Full textIn 1663, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Superintendant of the King’s Buildings, gathered a small team composed of members of the Académie Française: the petite Académie was born. Entrusted with the responsibility of writing the history of the Roi Soleil (Louis xiv) in tokens, inscriptions and medals, it soon became an essential actor of royal propaganda. In 1701, it was institutionalised and became the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres (Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Letters). In the early 18th century, the institution started to add some finer historical studies to its panegyric task. The Académie, a royal institution, then became a reflection of the figure of the Lettered Prince. It thus became an essential link in the Republic of Letters. The way this academy functioned during a century reflects a changing world, between the values of the Grand Siècle (17th century) and the innovations of the period of Enlightment in the 18th century

Full textThe memoirs of the Academy of Letters and Literature are an invaluable testament to the relationship between Europe and China during the years 1700-1750. Three major areas emerge from these studies carried out mainly by Nicolas Fréret and Etienne Fourmont : language, literature and history. They have tried to find answers to questions raised during many debates in intellectual circles. Fréret gathered historical facts learned from Chinese literature and has analyzed them in detail. He concluded that the Chinese language is not a philosophical language, and that the Chinese chronology is authentic, but it does not go further back than 2000 BC. Fourmont, concentrated on linguistic studies, is known as a great Orientalist, especially for writing a French-Chinese dictionary and a Chinese grammar

Full textMetallic history has led to a certain number of critical publications which have mainly focused on the numismatic value of the Petite Académie project, somehow moving away from the created book to concentrate on the metal. Although doser studies have recently been made of the book, its literary and historiographical dimension has seldom been raised. Thus The history in the book of medals of Louis the Fourteenth has corne into being. Therefore, this study intends to place the academicians work in a traditional historiographical context where antique codes prevail. The book clearly takes its inspiration from them while toying with them, magnifying or ruling them out depending on what they could bring to the glory of absolutism. The importance of the writers in this collective work should also be mentioned. They will progressively be moved aside as printing time gets doser. The institutionai framework will be pushed in the background, behind the king. However, it remains eue that the debates conducted within the minutes show the individuality of each writer at the origin of the creation. Finally, as the making of the book is based on a certain number of reforms and pre-established rules, its evolution will be explained. In Tact, the writing principles endure from the manuscripts to the publications and yet they may evolve into new ways of expression as the writing proceeds. Despite everything they may contradict one another in their application and have then to prove adaptable
