Abstract:
AbstractIn the weak evaluation state of Germany, full professors are involved in the traditional social governance partnership between the state, and the self-governing higher education institutions (HEI) and disciplinary associations. Literature suggests that formal and informal governance could trigger changes in academics’ publication behavior by valorizing certain publication outputs. In the article, secondary data from three surveys (1992, 2007 and 2018) is used for a multi-level study of the evolution of academics’ publication behavior. We find a trend toward the “model” of natural science publication behavior across all disciplines. On the organizational level, we observe that a strong HEI research performance orientation is positively correlated with journal articles, peer-reviewed publications, and co-publications with international co-authors. HEI performance-based funding is only positively correlated with the share of peer-reviewed publications. At the level of individual disciplines, humanities and social sciences scholars adapt to the peer-reviewed journal publication paradigm of the natural sciences at the expense of book publications. Considering how the academic profession is organized around reputation and status, it seems plausible that the academic profession and its institutional oligarchy are key contexts for the slow but steady change of academics’ publication behavior. The trend of changing academics’ publication behavior is partly related to HEI valorization of performance and (to a lesser extent) to HEI performance based-funding schemes, which are set by the strong academic profession in the weak evaluation state of Germany.

Abstract:
Throughout the reform process of the European university system, the importance of collaboration between actors at the academy and other areas of the economy and society are ever increasing, as evidenced by a growing number of co-authored articles and the number of citations to such works. This article analyses the characteristics of publications co-authored by Hungarian university researchers with non-academic partners. Scientometric indicators are used as primary methodological tools. Our sample was the publication output of 12 universities, which covers 90% of the university sphere’s publications, between 2001 and 2005 and was taken from the publications of Hungarian institutions of higher education appearing in the Web of Science database. The authors employed a new, important aspect in the cooperation activity of Hungarian universities: their connection with the non-academic partners. The selection and the institutional location of the co-authors resulted in an important database for further analysis. Based on the empirical analysis of the publication and citation performance data of 12 such universities the authors concluded that the proportion of citations to publications co-authored with either academic or non-academic partners is significantly higher for international partners than it is for Hungarian ones. For one publication, the proportion of citations to articles co-authored with foreign non-academic partners, such as firms or health care institutions, was five times higher than the number relating to papers co-authored with Hungarian firms or health care institutions. Higher citedness of the joint articles with the foreign country institutes than domestic partners are in harmony with observation in other countries. Generally the rate of the co-authored articles with non-academic partners is rather low. However it scatters to a great extent concerning the different universities. The presence or absence of medicine in the profile of the universities seems an important factor of that difference.

The academic editor has been, and still is, the gatekeeper of peer-reviewed scientific publications, by being whom, ultimately, defines whether or not a manuscript can be published. At a time of profound transformation in the context of scientific publication (digital publishing, open access, preprint, open peer review,...) and the expectations, inside and outside academia, towards academic publication, this perspective paper aims to add to the discussion of the (re)formulation of the academic editor’s role, considering that he or she, in this panoply of changes, continues, and will continue to be, the ultimate guardian of the scientific quality of what is published.

Abstract:
Abstract Based on data that tracks curriculum vitae (CV) and publication records as well as survey information from sociologists in German academia, we examine the effects of parenthood on the publication output of male and female academics that were present in German universities or research institutes in the year 2013. Results indicate that having children leads to a significant decline in the number of publications by women on average, while not affecting the number of publications by men. However, the gendered effect of children on productivity hardly mitigates differences in publication output between men and women, as women still publish about 20 per cent less than men after controlling for the adverse effects of children on productivity. The gendered effect of childbearing depends partly on prior levels of women’s academic achievements, suggesting a mechanism of performance-driven self-selection. Lower-performing women tend to suffer a stronger motherhood penalty than better performing women, while the publication output of successful women (who have been granted academic awards) is not reduced through childbirth. The results indicate that women are better at managing the ‘double burden’ of kids and career if external, award-giving committees have bestowed prestige upon them or indicated their potential for a scientific career.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of “publish-or-perish” in academia, spurred on by limited funding and academic positions, has led to increased competition and pressure on academics to publish. Publication pressure has been linked with multiple negative outcomes, including increased academic misconduct and researcher burnout. COVID-19 has disrupted research worldwide, leading to lost research time and increased anxiety amongst researchers. The objective of this study was to examine how COVID-19 has impacted perceived publication pressure amongst academic researchers in Canada. We used the revised Publication Pressure Questionnaire, in addition to Likert-type questions to discern respondents’ beliefs and concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on academic publishing. We found that publication pressure increased across academic researchers in Canada following the pandemic, with respondents reporting increased stress, increased pessimism, and decreased access to support related to publishing. Doctoral students reported the highest levels of stress and pessimism, while principal investigators had the most access to publication support. There were no significant differences in publication pressure reported between different research disciplines. Women and non-binary or genderfluid respondents reported higher stress and pessimism than men. We also identified differences in perceived publication pressure based on respondents’ publication frequency and other demographic factors, including disability and citizenship status. Overall, we document a snapshot of perceived publication pressure in Canada across researchers of different academic career stages and disciplines. This information can be used to guide the creation of researcher supports, as well as identify groups of researchers who may benefit from targeted resources.

Abstract:
Background For students entering a science PhD program, a tenure-track faculty research position is often perceived as the ideal long-term goal. A relatively small percentage of individuals ultimately achieve this goal, however, with the vast majority of PhD recipients ultimately finding employment in industry or government positions. Given the disparity between academic career ambitions and outcomes, it is useful to understand factors that may predict those outcomes. Toward this goal, the current study examined employment status of PhD graduates from biomedical sciences programs at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU AMC) and related this to metrics of predoctoral publication records, as well as to other potentially important factors, such as sex and time-since-degree, to determine if these measures could predict career outcomes. Methods Demographic information (name, PhD program, graduation date, sex) of CU AMC biomedical sciences PhD graduates between 2000 and 2015 was obtained from University records. Career outcomes (academic faculty vs. non-faculty) and predoctoral publication records (number and impact factors of first-author and non-first-author publications) were obtained via publicly available information. Relationships between predoctoral publication record and career outcomes were investigated by (a) comparing faculty vs. non-faculty publication metrics, using t-tests, and (b) investigating the ability of predoctoral publication record, sex, and time-since-degree to predict career outcomes, using logistic regression. Results Significant faculty vs. non-faculty differences were observed in months since graduation (p < 0.001), first-author publication number (p = 0.001), average first-author impact factor (p = 0.006), and highest first-author impact factor (p = 0.004). With sex and months since graduation as predictors of career outcome, the logistic regression model was significant (p < 0.001), with both being male and having more months since graduation predicting career status. First-author related publication metrics (number of publications, average impact factor, highest impact factor) all significantly improved model fit (χ2 < 0.05 for all) and were all significant predictors of faculty status (p < 0.05 for all). Non-first-author publication metrics did not significantly improve model fit or predict faculty status. Discussion Results suggest that while sex and months since graduation also predict career outcomes, a strong predoctoral first-author publication record may increase likelihood of obtaining an academic faculty research position. Compared to non-faculty, individuals employed in faculty positions produced more predoctoral first-author publications, with these being in journals with higher impact factors. Furthermore, first-author publication record, sex, and months since graduation were significant predictors of faculty status.

Abstract:
Publications on the fourth industrial revolution have skyrocketed since its establishment in 2011, both in academic and non-academic channels. Even though their measurable results have been published in non-academic material, especially among industry and business reports, within the academia it is still unclear how they are shown. This study aims to review and analyse the presence of industrial results within the academic context in a systematic manner by using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. The findings indicate an increase trend of this type of publication within the academia and further directions are suggested.

Muller, Theron. "An exploration of the experiences of Japan-based English language teachers writing for academic publication." Thesis, Open University, 2018. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57835/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines knowledge production practices within higher education by exploring the experiences of Japan-based language teachers writing for academic publication. Global practices of knowledge production as encoded in high-prestige published academic texts are of ongoing research interest. However, the exploration of author practices of writing for academic publication is a relatively new area of interest which I pursue in this thesis. The investigation of the writing for academic publication practices of Japan-based language teachers presented here helps to further expand the empirical research base and facilitates critical examination of the processes underlying writing for academic publication more broadly. This thesis is primarily based on research into the writing for publication practices of seven Japan-based authors, exploring why they write for academic publication and the practices that underlie their writing. The study employs an ethnographically informed methodology, incorporating multiple sources of data, including interviews, different versions of manuscripts submitted for publication, and the correspondence surrounding those manuscripts. These multiple sources facilitate exploring the complex processes behind writing for academic publication. Methodological tools from academic literacies and critical discourse analysis are applied to examine the authors' writing for academic publication practices and the processes their manuscripts go through during submission, review, and revision along their trajectories toward publication. This thesis illustrates the hidden complexities underlying academic knowledge production and examines the processes that shape what can be and is published. Key findings include the heterogeneity of writing for publication practices among the authors, the complexity of the trajectories of published manuscripts, and how the ideologies expressed in the authors' published manuscripts have been shaped by the review and revision process. A key contribution of the thesis is the methodology developed to investigate writing for academic publication practices, specifically regarding analysis of text publication trajectories.

Abstract:
Recent social theories related to academic literacies suggest that academic writing is not a mere text production but also an identity performance; hence, the notion of ‘authorial identity’ which involves two dimensions: the identity as academic authors (personal dimension) and the identity in writing (textual dimension). This thesis presents a study into the development of authorial identity among senior academic scholars on the trajectory of professorship through interviews and textual analysis of their published papers sampled across their early and later career. Three full professors from a UK university participated in this study, which was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, the professor participants’ accounts of their personal dimension of authorial identity through interviews signal common themes regarding the influence of the recent academic climate on their personal experience of growth in relation to their endeavour to improve the quality of their academic scholarship. In the second phase, the metadiscourse-based textual analysis of their sampled academic papers indicates several features of their identity performance in writing over time, which form the basis for the professor participants’ reflection on their textual dimension of authorial identity in the third phase in order to explore how their papers are embedded in and related to the social contexts of academic publication, especially the peer review process and the research assessment framework. The research findings from this study not only shed light on the developmental pathway in academic writing from the same academic scholars over time but also provide an illuminating account of how they have developed themselves as well as their writing on the trajectory of professorship. Further, the findings from all three research phases are discussed together in relation to relevant social theories to offer a theoretical contribution to the research area of academic literacies, writing, identity and scholarship.

Kiopa, Agrita. "The prevalence and productivity effects of close friendship in academic science." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/47695.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the prevalence of friendship and its effects on productivity in academic science from the perspective of networked social capital. It seeks to understand what friendship is in the context of the professional environment, what distinguishes it from other professional relationships, and how it affects the function and the outcomes of science. The study was motivated by the increased emphasis of collaboration as a means of fostering research competitiveness. The research reported here was performed as part of the National Science Foundation project "NETWISE I: Women in Science and Engineering: Network Access, Participation, and Career Outcomes" (Grant # REC-0529642). The importance of friendship in the context of academic science has often been implied and anecdotal, but it has not been elucidated or empirically tested. This dissertation seeks to address this gap. The unit of analysis in the model is the individual. The dissertation conceptualizes friendship as one aspect of a collaborative relationship and thus an important determinant of a scientist's social capability of pool relevant resources for the purposes of productivity. It hypothesizes that professional and personal roles form an integrative relationship within collaborative ties and that such complementarity benefits individual goal attainment, specifically with regard to publication productivity. The results of the study show that friendship has a strong positive effect on an individual's publication productivity, which is comparable to the effect of collaboration across organizational boundaries. The results also show that while friendship is fairly prevalent in collaborative relationships, some groups of scientists are more likely to have friends among their closest collaborators than other groups; that friendships differ from other collaborative relationships in that they more often form between individuals of the same status, provide a greater variety of productivity-relevant resources such as knowledge, advice, endorsements of one's reputation, and introductions to potential collaborators; and that friendship facilitates the mobilization of these resources from personal collaborative networks for productivity purposes.

Abstract:

AbstractThere is a famous proverb by Sir Francis Bacon, ‘reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man’. The first two are still easy to achieve but for the last, there are many barriers. It is a fact that only 10–30% of science research is published in journals [1]. A first-time publication is associated with fear and excitement for the author but it is the role of his mentor to guide him or her closely and make it an enjoyable experience (Fig. 31.1).

Abstract:
AbstractThe chapter presents a topic mining approach that can used for a scholarly data analysis. The idea here is that research topics can emerge through an analysis of epistemological aspects of scholar publications that are extracted from conventional publication metadata, such as the title, the author-assigned keywords, and the abstract. As a first contribution, we provide a conceptual analysis of research topic profiling according to the peculiar behaviours/trends of a given topic along a considered time interval. As a further contribution, we define a disciplined approach and the related techniques for topic mining based on the use of publication metadata and natural language processing (NLP) tools. The approach can be employed within a variety of topic analysis issues, such as country-oriented and/or field-oriented research analysis tasks that are based on scholarly publications. In this direction, to assess the applicability of the proposed techniques for use in a real scenario, a case study analysis based on two publication datasets (one national and one worldwide) is presented.

Abstract:
Various models of editorial board members’ publishing in parent journal are examined. Editorial membership makes an important stage of the academic career; hence, this requires careful bibliometric examination of editor researchers’ publication strategies. We examine the popular approaches of editors-in-chief toward publications by their editorial board members’ in the parent journal, in the range from encouragement to prohibition. Using a sample of Russian library and information science journals, we demonstrate that the publication models of editorial board members depend on the journal’s rank.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Abstract:
The article desribes the main features of the publishing activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv from the end of the 1990s and in the first two decades of the 21st century. The aim of the author was to show this activity with the help of stages of formation of the Publishing Centre at the University. For this purpose, he used historical method, the methods of analysis, synthesis, content analysis etc. One of the important landmarks of the end of the 20th century in the publishing activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv which has its traditions in the past was the foundation of the mentioned Publishing Centre on the basis of Editing and Publishing Department, Machine Offset and Polygraphic Laboratories. This process was favoured by the administration of the University which supported the transfer of printing base to another building of the University. Professionals with respective qualification level and experience in the sphere of publishing and printing were gathered there. Another stage of the development of the Publishing Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was the creation in 2006 of the Publishing Board within the University which became a generator of ideas on the development of scientific book publishing and actively cooperated with printing enterprises of Ukraine (the author of the article was a member of this board). The administration of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv provided a substantial financial support for publication of educational and scientific literature of different genres and on different topics for educational needs both of the University itself and Ukrainian educational sphere in general. As a result of active publishing activity, the Publishing Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv since 1996 has published more than 4.5 million copies of publications whose authors are members of the academic community of the University. Among the significant publications of the Publication Centre of the last two decades the article notes Ivan Franko (10 volumes, authors – R. Horak and Ya. Hnativ), Encyclopedia. The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (2 volumes), Social Geography (2 books, author – Prof. O. Shabliy) and others. The results of the activities of the Publication Centre of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv were demonstrated during participation at Book Forums and other events in the publication and printing sphere. This article permits researchers in Humanities to analyze and evaluate the achievements and at the same time problems of the scientific publication activity of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Abstract:
The author of the study analyzes and determines the features of the introduction of new forms of education in the highest historical pedagogical institutions of Ukraine in the early twentieth century. In particular: colloquiums, excursions, rehearsals, the organization of scientific sections of students and societies. Colloquiums were held to discuss the creative work of students. Proseminars prepared students for participation in seminars. Excursions prepared students for scientific work and taught them to collect information about historical monuments. Interviews and rehearsals took an important place in the revitalization of academic activity of students in universities. During the interviews, students learned to express their thoughts freely. Rehearsals were used as a means of monitoring the progress of students. An important component of the preparation of the future teacher of history was the organization of scientific student sections and societies. The main forms of their work were: the discussion of scientific reports, the publication of periodicals, the creation of libraries, museums, etc. The most talented students took part in scientific sections and societies. Thus, higher education institutions created prerequisites for the education of gifted young people. The publication also reveals the specifics of the practical training of students. The practical component included not only pedagogical, but also museum practice. In addition, pedagogical institutions of higher education conducted educational excursions, literary and musical evenings, organized social, sanitary and charitable activities. The author of the publication not only explores the features of various forms of education, but also the possibility of using them in the practice of the modern higher pedagogical institution in Ukraine.

Abstract:
Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated. Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention funding provided by some institutions to support their faculty in pursuing dissemination of research in Open Access (OA) journals? This Open Educational Resource (OER) will present an overview of the OA landscape and provide learners with tools to develop their own inquiries into the inequities present within the OA publishing industry. All assignments include suggested grading rubrics and build upon one another in a cumulative manner.

Panko, Mary. Undergraduate Research: A Source for Faculty Publications? Unitec ePress, April 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/ocds.002.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last two decades undergraduate students have been encouraged to problem solve in ‘the real world’ in order to construct their own subject knowledge. This generally means that students are required to carry out research in their disciplines, a process which inevitably leads to the production of quantities of data. Once their findings are reported back to faculty and have been graded, they are largely ignored, as they are ‘only’ the product of undergraduate research. However, since 2000 there has been a move to bring this type of work into the open through undergraduate research conferences in order to benefit both the students and their institutions. Nevertheless, except for a few publications within medical teaching, faculty themselves have not widely used this data for their own research, perhaps fearing its potential lack of authenticity or credibility. This paper explores a case study to examine the validity and reliability of students’ findings and considers whether the observations obtained by students can or should be made into academic publications by staff. This study comprised four cohorts, totaling 109 second-year undergraduate automotive students, who had made repeat visits to a number of automotive workshops and reviewed the workshops’ activities with a particular focus on customer service, health and safety, and waste management. Analysis of the top 25% of students’ reports revealed that a number of compliance failures were appearing on such a regular basis that these findings should be brought to the attention of the automotive industry. The paper concludes with a recommendation that under carefully controlled conditions, academics should draw on this hitherto ignored seam of research data.
