level, gave new examples of reflection of the Kazakh reality. Abai justified a new worldview, new thinking, new values, which are fundamentally different from everything that was in the traditional culture of the Kazakhs. In the work "Words of Edification", the object of criticism is the traditional Kazakh society. Criticism has a constructive character, as a result of which universal problems, ideas of kindness, humanity, compassion, mercy, freedom and responsibility are raised. Abai forms a new approach to the concept of labor. The great thinker showed the role of work in the formation and development of a person, personality, that through work and activity it is possible to comprehend knowledge, science. Abay expressed a new approach to religion, he contrasted blind faith with a reasonable study of Islam, when they accept Iman not only as something sacred, but also know how to protect and strengthen it with reasonable arguments. Abay developed a new ideal of a perfect, true person, "tolyk adam", who strives for knowledge, is a moral person, recognizes freedom of choice and responsibility. The moral code of the great humanist is "Adam Bol". Abay, determining the status of a person in the world, notes that a person's mind, erudition, honor and charm make him beautiful and strong, he focuses on spirituality, knowledge, education and culture.

Abstract:
From the entire Church several voices are demanding that Christianity does not continue to identify itself with Western culture, but it welcomes different cultures and incultures in them, moving forth the primitive church’s missionary dynamism that the Second Vatican council has reestablished. Despite some positive fruits, Christianity’s Westernizing has produced several negative effects in Christian life and faith expression which are necessary to correct: rationalist intellectualism, dualism, an image of God more connected to power than to love and compassion. It seems that Athens triumphs over Jerusalem. Some crises in several dimensions of the church are results of the identification faith-Western culture. Both the existence of the Eastern and Latin American Church shows that the de-westernizing and inculturation is not impossible. Different configurations of local churches cannot be considered with suspicion, but they are a fair demand of the church’s universal catholicity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study looks at the economic, political, environmental, cultural, technological, legal, and ethical macro-environmental forces which impact globalization Pre-2018. Key events are examined as indicators of the state of globalization around the world. The examination of globalization centers on these key events in the United States and Saudi Arabia. The issues that rose out these events are used to interpret whether the state of globalization is influenced. The issues of economic class, unemployment, CEO compensation, The Kyoto Protocol, the rise of social media, and Saudi Arabia’s joining the WTO are examined based on their influence on the state of globalization. The study concludes that convergence of cultures, based on nation-states’ responses to the arbitrage of information in the areas of economies, politics, environment, law, culture, and ethics has is a real influence on the state of globalization. The negative or positive effects of globalization are irrelevant in comparison to the actions taking by nation-states in response to key events.

Abstract:
AbstractAt the end of a mushroom cropping house trial designed to determine the infectivity, to phorid flies, of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema D1 (isolate IOW45), the spent, nematode-infested substrate was deposited as a stack on the edge of a field. The introduced population of Steinernema D1 (IOW45) was monitored by bi-monthly sampling for eight months. The infectivity, to Galleria mellonella larvae, of nematodes extracted from cores of substrate taken from the stack, was determined. There was a decline (P < 0.01) in the numbers of nematodes extracted on each of the sample dates. After the first sample was taken, fewer (P < 0.001) nematodes were recovered from the top layer of the stack than from the bottom or middle layers. Nematode infectivity declined (P < 0.001) over the first two months in the field and then remained at a constant low level until month 8, when no G. mellonella were parasitised. After removal of the stack, subsequent soil samples taken from plots that had been underlying, or adjacent to it, were baited with G. mellonella larvae. Samples of the haemolymph taken from larvae that died in the soil were tested with a monoclonal antibody specific to the bacterial symbiont (Xenorhabdus sp.) of Steinernema D1 (IOW45). Using this method, Steinernema D1 (IOW45) was detectable in soil that had been underlying the compost stack for as long as 12 months after compost deposition.

Abstract:
The Soviet canonisation of Abai, the nineteenth-century Kazakh poet and enlightener became a problematic theme for local intellectuals in the 2010s after the Occupy Abai movement in Moscow raised concerns over the heritage of Abai as a Sovietised canon and as an independent non-Soviet thinker. In 2012 oppositional leaders in Russia occupied Abai monument in Moscow and the leader of the opposition Alexey Navalny, called for his supporters to gather around the monument to unknown strange Kazakh guy using the Russian slang word – neponyatnii Kazakh. Local audience in Kazakhstan at first responded with offensive comments and questions to the Russian opposition movement – how come Abai, the Kazakh version of Russian poet and a visionary Alexander Pushkin, the symbol and canon of Soviet Kazakh literature and the symbol of post-Soviet Kazakhness and its culture could be unknown and strange? From the celebrated writer of the Soviet dekadas and Leninist prizes for Mukhtar Auezov's novel The Path of Abai ( Abai Zholy) Abai turned into neponyatnii – incomprehensible, strange (in words of Russian Alexey Navalny) and neponyatii – misunderstood poet. These discussions on popular online Russophone as well as Kazakhophone platforms and blogs opened up a debate on the legacy and problematic canonisation of Abai. Is Abai misunderstood in contemporary Kazakhstani society? From short essays when famous writer Gerold Belger speaks to Abai's monument in central Almaty to mobile phone applications featuring Abai's Qara Sozder, to the famous anonymous Abai graffiti in central Almaty and Occupy Abai movement responses in Kazakh internet sphere, I trace the mutations of Abai's canon. These discussions reveal the conflicting trends of young Kazakhs and Kazakhstanis who take their cultural criticisms online but continue using the “national” frameworks in their globalized discussions.
