Abstract:
Examines the accepted principles of controlled indexing, in published abstracting/indexing services and databases from the unusual aspect of the publisher’s need to minimize production costs. Detailed information concerning the production of Library & Information Science Abstracts (LISA) is presented showing income and costs. Ways in which factors involved in controlled indexing may be seen to manifest themselves in production parameters are shown by plotting graphs of the numbers of abstracts and index pages against numbers of abstracts for 77 individual issues of LISA. The close fit of the data to straight lines, with correlation coefficients approaching unity, provides a means of managing the size of individual issues to yield minimum printing/binding costs. The extended use of the Classification Research Group (CRG) classification notation to provide automatic extraction of chain indexing strings and associated cross-references is described in detail. The gains in staff productivity resulting from this and other procedures are indicated with reference to the expansion in LISA’s coverage between 1978 and 1984.

Abstract:
M.Bibl. (Information Studies)
Traditionally it is part of the library or information service to provide clients with access to current and relevant information through current awareness services. It is part of the information professional's task to apply new technology and necessary services to the advantage of the clients. The purpose of this study was to establish, by means of empirical research, the effectiveness of CoMIC - an abstracting journal service currently provided to the mining industry. Other institutions providing a similar abstracting journal service should be able to use this methodology as a basis when evaluating their own service. Both a literature survey (to gain basic information about current awareness services in general and more specifically abstracting journals) and a postal questionnaire (to establish clients' opinions about the CoMIC service) were used during the study. From the literature survey it was established that the use of an effective current awareness service holds a variety of advantages. There are however also a few problems associated with the provision of current awareness services. These problems are surpassable providing the necessary precautions are taken in time. The criteria to which abstracting journals are to adhere were established. The purpose of the questionnaire was to give clients the oportunity to express their personal views with regard to the CoMIC service. The most important information extrapolated from the questionnaire was that respondents were satisfied with most aspects of the service. Recommendations with regard to alleviating a few minor problems were provided. After an analysis of the research results, it was concluded that CoMIC should be classified as an effective abstracting journal service.

Abstract:
Bioinformatics is rapidly growing, interdisciplinary field of science, where methods from information technology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics are used to solve problems of biological science. To access latest scholarly articles in such an important branch one cannot deny the importance of open access journals. In this chapter an attempt has been made to access the current status of open access journals of bioinformatics which are covered by Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) on various parameters like country and language of publication, their currency, impact factor, article processing charges, copyright licensing model they are using, platform for hosting and their coverage in abstracting/indexing databases.

Abstract:
Academic libraries in India make use of ICT as tools to meet the information need of users who in this context are students and faculty staff. Academic libraries are established to support the objectives of their parent institutions which are to promote teaching, learning, and research. Therefore, academic libraries are expected to serve the students, lecturers, and other members of the academic community. To meet the information need of users, academic libraries provide various services such as user education (orientation/instruction services), inter-library loan/connection services, abstracting and indexing services, referral services, and circulation services. The finding of the respondents problems encountered while using ICT-based resources and services reveal the fact that, out of 732 respondents, 543 (74.18%) respondents stated too few computers with internet and 421 (57.51%) lack of subscription for more foreign journals for their main problems.
