Abstract:
This chapter explores the role of violence in Islam, specifically contrasting Islam in 611 with the Islam associated with terrorism on 9/11. When several tribes attempted to draw from the treaty that bound them to Muhammad, Abu Bakr opposed them in what became known as the Ridda wars. The Ottomans succeeded in invoking Islam, and also the doctrine of jihad. Islam became an explicit ideology and building block of public prestige for the newest Turkish Muslim Empire, and also became an idiom of protest against the gradual contraction of internal and external trade. The association of Osama bin Laden with al-Jazeera proves to be almost as significant as his decision to wage jihad. There are many ways to connect Bin Laden to the early generation of Islam. Bin Laden's legacy is one of deviance and damage rather than persistence and profit in the cause of Islam.

Tolmacheva, Marina A. Concubines on the Road: Ibn Battuta’s Slave Women. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190622183.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter considers the enslaved women belonging to Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Battuta (1304–1368 CE). Ibn Battuta was a serial slave owner, master of numerous concubines, and author of the renowned Book of Travels (Rihla) completed in 1357. It underscores the ubiquitous use of concubinage during the medieval Islamic period. Drawing on Ibn Battuta’s own observations, the discussion points to the hardships imposed on these women by Ibn Battuta’s relentless itinerary, pointing out that, unlike free women, the concubine’s slave status trumped all other aspects of her identity. She lacked the legal agency reserved for the male owner, although she could improve her lot by sexual and emotional manipulation, subterfuge, or by producing a child for her master.

Bucar, Elizabeth M. Islamic Virtue Ethics. Edited by Nancy E. Snow. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199385195.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes Islamic virtue ethics through the exemplary figure, Abu ‘Ali Ahmad ibn Muhammad Miskawayh (932–1030) and his influential work, The Refinement of Character (Tahdhid al-akhlaq). Miskawayh’s understanding of virtue is an example of cultural assimilation, especially of Greek philosophy, Islamic theology, and Sufism. Miskawayh’s theory of virtue ethics is described through his theological adoption of Greek ethics, view of moral anthropology, enumeration of specific virtues, and discussion of happiness. Finally, three ambiguities within Miskawayh’s theory of virtue are explored: individual versus social dimensions of ethics, the body’s role in the cultivation of character, and the grounding of virtue in a theory of mysticism.
