Abstract:
Serial verb construction (SVC) is a global phenomenon in the worlds’ languages; pidgins and creoles are no exception. Linguists working in the Benue-Congo family of languages attest to the fact that SVC is common in this family of languages. Different approaches have been adopted to account for it; experts are of the view that its origin, existence and productivity relate to the functional load of the inflectional categories of verbs or prepositions in specific languages. This paper examines the existence of SVC in the Abua language, and if it does, we intend to correct certain misconceptions and misrepresentations in the account for SVC. By way of methodology, we elicited data from our respondents, analyzed the data and identify SVC in the Abua language. We found out that SVC involves two principal verbs sharing one predication and one argument. At the same time, these main verbs share value for tense, aspect and represent a single event. This distinctive syntactic and semantic characteristic of SVC fosters serious theoretical challenges. This study evinces that characterizing SVC and making generalizations about its typology is indeed a difficult call to make. The evidence from our data suggests a number of properties that SVC language must have. Based on these underlying semantic and syntactic properties of SVC, we assert that the Abua language has SVC.

Abstract:
This study was carried out in Abua Central in Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Rivers State on the awareness and practice of cervical cancer screening among women aged 30 - 60 years. The objective of the study was to determine the awareness level of women of Abua central on cervical cancer screening and the practice, and the objectives were translated into research questions. Literature was reviewed, a purposeful sampling technique was used to select a sample size of (50) fifty from a target population of (200) two hundred women, the instrument used for the study was a self-developed questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of two sections A and B, section A consisted of personal data’s and section B consisted of questions on the variables used to answer the research questions. The questionnaire a design of four Likert scales of agree, strongly agree, disagree and strongly disagree was used. Fifty (50) questionnaire was administered face to face and the (50) fifty were retrieved. Percentage tables, bar chart, pie chart were used to represent the finding of the study while the chi-square X2 statistical tool was used to test the hypothesis at an alpha level of 0.05 significance, from the research analysis chi-square value of 15.2 degree of freedom at 6 and critical value 12.592 was gotten. After analysis of data, the result showed that women of Abua central are aware of cervical cancer screening but they do not participate in the screening programme. The implication for nursing is that nurses should work with other health teams in stressing the importance of cervical cancer screening. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made: women should be health educated on the importance of cervical cancer screening also government should provide cervical cancer screening units in a close-by hospital.

Abstract:
Bell pepper farming significantly contributes to economic development in Abua. However, phyto-parasitic nematodes are endemic in the area and affect quality of crop yield. Hence, this study was undertaken to investigate the dynamics of occurrence of nematodes in bell pepper roots and soil samples of the farms in Abua. Roots and soil from the root rhizosphere were simultaneously collected at 0-20 cm depth using an improvised soil auger and knife. Modified sieve plate technique was employed for nematode detection and a pictorial key was used for nematode identification at the genera level. An overall nematode abundance of 746 nematodes in the soil around the root region and 216 nematodes in the root tissues of the bell peppers were recorded. Gracilachus species (10.6 %) was more prevalent in the soil, and Meloidogyne species (35.2 %) exhibited the highest population in roots. The study found that Abua's cultivated soil is susceptible to nematode infestation, limiting crop performance. The nematodes showcased root burrowing which is an inherent pattern for survival. The result on root nematodes across the five bell farms surveyed was not significant (p > 0.05). The result opined that farmers in Abua, Rivers State, should understand the role of the soil nematodes and implement soil improvement strategies for improved crop performance and rural economic development.

Abstract:
Waste management is a major challenge for environmental groups working in poor countries. In this research, we examine the methods used for and problems encountered with waste management in Abua/Odual LGA, Rivers State, Nigeria. The administration of Abua/waste Odual has several challenges as a result of inadequate resources, including financing, infrastructure, treatment facilities, and equipment for garbage collection. Both primary and secondary sources were utilised to compile the data for this analysis. In all, 100 questionnaires were sent to collect primary data. People living in the randomly selected houses were the intended participants. From among the sixty localities in the research region, ten were randomly selected to receive questionnaires representing the residential population. Ninety[1]five completed surveys were gathered for evaluation. Study findings revealed an absence of proper waste management procedures and a dearth of trash disposal facilities in the region under investigation. The empirical results of this research suggest that the waste management techniques used in the examined region, such as the use of dustbins, buckets, plastics, bags, and other containers, may be used in modern Nigerian cities. In order to reduce trash production, the research suggested promoting waste recycling. Increasing plastics use, for instance, calls for more petroleum, which has both economic and environmental consequences.

Abstract:
The Vocabulary-Management Profile (VMP) is a graph of the moving average of the number of new vocabulary words introduced over successive intervals of text. Peaks and valleys on the VMP correlate closely with narrative structure: new episodes, new settings, new characters are signaled by an increase in new vocabulary, and hence by upturns on the curve. Conversely, downturns in the VMP normally signal a continuation of the episode, description, or characterization. Higher-level boundaries in discourse (such as those between paragraphs and narrative episodes) normally correspond with deeper valleys on VMPs than do lower-level boundaries (such as those between clauses and sentences). Hence, VMPs provide surprisingly accurate graphical representations of the hierarchical structure of discourse. In general, the VMPs for “A Rose for Emily” and “Dry September” confirm this close correspondence between VMPs and narrative structure. However, VMPs are formally equivalent to unlabeled tree diagrams, and like such diagrams, they can provide only partial, not complete analogues for the structure of discourse.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to determine urinary schistosomiasis in primary school pupils in some selected communities in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, the risk factors of schistosomiasis with the view of suggesting control measures suitable to reduce infectivity and morbidity. Urine samples were collected and investigated using centrifugation and sedimentation techniques for the presence ofS. heamatobium eggs. Also, the urine was examined using the chemical reagent strip, Medi-test Combi-9 for the presence of haematuria and proteinuria in the urine. Of 140 urine samples collected and examined, haematuria and proteinuria shows prevalence of 61 (43.6%) and 94 (67.1%) respectively, and an overall prevalence of S. haematobium infection of 25% was recorded. Males (51.9%) had higher infection rate than females (17.4%). Children within age 10-13 years had the highest occurrence (55.4%), due to frequent visit in the water bodies to swim, paddle, play in the mud, fish, wash, fetch water from the infected water while the least was recorded among children within age 3-5 seen as infant whose parents restrict from visiting the river often. Emago-Kugbo recorded the highest infection with (32.3%), but the least was recorded in Akani-Kugbo with (15%). Statistical analysis showed that the infection varied significantly among sexes, age at p>0.05, community infection was equally significant at 0.05. The result of this study has shown the presence of urinary schistosomiasis in the Kugbo Clan, though prevalence was below 50%. The childrenhave no knowledge about schistosomiasis infection in the area. Also the presence of snail species especially the Bulinus globosus and increase contact with fresh water were taught to be responsible for the occurrence of the infection in the Kugbo Area. The results show that the communities around the Kugbo Clan are prevalent with schistosomiasis and that there is immediate attention for mass drug distribution of praziquantel and public health education in curbing the disease in the study-area. Abstract:
The political Niger Delta comprises of nine (9) states namely; Abia, Akwa-lbom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers. Some Indigenous groups in the region are; Izon (Ijaw), Ikwerre, Ogoni, Ogba, Abua, Odual, Andoni, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Ukwani. Others include Epie-Atissa, Engenni, Degema, Edo, Ekpeye, Oron, Efik, Ibibio and others. Due to the dominant riverine environment of the area, the major traditional occupation of the people was fishing. Other economic practices of the people were farming, hunting and gathering, craft making and trading. The occupations served as means of livelihood of the people and development of the area. Development of the area was achieved through individual contributions, clan efforts and multi-ethnic co-operations. There are several studies on development of the region. However, studies on the roles of clans in the development of the region are few. Hence, this study helped to fill the existing gap. The study helps to preserve the history of roles of Kolokuma/Opokuma people in the development of the region. It would be a useful source of reference for future researchers on developmental studies of the region. The study made use of oral tradition and oral history. They were derived through Interviews with people in all Kolokuma/Opokuma Towns. Books, journals, newspapers and other secondary sources in library and internet were utilized. Data derived from the sources were analysed. The research findings showed that Kolokuma/Opokuma clans have contributed to the development of the Niger Delta in many ways.

Bienfait, Eric. "Abus de biens sociaux et abus de confiance." Nice, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003NICE0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the new penal code of 1994, misappropriation funds and breach of trust find one's way in a common repressive sphere of operations. These violations lead to a difficulty of differentiation and a confusion risk, which don't go with legal security principles and criminal legality. Indeed, risk materialize through the opportunity of a dual qualification suggested to judges. The doctrine, in its majority, is favourable to a reform in this context. Some of the authors aim at precise aspect of misappropriation funds as the prescription delay. Others consider that a content reform is necessary. Therefore, simple deletion of misappropriation funds violation would not be contemplate as a solution. Then, it's advisable to determinate in what extent breach of trust will supplant misappropriation funds. In this way, it is also necessary to find improvement for this incrimination in order to cover completely the repressive sphere of operations

Yazaki, Saeko. "Study of Abū Tālib al-Makkī." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5510.

Full text
Abstract:
The aims of this thesis are to evaluate the present status of scholarship on Abū Tālib al-Makkī (d. 386/996) and to expand the basis of further research on him by analysing him in a multi-dimensional way. This study challenges the conventional view that al-Makkī’s Qūt al-qulūb (‘The Nourishment of Hearts’) is a Sufi work. Part 1 introduces modern scholarship on al-Makkī. It also demonstrates several issues which are tackled in this thesis. The present study focuses on a metaphorical image of the heart, which is also shared in various cultures. By looking at this common idea, Part 2 first attempts to explore the nature of the Qūt within the context of Sufism and religion in general. This part provides a summarised translation of part of the Qūt, where the author elucidates his view of the heart. The intention of this annotated translation is to provide easy access to the key thought of al-Makkī in the Qūt, for the first time in English, on the basis of a critical edition of this book. Lastly Part 2 discusses the authenticity of al-Makkī’s alleged work, Ilm al-qulūb (‘The Knowledge of Hearts’). Part 3 analyses the influence of al-Makkī within and beyond Islam. Considering the limited area of the study of al-Makkī , this part first examines numerous works in various fields from his time until the twelfth/eighteenth century. This is to evaluate how he was perceived in Muslim scholarship and to explore areas which have not been discussed thoroughly before. Finally this thesis looks at the Andalusian Jewish scholar, Ibn Bāqūdā(d. some time after 472/1080) and his book al-Hidāya ilā farā'id al-qulūb (‘The Right Guidance to the Religious Duties of Hearts’). A possible link between the two authors has been sometimes pointed out; however, it has not been studied exhaustively. Through exploring various aspects of al-Makkī and his writing, the present thesis attempts to open up the study of the Qūt beyond Sufism and to offer an opportunity to give further thought on the essential features of the mystical dimensions of Islam.

Bergamin, Peter. "An intellectual biography of Abba Ahimeir." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2016. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:a49fe9c4-5ba4-427c-ae03-c0a8b79cbc83.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis focuses on the ideological development of the Maximalist Revisionist Zionist leader Abba Ahimeir, and positions him more accurately within the contexts of the Zionist Right, the period of his political activity, and the Zionist movement in general. Through an examination of his doctoral thesis on Oswald Spengler and first publications, I conclude that Spenglerian theory exerted a fundamental influence upon Ahimeir throughout his entire life, and that his embrace of Fascist ideology began six years earlier than is generally accepted. I thus contend that Ahimeir's ideological path was already set in 1924, far earlier than is generally believed. A survey of his journalistic output, while a member of the moderately socialist party HaPoel HaTzair, shows that Ahimeir's apparent shift from Left to Right was not the radical defection that it is currently considered to be. A study of primary source archival material allows me to demonstrate that as a leader of the Revisionist Youth Group Betar and instructor in its Leadership Training School, Ahimeir's ideological influence upon Revisionist youth was far greater than is commonly accepted. A discussion of more general intellectual-historical concepts - Spenglerian-, Fascist-, and Revolutionary- theory, Jewish Völkisch-nationalism, secular Messianism - allows me to re-weight certain ideological outlooks in the current body of research regarding Ahimeir, the Revisionist Party, and the Zionist Left. Notably, I suggest we view Ahimeir as a 'Revolutionary' who used Fascism merely as a modus operandi in the service of his revolution. This particularistic ideological outlook was exemplified in his semi-clandestine, anti-British resistance group Brit HaBiryonim, as a thorough examination of court documents from the group's trial demonstrates. The study provides the first intellectual biography of one of the most influential figures on the Zionist Right, and rights some historical wrongs that exist within Revisionist- and Labour-Zionist myths, and indeed, Israeli collective memory.

Stankiewicz, Lukasz. "L' abus de convention fiscale internationale." Lyon 3, 2009. https://scd-resnum.univ-lyon3.fr/in/theses/2009_in_stankiewicz_l.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Taxpayers can abuse double tax treaties. The primary form of abuse is treaty shopping which defeats the bilateral nature of tax treaties. The concept of tax treaty abuse needs to receive a firm theoretical basis. A comparative study of its mechanism and its elements reveals that tax treaty abuse, form of evasion of law, can be defined as a situation where a taxpayer intentionally invokes a tax treaty in a manner that frustrates the spirit and purpose of the treaty (invoked rule) in order to avoid the application of the domestic rule which gives rise to tax liability (avoided rule). A conflict of norms can arise if the treaty benefit claimed by the taxpayer is disallowed by operation of a domestic anti-avoidance rule. However, the risk of incompatibility is limited due to the deficient nature of tax treaties, heavily relying on domestic law for their application, as well as to the duty to interpret treaties in good faith. The attitude of states with respect to tax treaty abuse is incoherent. On one hand, the number and the diversity of anti-abuse rules becomes ever greater while at the same time there are less business reasons to engage in treaty shopping because of the gradual erosion of source taxation. On the other hand, states do not fight treaty abuse with equal determination. In fact, the United States are the only country to engage in a coherent line of policy against treaty abuse through specific anti-abuse rules

Abstract:
Drought and other abiotic stresses have major negative effects on agricultural productivity. The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) regulates many responses to environmental stresses and can be used to improve crop performance under stress. ABA levels rise in response to diverse abiotic stresses to coordinate physiological and metabolic responses that help plants survive stressful environments. In all land plants, ABA receptors are responsible for initiating a signaling cascade that leads to stomata closure, growth arrest and large-scale changes in transcript levels required for stress tolerance. We wanted to test the meaning of root derived ABA signaling in drying soil on water balance. To this end we generated transgenic tomato lines in which ABA signaling is initiated by a synthetic agonist- mandipropamid. Initial study using a Series of grafting experiments indicate that that root ABA signaling has no effect on the immediate regulation of stomata aperture. Once concluded, these experiments will enable us to systematically dissect the physiological role of root-shoot interaction in maintaining the water balance in plants and provide new tools for targeted improvement of abiotic stress tolerance in crop plants.

Yalovsky, Shaul, and Julian Schroeder. The function of protein farnesylation in early events of ABA signal transduction in stomatal guard cells of Arabidopsis. United States Department of Agriculture, January 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2002.7695873.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Loss of function mutations in the farnesyltransferase β subunit gene ERA1 (enhanced response to abscisic acid), cause abscisic acid hypersensitivity in seedlings and in guard cells. This results in slowed water loss of plants in response to drought. Farnesyltransferase (PFT) catalyses the attachment of the 15-carbon isoprenoid farnesyl to conserved cysteine residues located in a conserved C-terminal domain designated CaaX box. PFT is a heterodimeric protein comprised of an a and b sununits. The a subunit is shared between PFT and geranylgeranyltransferase-I (PGGTI) which catalyses the attachemt of the 20-carbon isoprenoid geranylgeranyl to CaaX box proteins in which the last amino acid is almost always leucine and in addition have a polybasic domain proximal to the CaaL box. Preliminary data presented in the proposal showed that increased cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration in stomal guard cells in response to non-inductive ABA treatements. The goals set in the proposal were to characterize better how PFT (ERA1) affects ABA induced Ca2+ concentrations in guard cells and to identify putative CaaX box proteins which function as negative regulators of ABA signaling and which function is compromised in era1 mutant plants. To achieve these goals we proposed to use camelion Ca2+ sensor protein, high throughput genomic to identify the guard cell transcriptome and test prenylation of candidate proteins. We also proposed to focus our efforts of RAC small GTPases which are prenylated proteins which function in signaling. Our results show that farnesyltransferaseprenylates protein/s that act between the points of ABA perception and the activation of plasma membrane calcium influx channels. A RAC protein designated AtRAC8/AtRop10 also acts in negative regulation of ABA signaling. However, we discovered that this protein is palmitoylated and not prenylated although it contains a C-terminal CXXX motif. We further discovered a unique C-terminal sequence motif required for membrane targeting of palmitoylatedRACs and showed that their function is prenylation independent. A GC/MS based method for expression in plants, purification and analysis of prenyl group was developed. This method would allow highly reliable identification of prenylated protein. Mutants in the shared α subunit of PFT and PGGT-I was identified and characterized and was shown to be ABA hypersensitive but less than era1. This suggested that PFT and PGGT-I have opposing functions in ABA signaling. Our results enhanced the understanding of the role of protein prenylation in ABA signaling and drought resistance in plants with the implications of developing drought resistant plants. The results of our studies were published 4 papers which acknowledge support from BARD.
