The Higher Education sector has been through an array of changes, such as globalisation, massification, lack of job security, decolonisation and a number of technological advancements. These changes have impacted academic workload and have increased work pressure with resultant effects on family and work life balance. A review of the existing literature indicates a lack of clarity when it comes to the job demands and job resources inherent to the academic occupation. In order to determine the job demands and job resources of academics, a systematic review of empirical literature is warranted.

There is little empirical evidence linking academic demands or rigor to alcohol consumption by college students. In a 3-week daily study of fulltime college students at a public, residential campus in the United States, both current day and next day's academic demands were negatively related to alcohol consumption, and these relationships were mediated by daily academic effort. Academic demands on the previous day were not related to alcohol consumption, indicating that students do not engage in compensatory or celebratory drinking when demands end. Academic entrepreneurship literature has been covering a wide array of subjects, including studies on the role of universities in the process of transferring knowledge, the role of governments in spin-off processes and on the creation of new companies (start-up) and also with several scopes of research, such as the role of university policies in the creation, development and relative performance of spin-offs. These new companies are an important mechanism for transferring knowledge, but their performance/survival rate is considered low. Despite their importance in knowledge transfer, there are still few studies on this mechanism, which demands further research. In this chapter, the aim is to understand the phenomenon of academic entrepreneurship in its diverse dimensions, the process and the different mechanisms of knowledge transfer; and to ultimately understand the role of academic spin-offs in the conversion of knowledge produced in universities.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the curious disappearance of the academic voice, and its implications for those teaching in Higher Education institutions. Current policy on Higher Education constructs academics as providers of a service to the student consume via mechanisms which explicitly incorporate metrics of student satisfaction and experience into the governance of academic practice. The chapter explores how the threat of the litigious student consumer in a competitive market is wielded to discipline the academic. While the imposition of market forces and new forms of governance on academic practice represents an important constraint, the process examined in this chapter is more complex: academics internalise the demands of the new Higher Education, and the sentiment that students’ expectations and experiences pose a threat to their academic practice. Moreover, the split between teaching and research is leading to an increasingly instrumental approach to both. Finally, the chapter discusses how the notion of Higher Education as an extension of schooling has gained traction among the academic community, and where this logic is resisted.
