Abstract:
The image of the seven liberal arts, that is, the disciplines of the trivium – grammar, rhetoric, dialectics and quadrivium – arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music, and a number of sciences, which do not belong to the list of artes liberales, were among the most widespread personifications in European art of the 16th – 18th centuries. The early examples of the liberal arts’ iconography emerged during the early Middle Ages, gradually not only additional variants of their image appear, but also completely new personifications, which reflect dynamic changes in different areas of natural and exact sciences of the early modern age. The first known allegorical depictions of sciences in Ukrainian art belong to this period of the encyclopedic systematization of allegories, which was also a period, marked by coexistence of numerous iconographic versions of each allegory. Despite being innumerous, these preserved artworks provide a basis for elucidating the role of Western European examples in the figurative system of Ukrainian engraving of the 17th century. Objectives. The objective of this article is to analyze the features of the iconography of sciences’ personifications in Ukrainian panegyric engraving of the end of the 16th and 17th centuries on the basis of comparison with the main iconographic variants of the allegories of artes liberales and a number of other scientific disciplines in Western European graphic arts and theoretical treatises of that period. Methods. The current research requires use of several methods of art historical analysis, among them context analysis, which aims at distinguishing the function and significance of the artistic work in the period it was created. The central methodological approach to the study of the personifications of sciences is the iconographic analysis, which allows to highlight the peculiar features of each figure, considering their attributes and taking into account their possible relations with other visual images and texts. We also rely on the comparative analysis to show similarities and distinct features of personifications in Ukrainian and Western European engravings. Results. Personifications of sciences in Ukrainian engraving of the late 16th – 17th century can be seen on the title pages of scientific treatises, in illustrations of panegyric old-printed books and academic theses. The identification of these allegories on the title page engravings in treatises is a relatively simple task, despite the fact that the ways of their depiction vary from total absence of attributes to complex examples of combinative iconography, when the title of the publication is the only definite key to interpret the image correctly. The study of sciences’ allegories in panegyric illustration should imply the principle of correspondence between text and images. Since the panegyrical text is based on a clear scheme of rhetorical “places” (loci), the visual narrative is in certain way connected with this scheme – allegories of sciences correlate with loci victus (way of life) and studia (intellectual activity). In panegyric old-print illustration, which also may contain a portrait of the person praised, two approaches towards the selection of allegories can be noted. Artists usually depict a single figure (mainly Rhetoric or some of the exact sciences) or just their symbols, combining them with military trophies and insignia of secular power. Otherwise, they included personifications of those disciplines, which represented the intellectual activities of the portrayed person. Panegyric “Tentoria venienti” (1646) embodies the variation of the first approach, with the depiction of allegories holding the attributes of artes liberales. In the academic thesis prints, even if the panegyrical aspect clearly dominates, the allegories of sciences are less connected with the person to whom the engraving is dedicated and in most cases visualize the topic of the dispute. However, one of the most common topics was “ex universa philosophia”, the title, that often comprised not only numerous philosophical disciplines but also politics, economics, physiology, psychology etc. Therefore, it is possible to determine which sciences were present on the engraving either due to accompanying signatures, which can be rather rarely spotted or on the basis of a thorough comparative analysis of different versions of allegories’ depiction and their attributes. Distinctive iconographic types of personifications can be specific to the works by certain artist – they appear repeatedly with little or no changes in general appearance and attributes – as it is seen in the works of A. and L. Tarasevych and during the next period – those of I. Mygura. Conclusions. Early examples of personifications of sciences in Ukrainian visual tradition include both figures with a scarce number of attributes, as well as more complex variants, which demonstrate the influence of the iconography of virtues. In both cases, among visual examples for Ukrainian artists we can name the iconographic types of the allegories of various sciences, which originated in Netherlandish and German engraving of the 16th and 17th centuries. As a rule, allegorical images of sciences were not supposed to provide several levels of interpretation, so they become objects of mainly iconographic, rather than semiotic analysis. But in the 17th century Ukraine they were significant in verbal discourse as well – images of sciences (simply mentioned or presented through the rhetorical device of prosopopoeia) are associated with the idea of revival of schooling and academic education, repeated in panegyric and polemical literature by the authors of the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium circle.

Abstract:
Abstract In academic thesis prints (dissertationes) from Early Modernity, questions of the appropriate or reprehensible behaviour of scholars were sometimes discussed. The debate on envy (invidia, also invidentia), which belongs among the mortal sins, is particularly interesting. On the one hand, writings on this topic are not always about the affect of envy, but sometimes also about being envied. The perspective on the persons concerned and thus also their moral judgement can therefore differ. On the other hand, invidia can also be interpreted in a broader sense as cautious prudence (prudentia) and then evaluated positively, for example if you withhold knowledge because you fear it could be misused. Some authors even consider invidia to be synonymous with aemulatio and see ‘envy’ of others as an incentive to improve one’s own performance. The article analyses several writings on the subject. At the centre is the disputation on ‘permissible’ envy (De licita eruditorum invidentia) held in Rostock in 1718 under the presidency of Franz Albert Aepin, which triggered an exciting debate. The historical context of the disputations is also considered. Therefore texts by René Descartes, Christian Thomasius and Gottlieb Spizel are discussed.

Abstract:
Most academic theses and dissertations are now born-digital assets (i.e., electronic theses and dissertations). As such, they often coexist with author-supplied metadata that has the potential for being repurposed and enhanced to facilitate discovery and access in an online environment. The authors describe the evolution of the electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) cataloging workflow at a large research library, from the era of print to the present day, with emphasis on the challenges and opportunities of harvesting author-supplied metadata for cataloging ETDs. The authors provide detailed explanations of the harvesting process, creating code for the metadata transformations, loading records, and quality assurance procedures.

Abstract:
Rubashov — Honored Artist of Ukraine, Member of the National Union of Artists in Ukraine, Associ- ate Professor of the Department of Drawing the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.Yurii Rubashov was born in Kyiv in 1947. After the end of the RCSU with the name of T. Shevchenko in 1965, he joined KSAI and till 1971 he studied in prominent Ukrainian graphists: V. Kasyana, I. Selivanov, V. Chebanyk. The artist turns to historical subjects and initiates graphic cycle, dedicated to the history of Kiev Rus and the activities of the kings who influenced the historical passing of events of that time.First of this thesis topic was a series of lithographs "Yaroslav the Wise" (1971), later — a series of graphic com- positions "Kiev Rus" (1979), a series of colored prints "Prince of Kiev", "Princess Olga, Svyatoslav, Vladimir, and Yaroslav the Wise (1992).The artist shows the greatest creative interest in landscape painting (cycles "On the Spain" (1982), "On the Sweden" (1985), "On the Jordan" (1983), "On the Armenia" (1983), "Roads of the Ukraine" (1996) and still life (Sweden Series, 2012–2013).It can be argued that Yu. Rubashov’s works absorbed the lyrics of landscapes with characteristic features of both southern and northern colors, and his still life is characterized by precise organization, a variety of styl- ized forms, which show confidence in the possession of the material and a balanced sense of compositional harmony. In the process of forming the author’s technique, he chooses the path of innovation and experiment, which in turn causes a peculiar interpretation of different technical means — a combination of materials and technologies of different nature. The artist exploits and applies multicolored pigments, oil pastels, watercolors and acrylic paints and the like, mixing everything with different solvents, which gives the opportunity to original express and crystallize a peculiar, author’s style.Drawing on the foundations of academic education, the artist experiments, seeks creative ideas and success- fully incorporates contemporary artistic problems into new imaginative solutions. This is a valuable example of growing skill and formation creative personality. In 2000 and 2015 he received first-degree diplomas All-Ukrainian Triennial of Graphic Arts, in 2012 — Di- ploma of the third stage of the exhibition-competition named G.Yakutovich.Yu. Rubashov fruitfully combines creative work with teaching. In the process of teaching his students, Yu. Rubashov not only lays the foundations of academic drawing, but also encourages to analyze creative material, to study and master the various drawing techniques and opportunities inherent in them.In the general process of contemporary search for an art, together with the academic pragmatism of the cur- riculum, the teacher, especially in the first courses of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Restoration, draws attention of the students in different artistic trends, teaches analytical and creative perception of natural objects and consciously approach the transformation of three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional work plane of a paper sheet. These methodological principles meet the needs of modern times. The stylistic language of his works is recognizable and special. Not dwelling on what he has achieved, he im- parts his experience to the students, demonstrating the inexhaustible possibilities of drawing and the technical means of its implementation, including pastels. The high level of his works makes it possible to claim that Yu. Rubashov is a master of pastels and his contribution to the development of Ukrainian art is indisputable.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine some of the digitization projects at the library of the University of Jordan. As the library acts as the deposit centre for theses from the Arab world universities, an effective management policy for deposit, management and access is required. The paper illustrates some of the existing workflows and considers the challenges and possible improvements. Design/methodology/approach Interviews (n = 8) with library staff in the Information Division provided details about the methods used for the collection and management of print and electronic theses in the University of Jordan, in addition to some digitization projects. In addition, very recent unpublished brochure was collected from one member of staff in the computer applications and databases section to learn about theses deposit statistics from various countries in the Arab world. A business process modelling technique (Riva) (Ould, 2005) using role activity diagram illustrated some of the existing workflows, the challenges and possible improvements. Findings Some Arab universities do not send theses on regular basis; some do not collaborate at all. Workflows vary according to the format of the thesis. The number of digitized print theses has reached 77,885 titles, out of total of 84,043, but it is a slow process. All newly submitted theses from Jordanian universities come in print and on a CD, but other external institutions may use different methods (CD only by mail, or direct uploading to the webpage provided by the University of Jordan). The current online system for uploading theses was last updated in 2017. Deposit rates through the system are very low. Access to theses is relatively limited; print theses can be accessed within the library premises. The online theses repository provides full text and all academic staff; students and researchers can access these from any workstation within the university campus. Only registered users may access theses databases (read only) outside the network. Resourcing for digitization is limited, and the digitization itself is currently outsourced although other processes are done in-house. Practical implications The paper encourages the use of a practical online theses’ repository to deposit theses from the higher education within the Arab world. Social implications Establishing theses repository and ensuring proper and smooth deposit process by Arab universities libraries, would enhance communication and collaboration amongst them. Originality/value The paper supports the theme of the primacy of global access to information for learning and scholarship. The paper adds value in the context of theses access amongst Arab universities. As the library acts as the deposit centre for theses from the Arab world universities, an effective management policy for deposit, management, access and preservation is required. The paper provides a set of recommendations that would contribute to raise the visibility of research produced by Arab higher education, through a single source of access to theses.

Abstract:
One of the significant elements of writing skills is cohesion. Cohesion is a concept that refers to the connection and smooth relationship between elements in a text or discourse. In the context of writing, cohesion is the ability to connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs so that they form a coherent and easy-to-understand whole. Cohesion plays an important role in ensuring that a text has a logical flow and can be understood well by readers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate cohesive devices found in graduate students' theses. It is the case that the language that is utilized the most frequently in print, electronic, and internet media is English. Writing in English is becoming an increasingly crucial ability, particularly in the academic sphere, as English continues to prevail as the universal language of choice for scientific research and publications. To comprehensively analyze how cohesive devices are utilized in the thesis text, the present study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Coding was used to analyze the data from the theses written by one graduate students. The categories of text and texture, cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and lexical cohesion were considered during the analysis. Based on the findings of this study, grammatical coherence was examined in eight sentences, while lexical cohesion was examined in four sentences.

Abstract:
One of the important elements of the educational process at Vilnius University (established in 1579) was debate and defense. During a debate or defense, a student had to defend theses on a certain scholarly subject. For a long time, theses were treated as a secondary historical source in scholarly research. As the concepts of social science and history of ideas develop, the value of this genre is being reassessed and new methodological tools are being created. This trend inspired a comprehensive study of Vilnius University theses for 1579–1773. This article aims to identify the main features of theses as a specific genre of early modern scholarly literature – their functions, types, scope, and social context. In the Vilnius Academy, it was not mandatory to print theses prior to 1773, some of them were made public in manuscript form. Theses did not have a rigid internal structure, and their scope varied from a small publication to a large treatise. It is believed that while a large number of theses were published, most of them are not extant. Nowadays’ resources made it possible to identify 134 theses from the faculties of philosophy, theology, and law, printed at the Academy’s printing house from 1576 to 1773. Most of these theses (over 80 per cent, or 109 theses) were intended for student debates, mid-term exams and inauguration ceremonies for the new academic year, and only less than 20 per cent (i. e. 25 theses) contain information that they were meant for obtaining a degree (Bachelor, Master, Licenciate, Doctor). At European universities, the latter type of thesis is classified as “pro gradu”. A large number of theses were published without indicating the name of the degree candidates (16 theses were printed without the names of the candidates in 1576–1599, and 20 in the 18th century) – both clergy and laymen could defend their theses. 62 theses printed in 1585–1773 are held today by the Vilnius University Library. As some of them are in several copies, the total number amounts to 96 copies. It was observed that many theses are bound in artificially compiled composite sets. An analysis of ownership marks revealed that most of the thesis collection in the Vilnius University Library is related to the church environment. Usually, old dissertations would end up in the libraries of Catholic monasteries of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A relatively small number of copies belonged to Vilnius University (about 16 per cent). Studying the collection, we managed to find one case of a layman who had two 17th century theses in his personal library – it is the so-called “governor” of Slutsk and the founder of the Slutsk printing house, bibliophile Kazimieras Kristupas Klokockis (about 1625–1685). The presented conclusions show the originality of the Vilnius Alma Mater, although they are not exhaustive. Searching for old theses in the memory institutions of Lithuania and other countries would help to continue the research that would provide material for comparative studies of the history of science in Lithuania and Europe. The collection of theses of Vilnius University is digitized and freely accessible online – this is yet another incentive to delve further into the histories of old theses. Keywords: history of science; history of universities; printed theses; Vilnius University; Academy Printing House; Jesuit Order; Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Abstract:
The study aims at examining libraries in four Sub-Saharan Africa countries and their role in propagating open science. It also seeks to explore existing open science practices, ascertain the level of participation of academic libraries in open science activities, identify the strategies used in marketing open science platforms and enumerate the challenges hindering the success of open science in the selected countries. The study was guided by the qualitative school of thought where the researcher builds a complex, holistic picture, analyses words, and reports detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting. The study employed the multiple case study research design approach to assess how academic libraries in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda promote open science. The findings show that there are few scholarly journals which exist in open access for most African academies in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. Though not massively adopted, open access institutional repositories have been used to preserve and publicize the digital contents in some academic institutions in Africa such as theses, dissertations, administrative and heritage materials, conference proceedings as well as pre-prints and post-print of journal articles. The study recommends the intensification of open science advocacy in academic libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa; institutions should ensure that there is a stable electricity supply as well as reliable internet connectivity, introducing regular training on emerging media technologies to the community members and strengthening the libraries consortium in Sub-Saharan Africa as an enabling platform to share intellectual productivity of their member countries.

Abstract:
Spanish composer María Teresa Prieto (1895-1982) belongs to a group of Spanish exiles who left their country for Mexico as a result of the Spanish Civil War. She arrived in Mexico in 1936 and developed her compositional career in there. Her first composition after her arrival in the new country was the song cycle Seis Melodías, a work that includes six songs with poetry by Ricardo de Alcázar, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca, and María Teresa Prieto herself. This document analyzes each one of the songs, both musically and poetically, as well as the relationship between music and text. Seis Melodías' structural organization as a cycle is very particular, since Prieto organized the cycle in pairs—namely I and II, III and IV, and V and VI—each group with strong poetic and thematic unity. The songs belonging to this cycle, present the duality of being independent and dependent at the same time, given that each song stands by itself, but together they create a meta-narrative that progresses from hope to desolation, not as a political statement, but as a homage to, as well as a lament, for the Spanish land and freedom. The cyclical nature of this work is accomplished by Prieto through motivic unity, a clear harmonic plan, and poetic relationships between the songs.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The proliferation ofinformation available in electronic format has been perpetuated by rapid technological advances. Users have a choice between print and electronic resources. At the same time, the use of these resources is determined by what is available to the users and what the users prefer. Problems that users encounter when accessing these resources determine the use of print and electronic resources. The current study evaluated the use of, and preference for, print and electronic resources by students at the University of Malawi College of Medicine. The study population comprised 179 undergraduate students. A self-administered questionnaire was used to establish the students' use of, and preference for, print and electronic resources, reasons for their preferences and the problems they encountered in accessing print and electronic resources. An interview schedule was used to elicit background information from the College Librarian on issues of budgeting, technological infrastructure, licensing and copyright agreements, archiving and library staff and training. Questionnaire results were quantitatively analysed and presented in terms of frequency tables and graphs. Interview results were analysed qualitatively. The study findings show that the students used both print and electronic resources. However, print resources were more heavily used than electronic ones. The students also preferred print resources to electronic. A lack of sufficient computers and low levels of computer and information literacy contributed to the underutilisation of electronic resources. Recommendations in terms of technological infrastructure, user training, staff training, user support and archiving were made based on the findings of the study.<br>Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of KwaZulu- Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2005.

Abstract:
Printed Musical Propaganda in Early Modern England exposes a relationship between music and propaganda that crossed generations and genres, revealing how consistently music, in theory and practice, was used as propaganda in a variety of printed genres that included or discussed music from the English Civil Wars through the reign of William and Mary. These bawdy broadside ballads, pamphlets paid for by Parliament, sermons advertising the Church of England’s love of music, catch-all music collections, music treatises addressed to monarchs, and masque and opera texts, when connected in a contextual mosaic, reveal a new picture of not just individual propaganda pieces, but multi-work propaganda campaigns with contributions that cross social boundaries. Musicians, Royalists, Parliamentarians, government officials, propagandists, clergymen, academics, and music printers worked together setting musical traps to catch the hearts and minds of their audiences and readers. Printed Musical Propaganda proves that the influential power of music was not merely an academic matter for the early modern English, but rather a practical benefit that many sought to exploit for their own gain.

Awards may honour and induce performance. There are many different academic awards, ranging from the Nobel Prizes to best paper awards, and to awards for young scholars and rising stars. The Synthetic Control Method allows us to show empirically that the performance of recipients of the well-known John Bates Clark Medal (given by the American Economic Association to a scholar under the age of 40 ‘who is judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge’) subsequently increases. Clark Medallists raise their publication activity and the work they had previously published is cited considerably more often (in line with a status effect). The same effects can be observed when researchers are elected as Fellows of the Econometric Society, also a prestigious honour.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Dowland celebrates the story of one of the most important, most studied, and most performed composers to emerge from early modern England. More than just a biography, this monograph contextualizes the geographical, political, religious, cultural, and musical aspects of the life of John Dowland (1563–1626). In doing so, the book provides a window into life as a musician in the Elizabethan-Jacobean era, illuminating the importance of social, courtly, and academic connections. The narrative follows a master lutenist, renowned for his virtuosic skills, on journeys to France, through the German and Italian lands, and into the Danish and English courts of Christian IV and James I, as he developed a musical style that was at once personal and cosmopolitan. Dowland also closely explores and contextualizes Dowland’s musical compositions, which consisted of lute song–airs, lute solos and duos, consort music, and psalm harmonizations. During his lifetime, the composer issued four songbooks, including the most successful secular music anthology of the era, a collection of consort music, and a theoretical translation, all printed in London. In these publications, Dowland utilized innovative print formats and set new standards for contemporary genres. Dowland’s music also appears in many other prints and manuscripts in both England and on the Continent, a testimony to his widespread appeal. As a complete record, Dowland captures the entrepreneurial resourcefulness of the foremost musician of his day, a performing composer who understood expected conventions, seized opportunities, and created a musical legacy that still stands firm four centuries after his death.

Abstract:
With the guidance of this book, academic librarians wishing to provide print, electronic, and streaming media (music and film) course reserve services for their campus communities can do so in compliance with U.S. copyright law. Many academic libraries offer print and electronic course reserve services that encourage learning by connecting students and faculty with less expensive and supplementary educational materials. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions regarding how U.S. copyright law affects course reserve services; as a result, many academic libraries restrict the scope of the services they provide or refrain from pursuing new options, such as media reserves, out of fear of violating the law or being sued for copyright infringement. Copyright and Course Reserves addresses this problem, providing authoritative advice for making print, electronic, and media course reserves available in compliance with U.S. copyright law. It explains options for implementing and sustaining media reserve services through which students and faculty can access online music, sound recordings, and film. Additionally, short examples from a wide range of libraries explore real-world scenarios and current issues related to course reserve services to help readers better understand and apply the information found in the book.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates that student life constituted an important source for the creation and circulation of printed images by considering a visual domain that flourished in the Southern Netherlands in the seventeenth century: illustrated college notebooks. The well-preserved corpus presents an ambivalent relationship between knowledge and imagination. This essay focuses on the symbolic language applied to lecture notebooks, the usage of which was encouraged in similar academic practices such as Jesuit affixiones and thesis prints. It also addresses the materiality of prints and their manipulation by students. My hypothesis is that the sphere of learning was, via the printing world, bathed with Jesuit culture and visual language that perpetuated in higher education.

Important products in an academic library’s collection are Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations since they represent a wealth of scholarly and artistic content created by Masters and Doctoral students in the degree-seeking process. Each has experienced an evolution to a new format, electronic. Many of these are PDF files, using the Adobe Acrobat software. Until very recently, though, those files with accompanying materials were separated. This chapter further discusses several issues inherent in this process. These include access, use, re-use, preservation, storage, integration with other systems, copyrights, and permissions. The successful management of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) requires effort across the entire lifecycle to ensure that ETDs are managed, preserved, and made accessible in a manner that today's users expect. Given the pressure of reading more in less time, today's users demand access to various formats regardless of temporal and spatial restrictions and the types of devices used.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 examines a famous experiment conducted in the name of musical love and loss: journalist Gene Weingarten’s Pulitzer-winning Washington Post article, which narrated the 2007 undercover busking effort by famed violinist Joshua Bell. Playing beautiful classical repertoire, the disguised Bell attracted few eager listeners. Many readers declared their love of this story, lamenting its proof of how beauty gets drowned out in our busy lives. Other responses to Weingarten fell into traps of intellectual elitism, as people rushed to proclaim that “obviously” this article was hokum and that no reader would be gullible enough to buy what Weingarten was selling. A trio of themes emerges from my critiques of aesthetic and academic exceptionalism: how we mismeasure beauty and its scarcity, how we productively or harmfully imbue musicianship with humanizing values, and why lovable dreams of musical universalism (we are all musical, we are all musicians) may elude or even impede agendas of social justice.

Abstract:
This study reveals diverse academic (A) digital (D) literacies (Ls) based on language researchers' experiences when writing theses and articles in English in a master's program at a Mexican university. Diverse ALs flourish in Euro-American dominant English-speaking contexts; this study reveals specific ADLs occurring in a Mexican university. Through a survey, language researchers reported ADLs, and interviews manifested further details. Academic writing literacies went beyond printed resources to engage in diverse ADLs involving dictionaries, editors, translators, and AI tools. The ADLs seemed to emerge to cover writing gaps stemming from participants' experience in the master's program. Thus, institutions must offer training on academic writing, DLs, awareness of the pros and cons of using ADL tools, and of the value of online personalized writing support. Further research by integrating texts' analysis and authors' practices is suggested.

Abstract:
This chapter disconnects from the online world to explore the relationship between sociology and its platforms. It approaches platforms as positions from which to communicate that are facilitated by technological infrastructures in digital or analogue. It also rethinks the relationship between sociology and its platforms to remind that sociology did not wait for the arrival of the internet to communicate its insights, but has always relied on other, earlier media technologies to do so. The chapter mentions print and broadcast media that predate the emergence of digital technology. It contextualizes the radical transformations that social media brought about as they became an institutionalized feature of academic life as dissemination engines and tools for generating publicity.

Abstract:
Sue Thomas uses this chapter to explore recent academic and creative projects about Mary Prince that reframe and add complexity to her story. Prince, enslaved in Bermuda, Grand Turk Island, Antigua and London, is best remembered for her influential slave narrative, The History of Mary Prince, published in 1831 by Thomas Pringle, secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society. The text was a graphic exposé of the atrocities of slavery and brought about a libel case against Pringle by one of Prince’s former owners. Thomas looks at work about Prince including Margot Maddison-MacFadyen’s archival research used both in her PhD dissertation and her historical fiction novella for young readers; themes of other-mothering explored in the poetry of Joan Anim-Addo; a video installation by Joscelyn Gardner using a toy theatre set that reflects on performative aspects of history through Prince’s story; and work by Cynthia M. Kennedy and Michele Speitz which brings attention to the harsh conditions of slaves working in Caribbean salt ponds as described by Prince. Finally, Thomas explores Prince’s conversion to Moravianism and how her experience of slavery chafed against the religious philosophy of quietism.

Abstract:
The epistemological study of perceptions about the speed and variation of time is fundamental for the advancement of scientific knowledge. Understanding these concepts not only enriches our perception of the physical universe but also allows us to reflect on the nature of human reality and experience. This article, exploring these questions, could contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge in physics and philosophy, while also opening up new perspectives for understanding time and motion. By investigating the conceptions of speed and acceleration in an epistemological analysis of time, it is possible to reveal unprecedented and complex aspects that can challenge established concepts and open new avenues for scientific research. The methodology adopted for the construction of the research will be the bibliographic research, a methodology widely used in several areas of knowledge, such as in the social, human and exact sciences. It consists of the search and analysis of information from bibliographic sources, such as books, scientific articles, theses, dissertations and other printed or digital materials. The results of this research revealed that velocity and acceleration are not only physical quantities, but also concepts that are intrinsically linked to our perception of time. The way we perceive and measure time is directly related to our understanding of the speed and acceleration of the objects around us. In addition, it was observed that traditional conceptions of velocity and acceleration can be extended and improved through an epistemological approach to time.

The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida (UF) are participating in an innovative program to explore whether making electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) available in print through online retail sites can have positive impacts for graduates, the University, and the general public. Digitization and metadata enhancement have improved discoverability and ease of access for ETDs in the Institutional Repository at the University of Florida (IR@UF). However, through this new program, research can be shared widely beyond academe with practitioners, corporate researchers, independent scholars, and international readers. This paper will describe how the Smathers Libraries have worked with a corporate partner, BiblioLabs, to leverage online retailers’ discovery engines to promote print versions of ETDs while alerting readers to the free digital versions available in the IR@UF. This paper will also share how alumni, current graduate students, and other campus stakeholders have responded to the pilot of this new service. The Libraries are monitoring referred traffic to the IR and sales data. UF is the first university to contribute content to this effort, but we expect others to follow suit if the data supports the expectations of the University, the Libraries, and our graduates.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: In many public and academic libraries, ebooks are being pushed on users mainly due to budgetary and space needs even though readers are still showing a strong preference for print books. Background: Many librarians are focusing on how to get readers to use ebooks when they really should be considering how ebooks fit into learning, whether formal or self-learning, and the preferences that readers show for one format over the other. Library collections since the 1960s have generally focused on a strategy of “give them what they want,” but in the case of ebooks, there seems to be a trend of trying to force ebooks on users. Methodology: A survey was given to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of South Florida. Contribution: Our research findings fit with current data that shows a decline in popularity of ebooks and a continued popularity of print books. We would like to convince members of the academy to think about this issue and question the ebooks plans that libraries have on their campuses. Findings: Both undergraduates and graduates strongly preferred print over electronic in the case of textbooks and books for leisure reading. Only journal articles were preferred in electronic form, but from the comments it was evident that articles were printed out and the student used the print copy for studying and research purposes. Reference books were split 50/50 in preference for electronic versus print. Recommendations for Practitioners: Librarians and teachers cannot assume that just because students use their smart-phones that they prefer ebooks. Recommendation for Researchers: More research is needed on this subject before libraries become too dependent on purchasing large ebook packages from vendors rather than the selection of print books. Future Research: Now that this paper has advanced our understanding of user preferences for books versus ebooks, we wish to expand our research to faculty and widen the geographical areas covered.

Abstract:
Mechanical Engineers graduating from the Hellenic Air Force Academy (HAFA), are initially appointed in a military squadron, to support and manage the aircraft maintenance workload. Throughout their career, they will at some point, be appointed in a procurement or in a research department, where they will need to have an integral understanding of how a certain aircraft in conjunction with its propulsion system, can meet prescribed operational needs. The syllabus of the Mechanical Engineering degree offered at the HAFA, encompasses several modules related to Aircraft Design, Material Science and Propulsion Systems. The Aircraft Design Project (ADP) presented herein, aims to stimulate the cadets in applying a diverse field of knowledge on a single application, building thus soon enough the missing communication link between those who deal with the power plant and those who deal with the aircraft design. The assignment input is only confined in a short description of the operational profile of an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) to be designed. A number of teams are formed which act competitively and develop a design proposal, each one for its own sake. As part of the project, they also have to print a 3D mock-up and do a testing in the wind tunnel operated within the HAFA. Finally, each team has the obligation to defend its design in front of an audience consisting of HAF military officers, HAFA academics and delegates from industries. The proposed exercise constitutes a novel conception of coursework type, extending over one year, engaging three Academic Sectors and aiming to achieve the following educational targets: a) Learn to work in a team within a competitive environment. Each cadet has to collaborate with his teammates and compete with the members of the other team(s). b) Combine and apply knowledge acquired from various scientific fields. c) Learn how to “sell” a product to a diverse audience being interested in engineering excellence (academia) cost effectiveness (industry) and degree of compliance with operational needs (military).

Abstract:
The concerto for violin and orchestra by V. Poleacov has a special value both within the composer's creation and for the national musical culture, representing an example of the approach to the concerto genre in Moldovan composition, through the synthesis of the classical concerto model with elements characteristic of instrumental folk music. The author appeals to the stylization of the Moldovan melos, expressed in its rhythmic and intonational themes and formulas. In this context, the article deals with the issue of the interpretation of diverse themes, which can be highlighted through technical and artistic violinistic means focused on the knowledge of both folk music and folk violin performance traditions. This perspective, in the opinion of the author, could be the basis of a new interpretive vision of this concerto.

Abstract:
Department of artistic textiles of St. Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Arts and Design has accumulated an extensive experience in practical training. Noteworthy is the experience of the master student’s production (museum) practice in 2022 on the basis of the Ivanovo Cotton Print Museum. Rejection of the idea to copy textile samples in favor of performing a creative task allowed students to complete a significant part of their original table textile projects based on Ivanovo cotton prints in a short time. These projects developed further in the following semester and opened up valuable opportunities for participation in exhibitions and competitions. Conducting such creative project activities provides students with experience in actualization and transmission of national images.

Abstract:
In our current era of disinformation, ready access to trustworthy sources is critical. “Fake news,” sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and propaganda distort the common reality, polarize communities, and threaten open democratic systems. What citizens, journalists, and policymakers need is a canonical source of trusted information. For millions, that trusted source resides in the books and journals housed in libraries, curated and vetted by librarians. Yet today, as we turn inevitably to our screens for information, if a book isn’t digital, it is as if it doesn’t exist. To address this gap, the Internet Archive is actively working with the world’s great libraries to digitize their collections and to make them available to users via controlled digital lending, a process whereby libraries can loan digital copies of the print books on their shelves. By bringing millions of missing books and academic literature online, libraries can empower journalists, researchers, and Wikipedia editors to cite the best sources directly in their work, grounding readers in the vetted, published record, and extending the investment that libraries have made in their print collections.

Abstract:
The teaching-learning process has undergone a major shift due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The situation has necessitated the use of online media more aggressively to reach out to learners and address their academic needs. However, the digital divide prevalent in many parts of the world is a stumbling block. Academic Programme delivery through technological interventions, having a judicious mix of online and broadcast media, was the solution, Indira Gandhi National Open University thought of while delivering their MA (Journalism &amp; Mass Communication) Programme. // The university has been using various ICTs extensively such as radio, television, interactive radio counselling, broadcast-based teleconferencing, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Face book, WhatsApp, YouTube etc. in complementary and supplementary modes; in addition to printed Self Learning Materials. The use of digital online resources like social media, MOOCs and OERs mixed with traditional broadcasting channels paved the way for skill-oriented training and successful delivery of the programme.

Abstract:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises the literature from academic, policy, and knowledge institution sources on the drivers of acute food insecurity and famines with a focus on key FCDO-partner countries. This review builds further on evidence already collected in other K4D helpdesk reports. The main conclusion of this rapid review is that the drivers of acute food insecurity are complex, often involving multiple and interrelated factors. The drivers for chronical food insecurity and acute food insecurity cannot be separated entirely from each other, as the evidence shows that slow-onset determinants of food insecurity could play a critical role during an event (or multiple events) that could trigger a food emergency. The literature shows that the political economy (e.g. food system governance or preparedness of institutions to disasters) and socioeconomic dynamics (e.g. shaping demand and supply of food) have become more relevant factors in any analysis on the drivers of acute food insecurity, acute malnutrition, and famine. This coincides with a shift in the literature away from global drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition toward localised dynamics on the national and sub-national level. The analytical framework of Howe (2018) that captures this complexity distinguishes pressure, hold, and self-reinforcing dynamics as key dimensions that explain potential pathways for famine. These could be political-induced, natural-induced, economical-induced, or socially induced, but most often a combination. Based on this framework and supported by the evidence from the literature, this rapid review assesses conflicts and protracted crises; climate change and pressure on natural resources; social inequalities; and economic shocks and food prices, as the key drivers of acute food insecurity and famine. Importantly, from the literature it seems clear that acute food insecurity is the result of changing vulnerabilities that link with different coping mechanisms of households and communities.

Avis, William. Drivers, Barriers and Opportunities of E-waste Management in Africa. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.016.

Abstract:
Population growth, increasing prosperity and changing consumer habits globally are increasing demand for consumer electronics. Further to this, rapid changes in technology, falling prices and consumer appetite for better products have exacerbated e-waste management challenges and seen millions of tons of electronic devices become obsolete. This rapid literature review collates evidence from academic, policy focussed and grey literature on e-waste management in Africa. This report provides an overview of constitutes e-waste, the environmental and health impacts of e-waste, of the barriers to effective e-waste management, the opportunities associated with effective e-waste management and of the limited literature available that estimate future volumes of e-waste. Africa generated a total of 2.9 million Mt of e-waste, or 2.5 kg per capita, the lowest regional rate in the world. Africa’s e-waste is the product of Local and imported Sources of Used Electronic and Electrical Equipment (UEEE). Challenges in e-waste management in Africa are exacerbated by a lack of awareness, environmental legislation and limited financial resources. Proper disposal of e-waste requires training and investment in recycling and management technology as improper processing can have severe environmental and health effects. In Africa, thirteen countries have been identified as having a national e-waste legislation/policy.. The main barriers to effective e-waste management include: Insufficient legislative frameworks and government agencies’ lack of capacity to enforce regulations, Infrastructure, Operating standards and transparency, illegal imports, Security, Data gaps, Trust, Informality and Costs. Aspirations associated with energy transition and net zero are laudable, products associated with these goals can become major contributors to the e-waste challenge. The necessary wind turbines, solar panels, electric car batteries, and other "green" technologies require vast amounts of resources. Further to this, at the end of their lifetime, they can pose environmental hazards. An example of e-waste associated with energy transitions can be gleaned from the solar power sector. Different types of solar power cells need to undergo different treatments (mechanical, thermal, chemical) depending on type to recover the valuable metals contained. Similar issues apply to waste associated with other energy transition technologies. Although e-waste contains toxic and hazardous metals such as barium and mercury among others, it also contains non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminium and precious metals such as gold and copper, which if recycled could have a value exceeding 55 billion euros. There thus exists an opportunity to convert existing e-waste challenges into an economic opportunity.

Abstract:
Population growth, increasing prosperity and changing consumer habits globally are increasing demand for consumer electronics. Further to this, rapid changes in technology, falling prices, increased affordability and consumer appetite for new products have exacerbated e-waste management challenges and seen millions of tons of electronic devices become obsolete. This rapid literature review collates evidence from academic, policy focussed and grey literature on the technical aspects e-waste value chains. The report should be read in conjunction with two earlier reports on e-waste management1. E-waste is any electrical or electronic equipment, including all components, subassemblies and consumables, which are part of the equipment at the time the equipment becomes waste. The exact treatment of Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) can vary enormously according to the category of WEEE and technology that is used. Electrical and electronic items contain a wide variety of materials. As a result of this complex mix of product types and materials, some of which are hazardous (including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury and certain flame retardants) multiple approaches to WEEE are required, each with specific technical guidelines. This report is structured as follows: Section two provides an introduction to the technical aspects of e-waste management, including a reflection on the challenges and complexities of managing a range of product types involving a range of components and pollutants. Section three provides an annotated bibliography of key readings that discuss elements of the technical aspects of managing e-waste. This bibliography includes readings on national guidelines, training manuals and technical notes produced by the Basel convention and courses. WEEE recycling can be a complex and multifaced process. In order to manage e-waste effectively, the following must be in place Legislative and regulatory frameworks Waste Prevention and minimisation guidelines Identification of waste mechanisms Sampling, analysis and monitoring expertise Handling, collection, packaging, labelling, transportation and storage guidelines Environmentally sound disposal guidelines Management is further complicated by the speed of technological advance with technologies becoming redundant much sooner than initially planned. Case studies show that the average actual lifetimes of certain electronic products are at least 2.3 years shorter than either their designed or desired lifetimes.
