The National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People released its Report on the Crisis in the Catholic Church in the United States on February 27, 2004. The report, commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, addressed the issue of the sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests, specifically its “causes and context.” It also addressed the closely related issue of the handling of accusations against accused priests by the church itself and particularly by its bishops. The problem of abuse and cover- ups was not confined to the United States. In March 2010, Pope Benedict XVI signed a pastoral letter about abusive priests in Ireland, and revelations of similar abuse have surfaced in Austria, Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and many other countries.

Abstract Although that roster betrays an obvious surrealist connection, the origins of window dressing date back to the mid-nineteenth century and the confluence of the museum, world’s fair, and department store. Aristide Bouciaut’s Bon Marché, the first department store, opened in Paris in 1852, only a year after London’s Crystal Palace Exhibition. Although its rival Le Louvre arrived three years later, this marketing innovation accelerated only when Bouciaut hired M. A. Laplance and Gustave Eiffel to build a store that would occupy an entire block. Eiffel had been involved with the 1867 Exposition; another Parisian fair, the Universal Exposition of 1889, which commissioned the tower bearing his name, would ensure his immortality. That fair would also inspire Frantz Jourdain, the architect of yet another major Parisian store, La Samaritaine, itself influenced by Zola’s fictional Au Bonheur des Dames. Zola’s famous opening describes the young provincial Denise standing awestruck before the store’s windows, “displaying symphonies of window-dressing . . . an orgy of colours.” Like the museum and world expositions, the department store depended on displaying merchandise in a style that Rosalind Williams has called “the chaotic-exotic”: “syncretism, anachronism, illogicality, flamboyance, childishness . . . an attempt to express visions of distant places in concrete terms.” With its mixture of 1940s slang and Victorian sets, its stuffed rooms and sudden plot turns, its child’s perspective on the world, Meet Me in St. Louis resembles a series of carefully designed shop windows.

Depuis 1945, la France tient une position singulière dans les débats sur l’architecture financière internationale. Elle porte, toutes tendances politiques confondues, l’idée d’une « régulation de la mondialisation », pour en combattre les abus (blanchiment, paradis fiscaux, défaillances des marchés financiers…) ou pour permettre le financement des pays en développement (aide publique, dette, droits de tirage spéciaux…), également confrontés aux défis climatiques. Cette vision, régulièrement formulée au plus haut niveau (celui du président de la République, de Charles de Gaulle à Emmanuel Macron), conduit la France à défendre les institutions économiques internationales (voire à en proposer la création de nouvelles), y compris parfois contre les États-Unis d’Amérique. Les évolutions géopolitiques des dernières années n’ont pas (encore ?) remis en cause cette fonction que s’est assignée la France.

Abstract:
In this essay, Laura Marcus explores the interconnections of shame, sexuality and the self in Woolf’s autobiographical writing. Drawing on Woolf’s epistolary discussions with Ethel Smyth as well as her speculation on the origins of shame in A Sketch of the Past, Marcus offers a new reading of Woolf’s ‘ancestral dread’ that goes beyond its plausible origin in her sexual abuse by her brother. Situating Woolf’s responses in relationship to a range of disciplines including psychoanalysis, philosophy as well as a tradition of confessional literature, Marcus therefore shows how Woolf uses the concept of ‘shame’ for a productive exploration of identity, memory and the exposure of the self’s intimacies in writing.

Abstract In her remarks before the American Medical Association on March 11, 1994, Donna Shalala, secretary of health and human services, condemned family violence and urged congressional passage of the Violence Against Women Act as a way to protect women against abuse. Budgeted at $1.8 billion over five years, the act would, among its many provisions, mandate the arrest of a suspected abuser, whether or not the victim pressed charges. “This country has to wake up to the very real consequences of this violence,” Shalala explained. “Domestic violence is terrorism-terrorism in the home-and that is what we should call it.” (The bill, part of the Omnibus Violent Crime Control and Prevention Act, was in fact passed by Congress and then signed into law by President Bill Clinton in September 1994.)
