Abstract:
This article is a contribution to reflection on the question of land markets in Africa. Based on a case study of Abure society (Côte d'Ivoire), the article emphasizes, first, the relation between the intra-family dimension of land rights and the functioning of the land lease market. Particular attention is paid to intra-family land tensions induced by the land lease market, and their repercussions in the form of inter-community conflict reflecting the ethnic-national basis of the land lease market (with autochthonous Abure lessors and Burkinabe tenants). Second, emphasis is placed on the socio-political dimension of land tenancy relationships. The article is based on a deciphering of the land rights and land tenure practices within Abure family groups, and of a 2001 conflict which set Abure young men against Burkinabe pineapple growers. Beyond the inter-community conflict surrounding land, the article reveals an intergenerational conflict within Abure society itself between social juniors and the elders who manage family land, regarding the delegation of rights to lease out family land and the distribution of land lease (rental) income.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the microbiological contamination of cabbage, lettuce, and scallions sold in Abura and Kotokuraba markets in Cape Coast, Ghana. These vegetables were analyzed for the presence and levels of microorganisms using standard microbiological procedures. Results revealed bacterial and fungal contaminations of the vegetables from Abura and Kotokuraba markets. Mean bacterial counts recorded in Nutrient Agar, for example, from Kotokuraba market were 1.93x108, 1.23x108, and 1.17x108 cfu/ml for cabbage, lettuce and scallion, respectively, higher than mean bacterial counts recorded from Abura market at 9.9x107, 2.8x107, and 6.60x107 cfu/ml for cabbage, lettuce and scallion, respectively. Conversely, the mean fungal counts for cabbage, lettuce and scallion were higher at Abura market than Kotokuraba market. Bacteria isolated from the vegetables include Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Salmonella spp., Serratia marcescens, and Staphylococcus, whereas fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Candida, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Rhodotorula were isolated. These results indicate that the vegetables are significantly contaminated, and have poor microbiological quality that could potentially result in outbreak of foodborne illnesses. Contaminations of the vegetables were due to poor pre- and post-harvest handling practices. The implications of findings of this study on tourism and hospitality industries in Cape Coast are discussed. Keywords: cabbage, food microbiology, foodborne microorganisms, Ghana, lettuce, scallion

Abstract:
The budgets of nutrients and major ions between the input flux from atmospheric deposition and the output flux to streams were measured on three forested small mountain watersheds, Aburahi-N (23.8 ha), Aburahi-S (3.8 ha, 2 km south from Aburahi-N) and Myokoji (1.77 ha, 28 km northwest from Aburahi-N), located at 34-35 N and 136 E around the central part of Japan. The bedrock of the watersheds is granite. The main vegetation of Aburahi-N and Aburahi-S was planted with Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc), and Myokoji was a secondary forest growing deciduous broadleaf trees and Japanese red pine. The chemical analysis of the stream waters was carried out once a week at Aburahi-N from 1987 to 1991, at Aburahi-S from 1995 to 1998, and at Myokoji from 1991 to 1993. Wet and dry depositions were collected every month at Aburahi-N. The annual mean concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) of the stream water of Aburahi-N, Aburahi-S and Myokoji were 0.408, 0.614 and 0.349 mg/l, respectively, total phosphorus (TP) contents were 0.0074, 0.0046 and 0.0096 mg/l, and the potassium ion (K+) contents were 0.83, 0.49 and 0.77 mg/l. The average annual output fluxes of TN from the watersheds of Aburahi-N, Aburahi-S and Myokoji were calculated to be 5.85, 4.10 and 12.7 kg/ha/y, TP 0.131, 0.045 and 0.280 kg/ha/y, K+ 9.63, 3.23 and 9.70 kg/ha/y, and discharge 1062, 508 and 1265 mm/y, respectively. The annual outputs tended to increase as the annual precipitation increased. The average annual input fluxes of TN, TP and K+ for six years from 1990-1998 were 12.5, 1.31 and 7.64 kg/ha/y, respectively, and the precipitation averaged 1449 (1019-1947) mm/y.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
1 ADD TO CART Sexual assault continues to be a major societal and criminal issue. Particularly detrimental is sexual assault committed against children. Children who experience a sexual assault are likely to suffer from multiple negative outcomes including increasing their risk for juvenile delinquency and mental health issues. A sexual assault kit is one tool that the criminal justice system uses to bring justice for victims and hold offenders accountable for their behaviour. It provides often vital evidence that can potentially be used in the prosecution of these cases. Yet it has become clear that many sexual assaults are never submitted to crime laboratories for processing. This paper explores previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits of child/adolescent victims. Characteristics of the victims, the case, and the police report are explored. Additionally, these kits are compared to kits with an adult victim to further our understanding of the problem. Findings include: over 20% of the unsubmitted sexual assault kits had a victim under 18, the highest number of unsubmitted kits for children were for victims between the ages of 15-17, the majority of child victims knew their offenders, and cases associated with child kits were more likely to be moved forward at the time of the original incident (without the kit being submitted) than adult cases. Ultimately, the goal is to improve our overall response to all victims of sexual assault.

Abstract:
This study investigated change in behavioural manifestations of dynamic risk factors, in a sample of adult male sexual offenders who completed a custody-based treatment program. A checklist was developed to monitor and determine change in the frequency of behavioural manifestations of dynamic risk factors and prosocial equivalent behaviours. Offenders and custodial staff completed the checklist once each week for the duration of the offender’s period of treatment (range = 26-69 weeks, M = 45). Checklist scores were aggregated into domains based on the organisation of the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (Psychological Adjustment; Social Adjustment; Mental Disorder; Manageability). Change over time for individuals and the group was evaluated. Results showed an increase in positive behaviour in all domains, but there was only a decrease in risk-related manifestations in Psychological Adjustment, and this was only according to offenders. Offender self-report and staff observations were compared, revealing different perceptions of change. Using a behavioural checklist that incorporates self-report and observer data to measure change may provide a comprehensive measure of change over time.

Researchers agree that one of the most important aspects of psychopathy is lack of empathy. Literature relating to psychopathy and its central components focuses on boys and men, while overlooking girls and women. This issue is partially due to the measurement tools and beliefs about sex-based expression. Previous studies focus primarily on empathy as it relates to antisocial behavior and abuse but is deficient in gender differences and antecedents. This study seeks to fill these voids by examining factors that may distinctly affect male and female empathy levels. The current study used data from the 6th wave of the National Youth Survey to examine empathy levels of 1,452 youths ranging in age from 17 – 24 years. Findings reveal that several variables have a significant impact on empathy levels. Furthermore, analysis shows that the severity of the impact differs depending upon respondent gender. This sheds light on the contrast between male and female empathy levels and invites further investigation into the factors which play a role in the developm

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of national lockdowns has generated significant changes in the citizenry's material realities. Although the efficacy of lockdown is yet to be determined, emerging evidence points to a rise in unintended harms, such as increased child abuse and neglect. Indeed, reported incidences of child abuse in many countries across the world have increased as at-risk children are confined to their dwelling for significant periods of time with a violent perpetrator. Drawing on recently developed theories that indicate a mediated causal link between childhood trauma and a commitment to violent behaviour in later life, particularly in young men, this article claims lockdown may be an unintended ‘violence generating mechanism’ that might potentially manifest itself in increased violent outbursts in the future. First, the article briefly outlines how lockdowns have impacted upon societies. It then explores the statistical upsurge in child abuse and neglect, including afar as Croatia, South Africa, New Zealand, China, Uganda, Nepal and the United Kingdom. The paper closes with a discussion of the empirical evidence that demonstrates a link between childhood trauma and violence in later life, concluding that lockdowns may act as a ticking time bomb of future harm.

Abstract:
In response to differential clinical presentations of survivors of multiple or chronic exposure to trauma, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) has been included in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). A growing body of research has explored the prevalence of CPTSD in a range of populations, yet its prevalence in adults diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) has been subject to limited evaluation, including in individuals requiring specialist inpatient care. The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) was administered to 42 females with primary diagnoses of EUPD admitted to a specialist DBT service. Twenty-eight (66.8%) participants met full diagnostic criteria for either PTSD (11.9%, n=5) or CPTSD (54.8%, n=23). Additionally, PTSD and CPTSD symptomatology were highly prevalent in participants who did not meet the functional impairment criteria. Significant differences in the prevalence of CPTSD were found, dependent on whether a measure of functional impairment was included. This is the first study to explore the prevalence of CPTSD in an inpatient EUPD sample, using diagnostic thresholds. The findings highlight the importance of attending to trauma as well as EUPD-related needs. Theoretical, clinical and future research implications are discussed.

Abstract:
This paper considers the role of media narratives and political discourse in the immigration-crime nexus by exploring, as a case study, the recent experience of the South Sudanese community in Australia. Over recent years this cohort of relatively new arrivals have been subjected to a raft of negative media coverage and political commentary. This paper deliberates on the narrative of this African community group and their subsequent portrayal, and considers if it is both legitimate and accurate. At a time when many Australians see the benefits of immigration, this paper examines the role the media and politics plays in undermining this community sentiment, reflecting a level of abuse by the most powerful in society towards the some of the least powerful.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the most serious challenges that city dwellers face in a developing nation is unsatisfactory solid waste management. This research investigates the impact of entrepreneurial innovation in solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, federal capital city of Nigeria. The study employs a survey approach entailing the use of questionnaire for primary data collection. The data collected were analysed using a regression statistical technique. The findings of the study reveal that entrepreneurial activities can be used to enhance competencies in sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Specifically, we found that entrepreneurial innovation has a significant positive effect on solid waste recycling capacity (p < 0.01). The study concludes that entrepreneurial innovation will encourage efficiency and effectiveness in solid waste recycling practices in Abuja, Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommends that the government should put in place structures that encourage entrepreneurial innovation in solid management so as to enhance the sustainable solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, Nigeria. Solid waste recycling has long been thought of as playing an important role in solid waste management. This research affirms that entrepreneurial innovation would aid the improvement of the solid waste recycling capacity thereby optimising the chances of achieving sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Currently there is a paucity of studies that examine the effects of entrepreneurial innovation specifically on solid waste recycling and sustainable development in Abuja, Nigeria. This study contributes an important additional dimension in the search for sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria.

Abstract:
In 2000, Federal Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (MFCT), Abuja launched a mass housing scheme (MHS) under the platform of a public-private partnership (PPP). This paper reports an evaluation of this reform in order to understand the scheme's impact on the cohort of low-income group (LIG) in Abuja, Nigeria. The study explores the multiple data sources available, including literature and policy material and empirical evidence collected through structured and semi-structured questionnaires. The findings of the study suggest that the scheme did not significantly improve the housing status of LIG. The research suggests that the cohorts' history of exclusion in housing delivery in the Abuja deepened further due to partly an inadequate mortgage infrastructure to support their participation. Moreover, with poor scheme implementation, it is clear that the scheme strengthened the polarised position of the Abuja with respect to housing which runs counter to the stated policy objective to provide all Nigerians with decent and affordable housing. The paper concludes by showing the wider implication of the contemporary approach of the housing strategy in Abuja and Nigeria in general.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The present study consists of assessing the effects of Abura heavy crude petroleum oil (AC) and Oredo light crude petroleum oil (OC) on the survival of Paspalum vaginatum. The effectiveness of two dispersants, Goldcrew and Corexit 9527, in removing oil from P. vaginatum previously sprayed with either Abura of Oredo crude petroleum oil was assessed, the effect of time of dispersant application following crude oil pollution on growth and survival of P. vaginatum was also studied. Plants treated with AC recovered after 8 days while 100% mortality was recorded for plants treated with OC + Corexit 9527 (O24C0 and O48C0). Corexit 9527 was not effective in ameliorating the lethal effects of Oredo crude oil. Although, P. vaginatum recovery was apparent 70 days after AC pollution and after cleaning with Goldcrew (A24GCand A48GC), both treatments resulted in significant (P <0.05) lower biomass and stem density compared to control. It is concluded that plants cleaned with Goldcrew dispersant after 24 h recovered faster than those cleaned after 48 h. Exposure of P. vaginatum to light crude oil or light crude oil + Corexit 9527 is detrimental and can inhibit growth where as it will recover when exposed to heavy crude oil or heavy crude oil + Goldcrew.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT To determine the prevalence of diseases of the upper respiratory tract and associated factors in the Colombian Creole Horse Valley Aburrá in 2015, a random sampling of 15 farms in southern Aburrá Valley under different management conditions was performed. A total of 105 CCC underwent general clinical examination, respiratory endoscopic evaluation and a detailed inspection of housing conditions and management. A low prevalence of upper respiratory tract diseases was observed, including Pharyngeal Lymphoid Hyperplasia 38.1%, Recurrent Laryngeal Neurophaty 12.38%, Dorsal Displacement of the Soft Palate 7.62%, and presence of tracheal secretions not associated with a specific pathology. A bivariate analysis showed association between tracheal secretions and frequency of training per week (OR = 9.86), duration of the training sessions (OR = 5.55) and inadequate ventilation of the stable (OR = 10.52). Association between HLR and inadequately ventilated barns was also observed (OR = 14.9). Logistic regression showed association between tracheal secretions and inadequate ventilation (OR = 7.18). We conclude that inadequate ventilation was the most important factor for the incidence of upper respiratory tract diseases in horses at the southern area of the Aburrá Valley.

Abstract:
A serological survey was carried out in four area councils (Abuja Municipal, Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali) of the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Newcastle disease virus in local chickens using haemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests. In each area council, one hundred sera samples were collected from apparently healthy local chickens with no history of vaccination. Abuja Municipal, Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali area councils had prevalence of 37, 44, 79, and 68%, respectively. The overall prevalence of antibody to Newcastle disease in the four area councils was 57%. This study shows that Newcastle disease virus is circulating in local chickens in the study area, and this may pose a serious threat to the commercial poultry industry within these four area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) where this study was carried out.
