Abstract:
Purpose: School district superintendents say politics is the number one factor limiting their performance, yet research provides limited guidance on navigating the political dynamics of district improvement. State takeovers and district-wide turnaround efforts tend to involve particularly heated and polarized debates. Massachusetts’ 2012 takeover of the Lawrence Public Schools provides a rare case of state takeover and district turnaround that both resulted in substantial early academic improvements and generated limited controversy. Method: To describe the stakeholder response and learn why the reforms were not more contentious, I analyzed press coverage of the Lawrence schools from 2007 to 2015, public documents, and two secondary sources of survey data on parent and educator perceptions of the schools. I also interviewed turnaround and stakeholder group leaders at the state and district level regarding the first 3 years of reform. Findings: I find that the local Lawrence context and broader statewide accountability system help explain the stakeholder response. Furthermore, several features of the turnaround leaders’ approach improved the response and reflected a “third way” orientation to transcending polarizing political disagreement between educational reformers and traditionalists. Examples include leaders’ focus on differentiating district–school relations, diversifying school management, making strategic staffing decisions, boosting both academics and enrichment, and producing early results while minimizing disruption. Implications: The findings provide guidance for state-level leaders on developing accountability systems and selecting contexts that are ripe for reform. The results also provide lessons for district- and school-level leaders seeking to implement politically viable improvement of persistently low-performing educational systems.

Abstract:
Adolescent pregnancy is a significant societal issue that results in lost opportunities for teenage girls in both developed and developing countries. This phenomenological research study explored the lived experience of adolescent mothers during their college years. Eight participants were asked, via unstructured interview, to share their experiences as college students in the midst of pregnancy. Data was analyzed using Collaizi’s method, while member checks and expert audits of interview outputs were done to ensure trustworthiness. Results show that the participants went through several stages in their plight: they faced the complexities of adolescent pregnancy alongside college education; dealt with life and educational conflicts; appreciated the importance of education; found the resolve to carry on for their child; and dreamt of a better future for their families. These findings were clustered into themes and related to Parson’s Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency theory, as adolescent pregnancy paved the way for teenagers to assimilate society’s expectations of responsible adulthood. Consistent with academic literature, the participants’ experiences show that adolescent mothers are vulnerable in the education setting, and need proper guidance to achieve their full potential. This research can serve as groundwork for initiating several educational reforms. A multicomponent intervention program was developed that is rooted in school and community partnerships.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) with a focus on academic skills and conduct problems and to increase parents' educational skills in managing aggressive and oppositional behaviour in a subsequent parent training (PMT). For this purpose 18 children with a diagnosis of ADHD combined type participated in the study. In an A-B study design the effects of a 12-week treatment phase (6 weeks CBT; 6 weeks PMT) were compared with a preceding 4-week baseline. Core symptoms of ADHD, conduct problems and individual problem behaviour were assessed by weekly administration of parent and teacher questionnaires. The results indicate a significant and generalized reduction of ADHD core symptoms, conduct problems and homework problems during CBT at home and at school. PMT resulted in a further amelioration of the cited symptoms. We conclude that CBT may be a promising component in the treatment of ADHD provided that aspects of generalization are considered during the treatment. PMT may be a useful adjunct in most cases as it is effective in situations where the ADHD child still has problems of self-guidance.

The study concluded that school counseling programs are commendable because they increase students’ academic achievement. However the study has established that school counselors should be equipped with appropriate counseling skills, their workload should be reduced and that school administration should encourage greater cooperation between teacher counselors and other members of staff as well as with parents and guardians, in order to make the counselors effort more productive. Further studies should be conducted to investigate how the school administration can be actively involved in supporting counseling programs in schools.

Abstract:
This article investigates National Defense Education Act and National Defense Education Act-related calls in the late 1950s for the training of guidance counselors, an emergent profession that was to play an instrumental role in both the measuring and placement of students in schools by “intelligence” or academic “ability”. In analyzing this mid-century push for more guidance counseling in schools, this article will first explore a foundational argument for the fairness of intelligence testing made by Educational Testing Service psychometrician William Turnbull in 1951, and then later taken up and employed by other National Defense Education Act-era advocates of testing and grouping. Secondly, this analysis will proceed to National Defense Education Act expert testimony, examining here assertions of the necessity of guidance counseling in schools, and an emergent and shared vision articulating the role guidance counseling was supposed to play in school life. A pattern or structure to this vision emerges here. According to its advocates, guidance counseling would not only inform the self-understanding of the measured individual, but it would also work to condition the ideology of individual intelligence across numerous layers of social life around the student: through peer group, through teachers and school administrators, and finally through home, family, and the wider community.

Abstract:
Two of the guiding principles of gifted program standards are that gifted learners must be provided differentiated guidance efforts and affective curriculum (Nevitt, 2001), yet many gifted and talented students are receiving inadequate social, emotional, and career counseling. There are many reasons for this, including a shortage of personnel trained in working with gifted students, emphasis on academic achievement and tests scores, and the belief that gifted students can manage on their own. In many schools, guidance or counseling of students is the sole domain of professional counselors; however, most school counselors do not have training in gifted education and because they are burdened with large caseloads, administrative duties (i.e., scheduling), and crisis counseling, they often must function in a triage mode, attending to only the most serious problems with little time left for anything else.

Abstract:
Medical students as early adults have different challenges from high school, especially medical students. Based on the results of the previous study, it was found that medical students experienced anxiety, stress, and even depression with various levels. Ranging from mild to moderate-severe. Various efforts have been made, starting with increasing early detection of students from the first year, to the training stage to increase the role of academic advisory lecturers, to solving student problems that are sent to the counseling guidance section. The purpose of this training is that peer guidance services can be used as a form of guidance and counseling services provided to adolescents or early adults who have low social interaction. Before the training, it was started with the selection stage for peer counselors using an empathy questionnaire, based on the results of the questionnaire 28 students were found to be candidates for peer counselors. The training begins with a pretest then presentation material and case discussions then end with a post-test. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, there was an increase in knowledge about peer counselors, their roles, the benefits of counseling, and media that can be used as promotions as part of the peer counselor's duties. It is hoped that from this training, students can increase the role of assistance to students from the early stages so that severe cases experienced by students both in terms of academic and non-academic can be resolved.

Abstract:
People's personality types are combinations of differences wherein characteristics, behavior, and thoughts work dynamically. Each one's experiences with uncontrollable and disappointing events may lead them to feelings of helplessness and make them realize and choose not to change the situation. As a school guidance and counseling staff, the researcher, happens to have one-on-one or group sessions, testing, and surveys to students in senior high school, which transpired concerns regarding the academic, student-teacher relationship, peers, and others. The student's ability to deal with the challenges they encountered triggered the conduct of this study since some know how to manage their concerns, but some feel helpless and fail to try. In this event, it may result in poor performance in school and the students' negative behavior. Thus, the study aims to determine the personality type and degree of learned helplessness of senior high school students of a Catholic school in Bacolod City when they are taken as a whole and grouped according to sex, strand, and academic performance. Abstract:
Purpose: This article aims to (1) systematically examine the development of career guidance practices in Hong Kong over the past 40 years, (2) discuss developmental attention to the career-related self-concept of diverse learners, and (3) propose a multidimensional model of self-concept by integrating the career-related domains with recent advances in self-concept research pertaining to students’ in-school and post-school outcomes. Design/Approach/Methods: This article charts the developmental trend of career guidance and counseling (CGC) over more than 40 years in Hong Kong. The article also examines key findings relating to self-concept research made in the fields of education and career counseling in the past 50 years. Findings: For 50 years, Hong Kong has progressively recognized the importance of CGC. The government’s continued determination to refine its policies and practices in this domain was succinctly highlighted in the Chief Executive’s 2018 policy address. However, many challenges pertaining the professional competence of career guidance teachers and the ability of school administrators to manage the paradigm shift from informal to formal career guidance and counseling practices (CGCPs) remain. Meanwhile, the effects of these CGCPs on students’ gains of career-related abilities and interests directly and indirectly remain under-researched. Originality/Value: This article integrates research into the developmental trend of career guidance practices in secondary schools and the study of academic self-concept. The article builds upon previous self-concept research by proposing an extended self-concept model that includes the career-related domain, setting a theoretical model for further research to explore. Finally, the article demonstrates the importance of tailoring career guidance activities in secondary education to reflect the diverse career-related self-concepts held by today’s students with diverse abilities.
